ParticipantHimmm, maybe that’s true, maybe the levels are based from the first DOAE…

ParticipantNo pictures? Shame on you guys.
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby

Some day, I hope to get this and the DOAE3’s on Kongming.net (GameFAQs would be nice, but…) so they can get some more publicity and maybe even some rough translations.
Well how about it? I?m having fun with these playguides.
Gotta start somewhere, so let?s figure out the menus. I?ve sent some queries out to some people who have helped me with translations in the past (including the recent translations) so we?ll see what turns up. For now, from playing the game, can anyone help figure out the menus below?
Some are obvious. It was easy to figure out how to save. I had a little more trouble figuring out how to equip the Copper Sword you start with. And others would be tough to guess through gameplay alone, like the game options. When we?re set, though, we?ll have an English translation of all the menus.
Main Menu

Status Screen?

Gear Management

Game Options?

ModeratorMain menu, from top stuff down:
Very top, the top entry indicates your commanding general, the second indicates your strategist.
The two values in the mid top are Money and Soldiers.
The entries you can use in the menu are (top to bottom, left to right)
Commander
Equip
Status
Map
Items
Advice (? – haven’t gotten a strategist yet in my game)
Save
Settings
Gear Management:
(Top says "Which item to remove?" :P )
The categories are:
Weapon
Armor
Shield
Helmet
Special Equip.
Options: (top says "Game settings")
Message Speed (Slow, Normal, Fast)
Sound Setting (Sound On, No Sound)
Finish
I’m trying to translate some of the dialogue and little stuff in my guide, but I didn’t notice I completely forgot the menus…

ParticipantAnd with that wonderful info, we are underway!
Main Menu

What?s that under the party level? :)
November 9, 2006 at 4:56 am #20049Niahak
ModeratorIt says "Wise Man" or "Sage". I have no idea why. It could refer to a class-like idea (Liu Bei’s type?) but I can’t change my leader yet so I can’t check.
I actually screwed up on ひさく (third down on the left)- I should’ve realized it says "Tactics" rather than "Status" from what it does. Sorry about that.

ParticipantOkay, I started translating all the necessary screenshots for the guide.
(I suspect there will be more, but I haven?t even really started playing.)
Any translation of the screenshots below would be helpful!
To avoid missing anything, I have listed all the so-called objectives.
If anyone wants any other screen translated, please do make mention!
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Main Menu (Complete)

Game Menu (Complete)

Game Settings (Complete)

Status Screen (Work Required)

1) Translation of the values on the left-hand side.
2) Translation of the ‘0’ value under ‘SP’
Equipment Management (Work Required)

1) Translation of text label left of the 10-10-10 values.
2) Translation of titles above the 10-10-10 values.
3) Translation of the two entries in the bottom-right-hand box.
Item Shop (Incomplete)

1) Translation of text label above HP/SP.
2) What the heck are the HP/SP values? 0]? What is that for?
3) Discover purpose of the Lower Drug, Protect Talisman, and Stone.
Equipment Shop (Incomplete)

1) Translation of the text label below ‘HAVE’ with a ‘0’ value.
Inn (Complete)

Battle Menu (Incomplete)

1) Translation of title at top of battle screen.
2) Translation and purpose of value below ‘Battle’. Listed by Niahak as ‘Soldier’s Choice’.
Battle Sub-Menu (Work Required)

1) Translation of the three missing values.
Bottom right one does something and takes a turn, but it doesn’t seem to be defend.
One is, no doubt, an option to use tactics.

ModeratorStatus screen:
Values on lefthand are:
Power
Intelligence
Speed
Defense
0 value is Experience
Equipment Management:
Left of 10-10-10 is Liu Bei.
Above 10-10-10 are Power, Defense, Speed
Two entries in bottom right box seem to be "Stone" and "Jewel". If you select Special Equip you can choose between them but neither seems to do anything.
Item Shop:
Label above HP/SP is "Current Medicine Inventory". The HP/SP ones indicate restorative items of each type.
I haven’t had enough spare money to check and see what those others do, so I have to get further, I guess.
Equipment Shop:
Part below "Have" is Armor. I think these are general numbers of weapons and armor you have, not specific to a certain item type.
Battle Menu:
Title at top is "Soldiers". Once you get some soldiers on your side, this affects the "Soldiers’ Choice" item (which would probably be "Charge" – this is a battle between your soldiers and theirs, with no influence from generals). I’m not sure if the All-out label is correct as you need a strategist to actually use it…
Battle Sub-Menu:
Bottom left is Tactics, Top right is Items, Bottom right is actually Defend (I still don’t understand how damage is really determined).

ParticipantWell, it is done! With great help from Nihak, a full collection of English-translated screenshots and a quick-start guide to take people (mostly those unfamiliar with the game) to the point where Guan Yu and Zhang Fei join your party. That?s it for this little section, and I?ll be able to do a lot more if Nihak or someone else takes up the project of creating a walkthrough. :)

ModeratorAwesome work! It looks great. Good job on renaming the towns, too, I just haven’t opened my copy of Three Kingdoms in a few months (sad… but I plan to rectify it soon) so I didn’t remember in what order they might appear.
I plan to continue the walkthrough eventually, but it’s the weekend before Finals Week and work’s been piling up for a while. Most of my free time I’ve been spending unwinding with FFXII because it involves less thought. I’ll probably resurrect the walkthrough next week.
Or I might take a stab at hacking the actual ROM, some of the abbreviations you’ve been using give me some ideas about how to fix the issues that crop up with that.

ParticipantI would like to start working on translating this game. It is the only DOAE I have yet to finish and I am getting frustrated with trying to remember what each menu item/enemy/town/officer is. What kind of software did you use to change that text Xian Zhu Xuande? Naihak would you be willing to pick up this old game again to maybe help me with bits of it? I know almost no Japanese but I can at least make an attempt to put out patches for what I can determine to be accurate translations to the best of my ability and background knowledge of ROTK.

ModeratorTechnically it's possible to translate japanese even if you don't know it… it's a pain in the tail, though.
Then, once you've transliterated it, you can use an online translator top get a rough translation.
As for kanji, there's this site. Just keep in mind that kanji can be weird. The rightmost character of their logo (書), for example, LOOKS like it should be 12 strokes but is actually 10 strokes.

ModeratorI suppose it could happen, but not for a couple weeks. :/ If you're talking about maybe just menus and officers, that *might* not be too bad to do… you'd want to look up some docs here though.
December 20, 2010 at 5:57 am #20057Sirazrael
ParticipantI'm not looking for an immediate translation, I figure it'll be a casual project since we all have other lives (I imagine). I've got some experience in ROM hacking, but I can't find a suitable program that lets me decode GB games so I guess that's my first place to start. Menus would be the first coding place to start, anyone having an interest in even picking up the game will want to know what it is they initially are doing at the very minimum. Most officers I can figure out just by the photo since this uses many DOAE2 images and not the more generic officer photos of DOAE. I appreciate any help those of you with more experience are willing to provide. Maybe with enough time we can make this one stand out a bit more than it has. It may not have all of the flairs DOAE2 has, but it is part of the series and to me that makes it worthy enough to at least give it a shot at. As far as my current progress in the game, I am just slightly past Niahak's english play guide, which is less than a quarter of the game I imagine. The translation bits that Xian Zhu Xuande and Niahak did 4 years ago are a great start, we just need to recompile that and I think that will help several other pieces fall into place.

KeymasterDamn, four years ago. That's about how late you are here lol. Now we're all busy with our lives, DoaE hacking has stalled.
That said it would be cool to have this translated, even just the menus. Maybe I'd play it (to be honest though I really haven't played any GB games in my life, it's kind of strange). We'll see, maybe Niahak will get really bored some day :huohu:
