ParticipantThat would certainly take some of the load off of Niahak, lol. I can't really read Japanese (I'm still learning basic speak) but I can certainly reasonably deduct what most things are given that I have a graphical interface in which to deduce from.

ModeratorIf all you're looking for is spot translations (like the stuff James put together) that's no problem, I can turn those around quickly. If you're looking for a whole script translation… that'll take a bit longer.
It wouldn't take much at all (relatively) to put together a hack that translates the menus and at least the major characters. I just don't have the patience to re-learn all that stuff for GB.

ParticipantI think a basic program slightly better than the simple hex editor I'm trying to use would be much better. I'm having a lot of trouble trying to figure out which code goes to which characters and then change them in a manner so that they don't wrap or scramble.

ParticipantI gotta be honest here, I'm making absolutely no progress on this whatsoever. I've spent some time trying to pick apart the rom with a hex editor but it's nothing like translating from another language that's NOT character based (German, Spanish, etc). Anybody else have any luck?

ModeratorWell, I'd guess based on the little experience I have that there would still be character codes – at least for the kana character sets.
Traditionally it's ordered a-i-u-e-o, see the table here (look at the left side).

Don't worry about the digraphs on the right for now, or the dakuten/handakuten. For now you'd like to have the script in front of you in the hex editor, right? You might try doing a relative search based on the hiragana table and some sample text.
For a simple example, the intro to the game starts with taminotameni (たみのために). If you take the hiragana table, you can figure out what the relative order of those would be, starting at a (あ) as your 0 point. For example, た (ta) would be 15, and み would be 31. You could try relative searching for 153124153321 and see where (if at all) that pops up.
This document describes it in more detail than I can: http://www.romhacking.net/docs/tabdef.txt

KeymasterLink they are talking about Destiny of an Emperor GB.
Go go go go go Siz. Good luck with the trial and error editing. I'm sure once you understand it a little it will allow you to make at least some subtle changes.
