Best deal on Dragon Quest IX DS (JP) thanks to Play Asia
Pretty cool. VIII's battle gameplay was third person like this too right?

You should try it!
Looking forward to DQ9… the DQ series has always been the most reliable so at least I know more or less what I’ll be getting ;)
August 16, 2009 at 5:46 am #36013Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterFrom what I've read, it sounds bad.
For one, look at Amazon's reviews (amazon.jp). It's TERRIBLE… a 3 star rating, but so many poor ratings. I was reading a forum (gbatemp I think) where they were translating some of these reviews. Many of them come back to the point that this game was catered to the kiddies….. Here's the money shot…
"Not targeted at the traditional DQ fan
It's extremely simple and easy to advance in the game
It seems like this DQ was expected to draw in the Pokemon
demographic, so they concentrated more on elementary school students
rather than DQ fans.
Even in terms of characters
you're always followed by a character named Sandy,
who talks and acts like a ganguro and is really annoying.
This is just my opinion but I feel that she destroys the image that's been built up for
the DQ series. I wonder if this kind of character appeals to children? I have no idea.
I guess pre-adolescent kids with no preconceived notions of DQ would enjoy this. "
I'm sure I'll enjoy this game, I'm already playing the JPN version a little bit, but I probably will be agreeing with these sentiments once I can actually understand the game / story…

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingAugust 16, 2009 at 2:18 pm #36014NiahakModeratorOh wow, that's disappointing.
It sounded like the game changed a lot from conception to release.
A 3-star rating is so, so bad for any Dragon Quest game in Japan. I was hoping it would live up to Famitsu's 40/40 rating, but given they gave the same to FFXII… I guess they just give those out for free on the big-name titles.
August 16, 2009 at 4:10 pm #36015Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterI think it's the whole Square-Enix thing. You know Enix from the 80's and 90's would never have this happen…
Yea I don't know about Famitsu. Sometimes their reviews seem relevant but I'm sure the bigger ticket items get a bit of a boost. Still, there are literally hundreds more 2 and 1 star reviews of the game than there are 5 star reviews…you'd think Famitsu would portray how this game has been received in Japan but I guess not.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJuly 13, 2010 at 1:00 am #36016Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterOkay despite my opinions of the game above, still got the english version of it (been out for a few days). It will likely put a break to DoaE ventures for a while; popular enough game here to warrant a walkthrough for it.
On a side note, how shitty is the search function for bbpress? I searched "Dragon Quest", "Dragon Quest IX", and this post doesn't show up anywhere in the results (although this is the only thread on Dragon Quest IX). Too bad their security was terrible, phpbb3 was definitely better as far as features and things like that

You'd think they'd have more sense than to include Navi.
July 16, 2010 at 5:59 pm #36018Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterhaha 'Sandy'. The ganguro. I've definitely already become annoyed with this little girl that just ruins the mood of the game. Again, like the review above said, I guess this appeals to kids? Her name in the game is Stella by the way.
You just wonder why they have to include her? Not even just her but a character in her position at all, one who basically repeats what is going on and the basic things you learn? Another sign of the times though. I remember when games would start up and drop you in a world and then you figure out what the fuck is going on. Everything is spoon fed now and by the most annoying personalities…
I'm only about 4 hours into the game, enjoying it now that I can understand the plot… Again, a little easy and annoying at some parts but it has piqued my interest enough.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJuly 17, 2010 at 3:49 am #36020NiahakModeratorFor some reason I'm reminded of Luc in Suikoden 2 if you bring him along to Greenhill for the academy stuff.
Everyone splits off to find the "hidden switch", everyone looking at the walls instead of the one actual thing in the room (statue). If you talk to Luc, he says "This is so sad."
From the picture up there, without context, it looks like Stella is saying "mystery knight" looks like your character. Which is pretty damn sad ;)
August 4, 2010 at 1:48 am #36021CommieCatGirlParticipantIs this game worth my money? I kind to want to pray something on my thumb-murdering DS lite
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby
August 4, 2010 at 2:32 am #36022NiahakModeratorI've actually really been enjoying it, disregard any complaints I have above (I was young, foolish, and didn't have the game yet). It doesn't even have the standard Square Enix markup (it's $35 rather than $40 or more for e.g. FF4).
I bought it about a week and a half ago, I've played about 25 hours already. I'd guess I'm a little more than halfway through the plot.
Stella is annoying, but she's really the only complaint I have about the game (and some of her idiom slip-ups are entertaining). It's light on plot, but there's a ton of variability in grinding / alchemy that you can exploit if you like. I never thought I'd enjoy grinding so much, but those goddamn metal slimes are like crack.
I even went to one of the "live" events (Gamestop's) last week. Got a free T-shirt, poster, and 11 levels on my main character from some co-op play.
August 4, 2010 at 3:10 am #36023Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYea I too have to admit I am enjoying it a lot more than I thought. The beginning is annoying for me, that was about it; plot heavy, too much Stella and the early fighting is weak (you only fight 2 guys max for a few hours).
And it can be kind of repetitive in terms of the plot – go to new village, learn about their problem, go to nearby cave / dungeon / etc to fight a boss, come back to village to reap rewards, and continue on doing the same thing everywhere.
But like Niahak says there is so much extra stuff that can be done in the mean time that it doesn't seem that repetitive at all. The quests are an amusing sidequest and switching vocations is necessary and keeps the game fresh.
Quote:I even went to one of the "live" events (Gamestop's) last week. Some local Gamestop in Minneapolis must have done that, I should have looked into it. oh well.

I'm pretty sure it's one of the few decent more modern games that sees fit to just drop you off at some town, give you some vague orders and then tells you to screw off.
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby
August 4, 2010 at 8:37 pm #36025Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYea Morrowind was fun for a bit. I was thinking more JRPG types rather than Western RPG's which aren't really my cup of tea though late 90's Elder Scrolls games always sounded interesting.
Been doing some leveling today with the Paladin and Armamentalist classes. Armamentalist is like a Mage but with a little higher attack and less potent magic spells (pretty shitty, at least at this early juncture). The Paladin is neat though and a good quest for a Priest to take (Kind of like the Armamentalist in that they are stronger than the Priest class but lacking as far as magic spells).
Doing some quests too and the Gold Golem + Hocus Chimaera Feather quests are driving me nuts, with their random drop / event stuff. Especially considering the rewards for them are middling at best.
