Hello all.
I am finally here for a shameless self promotion and other junk. I just finished the work I -originally- intended to complete for Destiny of an Emperor 2. It was almost 2 years since I had last worked on it, but whats-his-face talked me into finishing it back on October / November. (Sorry, my memory will return when I get some sleep.) Anyways, here's the link:
Meteorstrike's DoaE + NES stuff
WARNING: That host sucks, so you will probably have a hard time getting to all the stuff, especially if too many people try to access that site. Actually, to be fair, it's their free service. I like all that they offer except that their service sucks, and it worries me that if I actually paid for their service, it might still suck… I don't know…
Anyways, aside from that, you should find:
* – All the maps for the game, including World Map, Castles, Dungeons, even houses and stuff. I added 3 variety of maps, and there's 198 maps so 198 * 3 = 594 map files.
* – Generals info. Note that the Generals file is supposed to have all the Generals images, but because of this host, they won't all load. The server can't handle 255 png image requests, so you will likely never get the full html file with all the pics… the download also times out sometimes while downloading maps and you have to refresh… sucks…
* – Tactics list, Boss Battles list, Items list, Dropped Items, Treasure Chests and Hidden Items, and some other Generals info tables.
Of course, it was all auto-generated after making the tool, so needless to say, I didn't actually spend 100 years of my life writing out all those html files. :p But it's nice that they are auto-generated because that negates the possibility of error.
I promised LastKnight (ah, my memory returns… or does it…) that I would give him some complete map format details, but I will have to leave that for next year. Yep, a whole year! Well, a whole day at least… :p I need to port the map generator to DOAE 1 before I am willing to share the details. ( I kind of have to as a prerequisite to completing all the data. )
The neat thing is that now that I have a kick-ass interactive map generator for DOAE 2, it should be easy to port to DOAE 1 since the maps are almost identical in format. Just need to plug in the actual addresses, etc. and the "devil in the details" exceptions and other stuff… When I'm done, I might make a youtube video showcasing the generator. I wouldn't mind releasing it, but only if I port it to C++ first, and I think that might be a while… the time I could spend doing that, I usually just spend hacking something else… sorry! ^_^'
Also… what's with all the apologetic e-mails I've been getting? I mean every time one of you guys sends me an e-mail, it's like… "hey, sorry to bother you…" WTF? Do I have a reputation for being a hard-ass or something? I mean seriously, since when does the Emperor apologize to the Oracle? :)
I also promised whats-his-other-face (there goes my memory again…) that I would share the walk-thru walls code for DOAE 2, so here are the codes I used. Let me know if they don't work since I'm reading them off my laptop and I might make a mistake.

Now… for the more interesting question I've been DYING to ask for the past 2 years… WTF is with the HUO-HU-WHATS-HIS-FACE reference? Can someone give me the back story on that? I don't get it… the only thing I figure out of it is that the "powder" might refer to cocaine or something… How did that reference even originate anyway?
And another thing… do you guys realize that if you guys had combined all your efforts in hacking this game for the past x-number of years, you guys could have made your own DOAE style game from scratch using SDL or something? I mean darn… Seriously, I think you guys would feel a LOT better if you did that. It gives you much more flexibility and control over what you can do in your own game, and you get a lot more bragging rights. It also has some programmatic merit to it… Sorry for the tough-love approach, but not too many people care about 1980s game hacking stuff… yea, I know, the same is true for me, although I've contemplated this plenty of times and it sometimes frustrates me to no end that I can't put down the debugger…
And another thing… how do I change my avatar? I put all this effort into making one… and now I can't? :S
And… I think that's it for now… I'll come back when I think of more things to rant about… most importantly though, I might not be around for a while, so don't get all apologetic when I don't reply to posts… I might not even see them. I come and go like the wind… and once in a while, I might land on the ocean and make a huge wave… just like a real meteor! :p

Re: map generation stuff, I have a tool in place for editing them… shouldn't be too hard to make a few modifications to that tool based on new information.

I find reverse-engineering old stuff kind of fascinating, and I think there's some value to others in it too.

There were times in the "Meteorstrike" thread at Gamefaqs for DoaE where you seem annoyed by all of Xuande's questions so I think we're just all trying to show our gratitude for your knowledge (and your time).

His powder reference in stock DoaE was always amusing to me and he was an underrated character. Plus, we started hacking DoaE because we wanted to build a quest around Huo Hu, the Song Bro's, Yang Jin and all those other generic officers (that weren't even real in the Han Dynasty era).

For me though, I don't do it to make my e-penis bigger or for a programming challenge. I do it because I loved Destiny of an Emperor since I was 5 years old, it's a hell of an RPG ahead of it's time…Ultimately, I could care less about re-creating a similar game (Destiny of an Emperor 3 for the Genesis is a fan-made game with it's own system (albeit stolen from FF) and it never impressed me much).
Maybe we'd garner a marginal amount of respect by creating our own DoaE like game, but either way I don't think we'd get a significant amount of notoriety for it (or through hacking stock DoaE like we have been).

Just know anytime you bless us with your presence and especially with DoaE knowledge, we are eternally grateful huohu . DoaE seems like just another fish in the water for your hacking exploits but your work will never go under-appreciated here.

Love the Dragon Warrior IV poker cards randomly generating on your page. Gambling in that game was great and hoarding Metal Babble Shields. The only NES RPG that can hold a candle to DoaE (DWIV is probably the best NES game if I looked at it objectively – it's basically a SNES quality RPG).
Meteorstrike – Also upgraded your permissions here and you should be able to do what you wish…

BTW, the random poker thing is not random. It's actually a page hit counter. It's on a Base-14 number system to coincide with the 14 possible numbers ( 2 – Ace + Joker ). The only random factor there is that the suit of the cards are random, but the actual card value is in series, eg:
2-2-2, 2-2-3, 2-2-4 … 2-2-K, 2-2-A, 2-2-Joker, 2-3-2, 2-3-3, etc. I actually had that idea years ago, and 000space lets you upload php, so I made a php page hit counter custom script.
Also, I think you guys think waaay too highly of me. I mean seriously, NES hacking is not that hard, especially when you get the hang of it. I might have a little bit of an advantage over some of you since I code for a living, but NES assembly is hardly the most difficult thing. I know I sound a little arrogant sometimes in my posts, but I'm really not, ( it's not really arrogance so much as it's over-excitement at getting some of these nifty things working :) ) and this kind of work is not hard at all when you get the hang of it. You'll see that after a while, you guys will get to be just as good at it. But hey, as long as your opinion about me gets me some perks on the message boards, I certainly wouldn't mind that! :)
Niahak, when I finish the DOAE 1 generator, I'll post some of the details so you can add them to your generator. Brace yourself though, because if you want to make a -good- map editor, it's going to cost you a few headaches…. you'll see… (*evil laugh*) Although I'm about ready for a little DOAE hacking break…

MiDKnighT is becoming adept at assembly but I believe DoaE I is his first excursion with it. I'm just a simple internet marketer, coding is not my forte' certainly huohu …. I will say though that just dealing with DoaE in hex the last few months I've learned a lot about how it works, what to expect looking for things, etc. That said I have no clue as to how we use fce ultra debug to find shit in the hex…

Just looking through and seeing which of the hidden items I knew about. I have DoaE I's memorized but not quite with DoaE II. I've looked through a ton though and don't want to use too much bandwidth.

January 1, 2012 at 4:13 am #41666MeteorStrikeParticipantHey, don't worry about bandwidth usage. It's supposed to be unlimited bandwidth, even with their free service. The lag problems are ( most likely ) due to the number of servers they use for the free service. I actually like 000space. Even for the free stuff they offer, it's freaking amazing. My only complaint is the lag, but hey, it's free… I might consider testing out a paid account for a while and see if it's worth the money. I hope they accept paypal. But that said, you might get timeouts and "bandwidth restrictions" if there are too many requests at a time. Aside from that though, I believe you should be able to hit the site without restrictions.
Oh, and hey DragonAtma. The politeness doesn't bother me, but the over-politeness makes me feel a little awkward at times, because it makes me feel like people think I'm a **** and that they have to tippy-toe around me to avoid upsetting me. I don't like to have to tippy-toe around other people either. The other day, I met a stripper at a club and she got upset about a discussion we had. I didn't even say anything that should have upset her. I mean WTF? Those strippers can be so sensitive! So I know what it feels like to be on that other side of having to watch out for other people's feelings at every little thing I say, and that can be so annoying…
The other thing that makes me feel a little awkward is over-appreciation. Ever watched the movie Crush? Well, think of it like that, but instead of a hot girl with a crush on you, it's a bunch of guys from a ROM site. Yikes! I don't deserve that kind of attention and appreciation, so it feels creepy like that. But, if any of you IS a hot girl that just loves the DOAE work I do, then hey, by all means! ;)
January 1, 2012 at 4:40 am #41667Zhuge LiangParticipantHey welcome MeteorStrike, you may not know how long we've been waiting for you to come here, posting stuffs related to DoaE2 hacking and I'm glad that you still recall your promise of posting some Genie codes for me, those are awesome codes that you have. I'm still at the early stage of discovering debugger, only able to write some infinite hit points codes for some simple games so writing these codes above would be nearly impossible for me right now. I'm currently playing DoaE2 Wei and Wu mod again so your codes will be useful to avoid some situations I'd rather not get involved :P
All I can say is, well, to hope you enjoy your time here. Having you by our side will be a big advantage for us to dig deeper into DoaE world hacking, so to speak.

I wasn't aware there was a mod out there for DOAE 2. Just to be clear, the codes I posted are for DOAE 2, with the translated patch from Magic Destiny, and by "DOAE 2", I mean the actual Destiny of an Emperor 2 game, not DOAE 1 "version 2.0" or anything like that… Just want to make sure we are talking about the same game here, because as far as I know, I am not aware of any DOAE 2 hacks out there other than the translation patches. :)
January 1, 2012 at 5:21 am #41669Zhuge LiangParticipantHey don't worry about that, since you didn't know anything about the two versions Wei and Wu mod, I will tell you a bit information. It appears that these two were made quite a long time ago, but instead of playing with Liu Bei in the original version, you will control Cao Cao and Sun Jian in Wei and Wu respectively. And too bad that these two use the japanese language so I think that's the main reason why they didn't become popular like the original did. A number of things also changed compared with the original, but it didn't mind one bit for us, the DoaE lovers. A senior member of LYS forum named Samuel completed these two a long time ago and wrote guides for them too. In case you worry whether those Genie codes you shared would work effectively or not in these two mods, I just tested them out minutes ago and they worked out perfectly, so don't worry about it :-)
