Destiny of an Emperor 2: The Story of Zhuge Liang

Xu Zhou and Surrounding Areas

Like it’s predecessor, Destiny of an Emperor 2 chronicles the era of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Unlike the first installment however, the gameplay is less linear and the story is more realistic, as it isn’t just Liu Nei going from one area to the next conquering castles. There are more caves, the gameplay (both in and out of battle) is slower, and the characters movement is even slower (for a while at least).

You can not recruit as many generals in this one, but in a sense that adds to the realism as the characters you do acquire actually served Liu Bei in the story. This game was never released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and just recently the rom was translated to english (early 2000’s). With the added depth, the game probably lasts a bit longer than the first. While it personally isn’t as entertaining as the first, if you enjoyed the first you’re going to enjoy the second because despite the small differences the general engine is the same; 5 generals against 5 enemy generals.

Simply put, this game is for people who played the first game. I can’t imagine there are many who have played/heard of the second without previously playing the original DoaE.

You don’t start off with Zhang Jao/Dong Zhuo. In fact, the story begins as you and Cao Cao finish off Dong Zhuo. Yuan Shu (oh my) has stolen the imperial seal and declared himself emperor! Cao Cao sends you off to dispose of him while Cao Cao builds up his own defenses. Talk to Cao Cao and he offers you Lu Zhao and Zhu Ling. They are not great generals but they have a decent amount of soldiers and if you say no you’ll never get the chance to recruit them again. Of course, since they are only with you to the end of the Yuan Shu quest, that’s not really an issue.

Anyway, get them (or reject them) and walk south, as Guan Yu and later Zhang Fei will join you. Equip their weapons and notice the differences; unlike the first DoaE, you can’t just equip any weapon. Rather, each character has their own type (axe, bow, sword, etc). Explore the town and familiarize yourself with the new shops and the ones that have stayed the same.

The weaponry has Leather Armor if you wish, while you can train yourself at the facility in the northwestern area of town, with the symbol of a black ball and four dashes in the corners. The store with the dragon symbol has a deposit area for items and an area to save/quit your quest. The Inn is well, the Inn. Finally, the store with the treasure sack is an item store. There really isn’t much else to do so go out and leave.

Veterans of the first Destiny of an Emperor will smile when they hear the overworld theme as it will draw memories of the original DoaE theme. Be wary of your surroundings; in this game, terrain factors into the damage rates in battle. For example, Zhang Fei’s bar turns yellow in the mountains which means he takes off more/absorbs less. Memorize this for your characters to better utilize how you use them.

Also, you can align your characters in certain formation to take advantage of certain aspects (ie more magic power, more defense, faster characters, etc.). However, do know that most strategies have drawbacks as well so study them well before you implement them in important battles.

Make note of the agility statistic, as each character had their own agility in the first one but now it is recorded and displayed. You should have no trouble with random battles outside, as the three brothers are as formidable as before and Lu Zhao and Zhu Ling help out enough to create a good five man party.

Upon leaving Xu Zhou, you can go south to fight Yuan Shu’s cronies or you can go north to a cave. I suggest the latter, as this will make the Yuan Shu part much easier (although this is not necessary). Anyway, go northeast and ignore the hut but go in the cave east of it. Go north upon entry to grab 93 Gold. (Oh, and a note about the gold you find. Many times you’ll see me put a figure of gold up and yours will not be the same; that’s because the gold you get is random in each location, but I’ll just put my number in for reference sake more or less). Go further east now for 108 Gold, and then east for a Leather Hat and a Leather Shield. Above are four treasures; from left to right, they are Leather Armor, Copper Sword, Map and a Revive. The Copper Sword is a valuable weapon for Liu Bei at this stage of the game and the Leather equipment is solid as well.

The Map, if used on the Overworld, shows you your location and it allows you to see certain city locations depending on where you are in the game. Anyway, return to Xu Zhou and sell off your spare weapon/armor that you have after getting everything above.

Head south from Xu Zhou to continue the story, and it wraps east and eventually you will meet Ji Ling. You should recognize these foes, as Ji Ling along with Liang Gang and Ji were in the first DoaE under Yuan Shu. Ji Ling is a solid general but the other two are hogwash, so attack Ji Ling with all your might and throw in a few Lian Huo’s (Fire attack) for good measure. Again, using tactics will make you realize that tactics have changed in the sense that you can choose whether you want certain tactics (Chi Xin, Lian Huo) to be used on the whole party or just a general. If you use it on a group, it is weakened, while attacks on one character are very strong. Keep these things in mind as you are gaining experience with the nuances of battle. If you lost too many tactical points or are too beaten physically then go back and rest, if not continue on. Yuan Yin awaits, with Chen Lan and Li Feng. Chen Lan is a bit stronger than Li Feng so go after him. Yuan Yin isn’t too tough and neither is this battle, but do head back afterwards.

After returning, enter the cave north of Yuan Yin’s starting point.

Despite the simplicity (It IS the first cave) you’ll notice right from the start that the caves/dungeons are much more complex in the second than the first. Get used to it, they only get worse (Blood Seal cave in Shu is hell to the ignorant).

Upon entry, head right for 89 Gold, and then head straight up, taking the right route for an Herbal. Straight north is a Leather Helmet. Give this to Liu Bei, as he’ll be alone soon. The path to the right of this one contains the Leather Armor. Continue east and up again and then right, taking the north detour for a Herbal, and then following the path left. It wraps back up and east again, all the way up to Lord Yuan Shu. For the time in the game, this is a difficult battle. Zhang Xun is one of the weaker characters so you can leave him alone, but it’d be a good idea to soften up Lei Bo and Yue Jiu so they don’t take off too much as your core team is attacking Yuan Shu.

Obviously, Yuan Shu is your main threat so have everyone attack him whether you have Zhu Ling and Lu Zhao or not. Heal with Liu Bei or Guan Yu (Chi Xin) if necessary. Once he is out, the battle will be yours. Return to Xu Zhou now.

Returning to Xu Zhou, Cao Cao’s henchmen Zhu Ling and Lu Zhao will desert you and take the seal to Cao Cao, directing you to stay put. If you don’t have them, nothing will happen when you enter Xu Zhou.

Head in, Chen Deng will mention that Cao Cao learned of the blood oath and has a certain suspicion about Liu Bei. Think of the RTK oath between Ma Teng, Liu Bei, Dong Cheng, Wang Zifu and others. Everyone else says different things (mostly anti-Cao Cao sentiments) now.

Rest and talk to Che Zhou (north, where Dong Cheng was) and he will tell you that Ma Teng and Dong Cheng have been…BEHEADED! Scary, well unfortunately he’s alone so he’s probably not going to behead Liu Bei and his brothers. Take him out and talk to Chen Deng, who warns you to leave now as this act against Che Zhou is only going to infuriate Cao Cao more. Agree to Chen Deng’s idea to go see Zheng Xuan to get a letter to see Yuan Shao, as it’s your only hope. Before you go, if you gave any Leather equipment to Zhang Fei or Guan Yu, give it to Chen Deng instead. Leave, and as you do Cao Cao shows up with an army that makes you look like a joker.

Gawk at the generals stats and then run, but you’ll lose Zhang Fei and Guan Yu. This is why you were to strip them of any valuable equipment. Hurry north to Zheng Xuan’s house and enter, and you’ll see a blob up the stairs (on my emulator at least; it’s really Zheng Xuan though). He says to get the map as he is writing the letter, so do so. If you visited the cave before this and got the Map already, he’ll just give you his letter anyway.

If you’re going to the cave for your first time, take the lower path, grab the 112 coins, and then the two lower chests that are a Leather Helmet and a Leather Shield. The four northern chests are a Leather Armor, Copper Sword, Map and a Revive, left to right.

Equip the Copper Sword and return back and grab the last chest on the northern path for 123 gold pieces and then leave for Zheng Xuan’s estate again. Reluctantly, Liu Bei takes the letter and heads for Yuan Shao’s support, which is on the other end of the Yuan Shu cave if you did not know. Enter the boat, listen to the DoaE2 ferry music, and head north east.

1. Xu Zhou Generals

This page will analyze the generals you fight and acquire at the beginning of Destiny of an Emperor 2, in the Xu Zhou castle area. Note that Cao Cao and his lords will be mentioned in each section you see them as you fight them often and he varies his party each time. This particular time you don’t actually fight him so don’t worry about his crazy stats.

Cao Cao – 9800 soldiers

Analysis: Look, don’t panic, you don’t need to beat the guy. You’re going to see him after you kill Che Zhou and attempt to flee Xu Zhou castle. He will be waiting with his army and you can only run. But do check out his stats and gawk. You will get to fight him later, run for now.

Che Zhou – 700 soldiers

Str. 140 – Int. 85 – Agi. 75 – A.P. 35 – A.C. 25

Weapon – Sword

Land – N/A

Analysis: Che Zhou can be hard; if you aren’t prepared and weren’t expecting to fight him. He’s a decent warlord, but with Liu Bei and his brothers supporting him, you’ll probably defeat him easily with the help of tactics. He will be killed and Cao Cao will seek retribution for his death.

Chen Deng – soldiers vary (generally lower)

Analysis: Learn to respect Chen Deng. He is what he is. No, his stats don’t jump out, but he is an efficient character for escorting Liu Bei to Yuan Shao’s estate in Ji Zhou. He will be in and out of your party until Jing Zhou, where he will be delegated to guard duty at Xin Ye for a good period of time (until you return from Wu, I believe). After you return and Xin Ye castle is rebuilt, he will join you. At this point in time, you have several generals who are better than he is. If you want to have some fun and challenge yourself, use him, otherwise re-recruit him and drop him in the billetting.

Chen Lan – 250 soldiers

Str. 160 – Int. 60 – Agi. 55 – A.P. 15 – A.C. 12

Weapon – Sword

Land – N/A

Analysis: You fight Chen Lan in the second battle against Yuan Shu. He approaches with Yuan Yin and Li Feng, and he is the strongest general of the bunch. Those are the only positive things I can say about him. His strength is average but the game puts you in a position to dominate as it is the beginning so mop him up with spells and you will never see him again.

Dian Wei – 9400 soldiers

Str. 230 – Int. 65 – Agi. 135 – A.P. 220 – A.C. 220

Weapon – Spear

Land: Mtn

Analysis: So, he comes with Cao Cao. You don’t have to worry about him this time. Take note of the absurd strength of him and Xu Zhu. Just run, you’ll fight him later (when you have scary and dangerous tactics that will kill him in a turn or two).

Guan Yu – soldiers vary (generally lower)

Str. 245 – Int. 180 – Agi. 160

Weapon – Saber

Analysis: Guan Yu is quite simply one of the top battle generals you’re going to be able to have. At no point should he be out of the active party (in fact you can’t put him in the billetting, it won’t let you. Although you can put him in the 6 slot or the tactician slot, but that isn’t recommended). He will be one of your top tactic-users for a while, until you get Zhuge Liang and Zhao Yun and others over 200 intelligence. But his overall ability easily puts him among the top 5 playable characters you’re going to find, and it’s a shame he has to leave your party after retaking Han Zhong castle. He will then protect your homeland and send his son Guan Xing in to replace him (who is slightly less talented in all respects but a solid general nonetheless).

Ji Ling – 270 soldiers

Str. 155 – Int. 70 – Agi. 100 – A.P. 20 – A.C. 15

Weapon – Sword

Land: Pln

Analysis: Ji Ling has to be considered the top general of the Yuan Shu army. An overall quality general, he is the first general you will fight in the entire game. Being the first battle though, it is not too difficult. Concentrate on Ji Ling with tactics. Ji Ling will retreat, only to fight you later in the final battle against Yuan Shu. After that battle he dies.

Lei Bo – 280 soldiers

Str. 175 – Int. 80 – Agi. 80 – A.P. 15 – A.C. 12

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: Lei Bo is surprisingly one of the top overall generals in the Yuan Shu army (his cumulative stats are higher than Ji Ling!) and appears in the final battle with Yuan Shu. Again, being one of the better generals (outside of Yuan Shu of course) you may want to take him out first. After the battle, you won’t see him again.

Li Feng – 270 soldiers

Str. 140 – Int. 65 – Agi. 75 – A.P. 15 – A.C. 12

Weapon – Sword

Land: Pln

Analysis: Li Feng appears with Yuan Yin and Chen Lan in the second boss battle. He is the worst general in his trio, so disregard him for a while as you whittle down the soldier count of the tactician Yuan Yin and the more powerful warrior Chen Lan. When Li Feng is routed, he’ll be dead.

Liang Gang – 240 soldiers

Str. 85 – Int. 45 – Agi. 45 – A.P. 15 – A.C. 12

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: Ouch, he is bad. At least his brother (cousin?) Liang Ji is decent. With no stats over 100, you have nothing to worry about. He is the worst general of the first boss battle, and you will never see him again after that.

Liang Ji – 220 soldiers

Str. 105 – Int. 90 – Agi. 65 – A.P. 15 – A.C. 12

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: Well, he’s more competent than Liang Gang. However, that is still not saying much. He is no where near the quality of Ji Ling and should be another pushover in the first boss battle you are going to fight. Again, he’ll be dead after the fight.

Liu Bei – soldiers vary (generally pretty high)

Analysis: Liu Bei is a relatively important character in this game. Yeah, he ends up being the emperor. Now as a fighter, Liu Bei is okay at best. He does have a high soldier count, so you may want to leave him in battle. However he may also serve as your tactician for a while as well. He is a playable character until you accept the reign from Liu Qi. So in all reality you don’t get to use him for that long, and when you do there are times when he is not included in your party. When you are using him, abuse his tactical ability as 200 is going to be higher than most generals he’ll encounter. Also don’t let the 26th ranking fool you, he is a good general when you have him, but his stock is ranked lower as he is out of your party very early.

Lu Zhao – 350 soldiers

Str. 95 – Int. 50 – Agi. 65 – A.P. 10 – A.C. 15

Analysis: You get Lu Zhao at the very beginning of the game in Xu Zhou. When you are done being addressed by the emperor, talk to Cao Cao and he will offer you Lu Zhao, along with Zhu Ling. You can reject, but if you do you can’t get them at all! This isn’t the end of the world but they help. Lu Zhao has poor stats and no soldier growth, but you use him for three battles and once Yuan Shu is eliminated (when you return to Xu Zhou castle, exactly) he will scurry off with the stolen seal and return it to Cao Cao. In battle, put him and Zhu in front to absorb more hits. They’re Cao Cao’s soldiers anyway! After he flees he is gone forever and you’ll be left with only a memory of how great a general Lu Zhao was for the Han army.

Xu Zhu – 9600 soldiers

Analysis: First off I’d like to say Xu Zhu has a top 10 avatar in Destiny of an Emperor 2. Second of all, he is a Dian Wei clone (or maybe Dian Wei is a Xu Zhu clone) with a bit more strength and a bit less intelligence. What does this matter right now? Nothing, just run from him, but remember him you will fight him later.

Xun Yu – 9200 soldiers

Analysis: Another great Cao Cao general, Xun Yu is probably the deadliest Wei tactician outside of the Sima family and maybe others (Guo Jia comes to mind as does Yu’s nephew Xun You). Again, you’ll fight him later so don’t fret over his stats quite yet.

Yuan Shu – 400 soldiers

Analysis: Ah, it is a pity you fight him so early. However, the final battle involving him can be difficult, if you either aren’t rested or haven’t gotten used to the game yet. Yuan Shu has 4 other generals and is a solid general in his own right (easily the best general you’ll fight for a while). However, all of this doesn’t matter much as you are set up to win and Yuan Shu ultimately can’t overcome the deficiencies of his poor associates. Do go after Yuan Shu exclusively at first though, as he is your number one threat in this battle. After the battle, you will kill the Lord and take the seal he had stolen to declare himself emperor.

Yuan Yin – 320 soldiers

Lian Huo, Shui Tu, Luo Mu, Chi Xin

Analysis: Yuan Yin is a solid tactician, at this point in the game. However, his poor strength is a detriment to his chances to defeat you. Take out him and Chen Lan and the battle should be over, and you won’t be seeing Yuan Shu’s relative anytime soon.

Yue Jiu – 150 soldiers

Analysis: You fight Yue Jiu in the climax of the Yuan Shu reign. Now Yue really isn’t a bad general, except his soldier count is so low that one Lian Huo or one attack from Zhang Fei may take him under 100. Beware, he is balanced and can call upon tactics, so take him out quickly since his soldier count is so low anyway.

Zhang Fei – soldiers vary (generally pretty high)

Analysis: Zhang Fei is an interesting character. Personally, I think he’s a great character but when you get options, other characters with more manageable intelligences are worth using. I say this not because it’s bad that Zhang Fei struggles with tactics but more so tactic-protection, as you just can’t afford Zhang Fei getting Li Jian-ed or getting his soldier count depleted by every tactic cast his way. There are plenty of other generals in the 220-240 strength range with tactical abilities in the 150-180 range, so try to exploit these characters and put Zhang Fei in your 6-slot if you have the option and the desire. Or use him, as his strength is unmatched, but prepare to take care of him if you do.

Zhang Liao – 9400 soldiers

Str. 230 – Int. 205 – Agi. 175 – A.P. 235 – A.C. 240

Analysis: Zhang Liao is one of the best overall Wei generals, if not the best. This is of course excluding the two dominant rulers of Wei, Sima Yi and Cao Cao. Of the regular warlords, Zhang Liao could best any of them. Now this won’t matter at the juncture as you flee Cao Cao, but you will fight him later (a few times, actually) so remember his overall versatility.

Zhang Xun – 270 soldiers

Str. 120 – Int. 35 – Agi. 85 – A.P. 15 – A.C. 12

Analysis: Zhang Xun is probably the worst fighter in the final Yuan Shu battle. Because of this, you may want to ignore him for more dangerous generals. Once the real generals are eliminated, you can all-out and worry not about this one.

Zhu Ling – 380 soldiers

Analysis: You get Zhu Ling at the beginning of the chapter, with Lu Zhao (assuming you accept them from Cao Cao). Now, put Zhu at the top of your general list and let him absorb some hits. He’s good at that. Do notice he is better than Lu Zhao (besides agility), so manage the two accordingly. Along with Lu Zhao, he will flee after you return to Xu Zhou with the seal, never to be seen again.

Once you pull into shore, head north east, until you get to a village blocking your way. Enter and leave, and then head to Ji Zhou. Surprisingly enough, the villages are very adept at knowing what you need to do next. Yuan Shao jokes about you killing his brother-in-law Yuan Shu, and then opens up to you once you read the Zheng letter. Immediately he will consider you an ally and send you off with one of his elite generals, Yan Liang, to attack Cao Cao while he is in disarray. Taking a look at Yan Liang, he is obviously a powerful character. Now do what you wish in town and then head south back to the boat, and this time it takes you to a different area.

Head south and the first gate pits you against Song Xian, Wei Xu, and Lu Qian. All of them have nearly identical stats with Lu Qian being the best.

Yan Liang will get a critical hit every time so keep your hit points up and Yan Liang should have them dead soon enough. You may want to rest up, as the following battle isn’t so much hard as it is draining. Yue Jin, Yu Jin, Cheng Yu and Li Dian oppose you. Cheng Yu is a solid tactician so you may want to dispose of him first. After that, the rest of them are pretty equal with Yu Jin being the weakest. Anyway, take them out and continue on, it shouldn’t be too much trouble with Yan Liang still scoring critical hits. Don’t bother going back, you’ll see soon enough. The next battle involves you and one man, named ??????. He attacks first, and kills Yan Liang permanently. Liu Bei then retreats back to Ji Zhou.

Yuan Shao arrogantly sends out Wen Chou instead, and off you go. Wen Chou is another tough general as you can see. Unfortunately, his 235 attack does him no good when the mysterious character kills him also, but this time Liu Bei sees that it is Guan Yu! Liu Bei immediately withdraws, going back to Yuan Shao.

Yuan Shao then suggests a messenger to reach Guan Yu to bring him once again to Liu Bei’s side. After this happens the scene fades to Guan Yu’s situation.

1. Yuan Shao Generals

This page will analyze the generals you fight and acquire from the point in which Liu Bei reaches Yuan Shao in Ji Zhou to the point in which the scenario switches to Guan Yu.

Cheng Yu – 480 soldiers

Analysis: Cheng Yu is a dangerous character. By far, he is the most dangerous tactician you have faced (that you HAD to fight). Now fear not, as you do have Yan Liang with you during this time and he will be a automatic critical hit for you each time. Cheng Yu, fortunately, also has the lowest amount of soldiers in his group, so taking him out first may be a good idea. Otherwise, he will probably get you with tactics and heal his stronger generals if you choose to attack them first. After the battle, he’s gone.

Li Dian – 750 soldiers

Str. 130 – Int. 100 – Agi. 105 – A.P. 30 – A.C. 20

Weapon – Sword

Analysis: Li Dian is probably the most well rounded general at the second gate of Luo Yang. Again, you may want to take out Cheng Yu first, but Li Dian’s agility can be a pain so you may want to take him out next. And like Cheng Yu he is gone after the battle.

Lu Qian – 450 soldiers

Str. 170 – Int. 100 – Agi. 105 – A.P. 35 – A.C. 20

Analysis: Lu Qian is actually quite a good fighter, with a good attack and the best agility on his side. However, you do have Yan Liang during this. That said, you may wish to take out Lu Qian first and then Wei Xu, but it likely won’t matter too much. He’ll be gone after the fight.

Str. 245 – Int. 180 – Agi. 160 – A.P. 80 – A.C. 180

Analysis: Strange. Seems his stats are similar to someone. And that avatar isn’t a dead giveaway at all. Well anyway the mysterious Guan Yu has two functions, to kill Yan Liang and Wen Chou. Both of these things will happen and then Liu Bei will recognize him as his brother Guan Yu and will retreat.

Song Xian – 480 soldiers

Str. 150 – Int. 90 – Agi. 100 – A.P. 25 – A.C. 15

Weapon – Crossbow

Land: N/A

Analysis: Song Xian is a tricky character, as I believe he is the first crossbow-using general you face, although I may be wrong. Either way, you do have Yan Liang and taking him out should not be too much of an issue. His agility helps him out a bit, but that’s it, and he’ll disappear afterwards also.

Wei Xu – 480 soldiers

Str. 170 – Int. 105 – Agi. 90 – A.P. 25 – A.C. 20

Weapon – Sword

Analysis: Another decent-yet generic character in this area, he is the leader of the first gate. He is near the best at the gate so you may want to take him out first although with Yan Liang getting critical hits it won’t matter too much.

Wen Chou – 680 soldiers

Str. 235 – Int. 45 – Agi. 70 – A.P. 20 – A.C. 15

Analysis: It is a pity that Wen Chou spends no time in your army at all. He is significantly beefed up strength wise from the first one, although again it doesn’t matter as Guan Yu will slaughter him. You won’t even get to fight a general battle with him, just another Guan Yu kill in round one.

Note that with the Zheng Letter trick (having multiple Zheng Letter’s) you can recruit Wen Chou twice. But his HP is a static 680 so his value is limited.

Yan Liang – 600 soldiers

Str. 230 – Int. 55 – Agi. 95 – A.P. 10 – A.C. 15

Weapon – Spear

Analysis: Like his friend Wen Chou, his strength level went up nearly 50 points from the first Destiny of an Emperor. On top of that, for the first two gate battles you face he will get a critical hit each time he attacks. Unfortunately Guan Yu stomps on him and all that fun went for naught.

Yu Jin – 820

Str. 130 – Int. 115 – Agi. 45 – A.P. 15 – A.C. 30

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: This guy was in the last battle with over a 200 strength in DoaE 1, and now he is a jobber general for Yan Liang to crush? Sad really, although he is a strange character in that he has an A.C. of 30 which is uncommon at this stage by an enemy so combine that with his 820 soldiers and he has some defensive abilities. Little else though, as his attack is feeble, so keep him for last and then all out him.

Yue Jin – 500 soldiers

Str. 125 – Int. 75 – Agi. 55 – A.P. 20 – A.C. 20

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: Another decent general in the second gate battle, but one that falls just short of his comrades. His agility is poor and he will likely attack you last, so worry not about him and Yu Jin but take out Cheng Yu and Li Dian first instead. Like the rest of these Cao Cao generals, he will not appear again.

Guan Yu’s quest starts with him getting word of Liu Bei’s current location and immediately he sets off with Gan and Mi. Now for your own good, go into Gan and Mi’s inventory and take out the horse ChiTuMa and give it to Guan Yu and EQUIP IT. Just like Destiny of an Emperor one again, right? If you forget to do this and leave it in the girl’s inventory I would nearly start over personally. But that’s just me, I appreciate the fast walking. Anyway, leave the empty city. The guards will try to resist but Guan Yu gets out eventually, and head to the shack next door if you need to rest. Heading south, the first gate with Kong Xiu is barring Guan Yu’s way. Now, Kong Xiu is not a very good general so attack him twice and he’ll be gone, then all out.  Continue onward to see Han Fu who proves that the Destiny makers didn’t lose their brilliance in giving jobber generals classic lines. Personally, he surprised me this time that I played through, but still wasn’t an issue despite his agility. Also, don’t forget that during this one-man march, Guan Yu can also provide himself with tactics. Chi Xin is especially useful as he is by himself and it helps between battles so you don’t have to rest after each gate. Anyway, the following gate isn’t a fight, right away. Bian Xi greets you and wants to get trashed with you so Guan Yu follows Bian to the temple. You’ll see a bunch of guards. Bian offers you a drink, and you can take it or leave it. If you leave it you’ll fight Bian Xi with whatever amount of health you had. If you take it, you’ll lose a bit of health, and if you take another one you’ll lose more health and so on. If you take them all you’ll have like 50 soldiers or so. It is advised to not drink obviously but you can always Chi Xin yourself if you decide to kill him while drunk. You can go to the capital of Luo Yang now, to the right, and visit everyone. Buy weapons and armor for Guan Yu, and then continue on. Now at some point before the next gate, if you want to make it easy of course, go back to Hu Hua at the house. He will give you a Hu Ban letter, a letter for his son. When Hu Ban, who is at the next gate, is presented with this he will tell you to leave as there will be a fire. If you don’t give him the letter or choose not to heed his advice, you will end up staying at his “inn” and fighting Wang Zhi with fire knocking your soldiers down by 100 each turn. Sadly, this still shouldn’t be too hard of a battle even with that as Wang Zhi isn’t harder than the last few generals. Qin Qi hosts you at the final gate and again is no match. After heading into the boat and walking a few steps in the Ji Zhou area, you will encounter a battle with Xia Hou Dun.

He had been chasing you and caught up, and attacks you for a round or two. You can’t win obviously, as a messenger tries to stop Xia Hou Dun and then Zhang Liao successfully stops him. Walk north to the cottage. Rest up and you’ll learn of bandits dispersing everywhere. Head north to take on Zhou Cang. He is impressed and after a few turns gives in to the might of Lord Guan. Zhou Cang is not the greatest general you’re going to get, but he is a decent general at this stage in the game and you’ll have him for a while so get used to it. Continue eastwards now. Notice you can’t get to Ji Zhou castle yet, as you haven’t “quelled” the bandits yet. The castle to the east is populated by Zhang Fei. He will talk down at you and claim you to be a traitor, but tells you if you kill this usurper he will forget your deeds. Cai Yang is a decent general with a large soldier count, but alas is by himself and is overwhelmed by Guan Yu and Zhou Cang.  Enter Qing Zhou and reap your rewards. Both Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei will join you. Now you have the best party you’ve had since the beginning of the game, Gan and Mi aside of course. Head west to the house again and Guan Ding will tell you that he’ll send Guan Ping to note Liu Bei of your arrival. Guan Ping does this and joins Liu Bei. Guan Ping is statistically very similar to Zhou Cang but better overall. Now SLOWLY walk to the weapon shop to load up Guan Ping (makes you appreciated the day you got Chi Tu Ma, right). Go to Yuan Shao and Liu Bei will suggest allying with Liu Biao. While this is somewhat of a ruse to get out of Yuan Shao’s estate, you do end up actually allying with Liu Biao shortly here.

But leave the city, but you have an ambush on your hands. Guo Tu is there to surprise you with Tian Feng. Guo Tu is a solid general, not as strong as Yuan Shao’s previous warriors you’ve seen but solid nonetheless. If you equipped Guan Ping that should make this easier although if you forgot this is suddenly a tough battle as you would have only Liu Bei as an offensive threat. At any rate, dispose of them and head south. Recruit your brothers and their recruits, and have Guan Yu adopt Guan Ping. Suddenly, your team is immense. I suggest having Liu Bei in battle still, so have Chen Deng be your tactician with either Zhou Cang or Guan Ping out. As you head out it fades as you make your way to Liu Biao’s Jing Zhou.

3. Guan Yu Escape Generals

Bian Xi – 380 soldiers

Analysis: Now Bian Xi is the general who attempts to get Guan Yu drunk. You have some options, you can drink a bit, not drink at all, or drink once or twice. More damage is done the more you drink, so do what you want. Always remember you can Chi Xin yourself (you’ll go first), so thus he is no match for you regardless. With that known, I’d get Guan Yu all liquored up and then heal yourself and kill Bian Xi then. More vindicating and you know Guan Yu is enjoying it more.

Cai Yang – 680 soldiers

Str. 180 – Int. 120 – Agi. 115 – A.P. 35 – A.C. 25

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: Cai Yang is a general of Cao Cao who Zhang Fei orders Guan Yu to dispose of at Qing Zhou. He’s really not that tricky, and Zhou Cang should be there to help anyway. If not I wouldn’t call this a very tough battle regardless, as Cai Yang has a good amount of soldiers and decent statistics overall but still doesn’t match up with Guan Yu at all statistically. Kill the uncle of Qin Qi and get Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei!

Guan Ping – 9863 (high)

Str. 160 – Int. 110 – Agi. 100 (NOTE – adopting him as Guan Yu’s son raises his Int. and Str. by 10 each)

Analysis: Guan Ping is a solid character. Trust me, he’ll be in your party for a while, with his combination of high soldiers and decent stats. Definitely more valuable than Zhou Cang or Chen Deng, although when you start getting a lot of good generals (ones with over 200 strength) you’ll find him to be disposable. But you’ll get your use out of him for the time being, so throw him in front of your line and take him through Jing Zhou.

Guo Tu – 800 soldiers

Str. 195 -Int.100 -Agi. 65 – A.P. 25 – A.C. 15

Analysis: It is a little known fact that Guo Tu is my favorite “generic” avatar. Soon he will be on the top 10; I promise. He fights Liu Bei as you are leaving Yuan Shao in Ji Zhou, as he foresees you fleeing for Liu Biao. He comes with Tian Feng and is a tough general but for the three you have (assuming you bought/equipped a weapon for Guan Ping) he shouldn’t be too much of a problem. When you win go south to meet up with the rest.

Han Fu – 350 soldiers

Str. 85 – Int. 55 – Agi. 128 – A.P. 25 – A.C. 12

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: Han Fu is at the second gate for Guan Yu. Consequently, I’ve noticed when I type Han Fu’s name I tend to type Han Fun at first. Don’t know why that is. But he isn’t too tough, his agility is at a strangely high number, but still not higher than Guan Yu’s, so take advantage of the fact that Guan Yu has about three times the strength as this clown and kill him.

Kong Xiu – 320 soldiers

Str. 75 – Int. 70 – Agi. 55 – A.P. 25 – A.C. 12

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: Kong Xiu is the first general to “stop” Guan Yu on his path. After some bartering, Guan Yu just kills the stubborn Kong Xiu. Trust me, you will win easily, he has nothing going for him.

Qin Qi – 420 (!) soldiers

Str. 90 – Int. 50 – Agi. 75 – A.P. 25 – A.C. 15

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: Qin Qi is the final man at the port, stopping Guan Yu. His stats are poor and he has no tricks, so alas his attempt is futile. Dispose of him and then leave for Ji Zhou.

Tian Feng – 580 soldiers

Str. 155 – Int. 190 – Agi. 35 – A.P. 25 – A.C. 15

Analysis: Tian Feng is a fine tactician, as you can see. If this battle had one or two more generals it would be very difficult. Tian’s agility is pretty low though, so you may want to focus on him initially and you may get him killed with only having him have one or two turns.

Wang Zhi – 400 soldiers

Str. 50 – Int. 130 – Agi. 45 – A.P. 25 – A.C. 15

Lian Huo, Luo Mu, Chi Xin, He Yi, Heng Fang, Ce Jian

Analysis: Well, you don’t necessarily have to fight Wang Zhi, first off. You can get the Hu Ban letter (from his dad at the house way back there) and give it to Hu Ban to avoid the whole fire fiasco. If you choose to fall for the trick then he will cause fire damage each turn which can be a nuisance but you should still be able to overcome, as Wang Zhi can’t really take off anything by himself anyway.

Xiahou Dun – 1400 soldiers

Str. 230 – Int. 155 – Agi. 115 – A.P. 10 – A.C. 250

Ye Huo, Chi Xin, Bai Ma, Heng Fang, Ce Jian, Yan Dun

Analysis: You don’t have to fight the man really, but you spar with him for a round or two until Zhang Liao steps in. As you can see his stats are comparable to some of the best generals you have. But don’t worry, you don’t have to win the fight and he’ll be gone afterwards.

Zhao Yun – 9543 (low/medium)

Str. 240 – Int. 200 – Agi. 180

Weapon – Spear

Analysis: Zhao Yun is near the best general you can have and if he isn’t the best he’s 2 or 3. I’d say Jiang Wei is just a tad better (with his absurd agility) but Zhao Yun is going to be your best general until you get Jiang Wei. So utilize him as your best in-battle tactician, and he’s basically as strong as Guan Yu and Zhang Fei to boot. His soldiers aren’t what they were on the first one and his stats down the board are lower (from 245 to 240 and 216 to 200), but his agility seems higher than it was on the first one (although you can’t tell for sure). Regardless, put him in your party and leave him there.

Zhou Cang – 9396 (low)

Str. 165 – Int. 80 – Agi. 75 – A.P. 20 – A.C. 20

Analysis: Zhou Cang is a useful character for a good while, if for no better reason than you have no other option to fill your party. He wields an axe which is rare, and his attack is higher than Guan Ping’s, but he’s probably a bit inferior overall to Guan Ping. He may be considered more valuable than Chen Deng though, but strictly use him when you need to and definitely cater to the other more balanced characters when they become available to you. Still, you will use Zhou Cang for a time.

The chapter starts with you learning about the current situation. Yuan Shao, whom you were just with, has now been overran by Lord Cao Cao. Cao is after you, and you are currently under the sickly Liu Biao. He asks you to help out at Xia Kou to the south, so do so. First, buy as much copper weaponry/armor as you can. You won’t be able to afford it all. Anyway, do your town thing and then leave to the southeast.

You will run into a village and Huang Shao. He has a decent amount of soldiers but is by himself. All out and watch your new found and newly equipped generals destroy him and his rebel forces. Rest up and talk to the villagers.

Continue east for another simpleton. He Yi guards (and I use that term loosely) the next village. He is quite possibly easier than Huang Shao. The next one though, contains a whopping two generals, both of whom can’t stop you either. Gong Du is a bit stronger than Liu Pi so kill him first (assuming you’re not just all-outing this thing, which is a very justifiable move).

In this area you will get word that Liu Biao requested your return, so head back. You can visit Zhuge Liang’s hut in the northeast and Xia Kou in the southwest, but there will be nothing to do in the former and you won’t be allowed in Xia Kou.

Liu Biao at Jing Zhou castle is pleased and awards you Xin Ye. You may have already checked out this dump although there are actually citizens there now. Anyway, once you leave, Liu Qi (Liu Biao’s son) rushes to your side to warn you of Biao’s health. In Jing Zhou, you’ll see Cai Mao who is upset about the situation. Liu Biao will be in bed and warns you of Cai Mao. Then Yi Ji comes to tell you that Cai Mao plans on manipulating the throne by killing Liu Qi and putting Liu Zong on the throne, who favors Cao Cao. Thus chaos is abound and Yi Ji offers you the suggestion to head west to an estate across the bridge. So go near Liu Biao and walk towards the left wall (top left). All of a sudden you appear in a cave, fun stuff.

Again, these caves will get annoying with their depth. Certainly not the cakewalks of DoaE 1 lore. At any rate, head north and to the right for an Herbal. Head left and down to a staircase, and then head left for 71 gold. Take the lower staircase leading up (the one you haven’t taken before). The treasure below you is 114 gold coins. The path to the left is a dead end while the other path takes you back to the fork at the beginning, just take the lowest left path and take the staircase (And get the Herbal to the right of the staircase first, if you’d like). Take the lower path to get four treasures; 107 gold, Copper Saber, Scale Shield and a Powerpil. Go up and take the second path from the left to get 200 more gold or so, and then take the staircase to the left of this path. Go to the right now and get a copper sword, axe and spear. Now you probably already bought these so just sell them, if not, equip away! The lower path is 119 gold, so head back to the staircase. Then make your way right and go up when you get to the staircase and the treasure chest. Go here and you’ll end up by a lake. Take the path up for a copper armor, then take the path down then left to get out. You’ll end up right where Guan Ping is on the image above, and then take a left as you’ll recall Yi Ji recommended you do so.

Sima Hui will greet you and Liu Bei will say that he is worried of Cai Mao’s intentions. Sima Hui recommends a tactician for Liu Bei and tells him to rest on it while they talk in the morning. Zhuge Liang comes over during the night and worries that there is no savior for the land. Obviously it seems Zhuge and Liu are looking for eachother. Liu Bei begs to meet Zhuge and Sima Hui tells you to go east past the villages and then north. Do so and you’ll come to a forest patch, and a peach garden as you head north. Zhuge Liang’s house will be populated by his brother Jun, telling you that Liang is at Cui Zhouping village. Go to Xin Ye to wait for Zhuge to return now. However, when you get there Yi Ji will warn you of Cao Cao’s huge army coming your way. Yi Ji tells you to run into the forest and see what happens.

Get used to this forest, you’ll see it often. Grab the 90 coins on your way left, and continue all the way left to get another 80 or so coins. Now go down taking the right path for a Copper Helmet and an Herbal to the left and down a bit. Further south are two generals waiting for your party. With 1800 and 1700 soldiers respectively, Lu Kuang and Lu Xuang pose quite a threat. Also, their strength is in the mid 100’s with decent agility and tactics. You do have 5 good generals though, with copper equipment hopefully, so sustain your power and gang up on the two and you shouldn’t have THAT much difficulty. Head south to get 67 gold pieces and then leave south, only to find your path blocked. Walk all the way back (like I said, get used to this area). In Xin Ye, Zhuge Jun will be waiting in the throne room (although that’s very generous for Xin Ye’s). Liang is back at home, go see him!

Ah, Mr. Zhuge Liang, the object of importance in Destiny of an Emperor 2. He’s sleeping, of course. If you wake him, like the first one, he’ll be upset and give you the “is the house on fire?” line. So check him and click no….wait… and he’ll get up. After refusing to join initially, he finally does and the greatest strategist in the history of China is now the head of your army; just in time too, as Cao Cao is on his way!

Immediately as the text ends, Zhuge Liang is dispatching soldiers to certain areas to fend off Cao Cao’s “million man army”. Guan Yu is sent to ambush in the left hills with Zhang Fei on the right, Zhou Cang and Guan Ping in the rear, and Zhao Yun and Zhuge Liang with a frontal assault.

You’ll notice the town of Xin Ye has been upgraded a bit. Chen Deng was completely left out of the discussion of defensing against Cao Cao, as he is now not in your party but a member of the militia it seems. Or head of defense, whatever, it’s generals like Chen Deng that make Liu Bei’s army what it is, personally.

You’ll notice you’re moving slow (unless Chi Tu Ma is in Zhao Yun’s possession). That sucks but it’s only temporary. Zhuge has no equipment probably also. Hook him up at Jing Zhou castle, or you can just go straight to the forest if you want, you won’t really need improved weaponry here although the added defense helps. Also, note Zhuge Liang’s meager 255 intelligence count. Really though that’s another way of saying he can use tactics on ANYONE, period. So utilize this with your three attack spells (fire, water, boulder).

On your way there you might get a random general encounter for the first time in the game. Obviously you had noticed it was nothing but rebels and bandits up until now right? Well now generals show up in random battles, granted this batch isn’t too tough, and the difference to these as opposed to the ones in the first DoaE is that you cannot recruit them.

Now Cao Ren will oppose you as soon as you enter the forest. Zhuge threatens him and the battle begins. Yu Jin and Li Dian have been your enemy before near Luo Yang, and Cao Ren is obviously good overall with the bulk of his ability strength-based. Fortunately, Zhuge has a plan, so have Zhuge and Zhao cast spells or something first round. Fire damage then incinerates their party by 300 soldiers per general, and Guan Yu enters! Zhang Fei enters after the next turn and then it’s Zhou Cang/Guan Ping last.

NOTE!!!!!

If you defeat Cao Ren and the rest of his troops before the rest of your ambush parties (Zhou Cang/Guan Ping) come out, the emulator will freeze. This happened to me, at least. So basically, just defend or heal yourself and let the fire take them out, it’s the safe way to ensure a victory without having the game mess up. Or at least please save your state or game before this.

Return back to Xin Ye to get word of Liu Biao’s near-death situation. He will beg of you to take the throne from him but as a mere cousin Liu Bei will not accept. Eventually he will die, and Cai Mao will be there to both warn you of Cao Cao coming and to question you for not giving in to him. Hmm, he’s certainly not on board with your administration. At any rate, head back to Xin Ye. Zhuge Liang will give Liu Bei the idea that it is not out of the realm of reasonability for Liu Bei to assume the throne. Then you are prompted to head to Xia Kou to consult with Biao’s son Liu Qi.

Ironically enough, Liu Qi is in bed. What an assertive family Liu Biao has, eh. Liu Qi then begs of you (as in the game doesn’t let you not accept) to become the lord of Jing Zhou. Liu Bei does and soon enough he’s sitting on the throne. He orders you to throw out the Cai nephews (from Xin Ye and Jing Zhou castle).

Head to Jing Zhou to do so. This kind of sucks because you have to use Zhou Cang, and sit one of your tacticians (Zhuge, likely). Cai Zhong and Cai He will approach you, with Huang Zu and Han Sui as their allies. Now these generals are weak despite their obvious soldier advantage, so keep your health high to deliver maximum damage and picking up Copper Armor/Copper Shields at Xia Kou helps also. And again remember, now that you are fighting random general battles, you still can not recruit generals that you beat at gates/castles like you can in the first Destiny of an Emperor. Rest up and head to the second one, Xin Ye. I had a bit more trouble with this one although I’m not sure why, as the makeup of the battle is eerily similar to that of the last one. The only difference is Kuai Yue is an able tactician unlike anyone in the previous battle. Cai Xun, Jiang Xu, and Zhang Nan are generic yet decent fighters with their high HP counts, but not strong enough to make a difference against your army. Rest up here and head to the throne to hear that Lu Su, a Wu envoy, is coming to Xia Kou castle! Better get back there.

4. Jing Zhou Generals

The area “Jing Zhou” is obviously vast and is split up in several little sections because you travel through the same spots over and over. Ultimately, this covers from Guan Yu meeting up with Liu Bei and then through Bo Wang Po, until the Wu Alliance is proposed.

Cai He – 2100 soldiers

Str. 75 – Int. 80 – Agi. 55 – A.P. 60 – A.C. 30

Weapon – Sword

Analysis: You fight him after Cao Cao (ie Liu Biao’s former warlords) captures your castles. He is at Jing Zhou castle with Cai Zhong and some others. Obviously, statistically he is no issue, but his soldiers do probably double yours. Do keep yourself at peak health as this battle is no pushover, but again their statistics just do not add up to yours so annihilate them while healing and casting high level attack spells steadily.

Cai Xun – 2200 soldiers

Str. 100 – Int. 70 – Agi. 95 – A.P. 60 – A.C. 40

Weapon – Sword

Land: Sea

Analysis: As you see he is a sea general. You fight him in a castle so fear not. He has some decent warlords with him, and I’d say I generally have more trouble with this battle (at Xin Ye) than the Jing Zhou battle previously. However, again they are lacking statistically but make up for it in sheer soldier force. Well, you have a decent party, and do focus on Cai Xun as either the first or second general to go.

Cai Zhong – 2000 soldiers

Str. 80 – Int. 75 – Agi. 45 – A.P. 60 – A.C. 30

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: Truly, he is Cai He’s brother. How else do you explain how similar they are number-wise? And again worry more so about keeping your soldier count high, especially early in this fight to maintain yourself in this war of attrition. The higher your soldier count is the more damage you will invoke. Eventually, your guys will even out their soldier level and it should not be an issue after that.

Cao Ren – 1900 soldiers

Str. 205 – Int. 155 – Agi. 100 – A.P. 50 – A.C. 40

Ye Huo, Chi Xin, Bai Ma, Heng Fang, Ce Jian, Yan Dun

Analysis: Your first battle with Zhuge is against him and his two Wei friends. An ambush will be set and he will die of fire, just be wary of defeating him too early, as the game will lock if he dies before Guan Ping (the final ambush party) is sprung.

Gong Du – 1500 soldiers

Analysis: Oh my compared to the others this man is a beast no? Well, quite frankly these battles to settle Jing Zhou are some of the easiest forced battles you will come across. This is the hardest as it is the last and it has a whopping two generals to act as slaughtering practice for your newly formed party. With some of the combinations you can have in battle (Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, etc), this should be no contest.

Han Sui – 1800 soldiers

Str. 140 – Int. 110 – Agi. 75 – A.P. 50 – A.C. 25

Lian Huo, Luo Mu, Chi Xin, He Yi, Heng Fang, Ce Jian

Analysis: Hey, a decent general. Well not really but compared to the Cai brothers he is quite good. Also, he is the only tactician (if you call 110 intelligence “tactician-worthy”) in the battle. Take him out first and go on. Anyone know what Han Sui is doing here? I thought he was with Ma Chao and Ma Dai at this point in history? Hm..

He Yi – 1200 soldiers

Str. 80 – Int. 45 – Agi. 85 – A.P. 50 – A.C. 25

Weapon – Sword

Analysis: A joke. I’m shaming myself writing a guide to tell you how to beat him. I think my 2 month old niece could mess around with the keyboard/controller long enough to find the all-out option which will take him down in 2 or 3 turns.

Huang Shao – 1400 soldiers

Str. 105 – Int. 60 – Agi. 95 – A.P. 50 – A.C. 25

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: Huang Shao is the lone general in the village preceding the one that He Yi guards. His stats are better all around the board, but that doesn’t mean you should consider doing anything but all-outing.

Huang Zu – 1900 soldiers

Str. 130 – Int. 45 – Agi. 128 – A.P. 50 – A.C. 25

Weapon – Sword

Land: Pln

Analysis: Huang Zu is at Jing Zhou castle with the Cai brothers, and he is a relative nuisance with his high if not odd-numbered agility. His attack is decent but still worse than Han Sui below him. Again, the battle is not too big of an issue so finish him off with Han Sui and exploit the weak Cai brothers last.

Jiang Xu – 1700 soldiers

Str. 80 – Int. 40 – Agi. 65 – A.P. 50 – A.C. 30

Weapon – Spear

Land: Sea

Analysis: Another worthless Sea-based general, he is the worst general in this battle. He is stronger than Kuai Yue but is weak tactically so leave him alone and all-out when it is just him left.

Kuai Yue – 1600 soldiers

Str. 45 – Int. 175 – Agi. 60 – A.P. 50 – A.C. 25

Ye Huo, Liu Mu, Chi Xin, Bai Ma, Heng Fang, Yi Xin

Analysis: Kuai Yue is one of the better tacticians you have faced so far but alas he is a weak foe. However, do kill him first as he can heal his friends and cast spells.

Li Dian – 750 soldiers

Str. 130 – Int. 100 – Agi. 105 – A.P. 30 – A.C. 20

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: Along with Yu Jin, he was at the second gate in the Yuan Shao chapter, with Yan Liang. He is here for nothing other than to get burned by Zhuge Liang.

Liu Pi – 1300 soldiers

Str. 95 – Int. 80 – Agi. 70 – A.P. 50 – A.C. 25

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: You fight him in the last battle of the first section of Jing Zhou. Make sense? He is with Gong Du at the third village east of Jing Zhou, and he is worse than Gong Du so leave him (or just all-out) until Gong Du is toast.

Lu Kuang – 1800 soldiers

Str. 170 – Int. 55 – Agi. 95 – A.P. 55 – A.C. 30

Weapon – Sword

Land: Mtn

Analysis: Finally, a decent general. Along with his brother, Lu Kuang has a decent strength, but can be victimized with spells. Take advantage of this as he can take off a bit if you don’t get his soldiers down quick. Formerly of Yuan Shao’s forces.

Lu Xiang – 1700 soldiers

Str. 150 – Int. 55 – Agi. 100 – A.P. 55 – A.C. 30

Weapon – Sword

Land: Pln

Analysis: As you can see, Lu Xiang is basically a slightly faster and slightly weaker version of his brother Kuang. I’d go after Kuang first as the strength differential is probably more of an issue but they are basically the same so cast some spells and get their soldiers down and it should not be too hard. Also formerly of Yuan Shao’s forces.

Yu Jin – 820 soldiers

Str. 130 – Int. 115 – Agi. 45 – A.P. 15 – A.C. 30

Weapon – Sword

Analysis: Like Li Dian, he is here to get burned and that is all.

Zhang Nan – 2100 soldiers

Str. 100 – Int. 40 – Agi. 75 – A.P. 50 – A.C. 30

Analysis: The last of the Cai henchmen that took over Jing Zhou and Xin Ye. Zhang Nan is at Xin Ye and is a bit stronger than Jiang Xu but again is nto that difficult. I’d take out the tactician Kuai Yue first but Zhang Nan might be the first or second general you go after once Kuai is dead.

Zhuge Liang – 9565 (low/medium)

Str. 80 – Int. 255 – Agi. 155

Analysis: Hm. Well if you read the title of the game you’ll see it is the Story of Zhuge Liang. So yeah they’re probably going to make him pretty good right? Well he can use tactics on anyone and everyone, and his agility seems better than it was on the first one. In addition to using tactics on everyone it seems he is more apt to also take off more damage. So whether you are using him for his ridiculous tactics he gets (and the ridiculous TP he has) or if you want to have him as your fifth member to use tactics, he is going to be one of the top five generals in the game.

Indeed Lu Su is there and waiting at Xia Kou. Liu Bei sends you off to Wu now to go deal in negotiations with Sun Quan. Lu Su is an able tactician, so you may want to get him in battle or order him as tactician to get Zhuge in battle. I usually have Lu Su be the tactician with the sickly Zhou Cang being the sixth man, but it’s your choice, so now head south to Chai Sang.

Explore the town, as the weapon shop certainly has some nice options. You’ll also run into a man capable of creating gunpowder for you, so remember him. Head to the throne room to speak with Sun Quan and his associates Zhang Song (Zhao), Lu Meng, and Zhou Yu. As a means of proving yourself, you seemingly have to accomplish each goal that they have for you. Zhang Zhao (It says Zhang Song but I can’t help but think they messed that up as it even LOOKS like Zhang Zhao) complains about the Arrow Storm that Cao Cao has. Lu Meng wonders how you’ll ward off Cai Mao at Xiang Yang while Zhou Yu wonders how you’ll manipulate the wind. Sun Quan in general just begs for help. Ah, Zhuge Liang must save everything. The land outside is new so explore, you will find a village to the east of Chai Sang.

The people in this small village think you mean nonsense when you ask about changing the wind. However, the last man in town (far right side of town) will tell you to talk to the village elder, who is in a hut two to the left. He will tell you to sail east and look for a small island named Wa (Also note several people have stated they thought this meant Japan, with empress Miko and the visuals of the island). Return to Chai Sang and then to your ship and be off to the island. The people here seem to know about the wind but treat it as privileged knowledge. Also you will hear Miko is at Mt. Fuji so head north to that.

Upon entry head up and then grab the 127 gold and then continue east. Head south and then west for an Herbal and grab the 225 gold that is just right of the Herbal.

Head to the very southern edge for 122 gold pieces and a Copper Potion. Head northeast and follow the path as it heads to the top and then starts going down again. You will go across some large bridges. You can go right and leave or go left and get a Powerpil, 126 gold and a Tent. When you are ready, head east and then north and east again to leave, and then head north.

You’ll come to the Orochi and four Pythons. Use some magic, it should not be too difficult to kill the Orochi. Go north and talk to Empress Miko finally! She will give you the Wind Scroll and will be adamant about ZHUGE LIANG being the one to use it. So just give it to Zhuge now so you don’t have to worry about not having it in his inventory when the battle comes to use it. Now head ALL the way back and back to Chai Sang to rest. Zhou Yu will be impressed you have a solution to the wind issue.

That leaves two more things to do however. Defeating Cai Mao will require gunpowder to destroy the rocks past the forest (which is south of Xin Ye). One of the ingredients, Dead Wood, is right behind the old man in Chai Sang. Saltpeter is in a cave to the northeast so head there. You’ll cross a bridge and further east is the water-filled dungeon. You can use water tactics here, not that you’ll need to. Take the north path and continue east to a Copper Potion, and further east is a path that winds down and then east some more; this is where the Saltpeter is. You can walk out or Suo Di to teleport out. The guy who said he can make you Gunpowder now will. Take the ship north of Chai Sang to get back in Jing Zhou area.

Go past Xin Ye and Bo Wan Po and use the Gunpowder on the rocks. Xiang Yang will be in your sight now. Before you go and attack Cai Mao at Xiang Yang, you must be prepared. Heal yourself, and the cave to the west is worth checking out. This is the Shu Map cave that you will visit later to get the Shu Map and Meng Da. On the first floor, head all the way to the west and hit the last staircase in the southwest corner. Hit the next staircase and get the powerful Flame Armor to the west of you. Equip it and Suo Di out and go back to Xin Ye to rest if you wish, otherwise attack Xiang Yang.

Cai Mao is waiting at Xiang Yang, and will provide a challenge you you probably haven’t dealt with yet. Unfortunately for him, his overall versatility does not overshadow the weaknesses of his associates. Lu Gong provides nothing, while the other three can be competent generals.

This is where it helps to have Lu Su as the tactician so you can have Zhuge Liang in battle. Cast high level magic on Cai Mao, and then dedicate someone to keep your soldiers up while the other generals chip away. Wang Can is a solid tactician but I leave him go until Wen Ping and the bow-using Zhang Yun are dead. Zhang Yun surprisingly is one of the tougher outs in this fight with his pesky bow. Lu Gong is fodder.

Cai will tell you that you’re screwed anyway, but head in to the deserted town and reach the throne room. In the upper left part of the room is a staircase leading to a horde of treasures; an Iron Axe, Sword, Spear, Saber, Armor, Helmet, and Shield is good enough but the vital Arrow Storm is also here! Upgrade your equipment at Xiang Yang, but then leave for Chaisang to see Zhang Zhao. He will be befuddled that you have the Arrow Storm. Lu Meng likewise will congratulate you for assassinating Cai Mao.

Sun Quan will then acknowledge that you have done well for him. He will then ask you who should help formulate the plan and Pang Tong’s name is brought up. Evidently Sima Hui knows his whereabouts. Go back to his hut (west of Jing Zhou castle) and he’ll tell you that Pang Tong’s home lies to the southeast of Chai Sang, so go straight south from Chai Sang and then go along the coasts until you enter a marsh area. Work your way to the east and then down. There really is not a lot of options here, just stay on your boat and follow the course. After heading down head east for a Copper Shield. Steer east and south from here to exit. Once you are out, head south then west and you’ll see it. Pang Tong will suggest boarding Cao Cao’s fleet together and containing the flames. He’ll ask you for your opinion so say you agree and off he goes. Now head back to Chai Sang to make your final preparations before the big Cao Cao fight and make sure that damn Wind Scroll is in Zhuge’s inventory!

Get on your ship, with Zhuge Liang carrying the Wind Scroll. Automatically your entourage will go into his huge fleet. Cao Cao laughs at you but Zhou Yu responds with disdain. A fight ensues with Cao Cao’s army that you “fought” at Xu Zhou (with Xu Huang being substituted for Xun Yu). Use the Wind Scroll and the wind will blow. Cao Cao is in trouble and he knows it. He attempts to flee but can not, as Lu Meng fires away with the Arrow Storm to fatally injure his squad. The fire continues to spread.

Cao Cao flees but is chased down by Taishi Ci and his army of Zhou Tai, Gan Ning (who looks eerily similar to Zhou Cang), Huang Gai and Zhang Hong. Cao Cao is in shambles and he abandons the ships. Zhao Yun stops him on foot, but Zhang Liao and Cao Cao escape. Cao Cao flees south to the village to find Xu Zhu and Xu Huang.

Next they flee and Zhang Fei ambushes them and gets a few turns in. You may be able to knock out one of these two. Regardless, Cao Cao flees again and it seems as though he’s at the end of the line. Guan Yu appears, and they talk for a bit. Cao Cao barters his way into getting Guan Yu to allow him to flee by reminding Guan of aiding him and letting him go back to Liu Bei in the past.

The Han is back at their castle expecting ah, ULTIMATE HAPPINESS. Guan Yu comes in and says he failed. Zhuge Liang orders death but Liu Bei calms him down.

5. Wu Alliance Generals

The Wu Alliance section starts when Lu Su visits Xia Kou and ends after the Cao Cao Chi Bi attack and then when the Jingzhou Re-unification begins.

UPDATE: Thanks to the wonders of the Zheng Letter cheat, you can recruit Zhou Yu at Chaisang in this game! Along with Zhang Zhao and Lu Meng.Use a duplicate Zheng Letter on the Chaisang throne to get Zhou Yu, Zhang Zhao, and Lu Meng to all join.

Cai Mao – 2300 soldiers

Analysis: Needless to say Cai Mao can be a toughie. You’ll see him various times throughout the Jing Zhou quest, as he is mostly involved in the Liu Biao/Liu Qi/Liu Zong succession. You fight him after you get the Gunpowder to destroy the rocks past the Bo Wang Po forest to get to Xiang Yang castle.

He comes with decent generals but obviously he is the most dangerous threat. He is the definition of a balanced general, though no one statistic is too high so just have Zhuge spam your newest attack magic on him. Take him out as soon as possible and hopefully the rest of the generals won’t do too much damage by the time Cai Mao is done.

Lu Gong - 1650 soldiers

Analysis: Garbage. Look at his stats and smile that you have generals who have most of his stats tripled or quadrupled. He is of no concern and with a tough battle like Xiang Yang it helps to have a guy you can ignore while you take out the more important generals (ie Cai Mao, Zhang Yun, Wen Ping, etc). A second take makes me wonder if he isn’t the worst general in the entire game (add them stats up, folks).

Lu Meng – 1400 Soldiers

Analysis : More effective than Zhang Zhao certainly, and just a tad behind Zhou Yu in soldiers and Int. He might be a useful warrior in your party through the Jingzhou Re-Unification. Again though, how could they give him such a generic avatar? But wait it gets better with Zhang Zhao.

Lu Su – soldiers vary (high level of soldiers)

Analysis: A good general, but alas you do not have him for a long time. However when you do, it is advised to either use him for his soldier level or to take advantage of his intelligence level and have him be tactician allowing you to use Zhuge in battle. Do what you like but if you rather have Zhuge Liang as your tactician, you’ll find Lu Su is more valuable in battle than Guan Ping and Zhou Cang by far with his 235 INT.

Orochi – 1350 “soldiers”

Analysis: So you fight this thing and apparently it has soldiers. Also, it happens to have an A.P. and A.C. level. As a fighter, it is dangerous as the agility is higher than anyone you probably have and his strength can do a number on you. However, tactics are obviously the strategy to take, so anyone who is even a decent general should cast a high level tactic on him and his pythons and he should be down quite easily, allowing you to get the Wind Scroll from Himiko.

Taishi Ci – Honorable Mention

Analysis: You do not play as Taishi Ci, but rather he is the leader of the fleet that attacks Cao Cao. He comes with Zhang Zhao, Gan Ning, Zhou Tai, and Zhang Hong. You don’t see him once after this automatic battle so he really makes no impact but his avatar is here nonetheless.

Wang Can – 1650 soldiers

Analysis: Wang Can is a solid tactician that fights you with Cai Mao. He is not more dangerous than Cai Mao though so worry not and deal with him after Cai Mao and maybe Wen Ping.

Analysis: A decent warrior, but one that is neither fast or smart. Thus, Cai Mao is your first target and then you have a choice, but throw an attack spell at Wen Ping and he should not bother you after that.

Analysis: Now he is with Cao Cao in the naval battle. I put him on here and not the rest because this is the first time you see him in Cao Cao’s massive army. He is more of the balanced kind, not leaning as far to the Xu Zhu/Dian Wei side but is strong enough to make things difficult. But you don’t actually fight him quite yet so just admire your plan that foils Cao Cao and Xu Huang will flee with him.

Zhang Yun – 1750 soldiers

Str. 130 – Int. 145 – Agi. 90 – A.P. 30 – A.C. 25

Analysis: An underrated general no doubt. His arrow attack can be a nuisance to you and his tactics can help also. However he is not quite the general of Cai Mao, so consider him around that level just under Cai Mao and treat him as such, he shouldn’t be too hard. You’ll meet him again, with Jia Xu in the ultimate bow-fight!

Zhang Zhao 1400 Soldiers

Analysis: A decent tactician or a meatshield magician (for a while at least). Like Zhou Yu, his effectiveness is limited due to his poor soldier count. But if you want to bring an all-Wu party, Zhang Zhao can contribute. Somehow, the DoaE 2 guys gave Zhang Zhao the Zhou Cang avatar. Not entirely sure why they needed to do this…

Zhou Yu – 1500 soldiers Honorable Mention

Land: Sea

Analysis: Like Taishi Ci, Zhou Yu is a general who you neither fight with or against. Rather, his avatar is shown as he taunts Cao Cao during the naval attack. Or, that’s what we thought. Now he can be recruited by using a duplicate Zheng Letter on the Chaisang throne (see link on page 1).

His base statistics are amazing, a decent warrior with 240 Int. His agility is not that high but the bigger problem is his lack of soldiers. You will only be able to use Zhou Yu for so long, but compared to the other Wu generals he outshines both of them and will last longer with you. He is one of the most coveted characters as far as Zheng Letter recruits are concerned.

As the scene cuts in, Liu Bei gets a message of Cao Cao taking over Jing Zhou and Xiang Yang. This is your destination, so get your party ready to go. It looks like you will need to use Zhou Cang here as you have 6 characters without Lu Su.

Worry not, as Yi Ji is at Xin Ye. He offers his help, and while it is not much he is a serviceable tactician for right now (allowing you to bring Zhuge Liang into battle instead of limiting him to tactician). Yi Ji’s TP is low but it will suffice for now. Head for Jing Zhou.

Chen Jiao protects Jing Zhou castle with four outlaw armies. Chen Jiao is classic Wei, a good tactician and he can mess up your fighters with his high soldier count. Meanwhile, keep your soldiers up so you can do max damage. Yan Re him with Zhuge Liang.

In Jing Zhou Castle, go to the throne and search. You will find the Tally Order. This is essential for making the next few battles easier, though they are not impossible without it.

At Xiang Yang castle, you will find Xiahou Dun has occupied it. With the Tally Order, you will walk into town and surprise Xiahou Dun (lowering his physical defense). If you do not have the Tally Order, you can still win but Xiahou Dun’s defense is sky high (along with the forces). You would need to rely on Liu Mu and Shui Xing to take him out without physical attacks. Talk to the villagers of Xiang Yang. It seems you can use the port to the southwest.

Take the port to the southwest of Xiang Yang. This will take you to another port, go south to be at Yi Ling Castle. This is another battle where Tally Order makes their defense weak, but you can win without it too of course using Liu Mu and Yan Re. Cao Hong taunts you as you enter and Niu Jin is here, a stalwart attack. Inside, there is talk of Lu Bu being near, and Cao Ren has Nanjun it seems.

Nanjun castle can be reached by going east a bit then north. Cao Ren and Cao Ang are here, both are formidable but Cao Ren is much more difficult overall. Zhao Yun and Zhuge Liang should both be using high level magic like Yan Re on him to burn him down.

Cao Ren attempts to flee to Han Castle just to the north, but Lu Bu seems to have occupied it. Lu Bu and friends absolutely rout Cao Ren. Inside, this is your first chance to be able to go to a billeting. Here, you can drop off dead weight in Zhou Cang. Yi Ji you should dump off, but keep him around for a little bit longer for storyline purposes. Prepare yourself and go north to Han Castle to see what this Lu Bu character is up to.

At Han Castle you will find that you cannot damage Lu Bu and friends. Quickly retreat and go back to Nanjun Castle. It seems there is a student waiting for you to tell that Pang Tong is here in Nanjun. Check the house in the upper-right part of town to speak with Pang Tong.

Pang Tong has a Brocade Sack to open while fighting Lu Bu, and your strategy will then be in place he says. Anyone can use the Brocade Sack in battle unlike the Arrow Storm. After  you use it in battle, Guan Yu will feign defeat and Lu Bu will give chase. In the mean time, the rest of your party will have gotten in the castle before Lu Bu can make his way back. Now, you don’t do very little damage, and instead do quite a bit of damage.

Use your best spells on Lu Bu like Yan Re to burn his soldier count down quick. If you have Yi Xin or even Li Jian at your disposal, use them. Yi Xin should be enough to buy you some time to kill off Lu Bu. Zhang Ji and Li Jue are weaker tacticians while Guo Si and Li Su are more the fighter type, though none are that good besides their soldier count. Once Lu Bu is out the rest should go nicely.

Han Castle has some neat weapons and armor you may wish to purchase if you have the money. Iron Helmet and Iron Shield in particular. If you don’t have Yi Ji in your party now, add him from the billeting. Rest up and go to the east cave with Yi Ji.

This is a simple cave to traverse, you are just working your way east. Take the third south path for a Steel Armor, then take the east path that heads north and further east for an Iron Shield. The Northwest corner has some gold, and if you go to the south you will have an Iron Sword and another Iron Sword further east. Continue east along the southern path until you make your way out of the cave.

Ma Liang’s house is nearby and you need Yi Ji to enter. Zhuge Liang and Ma Liang will discuss strategy for re-taking the four southern Jingzhou estates from the wild governors. Evidently Ling Ling is the nearby castle to the east and south. This should be dealt with first.

There is a gate in front of Ling Ling castle actually, and Xingdao Rong will greet you with Liu Yan. Xingdao is a tough fighter, one of my personal favorites as the lone stalwart of Liu Du’s army. Fortunately he has low intelligence and can be had with tactics quickly, before he can do much damage physically. Just use Yan Re on him a few times, don’t waste too many tactical points as another battle looms. Liu Yan is a mediocre general that won’t bother you much especially once Xingdao goes down.

Xingdao Rong and Liu Yan then flee to Ling Ling Castle to the southeast. Hopefully you are well rested and don’t have to head back to Han Castle to rest up. You now have Xingdao Rong, Liu Yan, and Liu Du here. Liu Du is an okay tactician but Xingdao represents the biggest threat, so take him out with any tactic points you have spared. You can rest after you win this battle, but there is not much to do at Ling Ling Castle. However, if you use the Zheng Letter duplicate on the throne in Ling Ling, you will sometimes acquire Huang Zhong.

Now go straight south from Ma Liang’s house to find Gui Yang Castle. Bao Long is waiting at the gate, along with Chen Shu (should be Chen Ying). Chen Shu is vulnerable to tactics, but is stronger. Meanwhile Bao Long is not quite as strong but his Int. is a little higher. Neither are much of a threat for your band of tigers. Go inside, as Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun will go around the back assuming it is a trap. But as Zhuge Liang goes to the throne room by himself, he is ambushed by Zhao Fan, Bao Long and Chen Shu! Fortunately out of no where Lu Bu joins Zhuge Liang. Lu Bu will maul these guys for you.

Gui Yang is where you can really start forming a dominant party. Use the Zheng Letter duplicate on the throne to recruit Lu Bu! This is definitely the one of the most useful recruits you can get with the Zheng Letter. Just keep coming back with a small party and you can continue to recruit Lu Bu at the Gui Yang Throne. With 3800 soldiers, Lu Bu will be in your party for a while. Dump off Guan Ping and Yi Ji from your party here, so you can have Zhao Yun, Zhuge Liang, Lu Bu, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu!

West of Gui Yang and you will find a small village. Mostly you will hear about Gong Zhi and Jin Xuan at Wu Ling Castle. Gong Zhi is thinking about the Liu Bei army at the west cape, so visit him there.

At the cape, Gong Zhi says he will see you at Wu Ling Castle. So, head back towards Wu Ling Castle, and Jin Xuan indeed will be waiting for you. He is by himself and is not a formidable opponent by any means. This battle should not require much strategy. Afterwards, the bridge is lowered and Gong Zhi shoots down Jin Xuan. Within, you can spend some money on weapons and armor, along with resting.

Chang Sha Castle is the last castle to take, but it will be the hardest. The old tiger Huang Zhong is at the gate of Chang Sha, ready to duel Guan Yu! After two rounds, the ‘fight’ is over. Return back to Wu Ling to rest, and then head to Chang Sha for a huge battle.

Han Xuan leads the group, with Huang Zhong, Yan Ling (Yang Ling), Han Hao and Wei Yan. This battle can be brutal if you are not built up or have a good party. The problem is Wei Yan and Huang Zhong are so powerful that you forget that Yan Ling and Han Xuan aren’t too bad themselves. Han Hao fortunately does not bring much to the table, but he will certainly be dealt with last. Neutralize Wei Yan early on with Yi Xin, Li Jian or high level magic. His Int. is low so he can be had. Huang Zhong is pretty smart so you might want to just stick to having Zhuge cast spells on him. Try to get a high level tactic on Yan Ling and Han Xuan to get their HP down and to take some of the juice out of their attack. This is a war of attrition so be smart about tactic use, and keep your party healed. Having Zhuge Liang as your tactician in a 5 party system is so beneficial in this battle, to have Zhuge’s prowess in battle along with his high TP count.

Enter Chang Sha Castle and speak with Wei Yan at the gate. Definitely let him join your army. If you are still using someone like Guan Ping or Yi Ji, take them out for Wei Yan. The 240 Str is hard to argue with despite the low Int. Unless you abused the Zheng Letter trick, you will want him in your party.

In town go to Huang Zhong’s house. He is sad that he can’t bury his bow with his former leader (who you can strangely still fight in random battles). Anyway, you can find this bow to the cave west of here and you need it to recruit Huang Zhong and continue the story.

Take the south path down the stairs in the cave, then the right path for a Thunder Sword and Copper Portion. The left side gives you 1000 gold coins, and then head back to the beginning of the cave. Go west this time, then look to go south for a four way split. South for 604 gold coins, left for Copper Potion, and the upper left hand path nets a Copper Bow. North for the staircase, and then east for an Iron Helmet and south for the Youyuu Bow! This is Huang Zhong’s bow, so use Suo Di to teleport out and go to Chang Sha. Huang Zhong will join you after giving him the Youyuu Bow. I tend to not use him despite his nice stats, but many stand by his bow-wielding ways.

Return to Ma Liang’s house to share the good news. Unfortunately, a messenger runs in to say Lu Bu has betrayed you and is ruling chaotically in Gui Yang! You must return there and deal with him (you might even have a Lu Bu in your party with the Zheng Letter Trick).

Lu Bu is at Gui Yang Castle with only Zhang Ji, a tactician. Spam all of your magic attacks on Lu Bu here to take him out quickly, then Zhang Ji will quickly follow. Rest and save if you want, then go to the Ling Ling Gate.

Lu Bu greets you here with some tricky Jingzhou fighters in Xingdao Rong, Yan Ling, and Liu Yan. Yan Ling and Xingdao are underrated, powerful fighters. Of course Lu Bu will take your attention first, it might help to have Huang Zhong with instead of Wei Yan to have an extra person using spells on these idiots. Get each of their HP down quick and their attack strength will dwindle. Use Yi Xin and or Li Jian to take out Lu Bu.

Lu Bu then retreats to Ling Ling Castle. Rest up, and head towards the place. He may surprise you when you encounter him here, which case you could be in big trouble. They take off heavy damage at first when their soldier counts are high. You will want to get the jump on Lu Bu, either draining his HP quickly with powerful tactics or using Li Jian to have him attack his friends. You remember the other generals here, Li Jue, Guo Si, Zhang Ji and Li Su. It’s good to get at least one spell in on them to lower their attack, but once Lu Bu is gone you should have no trouble take these guys out.

Finally you can go to Ma Liang’s house with news of victory and peace in Jingzhou. Well, turns out they’ve already left to Xin Ye Castle.

6. Jing Zhou Reunification Generals

The Jing Zhou Reunification section is generally considered from when you get back doing the Wu Alliance things in Chaisang and ends once Lu Bu is destroyed after taking Jing Zhou from the four governors.

Bao Long – 2900 soldiers

Str. 125 – Int. 90 – Agi. 115 – A.P. 90 – A.C. 100

Analysis: A Gui Yang guard who doesn’t really provide too much. His first battle with Chen Shu is pretty ridiculous, and the battle in the castle isn’t much better. Bao Long can be recruited at the throne here and elsewhere, though he offers little use compared to the other Zheng Letter recruits.

Cao Ang – 2200 soldiers

Str. 175 – Int. 110 – Agi. 110 – A.P. 70 – A.C. 60

Analysis: Cao Ang is with Cao Ren at Nan Jun castle. He is a decent general and a good complement to his relative Cao Ren, but just the two of them should not be able to stop you. Take out the more dangerous Cao Ren first but beware as Cao Ang is not completely feeble.

Cao Hong – 2800 soldiers

Analysis: Cao Hong is at Yi Ling with Niu Jin, the first castle you reach. He is not too dangerous and probably should be second priority in favor of the stronger Niu Jin. Take the latter out and then all-out the versatile yet hopeless Cao Hong. If you didn’t get the Tally Order, this battle will be hard as Cao and Niu will have VERY tough defense, unbeatable without spells. So use your best attack spells to wear them down if this is the case.

Cao Ren – 2600 soldiers

Analysis: Cao Ren is at Nan Jun with Cao Ang. Cao Ren is a formidable opponent as one look at his stats will show. Don’t let this discourage you as you have many (probably all 5) able generals and the two of them simply should not be able to overwhelm you. Knowing this, concentrate on Cao Ren and once he is gone the rest should fall in place.

Chen Jiao – 4100 soldiers

Analysis: Chen Jiao is at Jing Zhou castle, the first battle you face as you head back from the alliance with Wu. He is alone and is an able tactician and nothing else, so all-out him and I doubt he’ll do much to you. His HP is high though so keep yours up the first few turns. This is more important in the sense of you getting the Tally Order (see walkthrough) for the upcoming battle, by searching the Jingzhou Castle throne.

Chen Shu (Chen YING) – 3000 soldiers

Str. 150 – Int. 45 – Agi. 125 – A.P. 80 – A.C. 90

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: Initially, you fight him with Bao Long. Then, you fight him later in the castle with Bao Long again but Zhao Fan is with and Lu Bu is on your side. The first time you fight him when he is just with Bao Long, use spells as they are decent fighters but are inept at tactics. In the second battle, it won’t matter what you do as Lu Bu will kill these three in three turns.

Guo Si – 3000 soldiers

Str. 135 – Int. 85 – Agi. 85 – A.P. 90 – A.C. 100

Weapon – Sword

Land: Pln

Analysis: Guo Si is one of the three random (and weak) generals that accompany Lu Bu in this chapter. You fight him at the battle at Han castle, where you win nearly automatically. Then in the final battle of the chapter, Lu Bu’s death, you fight him the last time. He is tied for the best fighter outside of Lu Bu, so you may want to keep that in mind, although in all actuality he really is not an issue and should be saved for last along with Li Su.

Han Hao – 2900 soldiers

Str. 105 – Int. 95 – Agi. 60 – A.P. 90 – A.C. 100

Analysis: Really, he has nothing worthwhile to tell you about, other than you fight a guy later in the game with the same name. Certainly he is the worst general although Han Xuan is riding his coattails for that distinction as well. Leave him alone and deal with the meat of the order at Chang Sha, and once they’re done then you can all out Han Hao.

Han Xuan – 3600 soldiers

Str. 85 – Int. 50 – Agi. 80 – A.P. 100 – A.C. 110

Weapon – Sword

Land: N/A

Analysis: His goodness rivals that of Han Hao but his weapon and defense levels bail him out. And soldier count. However, he is still nothing to worry about as Wei Yan and Huang Zhong, even Yan Ling, are bigger priorities. Also of note is the fact that Huang Zhong does a ritual with Han Xuan’s Youyuu bow in celebration of his passing, yet you can fight him in random battles. Hmm.

Huang Zhong – 9385 (lowest)

Str. 220 – Int. 175 – Agi. 150

Weapon – Arrow

Analysis: In the opposing battle, he can be tough. I would consider him the first priority over Wei Yan as he can use tactics and defeating Wei Yan is not too tricky as he can be had with tactics easily unlike Huang. Do be careful and you may want to beat them both up simultaneously and absorb your hits from the other three. Now, many a heated argument I have gotten into regarding Huang Zhong’s performance in DoaE2. First of all, I dislike the bow. Second of all, I prefer Wei Yan (yes I know, Wei Yan is worse overall) as the strength bonus is noticeable. Also, you have Guan Yu, Zhao Yun, and Zhuge Liang fighting so you can afford to have a more meat and potatoes guy like Wei Yan and not suffer for the lack of intelligence. But look you can use him if you wish and you’re probably not going to have too much of an issue with it if you do or if you don’t, because he is good and there are many other good choices out there too.

Jin Xuan – 1800 soldiers

Analysis: Jin Xuan is the lone general at Wu Ling. He is worthless and only entertaining to view when being killed by the even more meager Gong Zhi. What a hoot! Get your laughs and move on folks.

Analysis: You fight this guy three times. The first time is at Han where he is easy, and the second time is at Gui Yang where Lu Bu initially turns on you. However it is just those two so worry not. But the last battle is the final Lu Bu battle and he can be a nuisance here. Take him out (along with Zhang Ji) to ensure these tacticians aren’t messing with your fighters with Li Jian or healing Lu Bu with Tong Xian.

Li Su – 2800 soldiers

Analysis: Li Su is similar to Guo Si in his abilities but he is faster yet lacks in intelligence. Ignore him or throw a tactic his way to cripple him, he won’t be an issue really. You fight him in the two main Lu Bu battles.

Analysis: Liu Yan is with Xingdao at the gate and with Liu Du at Ling Ling. He provides tactical support, although not much of it. Consider the other two more dangerous and take them out accordingly in both battles. Also he appears at the Ling Ling gate a second time with Lu Bu.

Analysis: The great Lu Bu. I think he was played up better in the first one. You had several tough battles with him (the Dong Zhuo campaign, the Yuan Shu/Shao campaigns) in the first DoaE yet you really only have 1 against him and he is supported by fools. The first fight at Han is of no issue as you are destined to win after the plot event. The second battle is with two generals which automatically makes it a pushover. Finally, like I said before his supporting cast just does not add up and once you destroy him with tactics (preferably Li Jian!) the battle will nearly be over. Like a leaf in the wind indeed, Lu Bu.

But, remember you can use the Zheng Letter duplicate at the Guiyang throne to recruit Lu Bu into your party. He has a static 3800 soldiers which should last you a while, and his classic 255 strength. His low Int. makes him susceptible to tactics in the more dangerous, late-Wei areas, but Lu Bu is one of the real treats out of all the recruits from the Zheng Letter bug. Best part is, you can keep coming back to the Guiyang Throne with 2 or 3 characters and use the Zheng Letter again and again to get multiple Lu Bu’s!!!

Ma Liang – 9440 (low)

Analysis: Well, you get him after you complete this section of the game. Now he can be a decent character, but I wouldn’t use him for battle. Why not? Well, 45 strength is just too low. You have to draw the line somewhere and you can find generals with comparable intelligence with a much higher strength and agility level. Well, do what you wish and if you decide to use him as your tactician, he learns An Sha later.

Analysis: Oh my, a solid overall general. Well, if you prefer an able tactician over a Wei Yan or Huang Zhong or even Zhang Fei, Ma Su can provide that with a balanced attack. Chances are though, your party is set on Zhang Fei, Guan Yu, Zhuge Liang, Zhao Yun, and Wei Yan. Ma Su probably shouldn’t replace any of them and probably is a notch below Huang Zhong as well. Nice try, underrated definitely, just suffers from having too many quality Shu generals.

Niu Jin – 2600 soldiers

Analysis: His stats are very similar to those of his DoaE 1 days. His strength is decent and worth warranting him first priority over Cao Hong. Once he is slaughtered via tactics, you can all-out. Again if you missed the Tally Order this will be significantly more difficult and Niu Jin will rock you unless you attack him with the best tactics you have.

Wei Yan – 9396 (low)

Analysis: Ah, Wei Yan. A personal favorite, even though I generally dislike Zhang Bao-like characters with a sub 100 Int.

Now when you fight him beware as he can use tactics and his attack is devastating! He was tough in the first one but now with 240 strength instead of mid 220’s, his hits are as rough as anyone not named Zhang Fei. His intelligence is down from the last one, so take advantage of this and harm him with Zhao Yun and Zhuge Liang if possible. Getting his soldier count low should be one of your prime concerns in this battle. A couple of tough tactics and he’ll be down for the count.

Now as a member, he is very valuable. I always use him over Huang Zhong, despite the lower intelligence, despite the lower agility, despite the fact that he’ll get Li Jian-ed like mad in the upcoming battles. Look, his attack is a lot better than Huang Zhong, more than the 20 point differential indicates. And at this juncture in the game, I’d rather have that extra attack. Again, be prepared to see him take tactics like Zhang Fei (well not that bad). But enjoy, his attack is brutal. However, after playing through with the Zheng Letter recruits I find Wei Yan doesn’t get much use when compared to Xiahou Dun, Lu Bu, revived Pang Tong, etc.

Xiahou Dun – 3600 soldiers

Analysis: Xiahou is by himself at Xiang Yang, but can be very very tough if you don’t have the Tally Order. You can still get by, but physical attacks will be nearly useless so you’ll need to use Liu Mu or some other offensive tactic to displace him.

Xingdao Rong – 2600 soldiers

Analysis: Well, Xingdao is a good fighter and one of the best you’ll see around here. Now, his intelligence is also one of the lowest you’ll see. You fight him three times as well, twice at the Ling Ling gate (with Lu Bu the second time) and once at Ling Ling castle. He is dangerous in each one but not when you use tactics.

Yan Ling – 2400 soldiers

Analysis: Now Yan Ling is the key to this battle at Chang Sha. As you can see his attack is good and his other stats are well rounded, but he will tear through you if you ignore him. Certainly, he is more capable than the other two non-playable characters. Treat him as such and don’t all-out until he’s dead or near dead. Oh, and you’ll see him again at the Ling Ling gate with Lu Bu.

Yi Ji – 9470 (low)

Analysis: Yi Ji is a nice guy. I like him a lot, he helps you out in certain situations during the game despite his crappy stats. But in battle or as a tactician, he just is not good enough. Unless you are high never put him in battle, his attack is ridiculous and his tactical ability is as good as Guan Yu. Towards the end of the game I notice he is generally at the top of the billetting list. You only need him when you go to southern Jing Zhou, as he must be there to introduce you to the Ma brothers. I also must say that a lot of times early on I would have Yi Ji as my tactician so that I could get Zhuge Liang in battle.

Zhang Ji – 3200 soldiers

Analysis: Another decent tactician with Lu Bu, along the same lines as Li Jue. However his tactical ability is marketably better so take him out after Lu Bu. However he still isn’t that dangerous other than to possibly Li Jian a guy or two.

Analysis: What a quality general and guy. He tries to capture Zhuge Liang with trickery but all he gets is Lu Bu. Lu Bu then proceeds to ounce him and his two weak generals and that is the last you see of Zhao Fan.

Oh my! Is this really Xin Ye? It is, with new weapons and armor to boot! Also, Chen Deng will join your active party again (and take a permanent seat in your billetting. Might as well of left him guarding the city). Chen Deng will always be a well respected general in Liu Bei’s army. Head north to the palace to recruit Ma Su and Ma Liang (both solid generals but both may be tough cuts; Huang Zhong is good and probably should be considered better than Ma Su. At the same time, Zhuge leaves the party here so you may want to use Ma Liang as your strategist and Ma Su to take Zhuge’s spot in battle, giving you 6 members with Wei Yan and the Zhao/Guan/Zhang brigade). So you are told to see Sima Hui, so go check it out. Sima Hui seems to want you to recruit Pang Tong and he hands over a bottle of “Jiu” that will do the trick.

Once in Xiang Yang, head for the house in the back of the town isolated by the lake. A bearded man will be here, go say hello.

He smells the liquor (“nice little item”) and after you give him some he will say he’ll deliver the Young Phoenix. However he wants you to stop the bandits in the northwest first. Naturally, go do so. It is in the forest (not the cave, that’s later), near the center (towards the upper left center of the forest structure, you’ll figure it out). Inside, head east for 231 gold pieces. A Copper Potion and 200 more gold are to the east here. A Revive is in the upper left, and head right and then up from here. You’ll enter an area with tents and Liao Hua in the back with three females. Fight him (he’s by himself, not hard) and show him what happens to men who kidnap women. After you work him he wants to join you, like you need the trash wasting away in your billetting. But nonetheless he must join, so let him. He is an ok general and you would have used him had you got him 4 hours ago and not now when you have several good generals. Leave now back to the man who spoke of Pang Tong.

Instead, Pang Tong will be sitting there and the other guy will be nowhere in sight. Odd, well Pang Tong joins you easily and then you are back in Xin Ye. There you discuss matters as Zhang Song comes in to ask you to invade and take over Shu. This is no easy decision due to his relative Liu Zhang being there. Ultimately the plan is to go but a Shu Map must be obtained so you are sent to the cave to the northwest of Xiang Yang. Get the Meng Da letter from Liu Bei. Use the Zheng Letter on Liu Bei here, and you can recruit Ma Su. Then talk to Liu Bei to recruit Xiahou Dun. Yup, strange. But true. Xiahou Dun is a beast (3600 soldiers 230 str 155 int 115 agi)

With Pang Tong available ( He is a very very solid general, with a 150 attack to go with a 245 intelligence) I would reduce the party to 5, with the usual 4 (Wei/Zhao/Zhang/Guan) representing the rest of the group unless you have Zheng Letter generals like Xiahou Dun, Lu Bu, etc.

When in the cave get the two treasures on this floor, one being 600 gold and the other a Silver Potion. As stated in the previous chapter, you can visit this cave early than right now to get the Flame Armor at the bottom, but otherwise there isn’t much you can do until you get the Liu Bei Letter. Anyway, the staircase to the left of the beginning (which also leads to the one in the upper left of the area) leads to 1000 gold coins. The staircases in the upper right and upper middle section lead to a Tactical Potion and another Silver Potion. Finally, go to the bottom left part of the first floor to get to where you need to go.

The Flame Armor down there is good, very good. Meng Da will allow you to proceed when you read the Liu Bei letter to him. When you try to leave he blocks you, asking to join. He’s a nice guy so let him; he brings his fat horse too! His agility is a whopping 185, which is fun to experiment with. Is he one of the top 5 generals you have? No, but putting him in your party won’t hurt that’s for sure. At the throne room, the plan of attack is being discussed. Fa Zheng from Shu runs in to tell you that the Han Zhong army has seized Xia Meng citadel and he requests your help. Zhao Yun and Guan Yu are dispatched to take care of the land you have already overtaken, so it is just Pang Tong and Zhang Fei in your party.

Now when you get control, talk to Liu Bei. He gives the same line as Yi Ji did when you go back to Xin Ye and can recruit him (“Oh Pang Tong, it is I Yi Ji…etc) and there is a prompt at the end to let him join you. Say yes, and supposedly you just recruited Yi Ji, but Liu Bei instead gets off the throne and turns into Zhang Lu. WHAT?! Everything I just said is true, even if it doesn’t make sense. Zhang Lu has 5100 soldiers plus 170 str 190 int 175 agi. Another strange but dominant recruit. Weirder yet, his attack is a strange fireball at the bottom of the screen….He will kill most of the people he hits with a few attacks, at least for a while once the generals are still weak and his soldier count is twice the size of anyone on your side (at least). Even at the end of the game though, Zhang Lu is still a force. Like Lu Bu and Xiahou Dun and Zhou Yu, they do not gain levels thus are stuck with their soldier counts. But 5100 is nice until the end pretty much.

At the Xiang Yang port, you will see Fa Zheng. He is a Zhang Song supporter and naturally he wants to join so let him, although I wouldn’t use him (115 attack 210 intelligence). The ship takes you to Fu Shui castle, where you will learn about the blood oath and of Ma Chao. There are really no weapons/armor here for you. Anyway, once you are done head north and then east quick.

A house is there and Li Qi lives there. When you reveal yourself he will go in detail about his situation and about the blood oath between Ma Teng and Liu Bei. He marks the spot of where it is buried on your Shu Map, so check it out and find it for him (you cannot go here, even if you know the location from playing through the game previously, until you talk to Li Qi). You’ll wish you never had to go to this damn place…

So you go to where it is (it is obvious when you are in range, it’s the non-forested area). This is a difficult dungeon and a lot of people have problems with the stone walls on the lower floor. Really, most of it is a trial and error issue, you’ll figure it out eventually. Use the FCE Emulator and ~ to speedup the game, that helps the annoyance factor.

I’ll try to list your options as best as I can. As you enter head west and north when you can. A Dragon Sword is here, good for Zhang Lu or Pang Tong. South of here is a revive and 232 gold coins are to the east. Now go all the way back to the beginning and head north and east for a Copper Potion. Take the upper-most west path now that leads down and take the staircase at the end. Now you are at the stone wall area. East of the entrance is blocked (this is the area that you circle around to when you pick the wrong choice and get blocked off and sent back to the beginning) so head west and north.

Go east when you can for 284 gold coins and a Steel Shield just above it. Two rows up is a Silver Potion and a Flame Armor above that. As you head further north from here you will be blocked off, so head east and south to get back to the beginning of this maze. You need to enter and re-enter the staircase to reset the stone walls. When you are ready to advance, remember the words of the man in north-east Fu Shui; take the east path 3 times and the west path 4 times. This translates to going north through the eastern-most path 3 times and then going all the way to the west wall and going north 4 times through that one. You already got the treasures on the east wall but there is a tent that is all the way to the east after you pass the western-most north path 3 times (ie the east path BEFORE the staircase). So get this Tent and walk all the way back to the west and go north, and then all the way east to the staircase. If you go too far north, you’ll have to walk ALL THE WAY AROUND. Count to four and then head east and you won’t have a problem. The bottom floor is a little odd also. It has things at the middle of the four-ways to invert your path.

You can still get everywhere on the map, it’s just a matter of where you come at the paths. As you head west and then south to enter, advance to the right while staying to the north. You will come across a chest of 596 gold coins. If you take the path going right that is just under this one, you will come to the Blood Seal! You can Suo Di if you want but there are more treasures so I’ll guide you to them quick. Under the Blood Seal route is a Smoke Bomb and a few paths under this is a Silver Token. Now Suo Di out.

After returning to Li Qi, he will be pleased and will visit Ma Chao on your behalf. Then, he will say Ma Chao requested to see you. Ma Chao wants to test you when you get there, so let him! Well, him and his cousin Ma Dai are tough, but just the two of them can’t best you unless you fight irresponsibly. Take the two of them down with Luo Shi and recruit both. Now you may want to head back to Fu Shui to put these two in (over Huang Zhong and Meng Da), they are dominant and you will use Ma Chao for the rest of the game probably.

North of Xia Meng Citadel is Yang Ping Gate. Yang Ang is here, with Yang Ping, Cheng Yin and Yang Ren. Yang Ren is an average tactician while the other three are standard brutes; take them out and rest. When you are ready, continue past Yang Ping citadel to the cliff area.

Take the left passage for a Silver Potion, and then take the right one. At the next hook, take the lower path for 592 gold coins. Again when you get another hook, take the lower one for a Tent and return to the upper path. Continue on for a while and another two-way fork will emerge, with the upper path leading to 250 or so gold coins, and the lower path leads to another fork (take the lower one as you can see the treasure below you, it’s a Dragon Sword) so head down and then up. After this there are no longer any forks so continue on, lead and head for Nan Zheng Gate! Here Yang Bai will greet you, although he is not the cause for concern. The man named Pang De, as your math skills probably pointed out to, has much higher stats than anyone else on their side. Obviously, go at him with your fighters and have Pang Tong throw a Da Re or Tou Shi at him and he should be down in a round or two. Then, you’re fighting against three garbage generals. There is an Inn here so blow all your tactics if you saved them.

Inside you have two options. A man named Wang Ping says he can bribe Yang Song for 10,000 gold pieces and he will open the Han Zhong gate. Say yes or no, although YOU WILL need to pay him the 10,000 to capture Han Zhong, trust me. If you choose not to, go there and you will notice you can’t take off more than 3 or 4 soldiers. You can retreat and attack again, but nothing will change. What you must do (and you could just bribe him first without attacking, the smart way to do it) is go to Wang Ping and give him the money, then when you go to Han Zhong you will be snuck in by Yang Song, only for Zhang Lu to find out and slay Yang Song. Now this battle is much easier despite a solid army on the other side. Zhang Lu is a good character (although again no match for YOUR Zhang Lu, which coincidentally you can use as your top character in a matchup between two Zhang Lu-led armies) and the three generals he has below him all have around 180 attack power with 100 agility. Nothing you can’t deal with and this battle again is very easy once you find the gimmick to get inside. There isn’t much to do inside besides talk to the people, so leave.

7. Han Zhong Generals

The Han Zhong area is basically after you beat Lu Bu and until you beat Zhang Lu at Han Zhong Castle. After this, it is onward towards Shu!

Xiahou Dun has been added since you can recruit him at Xin Ye. Read the Zheng Letter Guide if you want to know more about how exactly to recruit Xiahou Dun.

Cheng Yi – 3900 soldiers

Analysis: You will find him at Nanzheng citadel. He, however, provides the weakest support for his side, so worry about him last.

Analysis: He’ll be at Yangping Citadel with three other generals. I would venture to say he is the worst general of the group so deal with him last. Those Cheng’s, they are not too good.

Analysis: Well, you get him before you go to the Shu/Han Zhong area. A decent general who specializes in tactics, he is not really worth your time unless you missed somebody or something. Don’t get me wrong he’s better than Yi Ji and the recently re-acquired Chen Deng, but that doesn’t get him off the billetting.

Also, note that you can recruit Fa Zheng clones at Fu Shui Castle with the Zheng Letter. Later on at Fu Shui you can recruit better generals, like Zhao Yun clones and unfortunately Yang Huai too.

Hou Cheng – 4200 soldiers

Analysis: Well, he is a decent general. but his attack is lower than the other two fighters they have. I’d say they are all about equally difficult so take out Zhang Lu first and then use tactics like Luo Shi on Hou Cheng to cripple him. He is unrelated to the Hou Cheng later in the game at Bei Yuan Citadel.

Li Zhan – 4000 soldiers

Analysis: Well, you have to fight him within the forest initially. He is by himself and is easy, and then he has the audacity to allow himself (you cant say no) to join your army. Well, he can’t force you to put him in your party. You have a general like him. His name is Zhou Cang. Enough said. Oh, but he ends up tied for the highest in soldiers. What a feat, still wasn’t used by me at all.

Ma Chao – 9863 (high)

Analysis: He is a tough fight when you fight him, but once you defeat him and his cousin you will be thankful that he joins you. Chances are, you will use him for the rest of the game. The strength is beastly, the agility is relatively high and the intelligence doesn’t drag him down, along with high soldiers.

Ma Dai – 9878 (second-highest)

Str. 230 – Int. 170 – Agi. 135

Analysis: Probably one of the more underrated generals. Or rather, a Shu general who probably shouldn’t have stats as high as he does but you should take advantage of it. All you math majors can probably tell that he only trails Ma Chao in total points by 20, as the difference in agility is quite significant. However his tactical ability may make up for it and certainly his strength isn’t that much lower than Chao’s. That said when the time comes you may want to choose Chao over Dai as his soldier level is lower than Chao’s, but you should be using Ma Dai well into the ending of the game and maybe will want to take him out for Jiang Wei. His soldiers aren’t that high but at the end he catches up and ends with the second-highest.

Meng Da – 9468 (low)

Analysis: A personal favorite, I generally use Meng Da for at least a while. He is useful throughout Han Zhong with his really high agility and overall versatility in other areas. I recommend using him as his agility is a great help although it is understandable if you go with a more proven general (such as Huang Zhong).

Pang De – 4100 soldiers

Analysis: Pang De is a tough fighter, but not as intelligent as he was in the first DoaE. Also of note, you fight him twice and the second battle is one of the later Wei battles so he’ll end up being an important general facing you then. As for the battle here, at Nanzheng with Yang Bai, it is advised to take out Pang De first with either Li Jian or Luo Shi. He is by far the most powerful general in this battle. In fact, Li Jian may be more useful for you as then Pang De’s strength is equal to your best generals, so it’s like having 6 of your members against their 4.

Pang Tong – soldiers vary (lower generally)

Str. 150 – Int. 245 – Agi. 125

Weapon – Sword

Rank – 8 / 34 ( 3/ 34 if recruited later with Zheng Letter)

Analysis: It is unfortunate you only have him for so long. Pang Tong is a beast that isn’t slowed strength-wise unlike other tacticians. Always have him fight (I believe you are forced into a 5-person party when you get him anyway).

UPDATE: Pang Tong can be recruited after his death with the Zheng Letter, at An Ding Castle in Wei. He cannot be put in the billeting because it says the same thing it did earlier with Pang Tong when you had him (something to the effect of him having an ‘important’ mission). Not that you would want to get rid of him anyway, as his soldiers increase with your level. Give Pang Tong the Treatise and he will have 255 Int. to go with higher agility and much higher strength Pang Tong is a top 3 character when recruited with the Zheng Letter.

Analysis: Yan Pu is the strategist of Zhang Lu’s army but hardly one that should threaten you at this juncture in the game. Being their best tactician you will want to take him out after Zhang Lu, but he should not prove too difficult save for a Ji Mian or two.

Analysis: Yang Ang is at Yangping, right after getting the Ma’s. He is a decent general and his cohorts have very similar statistics outside of the tactician Yang Ren. I’d throw a tactic his way to cripple him and focus on getting Yang Ren out of there.

Yang Bai – 4400 soldiers

Analysis: Yang Bai is at Nan Zheng, although he is not the most dangerous general here (that would be Pang De). He can take off a bit though so do Luo Shi or Li Jian him and that should neutralize him as you worry about Pang De.

Yang Ping – 4300 soldiers

Analysis: He is right on par with the other Yangping citadel generals, although he is probably the toughest warrior. That said Yang Ren can use tactics so you may want to kill him first, but Luo Shi Yang Ping to make sure he does little to no damage on your party.

Analysis: A decent warrior at Han Zhong castle, he is nearly identical to his relative (brother maybe?) Zhang Wei. His agility boost is probably more dangerous than Zhang Wei’s intelligence boost, so treat him as a more difficult opponent. Even then though, he should be priority number 3 (after Zhang Lu and Yan Pu).

Analysis: Zhang Lu, the glitch DoaE2 never wanted. However, if you do manage to recruit him (at Xin Ye as the Zhang Song Shu hoopla is going on), you will be forever blessed. Whether or not your party is at a high level, Zhang Lu will have 5100 soldiers. That is enough to make his attacks more devastating than anyone else right now, including Zhang Fei, at least for the immediate future. Even later in the game he is a valuable asset and should probably be in your party at the very end, or at least be one of the last characters you option out of your party.

When you fight him at Han Zhong, he can be a difficult battle (especially if you didn’t recruit him eearlier). However his balance can’t match your generals, so take him out and stay healed while his other friends wail on you.

Zhang Wei – 4200 soldiers

Str. 180 – Int. 80 – Agi. 110 – A.P. 130 – A.C. 120

Weapon – Spear

Land: Mtn

Analysis: Zhang Wei is with Zhang Lu and is a decent fighter. As stated above, his stats are nearly identical to Zhang Heng, so use tactics on both of them to put them in a position to do nothing while you take out the more important members of Zhang Lu’s army, such as himself and Yan Pu.

When you do, Yang Huai comes to see you and praises you for your efforts in taking down Zhang Lu. Then he suggests (or rather insists as you cannot say no) that you attack Fu Shui castle. You have to agree so just do it and then go there and see what happens. Strangely enough it will be Yang Huai there waiting for you, saying he tricked you and that Liu Zhang is away in Cheng Du. He brings Wu Lan and Gao Pei with, and while Wu Lan and Yang Huai (Gao Pei is a class b jobber) are decent fighters they can get Da Re-ed until the end of time. Do so and get the vibe in Fu Shui castle. Also get Wu Lan, who is waiting out front. Now don’t use him of course. Surely he is better than Chen Deng and Zhou Cang, but that’s about it. You will hear topics regarding a water gate and a key for it that Pang Yi had (who consequently was banished by your enemy Liu Zhang).

Head to the northern village and have a talk with Pang Yi who will give you the Bronze Key if you agree to help him. Grab the key and head north. The watergate battle is so easy I cannot fathom that anyone would die here with a decent army and a decent brain. Ling Bao (LENG BAO) comes with Deng Xian and Zhang Su. Deng Xian is a tactician specialist with an intelligence of 135 and that pretty much sums up your competition here. Take them out and use the key on the gate and then check it and say yes to turn it.

Continue your journey west now as you have somewhere to go finally. Without going to far however, disaster strikes. Liu Zhang’s army (specifically Zhang Ren) falls upon them, and without too much fighting Pang Tong gets struck down by an arrow. How unfortunate, Zhang Fei laments and retreats back to Fu Shui, only to be late as Zhang Ren is there with 3 new generals!

Obviously your party is in some trouble. Fear not as Zhuge Liang comes with reinforcements, and fire also. Zhang Ren and his army is driven away and you are in Fu Shui, where Jing Zhou is reported as safe and Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, and Zhuge Liang all join you. Now you may want Zhuge in your party and with these three (who ALL should be in the active party) you will have to take some characters out. Really it is a tough call and you can go either way. Ma Dai and Wei Yan are two that are tricky. Ma Dai is arguably a better general than Ma Chao (statistically they are near equal overall but I’d rather have Da’s 170 intelligence and 120 agility than Ma Chao’s 130 intelligence and 175 agility). Zhang Fei would be considered dump-worthy, maybe, but you can’t get rid of him anyway so keep him in the active lineup. Zhao Yun is the best character in the game so he must be in there, Guan Yu too. Now you have some tactical firepower so maybe you can sit Zhuge Liang and not have him in battles, instead keeping another general (Ma Dai/Chao) that might have been chopped otherwise. And oh, if you have Zhang Lu through all this, he’s better than all the aforementioned characters at this point probably, so that’ll mess your roster up even more.

Check it out, you have a huge army with several capable generals, make your choices based on your preferences in battle (ie are you tactical based or more defensive/strength based)? Personally my party is Ma Chao, Zhang Fei, Guan Yu, Zhao Yun with Zhuge Liang as tactician.

Outside of Fu Shui, get on the boat and you will sail towards Ba castle. Now, you can also go to the bottom left and go to a gate, but go straight to Ba castle now to take on Liu Jun. Interestingly enough he has a general similar in age to Huang Zhong in Yan Yan, who is also the most dangerous general in this battle. Still nothing to make you sweat, but after the battle he will join you if you wish. Not worth adding but a solid character to have on your side. The weapon store has some nice new items (like the Flame Armor and the Ice Spears). After all of this you will hear of Ba citadel and the wood that is there.

Obviously, something is to be done there, so rest up and go! With your new ice spears (assuming you have a party simliar to mine) you should be able to destroy these folks. But Liu Ba retreats. When you go in the citadel later, he will set it on fire as you leave. Now if you waited, a soldier will rush in and ask you your thoughts, so say you fight for justice and he’ll tell you the citadel is supposed to burn down. Obviously, leave it, and Liu Ba is no match for you without his gimmick (or with it for that matter). One last comment about this region; you can ignore Ba Castle and go straight for the Ba Citadel if you’d like, but you’ll miss out on everything above if you do.

Heading south you will see you have some options. Go to the village first to hear them, as you can either seize the food from north mountain or attack Jian Ning straight on. Arrow barrages will block you if you attempt to attack the castle. Now I must say, as I was using the speedup function on the emulator, I was able to override the “Arrow barrage” message and get to Lei Tong. Obviously this isn’t what you should do, so just go to the mountain.

When you enter head straight north for 592 gold pieces. Then head left for a Silver Potion. Head to the upper left area and go down the stairs for a Powerpil and head up on the plateau for a Flame Armor. Heading east and then south a little is another gold piece chest worth 600 or so. Also to the very lower left (only accessible when taking an immediate left when entering the mountain area) is a Flame Shield, probably the best item here. The final item in the upper right is a Silver Potion, and leave via the north exit once you are done. The gate up north houses Wang Kang and the feeble Lu Kai. Rout them and go in, as they vow to get you back. Whatever, go on and rest and then attack Jian Ning. It’s the same two generals from the last battle, with Lei Tong and Deng Xian. Lei Tong is good but again the theory stays the same; all these castles send out one good general and that’s all, so gang up on them and rout the rest. Recruit Lei Tong and hear about Jiang Wan, and then leave north.

Jiang Wan’s house is up there, but he can’t help. Go to the cave to the west first. Take the northwestern path for 600 gold coins or so. Finally take the lower left staircase to advance. Now take the lower path and go a long way for a Powerpil. Then return and take a right at your next fork to get a Silver Potion. Take the staircase to the left and then take a right for an Ice Spear, and left to leave the cave. Inside the house, Gao Pei will be waiting there. You fought him in the Yang Huai battle at Fu Shui a while back, and he is no harder than he was back then. Destroy him and return Jiang Wan’s mom to his side and he will join. Again he isn’t worth putting in your party but you advanced the story. But do what he says and put him in the front line, as you can’t beat the next castle without doing so. He will then enter the castle, lying about whose troops you are. Fortunately you can then fight them on more favorable conditions and despite them having Wu Yi, another recruitable general, this batch isn’t not very tough either.

Now head north, but you can’t attack that gate right away. So go in the cave like you were told to do, and head to the right and then all the way up for a Steel Helmet and 232 gold, now work your way down. The bottom left is 197 gold pieces. Enter the staircase and go all the way down for another Steel Helmet. To the right at the four way is another fork, which has a Fire Scroll to the south and a Qing Long Saber to the north. The top left area is a Silver Potion and the left area at the four way is the TNT! Now head up and go up at the beginning of the cave to meet Zi Xu, who tells you to use it on the wood stack in the western gate! So go north and you’ll enter the back way of the gate. Don’t talk to the soldiers, or you can, you’ll just get in a fight with rebel forces over and over and over (great way to level up). Anyway when you are ready use the TNT on the wood stack. A Zhang Ren battle will ensue but the flames will easily devour him in a matter of rounds. Zhuge orders you to follow him to Long You!

When you get there, Zhang Ren is ready and you have no fire gimmick. However, your party is still stronger than his, so overwhelm him with your fire spells and his party should be gone. Rest or do whatever, and continue on and Zhang Ren will be waiting at a bridge before Cheng Du. Your lead general will duel him, and chances are you’ll win. If not, build up your level or get some new equipment. If you have Zhang Lu I wouldn’t worry.

The battle to decide Shu awaits to the south! Cheng Du, obviously, is guarded by Liu Zheng, who fortunately is a joke of a general. His associates are not much of a help either. Liu Xun is a decent fighter but is easily taken out with a Huo Shen. The other four are decent tacticians at best so keep your hit points up and make sure they don’t Li Jian your characters. Really, it’s an easy battle though.

The pretender is now out of Shu! Inside, the weapon store has some nice new items again, so buy them. Rest, and Liu Bei will then send you off to Han Zhong as Cao Cao has retaken it. On you go, but at least this time Liu Bei has a land of his own!

8. Shu Generals

Shu is considered the area after defeating Zhang Lu and culminates in the defeat of Liu Bei’s relative, Liu Zhang.

Deng Xian – 4000 soldiers

Analysis: You fight Deng Xian on two separate occasions; at Jianning castle and before that, at the water gate. The battle at the water gate is easy as he is the best tactician in the battle and that’s obviously not saying much. The Jianning battle might test you a little, if only for there being four generals and Lei Tong being one of them.

Dong He – 4700 soldiers

Analysis: Dong He is at Ba castle and really shouldn’t be an issue for you. An average magician. Also you fight him after getting Jiang Wan at Yinping. Yan Yan is the primary general in the Ba castle battle so take him out and you can probably all-out from there with Huo Jun and Dong He being feeble and not that dangerous tactically anyway. The other battle pits you against four generals, most notably Wu Yi, but Wu Yi is probably the worst recruitable general in this area so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Fei Guan – 5600 soldiers

Analysis: He shows up at the Ba citadel battle with Liu Ba. After the shenanigans, you’re either dealing with an easy battle or one that is a little harder due to the fire. Fei Guan himself does not provide much resistance. Ignore this mediocre general for the others and all-out him eventually.

Fei Shi – 5700 soldiers

Analysis: Gao Pei is not a tough general and you fight him twice. The first time is at Fu Shui with Yang Huai, but that really isn’t too hard and he is the least dangerous of the lot. Later, you fight him at Jiang Wan’s house and he is alone, so all-out him and get some water while you’re waiting for him to die.

Huang Quan – 6400 soldiers

Analysis: Huang Quan opposes you with Liu Zhang at Cheng Du. He is an average tactician but again, nothing that should scare you as most of your good FIGHTERS have an equal or close amount of intelligence.

Anyway, Huang Quan certainly isn’t a priority but he may annoy you with Ji Mian. Oh, he also surprises you with Zhang Ren at Fu Shui, but is blown away and sent back to Cheng Du.

Huo Jun – 6700 soldiers

Analysis: Well, I don’t remember reading too much about him in the novel but he must have did something wrong to get such poor stats. His 18 agility makes him worthless, just a meager general who will act as not much more than a rebel force. He is at Ba castle by the way, and just all-out him. Pathetic.

Jiang Wan – 9470 (low)

Analysis: I don’t know why he joins your party. He is pointless other than to march into Yinping castle and get the jump on them (notice how a guard by the name of Zheng Xu (I think, someone weird) lets you in and is no where to be heard from after that, as Li Yan comes out). After that just please get him out of your party with that ugly agility.

Lei Tong – 5400 soldiers (average soldiers when he joins)

Analysis: So he is a pretty tough general at Jianning, but nothing that you haven’t handled before. His strength is good but his other two statistics aren’t, so cripple him before he can even go and then the battle is essentially over with the weak supporting cast (recurring theme in the Shu area; one good general and 3 goombas). When he joins inside I wouldn’t use him as he certainly isn’t that “good”. However try going through Shu with all the recruited generals, it is more of a challenge and vindicating for the traitors as well.

Li Yan – 5800 soldiers

Analysis: Liu Kui has a unique avatar I just realized. I will make note of this in my archives and will factor this into the next avatar tournament. Now, in battle Liu Kui is not unique but rather is a very standard poor general in the Shu area. You fight him on a few occasions, most notably at Cheng Du, and he shouldn’t be regarded as an issue in any of the fights.

Liu Xun – 5900 soldiers

Str. 140 – Int. 105 – Agi. 100 – A.P. 150 – A.C. 140

Analysis: Liu Xun is another popular general in the Shu area and you will fight him often, and again climaxing at the Cheng Du battle. He is a solid general and little else, but sadly his overall stats make him one of the better non-recruitable generals in the area. And that really is sad.

Liu Zhang – 6500 soldiers

Analysis: The worst “boss” general in the game. Sure, his A.P. and A.C. are high for the area, but 115 strength is just too pathetic. His intelligence can be a nuisance but again, we’ve gone over that 160 intelligence is about equal to Ma Dai and your other fighters. Add up the fact that the generals he has with him aren’t anything to worry about (besides Liu Ba), and you have the easiest chapter-ending battle in the game.

Lu Kai – 4800 soldiers

Analysis: Lu Kai appears a few times around the Jianning area, once at the supply area east of Jian Ning and later at Jian Ning castle. Obviously, he has nothing physically, but his intelligence is one of the highest in the area, making him an underrated general.

Wang Kang – 4900 soldiers

Analysis: You fight Wang Kang in the same battles as Lu Kai, in both the Jianning castle battle and the provision-capturing battle before heading to Jianning. Wang Kang isn’t really good at any one thing so I wouldn’t consider him a priority especially with an able tactician (Lu Kai) and a playable character (Lei Tong) in his army.

Wang Lei – 5800 soldiers

They are all in the mid-100’s so it’s nothing you should worry about, just watch the Ji Mian and Yin Xian and you should be ok.

Analysis: He joins after the Fu Shui battle, which isn’t too hard. Consequently, he is the best general at that castle, so use tactics on him and he should go down easily. You probably have better generals in billeting, so you know what to do with him. He is decent though. Oh well.

He is nothing more than an annoyance with his tactics and again, you surely have much better generals in your billeting so when he joins there shouldn’t be a reason to use him unless you are experimenting, or unless you covet his soldier count (although he doesn’t get the second slot until MUCH later in the game.)

Analysis: Yan Yan is at Ba castle and he is a much better general than the previous three listed. Unfortunately he is still worse than Huang Zhong or Ma Dai and surely some other borderline generals, but he gives you a much better option if you’re willing and/or somehow low on characters. Luckily, at Ba castle his surrounding generals provide nothing so focus solely on Yan ^ 2. By the way, Yan Yan and Huang Zhong have the two lowest (tied) soldier counts of the active generals at level 99. Is it because they’re old, or something?

Yang Huai – 5200 soldiers

Now Yang Huai is very much like Wu Lan but a tad weaker, so use higher level tactics on the two of them and victory and Fu Shui will be yours shortly.

Analysis: Zhang Ren is surely the most honorable general of the Shu area, as he constantly hounds you and never gives in like the other good Shu generals. He is the one who surprises Pang Tong and kills him. Later, you fight him at Mian Zhu Guan, Longyou castle, and then in a solo battle. He is a solid general with intelligence and agility to match your good fighters, but his attack just isn’t in their 230-250 range. In the solo battle he fights whoever you have in the first spot. If it is Zhang Lu, watch and snicker as the lord of Han Zhong destroys Zhang Ren. If you are not using Zhang Lu, put in Ma Chao or Zhao Yun or someone of that nature and you should win.

Analysis: Zhang Su is at Yinping with Dong He and Wu Yi. He is similar to Dong He in his tactical ability so you may want to take him out just because of that. Either way no one in this battle is too dangerous so all out once Wu Yi is dead, I’d say.
