Prologue

Before you start the game with Ragnar, you are introduced to the hero of your journey. Either a male or female, you choose. The prologue lasts about 15 minutes, does not explain to much but it is clear said hero has quite the potential. Search around the village for some small items but they are really of no significance. Seed of Strength, Medicinal Herb, 3 Gold, Antidotal Herb, Medicinal Herb, . Look for Eliza your friend, who was the transformed frog. Return to your home to eat to end the Prologue and save.

Note that when you play Dragon Warrior IV on the NES the game just goes straight to Ragnar’s chapter instead of having this prologue.

Chapter 1 : Ragnar McRyan and the Case of the Missing Children

You start off in Burland, as Ragnar McRyan, a soldier under King Burnard’s army. It is now where you notice the interesting dialects this game offers – it seems Burland is the home of the Scottish! Try your best to figure out what is going on – basically, the kids in nearby Straithbaile have been abducted by some evil force and you must find them.

When you gain control, check the southeast part for a Medicinal Herb. In the town area is 3 gold, 5 gold, and a Seed of Strength in the southwest house. Talk to Aigneas outside of this house as she tells you about Angus.

Cave to Straithbaile

West of Burland is a cave to Straithbaile. Might want to level up a few times before entering, but it is not long. Chest the east chest for Medicinal Herb, then northwest for 40 Gold. Take the north stairs to head out, then look northeast for Straithbaile.

Straithbaile

Used to be Izmit in Dragon Warrior IV Chapter 1 , but we now have Straithbaile. The kids are missing here so ask around. 3 Gold lies to the left, 25 Gold in the northwest wall on the ground, Plain Clothes in the Inn, then check the school for a Medicinal Herb. One more Medicinal Herb behind the church, and a set of stairs going down here. This is the jail, where Agnus is. Another Medicinal Herb here and then after you talk with Agnus, you will want to return to Burland to get his lady Aigneas.

You get a hint about something southeast of town, probably in the foresty-area. Grab a Hardwood Headwear before you go. Sure enough, you find some ruins with a well.

Well ruins southeast of Straithbaile

Take the northwest stairs first for Seed of Life, 15 Gold, Medicinal Herb, and Seed of Agility. You will hear a voice by the well so go down it. Watch out for the enemies inside. The Mad Moles can build up their strength for a big attack and a Winkster can use magic to harm you bad.

On this first floor, head to the southwest corner, then go straight east through this next path to a Medicinal Herb. Take the southmost path for the stairs.

In this new area, head all the way east until you reach a healslime. His name is Healie and he likes to <slurp>. You have your first ally, and one that is useful to pair with Ragnar. Back to the intersection on this floor, and head all the way north to another T. This time go east for 580 Gold, then west for a Pair of Talaria. Evidently the kids must have found a pair of these and flew off.

Leave this cave from the beginning (on the first floor, go to the northwest area to fall down and leave). With the 580 gold and the enemies you fought, you should have a good chunk of change. If you can purchase the Iron Armour that would be best, or the Iron Shield. Don’t buy a weapon if you can help it, you will find something soon that will blow any of those weapons away. Use the Talaria after you have rested.

Talaria Tower

The Talaria will bring you to that tower blocked off by water. The kids are here as you can see, an eyeball enemy is taking them away. Follow them down the stairs.

Take the north path for Chimaera Wing. Head south for a soldier who evidently passed up on Healie for some reason. Ignore him and take the stairs to the east. Head north and take the big doors you find to the west for 640 Gold. Back out and north for stairs up and a Seed of Strength. Back down and now take the southern door of that center area for Scale Shield. Go north for the stairs down.

Immediately head south to rest up HP / MP for your party. You can continue to use this for a free heal up as you build up and explore here. Burst through the north door for Cautery Sword, which is terrific weapon for this point in the game. If you still had the Copper Sword, you will be amazed at the damage difference. The enemies in this tower are a big upgrade from what you have fought before, but with the Cautery Sword you should have no issues mowing them down. Anyway, east of the Cautery Sword chest is the Resilience Seed.

It is now probably a good idea to rest up, and go south out of the tower. Use the Talaria, then go south again to jump off the tower. You are now on the other side of the river, so go to Straithbaile. With the 640 gold you got in the tower and everything else you have accumulated, buy Ragnar his best defensive equipment (Iron Shield, Iron Armour, Hardwood Headwear). Ragnar is suddenly very formidable.

Back to the tower by using the Talaria shoes. Be sure to rest at the heal-up spot, then go southeast to talk to a guy about the future of the world. Take the stairs and you will find the kids and that eyeball enemy. It seems like you have a strong evil presence here with Psaro’s Pawn. He has that Winky enemy with him as well. Take out that Winky right away – after one hit from Ragnar, it’s complexion will change to red. It now will either critical attack you or miss. Psaro’s Pawn will take a lot of hits, upwards of 200 hit points. 108 EXP is your reward.

Psaro’s Pawn then mumbles about the hero being destroyed before he grows. That is why the enemies are after children. You will need to take the kids out and use the Talaria, then jump off the tower. To Straithbaile you go, to drop them off. Then Burland to a hero’s welcome.

Ragnar tells the king he needs to go on a journey to protect the young hero. “Och, if that’s whit ye want, then who am I tae stop ye!? Here’s a wee gaein’ away pressie for ye, then!” The king gives you a ton of EXP, likely to boost Ragnar up to level 13-15. Ragnar and the healslime Healie then head off, concluding Ragnar’s quest, Chapter 1. Save your game and Alena’s chapter is up next.

Zamoksva Castle

Tsarevna Alena is a tomboy that intends on leaving her hometown on an adventure, to explore the world. Her father Tsar Stepan and companions Kiryl and Borya do not want her to leave.Go down the stairs after talking to everyone on the king’s floor, then west for a Medicinal Herb. Talk to Kiryl in the east part, then search a dresser for a Phial of Holy Water. Talk to the guards, and go back to your chamber (take the stairs up by the king). Search Alena’s dresser for a Feathered Cap and Medicinal Herb. The Feathered Cap in particular is a boon for Alena’s defense. Now search those planks and have Alena kick them. As you flee the castle of Zamoksva, Borya and Kiryl will come chasing after you.

You now have a party of three; a fine yet raw figher in Alena, a healer in Kiryl, and a powerful wizard in Borya. Ragnar did not require much strategy being the only playable character in his chapter, and his chapter is very short compared to Alena’s.

Zalenagrad Town

Enter Zalenagrad Town and go to the weapon shop in the northwest for a Seed of Agility. Not much else to do here with your lack of funds so build up a few levels for your characters. Buy a few Divine Daggers for Alena and Kiryl. Too bad they are not Thorn Whips like in Dragon Warrior IV Alena’s Chapter , they were much cooler.

Taborov

Next town to the northeast is a cursed town, Taborov. The females are used as sacrifices here. Check the well here for a Mini Medal – they do not show up in your normal inventory but you will learn more about them later. Also check the chief’s house to hear more about the situation and tell him you’ll destroy the monsters. Don’t go there quite yet though.

An Antidotal Herb and Leather Hat are in his house. Then look around the rest of the village for a Seed of Agility and Seed of Life. You will want to build up to level 4 or 5 before you go on and challenge the monsters in Taborov at the north end of town. Speak with the shaman at the church to go on with it.

The shaman will ask twice. Then, enter the sacrificial box. Sure enough, enemies come out. Two Foo Dogs and a Master Kung. As usual you will probably want to kill off the dogs on the side one at a time, with Alena’s attacks and Brey’s Crack. Once you get the Master Kung by himself, use Sap on him to lower his defense immensely. Master Kung can use attack magic but he will likely try to damage control by healing himself, so just hammer away. He does not have much health, and you will gain 150 EXP and a Seed of Life.

You then spend the night and a new day begins in Taborov. Check out the item shop for some useful weapons, though the only one not at Zalenagrad is the Hunter’s Bow.

Vrenor Town

Head through the back of Taborov. Then as you get out, go northeast to find Vrenor Town. Check the church in the southwest of the village to save (and search the garden here for Seed of Life). In the north house as you enter there is an Antidotal Herb, and 10 Gold in the Elf’s house in the northwest. Talk to him about the Armlet of Transmutation. This is a key item and it is at the Vault of Vrenor south of town.

At the Inn, a couple of shady guys kidnap “Princess Tsarevna“. But it must be a fake princess since obviously Alena is the real princess. Grab the Plain Clothes in this room, then follow those thieves out of town.

Vault of Vrenor

South of the town of Vrenor is a cave leading to Vrenor’s Vault. Take the south route upon entering for a Chimaera Wing. Take the west path now until you see a pedestal to the south, with a Seed of Agility. From here you can go straight north for 360 Gold Coins. Take the southwest path now as it wraps around to the north, all the way to the stairs down.

Take the southeast path here, but go west when you can for a Phial of Magic Water. Finally, go south to find the mysterious Armlet of Transmutation. Exit the Vault of Vrenor either with Evac or walk out.

Back at Vrenor, talk to the kid in the southeast part of the village (during the day). He mentions a letter about bringing the Armlet to the graveyard at night. So, wait for nightfall and enter Vrenor. The two guys who abducted the ‘princess’ are here, with said princess. The enemies now have the Armlet of Transmutation, who knows what will happen with that. But the fake princess confesses, she is just Anya a travelling entertainer. However she does leave you with the Thief’s Key, a very important item like any key you come across in this game.

A new day begins in Vrenor. You hear a lot about the southern Bazaar, you may or may not have already ventured down there. Also check out the new shop in the east part of town. I wouldn’t worry about the Iron Lance but the Chain Sickle may be worth buying for Alena, though it is not that much better than the Divine Dagger for example.

Desert Bazaar

This Bazaar is southwest of the Vrenor Vault. Tough enemies lie in this area so make sure you stay healed up as you encounter battles. The Bazaar has plenty of weapons and armor that are worth checking out, namely the Holy Lance for Kiryl and the Poison Moth Knife for Borya. Both weapons are the best you will find for these two in this chapter, and the Moth Knife can paralyze enemies, essentially rendering them useless the rest of the battle. Not much at the Armor shop compared to the weapon shop, but the Scale Shield is probably the best you will find for Borya. Ignore the Bronze Armour, it is expensive and you can find something even better for Kiryl coming up.

In the south part of the Bazaar are a bunch of pots. Check them out for a Seed of Strength, a Medicinal Herb, and a Piece of Horse Manure. The north building has a Seed of Agility. Speak to the soldier in the center part of town, toward the west end. He says the king has fallen ill, so return to Zamoksva.

Castle Zamoksva

Sure enough, your father cannot speak. He is fine but he cannot seem to talk. Speak to the Chancellor who says you should talk to Old Starek in the back of town. First go upstairs and into the king’s room with the Thief’s Key to grab 30 Gold. Then jump out of your room window and go to the back of the castle, and now that you have the Thief’s Key you can enter the old man’s house. He mentions Josef Starling the poet in the nearby village. Get the Chimaera Wing and Seed of Magic in his house, then exit the castle.

Zalenagrad

The nearby village of Zalenagrad is where you find that poet. He is above the church on the deck. Josef Starling says that he used Birdsong Nectar from the Desert Bazaar. Hm, use a Chimaera Wing back there to talk to people at the Bazaar. Talk to the item shop owner at the Bazaar, and she mentions the Elf Tower to the southwest. The elves would have some Birdsong Nectar.

Birdsong Elf Tower

This tower is quite a walk southwest, near the coast. Straight north as you enter and down the stairs, there is an Inn here! Makes this place great for levelling up, but the enemies are tough here namely the Flying Doctors. But since you have the Thief’s Key, take the northwest door and the stairs up.

As you get out on 2F, head west and south for a set up stairs up. Grab the 1200 Gold Coins and Seed of Strength, then return to the 2F stairs. You are to work your way to the far southeast corner to get the stairs to 3F.

Take the north route right away for a Chimaera Wing, then go west but be sure not to fall in the pitfall area. Up the stairs, then up another set of stairs and you are at the top. Two female elves are here and one of them drops the Birdsong Nectar. Daisy and Oopsy flee so grab the Nectar and just use a Chimaera Wing to fly to Zamoksva.

Zamoksva

After administering the Birdsong Nectar to the King (choose item – use), he will wake up and tell of a dream he had. An evil monster from the underworld appeared in his dreams to scour the land. He continued to have the dream, told the chancellor about it, then immediately lost his voice.

Endor

Back to the Desert Bazaar, and go east from here. A small shrine is nearby. If you went here before, the guard stopped you from continuing. Now you can take the teleport to the south shrine, which puts you near Endor. Directly southeast and you will be in Endor. Tough enemies are outside here though, like Cyclowns, Skeleton Swordsmen, and Restless Armours. Another interesting creature here is the Metal Slime, which is hard to hit (you can only do 1 damage) and runs away often, but if you kill one you will gain a boatload of experience points.

In Endor, just go straight north a few screens until you reach the king in the castle. He wants you to win the Endor Tourney, because the winner can marry his daughter. But of course he does not want anyone to marry her so he wants Princess Alena to win.

Go down these stairs, then take the stairs going down just north of there. Open the boxes for 3 Gold and a Phial of Holy Water. Then leave the castle area of Endor.

Take one of the side doors to the west or east, then head north until you reach the arena (you will know by the music change). Sell your Chain Sickle or whatever at the item shop, so you can pick up the Iron Claw. This is Alena’s second best weapon. Take the north exit to leave Endor, but re-enter the town.

As you enter Endor Town, go west for 5 Gold, then enter the southwest building to find a Silk Robe that you should then sell. By the weapon shop is an Antidotal Herb. Enter the big house in the east part of town. 40 Gold coins on the first floor and then go to the Inn for a Seed of Resilience and 16 Gold.

Downstairs is the Casino. You have the slots, Battle Arena and Poker. Poker is probably the best way to make coins, since you can do the double-or-nothing bet. Make sure to save before you go here so you do not burn too many gold coins (you can always just reset if it goes bad). It is not as easy to manipulate the poker game but if you get a bunch of double or nothings you can maybe buy a Liquid Metal Shield, which is the best shield in the game and can only be equipped by Magicians. It makes a HUGE difference the rest of the game for someone like Borya.

Not much to do in Endor now besides the tourney. However even with the Iron Claw it is difficult so you may wish to level Alena up to level 13 or 14. Metal Slimes help greatly with this, you only need to kill one or two. This will also help in outfitting the rest of the party, as Kiryl could use Iron Armour and Iron Shield. When Borya learns Crackle, this will mow down enemies especially Armoured Scorpions.

Endor Tourney

Walking up the stairs in the tournament area (with the Inn, Item Shop, etc) will begin the tourney. Load Alena up with Medicinal Herbs, and she must have the Iron Claw. The Feathered Cap and Chain Mail are your best defensive bets. You need to defeat 5 battles just as Psaro the Manslayer has.

Attila the Hunk is the first battle. Not a difficult fight here at all, he should take 3 hits at most and less if critical hit. Quick Draw McGore is fight number two, and he shoots you with his bow. His attack is a little stronger and he may take one more hit than Attila, but should still not prove a problem for you. He drops a Medicinal Herb when defeated.

Prima Donna is the next fight. She likes to defend, and cast some spells like Crack, Sizz, or Midheal. Her attacks are weak but she will likely prolong the battle with Midheal. Eventually though she runs out of MP so you should be able to outlast her, and often times you can gain a critical to put her away early on. She too drops a Medicinal Herb. Samson Knight is the next battle and he’s a tough one. His attacks take off about as much as yours (16-18). And he also drops a Medicinal Herb after a grueling battle.

The final battle is against the Abominable Showman. This snowman fights with three doppelgangers of himself, so you need to guess which one it is. You only need to hit him a couple of times, and more often than not you’ll get lucky and guess the right one eventually. Though that was only the case the first time I played – the next time I chose Showman C about 8 times straight and was wrong. But that’s why you bring the herbs, incase you get unlucky.

After this, Psaro the Manslayer is no where to be found for the final fight. King Norman of Endor anoints Alena the winner of this contest. As you begin to leave Endor, a soldier from Zamoksva tells you to return and then disappears. As you Zoom back to Zamoksva, it is empty. Go to your room, jump off onto the balcony and then leave. Alena’s chapter ends, Torneko’s begins.

Chapter 3 : Torneko and the Extravagant Excavation

Lakanaba

Torneko Taloon wishes to be the greatest arms merchant in the world. He has a wife and son in the small village of Lakanaba and works at a nearby weapon shop. As you wake up, Tessie gives you a Lunch, as she does every day.Search your house for a Leather Hat. Outside your house is a Medicinal Herb and the Item Shop has an Antidotal Herb nearby. Go to the weapon shop to begin your day selling stuff. This tends to bore me after not too long but if you are patient you can earn some good money here, not to mention some people will sell back very useful weapons sometimes even a Cautery Sword. That’s only when you are very lucky, usually it is a Chain Sickle.

Before you leave Lakanaba, get the Leather Shield at the top floor of the armor shop. You probably should not even buy a weapon at this point, just go to the cave north of Lakanaba with your new defensive equipment.

Cave North of Lakanaba

As you enter, go west for the stairs down, then follow the path until you reach a gold button holding the water back. Hit the button then take the north stairs. Don’t hit the next button you see though, grab the Chain Sickle just west of it. See, that’s why we didn’t buy a weapon. You have to hit the button to continue though.
Take the stairs down to the northwest, then go west in the next area to see a gigantic boulder. As you head south, it will follow you. Take the first path east that you see, then go south, west when you can, then north. The boulder falls into the hole and you can follow it for the stairs down.

Push one of the rocks to the west and north before you go grab the Steel Strongbox. This way you can push the rock onto the switch that the safe was on, so that the door opens back up. Then leave back to Lakanaba to rest up.

Foxville

Southeast of Lakanaba is a village inhabited by some weird people. Also a guy named Archie O’Tect is here, make note of this. Don’t buy from the item shop guy but steal his Pile of Horse Manure and Medicinal Herb. Take the Pair of Boxers from the chancellors house and rest up, but when you wake up the village is gone?

Ballymoral

The castle south of Foxville is Ballymoral. At the Inn there is another Leather Shield and the Armor Shop has a Seed of Life. Sell any spare armor you have in the southwest part of the castle for a ton of gold. Weapon Shop has 70 Gold, then be sure to buy a Chimaera Wing from the Item Shop.

The king of Ballymoral is wondering where Archie O’Tect is as he intends to take over Endor when the bridges are repaired. Go to the dungeon in the northeast part of the castle to meet Old Man Finn’s son, Finnegan. Hand over the Chimaera Wing, it will help you later. Then take to the Prince of Ballymoral, Prince Regan. He says to meet him outside the castle at night.

Head back to Lakanaba for a minute. Talk to Finnegan in the northeast and ask for Fido the dog. Take the dog to Foxville and he heads straight for the ‘chancellor’s house’. After some hassling from Fido, the chancellor turns into a fox and the town disappears. He offers a Suit of Full Plate Armor if he can retreat. Let him go, and Archie O Tect will be free too.

Back at Ballymoral, sell that Full Plate Armor for a ton of Gold. Talk to the King and the bridges will be repaired. Then come back here at night and look to the east for Prince Regan. He hands you the Prince’s Letter to give to the Princess of Endor.

Endor

Now you can venture to Endor, but some of the tougher enemies in Torneko Taloon’s Chapter are around here (not saying much though). Inside, you should buy an Astraea’s Abacus, Taloon’s best weapon.

Take the Prince’s Letter and read it to the princess in Endor. King Norman overhears and hands you the Royal Scroll. Take this back to Ballymoral and read it – the two have now formed an alliance, so go back to King Norman in Endor and he says that Torneko Taloon can open a shop now! You only need 35000 Gold to buy the shop in the southwest part of Endor from the old guy. Let’s find out about the Silver Goddess Statue.

Cave of Goddess Statuette

The bridge east of Endor is now open, so you can take that east and all the way north for a cave surrounded by poison. Take the raft east as you enter and fall down the hole.

Now you are walking on the ground level going east (look north for a Chimaera Wing). Take the southeast stairs to reach the B1 floor. Travel west and north here for a gold switch on the floor that reduces the water to the 2F floor instead of 1F.

Time to grab all the chests on 1F now that the water is gone. Go down the steps in the center, then head south for a Medicinal Herb. The center chest has 760 Gold. Northeast of here for an Antidotal Herb and Chimaera Wing. Raid the rest of the floor for Holy Lance and Iron Lance. Then take the far west stairs going down. The stairs up allow you to leave.

The stairs down though lead you to the B3 which you can now use the raft to get around on. An Iron Armour and Steel Broadsword await you down here, along with stairs in the north-center part that lead down. Take these for the Silver Goddess Statue.

Now make your way out of this cave and be thankful that there in no inventory limit like in Dragon Warrior IV! Even if you maxed Taloon’s inventory you can still put the rest of the stuff in your bag.

Any defensive equipment go to Ballymoral and sell for massive Gold. Then return to Endor to sell the Silver Goddess Statue to the rich guy in the east part of town (2nd floor). He pays a whopping 25000 Gold for it. We should be getting very close to 35000 Gold especially considering all of the inevitable item drops in Taloon’s journey.

Taloon’s Endor Shop

Now that you have a shop, your wife and kid come to live in Endor. You can buy any item, weapon or armor and sell that back at your shop for 150% the price that it normally is. Quite a deal! Not sure how people buy it, but people do; you just have to spend the night at the Inn or talk to your wife to stay the night. Not all of the inventory at your shop will sell, so it’s a good idea to get as much stuff as you can and then talk to your wife 3 or 4 times to rest for 3 or 4 nights straight to clear inventory and get as much Gold as possible.

Another method is to talk with the king who would like you to outfit his army. He requires a certain amount of weapons and armor and you will then have 60000 Gold if you just want to do it that way though I prefer just selling stuff at your shop to accumulate far more than 60000 Gold. With the extra money you can max out Torneko Taloon’s inventory with many Abaci of Virtue to sell later on in the game.

The idea is to gain 60000 Gold to be able to help the old guy to the east with his excavation project. After you hand him the money, leave the cave and return immediately to see the excavation has begun already. The old guy says he will send you a letter when it is finished, so return to Endor for now.

Speak with your wife. She says the Casino is finally open for the first time in Taloon’s chapter. Things are more expensive here this time around since Torneko Taloon can farm Gold at will. All you have to do is enter the Casino, you don’t have to gamble.

But enter and then head back to your shop – turns out your wife got the letter from the old man – the excavation project has been completed! Of course Taloon tells his wife he wants to travel through the tunnel in search of treasures and in general being the best Arms Merchant in all the land. So fill up your inventory with expensive weapons / armor, then head through the tunnel. Torneko Taloon’s Chapter comes to a close.

Chapter 4 : Meena and Maya and the Mahabala Mystery

Laissez Fayre

Maya is a dancer here and her sister Meena is a fortune teller. They are after Balzack the man who killed their father. Laissez Fayre is the capital of Libeccio and the girls are looking for Balzack as Maya dances. Manager Artois is Maya’s boss and he hands Maya 100 Gold for her work dancing. As you wake up, search the pots for a Medicinal Herb and then go west back into the stage area and then the manager’s room. Search for a Silk Robe (for Maya) and a Seed of Strength.

Back in town, search the southwest house for 5 Gold and a Leather Hat. The Inn has 20 Gold and a shaman guarding the exit to some female in the back. The place attached to the Inn has stairs up and a Wayfarer’s Clothes in the cabinet.

Before you leave town, sell that Dancer’s Costume. You fetch a good deal of money from it but hang onto said money (you should have close to 500 Gold). The next town has a weapon even nicer than the one’s here and you can afford it now too. Always sell this Dancer’s Costume, in Dragon Warrior IV Mara Nara’s Chapter as well.

If you come back to town at night, you can get by the Shaman in the Inn. Talk to the lady who says she has been summoned to the Palais de Leon but she heard that some mutated enemy (through alchemy) has executed a coup de grace. Check the bar before you leave for an Antidotal Herb.

Aubout du Monde
You might want to level up once or twice for your two ladies, but like I said just save your Gold until you reach Aubout du Monde, just north of Laissez Fayre. This is your hometown and you will hear a lot about your dad Mr Mahabala. Also you can stay at the Inn for free.

The center house has a Leather Shield for Meena and you will hear about an apprentice to your father, Oojam. Now go to the Item Shop, east part of town. Sell Meena’s Copper Sword and then buy a Chain Sickle for her. Suddenly she becomes a formidable attacker, similar to Kiryl in Alena’s Chapter.

In the northeast part of town is a dog named Puppadom that recognizes the girls. Talk to the old man to here Oojam is at a western cave. Inside the north building is a Seed of Magic and 35 Gold Coins. Finally, take the Seed of Life at your father’s grave in the back yard and leave town.

Fight around for a bit before you enter that cave west of the bridge. Try to get a Hunter’s Bow or Divine Dagger for Maya so that her attacks aren’t so putrid.

Sphere of Silence Cave

Take the west bridge and into the Cave. A Chimaera Wing is along the route, and then you will see a weird transport type device in the northeast. This takes you to B1.

Head west at the intersection for another teleport device going down to B2. Travel east and south until you reach a bridge in the middle of the watery area. The Night Light is here along with Oojam, an apprentice to your father! He too is looking for the Sphere of Silence to stop Balzack. It’s funny because Oojam is a complete goof in this game; as Orin in Dragon Warrior IV I always pictured him as a bad dude that pretty much slaughters any enemy in this chapter. In the DS version though I lost a little respect for him with the way he talks.

But I digress. Head to the transporter to B1, and this time go south and then west at the fork for 240 Gold Coins. Take the east route this time for a Seed of Life and another transporter to a different part of B2. This one takes a while but finally leads to the Sphere of Silence! You can now leave this cave.

Havre Leon

With Oojam in your party, traveling north of Aubout du Monde should be no problem. Venture past the castle and to the port town of Havre Leon. The best equipment in this chapter can be found here, notably a Fur Coat for Maya and a Half Plate Armor / Scale Shield for Meena. Also though a Holy Lance for Meena and a Poison Moth Knife for Maya.

Not much to find here in terms of treasure but a guy in a jail cell mentions using Gunpowder to scare the counselor, and that you can find Gunpowder at Mamon Mine. Might want to remember this.

Mamon Mine

West of Havre Leon is a shrine, where you will hear your prophesy. West of this is a village in despair, Mamon Mine. People are dying because of the monsters and gas coming from the mine here. Talk to the older guy in the west house about the Gunpowder and the Chancellor. He has a Medicinal Herb here too. Check the Inn for a Leather Hat. The northeast house is a lady who takes care of the folks around here, and a Phial of Holy Water in the cabinet.

Enter the mine when you are rested and ready. Tough monsters are down here. Just to the east is a dude who warns you and a Seed of Magic. North of here is a special weapon, a Deck of Silver Tarot Cards. Take the stairs east of here.

On this floor, head north but go west when you can. There is a Seed of Life by the grave and 50 Gold in the north part. Take the east stairs to see some miners and a Powder Keg. Cast Evac to get out of here.

Palais de Leon

This is the big castle a stones throw south of Havre Leon. With Oojam in your party, you can break the lock on these doors. Enter the east door and check out the Chancellor’s dresser for 200 Gold Coins.

Now use the Powder Keg outside of his room. The Chancellor will panic and head to the throne room which is a secret area by the north stone wall. Search the wall and enter.

The Marquis Regent Balzack is here. Rest up and talk to the king. Balzack talks bad about your dad Mahabala and proclaims that Balzack himself has perfected the Secret of Evolution. As this battle begins, use the Sphere of Silence and then Sap on him. He cannot cast spells and his defense is terrible now. Otherwise he will cast spells like Sizz. He can still cough up fireballs to attack everyone, and his physical attacks can be quite destructive. Balzack has some valor as well, you will need to do about 300 damage or so to him to best him. 500 EXP is your reward.

Unfortunately for your party, Marquis de Leon shows up. He is the true ruler of this castle and mentions how Psaro would be upset if they lost the castle. So, he attacks your party. Do not worry when you get trounced, for you cannot win. His physical attacks will do you in easily.

The party wakes up in the jail cell next to the former King of Palais de Leon, the one that the monsters supplanted. Marquis de Leon is actually his son who screwed his father over and threw him in jail. Destroy the boulders for a Seed of Strength and then go south for a Boarding Pass. Take the route out, but the stairs come up in the middle of the entrance. The guards attack you and Oojam sacrifices himself. If you return to the castle you can talk to Oojam one last time.

Havre Leon

Rest up and save. Take the northwest exit for the port. Before you enter the boat get the 15 Gold and Medicinal Herb outside the boat. Not much to do on the boat though you should get the Seed of Magic in the lower floor, and you have to talk to everyone to get the boat moving. Go up and talk to the Captain; you cannot return so burn the rest of your gold on weapons / armor that you can use later.
Meena and Maya make their way to Endor and Chapter 4 ends.

Chapter 5 : The Chosen

Hidden Village

The hero lives in a village sheltered from the world of Dragon Quest IV. Explore the town when you regain control of your hero, as you are to deliver a lunch to your father. A weird guy was let in to stay at the Inn. Your father is in the north part of town, so give him your lunch and return home.

When you do, everyone is in a panic. Monsters have found the village. As you retreat, the townsmen tell you of your fate. You are the hero, but you are weak and must hide to survive right now. Your friend gives you the Big Book of Beasts aka the Beastiary.

When the commotion settles, leave the hamlet with the hero. Go to the shack just south of here. Check the grave for Seed of Life, and check inside the house for 50 Gold, Medicinal Herb and the Leather Armour. The dwarf looking guy tells you of a castle to the southeast.

Casabranca Castle

Sure enough, you find Casabranca Castle. Funny how no one came across your village prior to this since the castle is not far away at all.

You hear a few important things here, like that monsters are after Torneko for building that tunnel and that the twin sisters are at Endor. A Set of Plain Clothes can be found in the east end of town.

Leave and take the Trans-Montane Tunnel to Endor.

Endor

First thing upon entering besides resting, is going to the west part of town and talking to Meena. Get your fortune read and she’ll figure out that you’re the Hero of the Chosen Ones! Now get Maya at the Casino. Hopefully you bought some spare weapons / armor with the sisters so you can sell them here or give them to the Hero. Either way you need to get the Hero some nice weapons and armor, and you can get the Half Plate Armor, Iron Shield and Hardwood Headwear for the Hero in Endor. His best weapon, Steel Broadsword, can be purchased at Ballymoral.

To earn enough Gold to get all this stuff, go east of Casabranca to an oasis Inn. You can find a Packed Lunch and 15 Gold here. A young man named Hank Hoffman Jr is here and he has the horse and carriage. But he is a tough lad and seems ornery. Talk to Hank Hoffman Sr, the Innkeeper, to learn more about him.

Outside of this place are the toughest enemies you can face so far. The Jinksters in particular yield a lot of EXP and Gold. They were much harder in Dragon Warrior IV when they actually had enough MP to cast Firebal / Sizz. Try to get Hero up to level 10 or so as he has a significant test coming up.

Symbol of Faith Cave

To the far east of the Desert Oasis Inn is the cave where Hank Hoffman Jr was betrayed. As you go through the cave and follow the path, the two sisters will have in a pit, leaving the Hero by his lonesome. Take the stairs down until you see the sisters.

These are not the sisters though as you soon find out. These two enemies can Dazzle you, making physical attacks nearly impossible to land. Use Sizz if this is the case or just wait until the effect of Dazzle runs out.

You will fall down a pit now and see another set of Maya and Meena. Talk to them but again they are not your friends, but boss enemies. Two Tricksy’s and two Vampire Bats. Kill those Tricksy’s quick and then the Vampire Bats should be easy to mop up. You will gain nearly 1000 EXP for this.

Take the next few staircases to see yet another group of sisters. Answer ‘no’ and they will know it is you. Now that the group is together keep taking the south staircase until you reach a room with a ton of brick walls. Blow up the north most wall in the center and walk down to find a hidden room with the Symbol of Faith.

Desert Inn

Walk back to the Desert Inn to present the Symbol of Faith to Hank Hoffman Jr. Hank Hoffman Junior is a changed man and joins the party, of course with the Wagon and Mary Lou.

Now you can travel south through the desert with the Wagon and Hank Hoffman. You will need to veer off to the east a bit as you go south to avoid the craters.

Bath Town

Uh, I liked Aneaux much better here. But now this town is called Bath. Check behind the Inn to the right of you for Antidotal Herb, then go through the door by the Weapon Shop. You will find 50 Gold.

Check the northwest part of town (at night) to see the ghost of Bladud who knows about the Zenithian Armor. Search his grave for a Seed of Strength. Now go back south a bit and look for a side door that leads to a merchant’s house, he has a Seed of Agility lying around here. A bath area is in the northeast. You can find a Mini Medal here. The weird Inn just south of here has a Leather Shield. Not much else to do in this town.

Porthtrunnel

Directly south of Bath Town, near the coast, is the port town of Porthtrunnel. There is a treasure at the top of the Inn but you cannot get it yet. The southwest house has a set of Wayfarer’s Clothes. The northeast part of town has a Mini Medal.

Check the Armour Shop for Golden Tiara’s. Nothing else is new. The townsfolk mostly talk about the Pharos Beacon Tower to the east but also of Mintos across the ocean.

Pharos Beacon Tower

The dark light emanating from Pharos Beacon Tower is causing ships to get lost and destroyed as they sail around.

As you enter, the center area has a few treasures. Head in there for 400 Gold and a Seed of Resilience. To the north is Torneko Taloon who just seems to be waiting for help. Tell him you will help him out.

Up the stairs and head left as you get out for Mini Medal. Take the southwest stairs for a Phial of Magic Water and then return to the previous floor. You still need to take the southeast path for a Seed of Strength and the center staircase going up to continue.

Watch for the pit, then talk to the Mini Demon nearby. He was going to ambush Torneko but you tell him that Torneko ran away. Mini-demon casts Zoom and gets knocked out from the wall. Continue with the south path that winds east and north. Keep heading north for a Moonwort Bulb, then go west all the way for a Hunter’s Bow. Take the north-center stairs going up, then head south for some Holy Embers. Take these Holy Ember’s to the northeast staircase.

Go west for a Golden Tiara. In the center you see some monsters marching around the dark flame. Two Flamethrowers and a Tigergram. This is a boss battle but not one that is too difficult. Have Maya use Bang to attack all the enemies at first, then she can start using spells like Sap to reduce the defense of the Tigergram in particular. With Meena try to put the Tigergram to sleep right away to buy you some time to take out the Flamethrowers. The Flamethrowers have decent physical attacks and Sizz can do about 15 on each member. They have a small HP count though.

Meanwhile just keep the Tigergram asleep and with Sap you should be able to do a number on him, though he does have over 200 HP. 2220 EXP is your reward along with 454 Gold.

Go up to the fire and throw in the Holy Embers (item – use). The evil light is extinguished and the holy light burns bright. Zoom on over to Porthtrunnel.

Porthtrunnel

Talk to Torneko in the northwest part of town, by the port. He is pleased that you defeated the evil beings at Pharos Beacon but is worried for his safety because of the monsters targetting him. Allow him to join you in your travels.

Watch the boat sail away. You now have control and can go anywhere on the land, though it is hinted that you should go south to Mintos.

Mintos

As you get to Mintos, Hank Hoffman Jr decides it is time to leave your party and be an Innkeeper. Ah okay, but hey he lets us keep his horse and carriage. What a guy. He does say that Conrad Ilton lives here, the guy with the Treasure Map.

First off, Mintos has some nice weapons and armor. Better yet if you followed my advice and stocked Torneko’s inventory with expensive weapons / armor when you finished DWIV Chapter 3, you should be able to sell all that for 10000+ Gold. Don’t get too crazy spending though, there are better weapons and armor that you can now acquire with the ship at your disposal especially for the Hero. However the Iron Helmet is a good addition for someone like Taloon. The Full Plate Armor, not so much, since it is just an incremental increase from the Half Plate Armour (+5).

Check the southwest well for a Mini Medal and the southeast for a Seed of Resilience. Another Mini Medal in the east part of the town and a Scale Shield in the house over there. Moonwort Bulb outside the Inn and a Seed of Wisdom on the 2nd floor of the Inn. A few curious folks on the 2nd floor, Borya and Kiryl in fact. Kiryl is sick and the Princess Alena went off to search for a cure, as you’ve heard from the townsfolk. Let Borya join you as you go to look for Kiryl’s cure.

Before you leave Mintos be sure to talk to Conrad Ilton in the center of town. Tell him no, you’re not interested in the ocean. Then take his test, and you will pass. The Treasure Map is your reward.

Parthenia

Head east a good deal from Mintos and then south until you reach the Kingdom of Parthenia. This is a poor country, and their Feverfew Seeds are locked in the Imperial Pantry to the south. A Seed of Magic in the southeast portion of the place. If you want to be a jerk you can take the 3 Gold in the pot in his ‘throne room’.

Imperial Pantry

Southwest a decent haul and you will find the Imperial Pantry. Enter and you will see Alena doing her classic wall kick to open the door.

As you soon find out, this icy place has ice-steps that push you the direction they are facing. You will need to manipulate these to get around here. Take the southwest stairs down to continue on.

Alena and friends are walking in a circle here. You should take the far west path going north to get a Seed of Life, and then take the steps again to get to the northeast area. You have plenty of paths to go here, but stick to the northwest, not hitting any spaces. Eventually you run into a path going south that has a Robe of Serenity, terrific armour for a mage. Head directly east from that south path to get 800 Gold after a short speed-step east. Go to the southeast now and take the inner path, so that you can take the stairs going down to the south.

Lots of speed steps in this area. Take the far northeast ones to go to the north end. On this north end, go west a bit and look for any one of the three speed steps that takes you to the west end. Ignore the treasure on this side unless you want to fight a Cannibox. Now for the correct path to get to the treasure you want, go north of the Cannibox and take the uppermost 4-speed-step set to your right. This speed step path takes you to a Feverfew Seed! Cast Evac and then Zoom to Parthenia.

Parthenia / Mintos
Back at Parthenia, return to the king and watch the Feversew Plants grow. The king then hands you a Feverfew Root, so Zoom back to Mintos.

Use that Feverfew Root on Kiryl. Kiryl and Alena will join you here, leaving you with just one more member to find. The bard hanging outside the room overheard your conversation. He gives you your next lead, this one on Ragnar McRyan. It seems Ragnar is headed to the western continent Libeccio, specifically the Palais de Leon.

Havre Leon

Zoom to Endor and then travel southwest to Havre Leon. You will come across a single house on an island, go here to learn that the Lord of the Underground’s Castle is located underneath the ground. This explains the issues at Mamon Mine. Grab the Mini Medal here before you leave.

The shrine east of the Havre Leon port will tell you that Ragnar McRyan is near, and that the light is close to joining forces as a whole.

Dunplundrin

Go to Mamon Mine, and then sail north. You will find a village you have not seen yet, the Pirate Town of Dunplundrin. Check the northwest house for a Leather Hat. Underneath the well is a pair of Fishnet Stockings and a Mini Medal. The Fishnet Stockings are new ‘accessories’ added in Dragon Quest IV DS. This particular accessory increases defense by 8 for females.

You wil hear a lot about the Sands of Time in this village. Travel here at night or just use the Night Light. The water rises near the village but notice a crater in the ground. Make note of where that is and stay at the Inn. The water goes back down during the day so find that spot and search for the Karstaway Stone.

From this village, travel west through that side of the map and to the northeast corner. You will see a kingdom on an island here, Minikin’s Dominion to be exact.

Minikin’s Dominion

Finally, you can exchange all of those Mini Medals you have found. This is not like the Small Medal King in Dragon Warrior IV, because you do not get to choose how you want to use your Mini Medals. Instead, you get rewards based on certain numbers of Mini Medals collected. For example your first reward is a Strength Ring for 15 Mini Medals. At least you can cast Zoom to get here again unlike Dragon Warrior IV.

Canalot

Might as well continue on a tangent here, because we can get something very useful easily. Head north of Zalenagrad and Zamoksva (which is infested by monsters) until you get to the extreme northwest part of the map. A weird island here, you need to land on the mountainous part to the east (and walk to the castle).

It seems that the king has ordered people to make him laugh to raise spirits. Check behind the Pub for a Mini Medal and in the nearby house for yet another Mini Medal. The shops may be worth checking out, particularly a Cloak of Evasion for Borya, but nothing else really has value.

North to the castle. Detour west for a Seed of Strength right as you enter. Now take one of the side paths to check out the ground floor level. You will find a Mini Medal, Phial of Magic Water and a Chimaera Wing. Return back and take the center route into the castle.

You will hear a lot about Zenithia and the Zenithian Equipment. Turns out the Zenithian Helmet is here at Canalot and the Zenithian Shield might be in Burland. Now go to the top and try to make the king laugh, but you cannot. Think to what everyone was talking about in town. Tom Foolery was mentioned along with much talk about entertainers from Laissez Fayre. Zoom to Havre Leon and walk to Laissez Fayre.

Laissez Fayre

Head to Manager Artois’ room and speak with Tom Foolery. Have him join your party and put him in the lead. Now go back to Canalot. Tom Foolery does not have any good jokes but he gets you the Zenithian Helmet nonetheless. This is the best helmet for the Hero. Tom Foolery then leaves the party.

Aubout du Monde

Zoom back to Laissez Fayre and go north to Aubout du Monde. You can still rest for free and an interesting merchant from the Bazaar is here. Nothing really special here though unless you still want to get a Cloak of Evasion. More importantly speak with the slime in the bottom level of Mr Mahabala’s house. Turns out the Magic Key is nearby.

Mr Mahabala’s Laboratory / Cave

You should know the layout pretty well here since you’ve already searched it before. You are looking to get to B3, where you recruited Oojam in DQIV Chapter 4. Basically, take the elevator in the northeast in floor 1. Then head straight west when you get out for another elevator. Go east and search the treasure in the middle of peninsula. Press the switch after searching the empty treasure – a staircase emerges!

Go inside and get the Mini Medal and Seed of Magic. Oh, and of course the Magic Key.

Palais de Leon

Before you go parading into Palais de Leon, you will probably want to grind for a bit. The boss in here will not go lightly on you. I’m generally in the mid teens when I come around these parts and I like to get Maya up to 19 so she can cast Frizzle. I also had close to 35000 Gold thanks to the purple statues that drop 300 Gold per enemy. With that kind of money, go to Endor and head east just as you enter. Go inside that building and buy Liquid Metal Armour for your hero. This is the best armour in the game, even stronger than the Zenithian Armour. Unfortunately it is now 35000 Gold instead of 15000 Gold like it was in DWIV.

When you are ready to give it a shot, take your new Magic Key to Palais de Leon and enter the right side door. Make your way north to find Ragnar McRyan! The Scottish fellow charges through the door but guards come. Ragnar takes out the guards but your party will need to fight the Marquis de Leon.

Have Maya keep up with the Sap to keep his defence low, and use Frizzle (high level fire magic) to do close to 100 damage in her other turns. Alena and Hero should fight, and then bring in an extra healer. Or if you like Borya and he has Oomph, you should abuse that here on your fighters. It’s probably a better strategy than having Maya in there, to be honest, because then you will have Alena and Hero taking off 110-140 damage each turn and Crackle with Borya for 40 damage. Having an extra healer (aside from Hero) is probably your best bet though, unless you are over-leveled. Kiryl in particular is worth having for Kabuff to save you some trouble with the physical attacks.

His Chilly Breath does a number on your party, around 40-50 to each. Sizz does about half that, and his regular attacks are powerful but can be negated with Kabuff by Kiryl. Marquis de Leon has close to 1000 hit points so this battle will be long. Keep up the Frizzle and physical attacks to wear him down and hope he does not use the chilly breath tactic too much. 5100 EXP and a Full Plate Armour are your rewards.

Ragnar joins your party and the Marquis de Leon regains consciousness. Healie the human thanks you for your efforts.

Cave North of Minikin’s Domain

Zoom to Minikin’s domain and rest up. With the Magic Key you can enter the water cave to the north via raft.

Take the east route and look for a Mini Medal to your right. Continue north and take the first west path that extends to a new area for a Mini Medal. Follow that path north, west, and south into a new area (don’t leave your boat). Some shoals are in your way in this center room, but work your way to the west screen. Take the stairs to the west of you on the island.

Grab the Mini Medal and Zenithian Armour! Well that was easy.

Zamoksva

Now that Marquis de Leon has been defeated, your next task to is cleanse Zamoksva from enemy rule. Try to be in the low 20’s and again you will probably want to bring in an extra healer (in addition to the Hero, I mean).

He used to be Balzack. Now he is Baalzack! He says he is stronger than Psaro the Manslayer himself. This version of Baalzack likes to use Crackle for 20-40 damage on each member, and use cool breath for 10 damage on everyone. He has some devastating physical attacks too. Hopefully you have the Zenithian Armour and or Liquid Metal Armour equipped on your studs (Hero and Ragnar) as that will make all the attacks much more palatable. Having Borya along is best so that your attackers do maximum damage with Oomph to boost their attack. Baalzack does not have much more HP than Marquis de Leon, somewhere a little over 1000 HP probably. 6500 EXP is your reward and Baalzack kicks the bucket finally, after his 2nd defeat.

The Minidemons analyze what has gone on. The Secret of Evolution hasn’t been perfected and they must report back to Psaro. The Armlet of Transmutation seems to be important here.

Now that you blew Baalzack out of the castle, go downstairs. You can take the chests on the 1st floor protected by the Magic Key door. The Flute of Revelation is a key item that you get, along with the Magma Staff. Also you get a Seed of Strength.

Straithbaile

Zoom to Straithbaile. You can stay at the Inn if you want to see an interesting dream that everyone else is seeing. But the real business is to get on your boat and travel east past the craters, then land and walk south.

You will come to a large brown crater. Walk up all the way north and use the Magma Staff. A cool scene commences as your party is allowed to continue onward now. Don’t forget to pick the Magma Staff back up though since it is such a powerful weapon for a mage.

Femiscyra Castle

A short distance north from here is the female-only castle of Femiscyra. Enter the castle and see the stairs to the north? Go behind them for a staircase down. Grab the Fire Claw, Alena’s best weapon. Alena is now an absolute terror and should be used the rest of the game unless you get sick of her poor defence.

The southwest part of the castle has a Mini Medal. Of interest at the armour shop is the Pink Leotard; though expensive it is great armour for females.

Go to the second floor and the northeast room for a Seed of Agility and Leather Dress. The queen herself is not very nice, she just tells you to leave. Back to floor 1. The east room has a Seed of Wisdom and a shady character who tells you to look in the cabinet. Whether you do or not, try to leave and you will be framed.

Just wait in your jail cell. Someone will come to get you for an audience with the queen. You have an opportunity to find the crook who framed you regarding the bronze rosary. Rest up and head to the southeast cave. Might be wise to bring Borya here, you will need Sap.

Cave southeast of Femiscyra Castle

Walk until you get to a fork going west, south, or east. East leads to a Mini Medal and south to a dead end. So take the west path as you work your way north until you get to a T fork. South here and follow it east and north (on the lower path) fora Seed of Strength. South leads to nothing so take the upper path north.

Another T on this upper path, so take the eastern route that leads to a stairway down and 1050 Gold Coins. Take the southern route now, a long path that leads to a staircase down to B2.

Upon entry of B2, take the southwest stairs and take the first path south (the far northwest is a dead end). That south path though will take you to a Seed of Resilience. Go east and south a bit here, but west when you can. All the way west to the wall for an Iron Mask, a great helmet for Ragnar, then south for a Dragon Shield. Again, another great piece of armour for Ragnar. Now just go to the very southeast corner of the map, which allows you to travel west along this southern wall until you reach a staircase to B3.

Your thief is down here sleeping. Search around the room first for a Phial of Holy Water, Mini Medal and Mercury’s Bandana. This is another accessory, one of my favorites as it will allow your agility to skyrocket by 15 for whoever equips it. Give it to your healer, and then confront the sleeping thief. He tries to run, so just get in his way and chat with him.

Time to fight that bad dude Kirk Buzzer. Kirk likes to use Crackle on your party but fortunately he only attacks once per turn. Frizzle and Zap work nicely to take off 70-80 per turn. However Kirk Buzzer will also use Kabuff on himself to make his physical defence impenetrable, unless you counter with Sap to reduce it again. Otherwise you will have to rely on Zap and the rest of your spells. Kirk probably has a little more HP than the last few bosses you fought, but not much. Maybe close to 1500 HP. 7400 EXP and a Seed of Agility are your rewards.

Seems like some Femiscyra guards have followed you in here and witnessed what happened.

Femiscyra Castle

Talk to the queen. She rewards you with the Ultimate Key, allowing you to open any door in the world. This opens up the rest of the game to you, and allows you to take back your companion that is in prison. The queen also mentions Rosehill to the south, and the Zenithian Shield in the basement which you can have.

Lakanaba

Make a quick trip to Lakanaba. You will need to Zoom to Ballymoral since you cannot directly go to Lakanaba. Head to the weapon shop that Torneko used to run. Use the Ultimate Key to get a Chain Sickle, Seed of Strength, and an Icicle Dirk. The Icicle Dirk is one of the best weapons you can find for the time being.

Rosehill Village

Sail east of Endor and look for a river going up. Take this and you will see Rosehill on your right. Home of the dwarf’s, and you may recognize this place from your dreams.

Check the north part of town and talk to the person who tells you about Rose’s teardrops. Search the garden in front of him for a Seed of Magic. The Inn has a Poison Needle inside. Check the drawer in the bottom level of the monster church for a Mini Medal.

Use the Flute of Revelation on the square-shaped spot with a purple center, in front of the church. This activates the elevator going down. Follow the path for some stairs up to the top of the tower, and Sir Roseguardin the knight who is guarding the area. He can use the Sphere of Silence, maybe the most annoying part of this fight. So bring healing items and don’t go mage-heavy. Maybe bring Borya to cast Oomph at the beginning of the battle on Ragnar with his new Icicle Dirk. Otherwise just attack him. He may summon a Chillanodon ally. Besides that, he has very powerful physical attacks that can screw you over if you are silenced all around. Anyway, he has about 1200 HP so take him out and take your rewards; 7008 EXP and the Sphere of Silence.

Now you can go south and talk to the characters. The slime will tell you of the Royal Crypt and the Mod Rod which can be found there.

Minikin’s Domain

You should have at least 15 Mini Medals (19 if you are following the guide), so that should net you the Strength Ring. Once you have 20, you get the Ruby of Protection.

Travel south of Minikin’s Dominion, and land on that piece of land just east of the Symbol of Faith Cave. Continue south here and look for a cave west near a small piece of water. Use that Karstaway Stone that you found in the pirate village. The water recedes, and you can go down the staircase.

Use the Magic Key and Ultimate Key to go through this part, grabbing the Sands of Time while you are at it.

Work your way west on the next floor, going north when you see a chest for a Mini Medal. Continue west and follow the path as it wraps north and east for the stairs down.

Directly south in this next area leads to a Death Mask, so skip that path unless you want to bother with selling this cursed helmet. Travel east and take the first south path for 780 Gold. Go all the way east now, then all the way south and west for the Liquid Metal Sword! Give this to Ragnar and watch him maul any enemy. This is the best sword / weapon in the entire game, more powerful than the Zenithian Sword even.

Royal Crypt

Southwest of Endor is a shrine that requires the Ultimate Key to enter. This is a terrific place to level up (even before you get the key) because you can fight Liquid Metal Babbles here. Tough to kill, but they net you 10000 EXP each! Defeating them becomes much easier once you acquire the Liquid Metal Sword. The Liquid Metal Sword does 2 damage each time to a Metal Babble, and it hits nearly every time (and they have about 4-5 HP).

Anyway, go north to the first basement area stairs. Then take the speed steps to the north for another staircase down. More speed steps that you are forced to take, and another staircase down. In this next basement area just hit the speed steps west of you to come up by a Staff of Antimagic. Then go west and you will see a treasure enclosed just south of you. Work your way here to grab the Mini Medal, then travel all the way south, east, and northeast for the stairs going up.

Go west and north to a recovery point on this new floor. This makes leveling up around here that much easier. I would suggest farming Metal Babbles until your heart’s content. Only downside is that since the Wagon does not come with, only the four characters with will gain levels. This sucks since this is my main level-up spot in the game, but to be fair I don’t use more than 4-6 characters (Meena and Taloon tend to get the shaft for me every time, and I usually only use Borya or Maya, not both).

To continue, go southwest all the way for the stairs going up. Without hitting the speed steps, go west all the way and south all the way. Now east just a tad for the Mod Rod. If you go back north and take the speed steps east you can go in that center building which has a teleport back to B3. Not really worth your time to take unless you want to go back to the recovery point to grind. Some tough battles loom so spending time here would be a wise choice.

Minikin’s Kingdom

You should have 20 Mini Medals at this poin, netting you a Ruby of Protection. 25 Mini Medals gets you the Magical Skirt.

Riverton

You have not been to this continent yet, but it is just a bit southwest of Mintos. Interesting information here about people being able to fly around the continent, and that the ability to do so may rest with the Lord of the Underground. Take the center island Mini Medal and check out the weapon shop. The Dragonsbane is one of the few weapons stronger than the Icicle Dirk, but you may be using your Gold for several sets of Liquid Metal Armour at Endor instead.

The northeast house has a Gold Bracer, a weak accessory that only provides +5 defense. You can find a Moonwort Bulb just south of there.

Stone Colossus

South of Riverton is an strange structure. A tower in the shape of a colossus. The priest gives you a hint about the eyes, and then use the Ultimate Key to enter 1F.

There is the set of stairs just north of you, but go further north for a Mini Medal. Take the 640 Gold and the stairs going up in the next room. Another set of stairs going up is just west as you get back on 1F.

Now on 2F, travel south a bit and then work your way east for a Seed of Agility. Go back east all the way and then south for the stairs going to 3F. Plenty of options in this room, though this first two entrances on the east side of the center building lead to nothing. Take the nearby stairs to find a Hela Hammer. This is powerful yet cursed. Instead, go back down and travel to the northeast part of the room to find a back entrance to the center area. Take the stairs up here.

The treasure chest above the stairs is a Mimic. Fight it at your own risk, for the reward is minimal. Up the stairs and you find yourself with two ledges to jump down. Take the west one to jump out the right eye (the other eye takes you to the Hammer which you already got). A few sets of stairs going up and then you can hit the lever to move the Stone Colossus. Birds get scared and fly away. It looks pretty cool. Jump off one of the sides and you will be off the Colossus.

Diabolic Hall

Rest up as soon as you get out of the Colossus, because you need to reach the Diabolic Hall or else you will have to do it all over again. The Dragon Riders in particular are troublesome.

As you enter the Diabolic Hall, you can walk around freely but if you want to talk to the monsters you need to use the Mod Rod until you are another monster. Otherwise they attack you. Take the stairs down in the northwest part of this first room.

Another Mini Medal down here, along with a Prayer Ring in the cell. Also a Lucida Shard that raises luck in the southeast. The merchant outside tells you of the Mod Rod if you don’t already know. Take the stairs going down in this basement and follow the ensuing stairs until you reach a meeting between two monsters. There seems to be an Aamon character that is plotting to overthrow Psaro the Manslayer. Also you hear about Estark the Emperor of Monsterkind.

Back inside and go east through the doors to talk to the monsters about the meeting and the gas balloon. Take the stairs up then the stairs down nearby. You will be outside, where you can walk west and north for a room with 4 treasures. A Seed of Magic is first, then south for a Mimic, east for a Tempest Shield, and north for a Mini Medal. The real prize is the Tempest Shield for Ragnar, which is +20 better than the Dragon Shield.

Back to the throne room area on the 2nd floor. Go outside the door and then jump off the balcony. Use Safe Passage to get to the other side of this building that you cannot enter. A staircase is going down nearby. A Kamikazee Bracer lies in front of the grave.

At the throne room again, talk to the beast outside and then everyone inside. Sit by the Bengal type enemy and Psaro the Manslayer will fly in. Estark has revived at Mamon Mine. Those idiot miners dug all the way to his crypt.

Mamon Mine

Zoom over to Mamon Mine to hear the town is in even worse shape than before. Head down to where you found the Powder Keg back in Chapter 4. Just continue to head north in these two new areas, no treasures of note but you can talk to a few monsters along the way.

You will reach a dwarf who is happy about the gold he has dug to, but he seems delusional. North of here is a new area, and the first building is a recovery spot. Enter the building east of here.

Go north to the second room, and then start collecting the treasures. The first one you see is a Mini Medal, then a Phial of Magic Water, 2480 Gold, Seed of Strength, Seed of Agility, then take the stairs going up just south of here.

On the rooftop, ignore the first staircase you get to. This just leads you to the bottom pit surrounding the Ruler of Evil. Instead take the southeast stairs, and then grab the Mini Medal from the left chest and the right chest is actually a Mimic. There is a flame blocking a chest on a pedestal, could that be something to run the balloon everyone has been talking about? The flame will not extinguish so long as Lord Estark lives. Take the stairs just northwest of here. And another set of stairs.

You are now in front of those three cronies blocking you from Estark. Fight them, it is just two Cheater Cheetah’s and Rhinocerex. The cheetah’s go down quick, so deal with them and then worry about the Rhinocerex who attacks twice and powerful attacks at that. These guys drop a Full Plate Armour.

Rest up before going up to that big blue giant Lord Estark. Estark is damn powerful when asleep, emitting a light that takes off about 50 to everyone twice per round until he wakes up. When he is up, expect some physical attacks and he will also use chilly breath which takes off 50 like the emitted light earlier, though the Hero’s Zenithian equipment makes it 10 for him / her. Definitely have Ragnar along for this battle because of his HP, defense, and attack with the Liquid Metal Sword. Then pick one of the healers, and then one of the black mages. If you bring Borya along, try to use Oomph on your attackers to make Ragnar and Hero even more powerful. Maya should be using Frizzle. If you want to be risky you could try to finish this battle with just the Hero as a healer and Ragnar, Alena and Maya /Borya attacking. Either way keep up with the Full Heals as Estark will take about 2600-2800 HP or so to finish. 15000 EXP is your reward and Psaro the Manslayer comes in to see the Lord of the Underworld go down.

Grab the Gas Canister that the fire spirit was blocking earlier, then cast Evac.

Riverton

Zoom over to Riverton and give the Gas Canister to the guy in the house just south of the Inn and Armour Shop. Spend the night at the Inn and then talk to him. He has the first Flying Machine and it is yours.

El Forado

With your new hot air balloon, fly over to the X on the treasure map now that you can cross over the craters. Land and enter the World Tree, Yggdrasil.

Before you enter the tree there is a town below. The armour shop to the right has some nice choices. The Power Shield is really only useful for Kiryl or Torneko, but very much so, especially if you use Kiryl a lot. The Flowing Dress is great equipment for Maya or Borya. Talk to the people in the village – you are only to bring 3 characters into Yggdrasil, as someone at the top is calling for help. Who to bring besides the Hero? I tend to take Alena for her quick, high-powered attack, and then Maya or Borya. I leave Kiryl and the Healer’s back because the Hero can act as the Healer, plus, you can search anywhere in the Yggdrasil tree to find a leaf that will revive a character, should thinks turn dire.

As you enter Yggdrasil, take the west staircase up for a Staff of Salvation. Go back and take the east staircase going up now. Take the south route and work west for another staircase going up.

You are now on 3F. Take the stairs going up just south of you for a Phial of Yggdrasil Dew. Now return to the previous floor and travel clockwise along the exterior of the room until you reach the stairs going up. Next floor, travel counter-clockwise until you reach the stairs going up.

At the top of Yggdrasil you see a fallen angel-looking character. It is Orifiela who descended from Zenithia. This is why you need 3 members, so she can join your party. In order to take the Stairway of Zenithia, she says you will need to have all the Zenithian equipment on you. The Zenithian Sword is actually on this east side of this floor of the Yggdrasil tree, so take it with you. It is actually less powerful than the Icicle Dirk at this point. However you still need to have it equipped before entering the Stairway to Zenithia.

Minikin’s Domain

Zoom over here. I had 27 Mini Medals saved up so your reward (for 25) is a Magical Skirt. When you have 30, you get a Staff of Divine Wrath.

Center of the World

With the hot air balloon, you can travel to that island in the center of the world covered by shoals. When you land you will see the mini map for this area.

Azimuth, gateway to Zenithia

When you land, go northeast above the eastern craters, and then southeast once you pass them to reach Azimuth. The northeast building has a Mini Medal. Check the northwest building for another Mini Medal, and you get word that the Zenithian Dragon God is waiting for you.

Speak with the prophets in the center. An ominous fate awaits, as even though you have defeated Estark as prophesized, there is no prophesy for the future battle with Psaro the Manslayer now that the Secret of Evolution has been perfected.

Stairway to Zenithia

Travel southwest of Azimuth, and equip all of your Zenithian Equipment as you walk up the tower. Once you enter, you can take off the Zenithian Sword for the Dragonsbane or Icicle Dirk if you wish (actually after experimenting, you don’t need to have all the Zenithian Equipment equipped to enter on the DS version).

Both sets of stairs on the first floor lead to the 2nd floor. Take the southwest staircase in the next room and then go up the next two sets of stairs for a Dragon Shield. Back to the 2nd floor and take the southeast stairs. You are now on the ledge. Head inside in the room for a Glombolero, great defensive armour for a mage. Hop on the elevator nearby. Then take take the elevator in the back on the next floor (the door leads to nothing).

Enter through the door you see, then go down the stairs. In this next room you have to work you way west, so take the first stairs you see going up for a Phial of Yggdrasil Dew. Back and take the west-most stairs up.

You now have a large ladder to climb or an elevator to ride down. The elevator just acts as a quick retreat to the lower floors, so take the ladder into a new area.

Use the southeast stairs and then go east and down again to a new floor on the far right side of this tower. You will find a room with a silver symbol and a brown spot in the middle – search for a Mini Medal. Down the staircase for another Mini Medal, and a Seed of Strength. Back to the area where you climbed up the ladder and chose the southeast stairs – you are now to take the southwest ones and you will ride the elevator high up to the top part of the tower.

When you get out, go east for a Kerplunk Bracer. Follow the path and the stairs that go across the middle of the room. This is a long path that eventually leads to you flying up to Zenithia.

Zenithia

Orifiela leaves your party and thanks you for bringing her back. Enter the first door to your left and talk to the Minidemon for some Yggdrasil Dew. The room next door has a Mini Medal in the drawer. Go down the east stairs and talk to Orifiela. She sends Sparkie with you, a Dragon Pup.Time to speak with the Zenith Dragon. As you talk to him, evil beams spring out from behind the castle. The Dragon God gives you about 20000 EXP, blesses your Zenithian Sword, and sends you off to Nadiria. To begin the journey, head to the eastern basement room where you got Sparkie, and go out that door to the south. Jump down the hole.

Road to Nadiria

Quickly head north twice through a door for a Shimmering Dress. Now follow the path and stick to the west routes, and you will soon reach a room with speed steps. Take the southeastern-most ones for a Mini Medal, then head back to the eastern room.

Continue in a counter-clockwise manner; you’re not going in circles, you are actually going from floor to floor this way. Take the next west exit but there are no speed steps here. Go west in this room for a Thalian Staff. Continue due south but you will see a Mimic chest surrounded by poison. Ignore it if you like and continue clockwise here until you reach the stairs going up.

More speed steps by you. Take the southwest speed steps for a Suit of Hela’s Armour, but it is cursed so do not equip it. Travel east using the east-most speed step that is heading east (so that you can reach that staircase down. Take the Seed of Life, Seed of Agility, Seed of Strength and 3280 Gold. Then the stairs down.

You now have a raft at your disposal. Travel northwest for a Mighty Armlet, a great supplement to your attack power. Take the south route and go east for a Flowing Dress. The other island to the rest has a staircase going down, so take that. Don’t miss the Seed of Magic along the way.

You will eventually make your way out of Nadiria and onto a short tower. Down the steps for a Seed of Life, but return up them and jump down for a Mirror Shield. Keep going down and south to exit out.

Heaven’s Haven

The place south of here is Heaven’s Haven. You can rest for free and save here thanks to the angel, who warms you about Psaro the Manslayer’s ongoing evolution. There are four barriers on the corners that you must take out in order to enter Psaro’s castle.

Southwest Barrier

Go down the stairs to the south and then you will be in a room with 5 statues that follow your every move. They move much slower than you but still do a good job of staying in front of you. You should be able to inch your way across the sides so long as those exterior statues do not touch you.

Speak with the huge Pruslas, who looks like Baalzack’s final form. Don’t listen to him and instead just talk to him again to start the battle. As you can imagine, Pruslas has a decent physical attack, a ton of HP, and really only relies on physical attacks. Though he will cast Kasap and defend on some turns. He does attack twice, but is very slow and goes even after Ragnar generally. Mow down his 2000 or so HP, you are rewarded with 4100 EXP and an Oaken Club.

Northwest Barrier

No strategy involved in getting to the boss here, but boy does this guy pack a punch. I don’t remember him being this dangerious in the NES version. His defense is much higher than the previous boss, though he only attacks once. Actually sometimes he attacks twice, most often when doing physical attacks. He likes to use a scream to stun you and exhale chilly breath. The scariest attack is when he pulls out the blistering flames that takes off upwards of 100 per character! Hopefully he doesn’t go twice after using that. His HP is pretty high, probably close to 3000. 5500 EXP and a valuable Miracle Sword are your rewards. This is the best weapon for Kiryl and Torneko Taloon. Lovable guy that Torneko is, I can’t imagine many are using him at this point so it is probably best with the popular Kiryl.

Northeast Barrier

Take the stairs to the north, and then you have two sets of stairs to take. The nearby northeast stairs lead to a powerful yet cursed Suit of Zombie Mail. Take the other set of stairs all the way to the top to see a friendly priest.

Well at first he looked friendly. This monster claims to have ordered the abduction of Rose. Aamon here is the monster that the insurrectionists at the Diabolic Hall were talking about, who was to overthrow Psaro as the leader of monsterkind. Aamon reflects all spells so just use physical attacks, but you might want to dispose of the Drooling Ghouls first. They sometimes dodge your attacks but do not do much to hurt you. Aamon will use Kacrackle, Kaswoosh, Frizzle, and sometimes will go twice per turn. His attacks really are not that powerful, the previous boss was much more difficult. Plus Aamon’s HP count is relatively low, so this battle should not take long. 8092 EXP is your reward for stopping Aamon.

Southeast Barrier

All that is left is the southeast barrier. Enter, go down the stairs, and you will see a purple dragon. Three Rashaverak’s are here to stop you. These guys will burp up hot gas a lot. Use Kazap a few times and these guys will likely get burned up in 2 or 3 rounds. Not much harder than a regular battle to be honest and if you use Kabuff their physical attacks will basically do nothing. 3080 EXP and a Dragon Shield are your rewards.

Finally you can enter Psaro the Manslayer’s Castle.

Also since you probably have at least 30 Mini Medals, go to Minikin and get Staff of Divine Wrath. For 34 Mini Medals you get a Kerplunk Bracer.

Psaro the Manslayer’s Castle

No more barrier so walk right in the door. Just follow the path to the stairs up in the southeast and watch out for the damage spots on the floor.

Make your way to the stairs down northwest of you, cast Safe Passage, and go south for a Mini Medal. Return up the stairs, and take the stairs to the right of you now. You are on the balcony, so head to the nearby door. Then head north skipping the gold button.

Instead, go north past the button and up the stairs. Now head east but look north behind the statues because one of them is hiding a passageway. Take the passage, down the stairs. Keep following the relatively long path until you get the Sage’s Stone, a fabulous healing item that casts Multiheal on your party just by using it in battle.

Return to the spot where you pushed the statue to get through the wall. Go east here instead and follow until you reach a Yggdrasil Leaf and Lightning Staff. The Lightning Staff would be useful if it was Kaboom instead of Boom. 30-40 damage just doesn’t cut it at this point even if it is against all enemies.

All the way back to the area with the gold switch on the ground. Hit it this time, and go south immediately. Follow the path northeast to a stairs up. Hit the gold switch in the next area you find for another elevator. This takes it down, so get back up the stairs and now just go northeast for the staircase up. Follow the path and you soon will be out of the castle.

Volcano

Enter the volcano area and walk all the way up. Psaro the Manslayer is in the midst of becoming pure evil.

The first form is a brown Estark clone. He tends to just use physical attacks so if you can Kabuff once or twice you are set. This version has plenty of hit points, near 2000 probably. Maya and Kafrizzle is a nice strategy for 180 or so damage each time. After about 5 turns of this and help from Ragnar, Psaro autotomises his arm. This Psaro will use extremely dangerous physical attacks for 120+ damage, and often times will get a critical hit wiping out a character. This is trouble especially if you have a Kerplunk Bracer that sometimes reflects even resurrection spells.

The Psaro Manslayer from with no arms is one of the trickiest. It can put you to sleep and really screw you over. Whack is never fun either. Also he will use Buff so it would be helpful to have the caravan to switch in Borya to counterattack with Sap. Or just use spells until it wears off. This version thankfully does not have much HP, and it’s head will blow up after the fight.

Now Psaro turns into a strange winged green monster. The Blistering Flames and Burp Gas are what gets you here. He also meditates to regain HP. Even though Kabuff does not help you against the Blistering Flames, still use it because he will do regular attacks occassionally and also will shoot waves from his fingertips to cancel out your buffs.

Next Psaro gains arms. This version loves physical attacks so get Kabuff up. Unfortunately the blistering flames still come at you. After a bit of damage, Psaro gains feet. This Psaro likes physical attacks too but he is known to spam blistering flames too.

Things get hairy after this. Psaro gains an extra head. And some horns, and eyes. He will attack, so keep up Kabuff, plus he will use that shining light from the fingertips ability. Of course, the blistering flames is still the worst. Probably most problematic at this point is you are probably dangerously low on MP, especially if you have had to use the same 4 characters. Kiryl and Meena in particular have a low MP count. Still, keep at it. This version of Psaro does not have that much more HP than any of the other ones. And the more Kabuff’s you can pull out the more turns he will waste on the fingertips ability.

Psaro the Manslayer is now unconscious. The volcano is then about to erupt, but the Dragon God saves you. Enjoy your ending. You can save your game at the end and it seems there is a Chapter 6 to be played still.
