Just an update on the RoTK style campaign, its more of a RoTK lite style game. You have to manage your kingdom's happiness, need to train, and need to take care of local threats(battles). So its not really much at all like RoTK, more like a rpg turn based strategy game. Seems like a nice campaign just pretty difficult at first.

The Three Kingdoms themed mod/campaign is more or less takes the style of the RoTK games that there's taxes, diplomacy, recruiting things like that. The game now has like 16 "mainline" campaigns and theres at least 10 to 15 user made ones that you can download.

Just in case anyone was curious, this turned out to be not so great. Very breakable and the bosses get ridiculous (they get to take a turn every time they're damaged). Not ridiculous enough to survive more than a few rounds...

Also, promising story turned out to be terrible.

So yeah, not worth it. Infinite Space and SMT Strange Journey will be better, no doubt about that.

I did start playing the SaGa 2 / Final Fantasy Legend 2 remake, and that's fantastic... just not in English yet

I noticed you post this one on the El Sallia forums, so I was surprised to see you post it here, since it's so dead around here.

I'm still around though! And maybe LYS is.

I've played a little of Wesnoth, but that was a few years ago - I'm sure it's far better now than it was when I tried it, so I'll have to check it out again. I think on CoES you said there was a Three Kingdoms themed mod/campaign?

The mention of free games reminds me though - my favorite indie game, The Spirit Engine 2, was just made freeware a couple weeks ago, and it's surely worth a try. http://www.thespiritengine.com/tse2-download.php

Given this is a pretty decent DS JRPG so far I figure there might be some interest here for it.

So far the story's sort of meh, but it looks like there could be some decent world-building in it somewhere. The teddy bear character is great, though

FFT was full of classic lines. The first two Suikoden's had some good ones too ("Returning from Dwarve's Village" - Kirkis).

Yea they 'fixed' the Dycedarg incident with the PSP translation. And then ruined the rest of the translation with their lame talk. It's good to fix errors but they change the whole scope of the game by changing the text (and in turn the character personalities).

You'd think by the time DW5 came along they wouldn't have typos but I guess they still come through..

I got the same problem (nobody else I know did, so this is the first I've seen it on someone else's machine).

Go into Edit Account (accounts -> aim -> edit account), then click on the Advanced tab and un-check "Use clientLogin". That fixed it for me.

Disabling SSL also works, but that might have side effects regarding security. That was the first thing I tried, but the Pidgin site recommends the clientLogin change.

Having all sorts of fun with comps lately, with my desktop lacking drivers (to run the internet, among other things) and other things happening with my laptop with the dreaded msacm32.dll missing / corrupted.

Yea the co-op factor was always sweet.

I like Mr. Grimm, his special is definitely awesome. It's just so hard to survive with those small riders because all it takes is one bad situation and that's one life (of three). This is especially true in Moscow and Holland where it's a small, confined area.

Minion is absurd. So fast, handles well and obviously can trample anyway. Sweet Tooth is the other guy I unlocked and he's not that great imo. Decent enough for a big vehicle and has good defense but like with Minion, there are no passwords. This is okay with Minion because you can beat almost all stages without dying but Sweet Tooth isn't good enough to do that (at least for me on Medium).

This was a good game, especially with the co-op campaign

I think Warthog's my favorite just because it's so all-round useful. Axel seems too cheap (since he destroys enemies just by running into them). The rest of the base set are fairly balanced - Mr Grimm is pretty squishy, but his Special is pretty powerful.

Knowing the hidden abilities makes the game even easier (although I can't remember any offhand, figuring the best ones out - shields for example - isn't too tough).

Axel's route was easy. Too easy maybe. He's the perfect balance for a strong, trample-type. Fast enough and the best handling I've had so far, thankfully.

Axel then meets his father and Axel proceeds to rip his own arms off the wheels in front of him. Then he "walks through the Kansas fields, never to be heard from again"..

Still, this game can be so cheap. They have no problem with re-spawning you right in the middle of 3-4 enemies Also, the enemies never do anything to each-other when you are far away (though to be fair sometimes the enemy will fall off the cliff but as far as damage, pretty much all of it needs to be done by you). One more thing that has been pissing me off - 3-5 enemies will be in a corner together yet all the shots end up coming my way. How ridiculous. I need to find the special move combos because all I know is freeze and barrier. One more thing, the handling is atrocious! Not going to lie though this game is addictive...

Bought this game the other day. $5.99 on PSN . Brings back lots of old memories. Lots of fun but I'm having a hell of a time just trying to complete the tournament on medium with Mr. Grimm. At the Holland battle with 9 enemies but it's too hard to avoid getting killed with him. Switched to Mr. Slam and it's a lot easier as my HP isn't gone in one skirmish like with Grimm

lol...classic name, always remember seeing this game at the video game store but never really got into it. Isn't this like first-person Might & Magic style?

I confuse this game with the Shining of the Holy Ark or whatever that Sega Saturn RPG was called...

Well Sega fans can say what they want. I might like the system more than SNES but I'm not going to say Sega was more successful - but Nintendo was still living off their NES work and no doubt had a carry over to their next console.

I don't think N64 really failed, that was one of the best times for video games with a 64 and the PSX. Worst thing you can say about 64 is that's about when the Nintendo franchise starting becoming first-party heavy which has been true for the Gamecube and Wii as well. Just no depth past the Mario and Zelda and Metroid offerings (Starfox, Mariokart, etc). 64 was short on RPG's, this is true, though Ocarina of Time was a legendary hybrid action/rpg and Ogre Battle 64 is considered one of the best games to a lot of a people (though to be fair I haven't played it much and it was back in 2000 when I did...)

Though I guess that stopped with the DS as it is littered with good third party games but as is the topic of this thread, somewhere along the way they decided to kiddify 90% of their DS games.

N64 was fine for me, but some take a glance at PSX sales and then insist that N64 failed because it sold much fewer. *shrugs* I personally think that it wasn't a failure, but I'm not everyone. Would've been better if they had more RPGs, though...

And yeah, I've seen sega fans insisting that the genesis won the 16-bit console wars.

Whaaaat. N64 a failure? By whom? I seem to remember people thinking it was the shit from about 96 to 2000-01. Likewise I don't remember anyone championing Genesis as the best system in it's time - most went with Super Nintendo though I have to say I have just as many good memories with Genesis. Shining Force II and Phantasy Star IV stand up to anything SNES has to offer, for me.

And now for some trivia...

The Genesis is generally considered a success.
The N64 is generally considered either a failure or at least subpar.
Yet the N64 sold more consoles than the Genesis.

Initial reviews seem mixed from what I've read. A friend imported this and I had a chance to play a bit during his quest, along with watching him. This probably is the best looking console game I've ever seen, though granted I haven't played many PS3 / Xbox360 games. Sound / music seem great, and evidently the story is something impressive as well. Obviously I can't understand that part not being able to read Japanese, but it's probably compelling enough to keep us interested. It seems the game is split up into sections for each main character.

But looking further, the game can be linear. No world map until the end when there is an area that is like 10x Calm Lands, and even that is limited. Not many side quests but to be fair those who have played it claim that despite being straight-forward, there is plenty to keep you busy. Died a few times and in general this game is going to be difficult, requiring you to grind quite a bit to get on the level of even regular enemies (many of which sound harder than some bosses, though boss battles look intense as well). The action is fast paced, a good reason for why it's difficult as when an enemy gets on you it's hard to recover in time (in addition to simply dwarfing you in terms of damage taken / dealt).

In summary, it's going to get a lot of people upset because it's more of a hybrid action / turn based rpg, and just takes out so many staples of RPG's (side quests, talking in villagers, having towns, upgrading weapons (there are upgrades but it's basically powering up the same weapons over and over). In turn this should open it up to a more mainstream crowd but may also turn them off with the difficulty. Certainly a different style for a Final Fantasy and it'll be interesting to see how it's received here. I'm still interested enough to get it though it's nothing like I thought it would be. As I'm fond of saying, "we'll see"...

*in a side note, read today that Strange Journey is going to be delayed a few weeks. Probably a good thing, not worth releasing right when FFXIII comes out. Smart idea.
