On a positive note, even if this exp/gold thing cannot be figured out, perhaps it opens the game up for a much less linear map/story? Think Dragon Warrior 1. You could theoretically go anywhere, but things were a heck of a lot tougher other places. That would certainly be extremely hard to balance, but could be a whole lot of fun!

– Number of soldiers fought
– Type of force fought (rebel force, bandit force, etc…)
– Chapter where you are fighting (example: chapter 1 is Xu Zhou area). The higher the chapter, the more you get in exp/gold.
– You only get provisions for castle/gate/fortress battles. Ie…battles with an ID number. I haven't even started looking at that yet…
Now to answer your question more directly… In the Xu Zhou area you get 1-2 exp for each bandit force unit you fight (100-140 enemies). But in the Yuan Shao area you get 5-7 exp for each bandit force you fight (100-140 enemies). In the Xu Zhou area you get 4-5 gold for each bandit force you fight (100-140 enemies). But in the Yuan Shao area you get somewhere around 30-35 gold for each bandit force you fight (100-140 enemies).
Other things I have found out so far:
– Gold/experience is given out per enemy unit. Each unit gives you some exp/gold then after the battle it adds up all the exp/gold of the enemy units to give a final number.
– The amount of experience per unit adds up nicely to a final number. The amount of gold does not add up. It looks like you get some percentage of some maximum gold number per enemy (this happens in Dragon Warrior too from what I've read).

That would certainly be extremely hard to balance, but could be a whole lot of fun!If we can't figure out the gold/experience thing (and I still have hope that we can) there would be 3 possible ways of dealing with it:
1) Keep the chapter/region areas the same. Ie…still start in the Xu Zhou area but you can edit the map all you want and move battles and castles around. The game would look a a lot different but the major areas/chapters on the world map would still be in the same order.
or
2) What you alluded too, drastically increase the number of soldiers fought in lower chapter areas. For example if you go from chapter 1 (Yuan Shao area) to chapter 2 (Xu Zhou area) you would have to drastically increase the number of soldiers fought in the Xu Zhou area to keep it somewhat balanced. But it would be a lot…like 4-5 times more soldiers fought.
or
3) Leave it unbalanced… In some chapters you'll be able to level up and accumulate gold. In some areas (lower chapter areas) you won't be able to gain much gold and experience.
August 3, 2010 at 5:00 pm #38178MiDKnighTModeratorOK trying a different approach. Found that the chapter number you are in is put into $6026. This is added when you enter a battle. The value assigned depends on where you are in the map. In the Xu Zhou area this is "01", in the Yuan Shao area it is "04", etc… When you enter a battle it is assigned via this instruction:
00:B301:AD 26 60 LDA $6026 = #$04
Where #$04 is the chapter number. Chapter numbers are:
01=Yellow Turbans
02=Dong Zhuo
03=Yuan Shu
04=Yuan Shao
05=Jingzhou
06=Shu
07=Wu
08=Wei
So if we could switch the order around on this table we are golden. But still looking into how to do that…

It was very tough but I finally got it. After using FCE Ultra and trace logging everything when a battle is started, finally pieced together how it was getting the 'chapter' information. I'll save you the gory details but the main point is this… It looks like it starts at around 0x37e00:
0000 0000 0000 0000 4444 1111 0000 0000
0000 4444 4441 1111 0000 0000 0444 4444
4411 1111 0000 0000 4433 3222 2211 1111
0000 0000 4433 3222 2221 1111 0000 0000
0443 3332 2222 1111 0000 0000 0443 3338
8888 8888 8800 0006 6655 3333 8888 8888
8800 0066 6655 5333 8888 8888 8800 0066
6655 5555 5888 8888 8800 0066 6555 5555
5778 8888 8800 0066 6555 5555 5778 7788
8800 0006 6666 5555 5777 7788 8800 0066
6666 6555 5777 7788 8800 0066 6666 7777
7777 7700 0000 0066 6666 7777 7777 7700
0000 0066 6666 7777 7777 7700 0000 0000
0000 7777 7777 7700 0000 0000 0000 7777
7777 7700 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000
Each number represents a chapter number (0-8). The chapter numbers are like I posted before:
0=No Random Encounters
1=Yellow Turbans
2=Dong Zhuo
3=Yuan Shu
4=Yuan Shao
5=Jingzhou
6=Shu
7=Wu
8=Wei
Each number corresponds to a 'zone' on the map. As far as I can tell they are sorted by VERT-HORIZ. Want to change the Chapter 1 Xu Zhou area to be Chapter 8 (Wei)? Simply change all 1's to 8's in the above section. Knowledge of how the zones are layed out (or when we can sort zones by VERT-HORIZ or HORIZ-VERT in the tool) will allow us to *customize* enemy areas. Maybe the snow area will no longer be just chapter 4. Maybe it will be chapter 2 on the west side and chapter 3 on the east side. Or maybe you can break Wei up into separate chapters… Now the possibilities for a customized map with customized enemy areas should be wide open.
The only concern I would still have with moving things around is 'events'. Things that happen in the game after certain battles or events. But as I play around with moving castles, battles, etc… I'll address those issues when I run into them.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingAugust 5, 2010 at 4:27 pm #38182DragonAtmaModerator…if we're doing that, can we add zone 9 (Sima Yi) to the map?
August 5, 2010 at 6:05 pm #38183MiDKnighTModeratorQuote:…if we're doing that, can we add zone 9 (Sima Yi) to the map?There is no chapter 9. Sima Yi is still Wei (chapter 8). However, if you wanted to break Wei up into 2 chapters you'd just have to consolidate 2 other chapters. For example, make Dong Zhou and Yuan Shu *both* chapter 2, then move all the other chapters down 1, then you have chapters 7 and 8 for Wei.
You can't have more than 8 chapters unless you are a rom hacking God. Everything is built around having 8 chapters.
August 5, 2010 at 7:34 pm #38184DragonAtmaModeratorThat's too bad; it feels as if Sima Yi should have his own chapter.
August 5, 2010 at 7:47 pm #38185cabalpapaParticipantThe problem I see with this mapping (and I might be wrong) is that if we start changing the map, it really must conform within those shaded areas or else the random encounters will occur from other chapters. Is that correct? Are these zones/areas adjustable, so that we can make them adapt in shape and size according to our newly designed map?

The only restriction is that you can't have more than 1 chapter per "zone" (there are 270ish zones on the world map). Here's a pic of the hex (in a map layout form) of the Xu Zhou area (chapter 1) and all areas west of it:
000000000000004444111100
000000000044444441111100
000000044444444411111100
000000443332222211111100
000000443332222221111100
000000044333322222111100
This is actually how the chapters look in the game. The 4's are the Yuan Shao area, the 1's are the Xu Zhou area, the 2's are the Dong Zhou area, etc…
Let's say you wanted to expand the Xu Zhou area west and make it bigger. You could do this:
000000000000004441111100
000000000044444411111100
000000044444441111111100
000000443332211111111100
000000443332211111111100
000000044333322111111100
So the 1's have moved west some. Of course you'd also have to change the map to correlate with that so that you can't wander between chapters 1 and 4.
The bottom line is that with the map editing tool (thanks to Niahak) and this chapter/zone knowledge you could make an entirely new map with custom chapter areas. That would be a lot of work though. Here are all the steps involved:
– Edit the map using the tool.
– Change the chapters to correlate with the map if necessary using the info I recently posted.
– Edit the warps for the castles, fortresses, etc… so that the castles correlate with their locations on the map. Instructions are in this thread, hopefully will be incorporated into the tool eventually.
– Edit the battle locations. Instructions are in this thread, hopefully will be incorporated into the tool eventually.

But after Sima Yi kills off Cao Pi, you are still fighting "Wei" bad guys. The same guys you were fighting when Cao Pi was in charge. So Cao Pi and Sima Yi are both chapter 8.
