Dragon Warrior 3 III FAQ

Dragon Warrior III improves greatly upon it's first two predecessors. You have four total characters instead of 3 from Dragon Warrior II. More importantly you are allowed to create as many characters as you want and you can choose between a variety of classes. Later on you can change their classes at level 20.

One character you must have is the Hero from Aliahan, Ortega's son. He has a good strength, defense, and learns both healing and attack spells. He is a bit slow however and gains levels slowly.
The standard three classes are Soldier, Wizard and Pilgrim. You can also choose a Merchant, Fighter or Goof-off. Later on in the game you can have Sages (a Wizard and Pilgrim combined).
Soldiers have great attack and defense. They gain levels quickly also. However they are slow and aren't very nimble. Merchants are pretty generic with no spells and pretty weak physical abilities but they find gold after battles and you need a merchant to start a town late in the game. Fighters are very fast and get critical hits very often. They can't equip most defensive equipment or weapons but are solid nonetheless. Wizards are weak but cast the strongest magical spells, while Pilgrim's have all the healing spells and are a bit more physically gifted than Wizards. Sage's though can equip the best weapons and armor for magicians and are the best class in the game.

Goof-off's are weak and are very limited in everything other than Luck basically. Fortunately you don't need the Book of Sartori to make them Sages so you can have multiple sages if you get a goof off to level 20.

The game is so much bigger than the previous two. You even get a full-scale Alefgard (from Dragon Warrior I) to explore at the end of Dragon Warrior III (yes, after the first entire world). Because the game is bigger your characters will get in the 40's for levels instead of 20's (like the first two).

Dragon Warrior 3 still requires lots of building up but isn't quite as unmerciful as the first two Dragon Quests. Most gamers will appreciate this as the game is more balanced with exploring and levelling up. While not as deep and good as Dragon Warrior IV, Dragon Warrior 3 is unique enough to compete with DWIV for one of the best RPGs on the NES.
