Lots of choices. And tough ones. Ultimately I enjoy the older versions. The Chronicles PS1 port is awesome and the GBA one has a nicer, more updated translation…but it’s additions were a little weak, though it was nice having all the characters at the end of the game. Still, someone was weird with the active battle system in FFIV GBA…
The DS version is an entirely new experience and one of the best remakes I’ve seen in a long time…still, I agree with Niahak and others in that it slowed down a lot towards the end and became much more tedious. The first half of the game was an amazing experience, so fresh for a remake…
I’ve had more memories with FFII on the SNES, playing that in the summer during the early 90’s…it was the first RPG I played that was multi-player (either SNES controller could control the characters). Looking back on it though, FFII SNES, the american version, is just too easy. The Hardtype version in Japan fixed this. The challenge was restored, easy bosses were now much harder despite not having anything different besides their attack, defense, HP, etc. Plus you had some neat new abilities to use with each character. So yea, tough to choose against the DS version but I enjoy the nostalgia of the original FFII / IV on SNES, specifically the JPN version.
