Battle of Mai Castle
“No one, no matter how famous or lucky, can completely avoid hardship. In point of fact, it is overcoming these hardships that brings one fame.
In the year 219 AD, even the officer praised as a god of war was being outmatched by the combined forces of Wu and Wei. On the brink of disaster, the dragon rose to face its ultimate challenge.”
Strategy: Well, it’s Guan Yu and Guan Ping’s last stand. The two of them are with their trusty general Zhou Cang, but alas they are overpowered in numbers vastly. Fortunately, none of the generals are powered up in this board for any of the available characters. Xing Cai acts as reinforcements in the southeast corner with Guan Xing, but they are far away from the castle in the northwest. Lu Meng is leading Wu, and Cao Ren is leading Wei, and you must kill them both to advance.
Guan Yu and Guan Ping more or less have the same fight. You’ll be swarmed immediately by numerous sub-generals, but nothing that should trouble two of the best playable characters on the game. You’ll probably run into Man Chong first if you head south immediately, and by the time you dispose of him Niu Jin will be bearing down on the east side of the castle. Wipe him out fast and mop up Cheng Pu and Zhu Ling in the very northwest corner of the stage. You’ll probably be getting yelled at about getting the gates to secure the reinforcements, so either Guan Yu or Guan Ping will offer to stay back and fight while the other secures the gates. You may or may not wish to do this, I tend to clear out the castle area a bit more before I go at least. If you go, you’ll get ambushed in the northeast by Ma Zhong and/or Pan Zhang. Zhu Ran and his sub-general Jiang Qin will probably be near, along with Xu Huang shortly thereafter. Lu Meng will stay at the same position, just north of the water. Charge him once you feel the castle area is cleaned up sufficiently.
Xing Cai is on the opposite end of the spectrum, trying to rush to save Guan Yu. Grab the gates and forts near you as you head north; Lu Xun will probably appear behind you and harass Guan Xing until he is wiped out. Unfortunately, Lu Meng will order you eliminated after you defeat Lu Xun, so beware of getting swarmed. After you eliminate Xu Sheng and Ma Zhong in the northeast, Zhang Bao will join you as reinforcements. Move on to Pan Zhang, and then to the center area to help out Guan Yu. His morale will probably be a little low so go directly to him and then just work your way south, as you don’t have to worry about the east obviously.
After a bit Cao Ren at your initial starting position, with Jiang Ji and Sun Li appearing far north of him. In fact they’ll probably be right on top of Guan Xing and Zhang Bao, but don’t worry about that. Take out Niu Jin, Man Chong, Zhu Ling, Jiang Qin and Zhu Ran. Cheng Pu should probably appear in the northwest by now, and Gan Ning in the south, with his sub-general Han Dang. Sounds like a lot? It is, but they’re relatively easy if you take them one by one. Especially with the better generals, like Gan Ning and Xu Huang and Lu Meng. You’ll probably defeat Gan Ning before his sub-general Han Dang appears, but don’t fret, you’re getting enough general kills here.
Once you take them out, head southeast (or wherever Cao Ren has moved to) and battle his sub-generals. Actually you’ll probably end up killing Cao Ren first, but that’s okay. You already got past the hard part, so enjoy your easy kill.
