I guess I should obtain one and play it in a very legal manner.
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby

September 19, 2007 at 8:42 pm #24369CommieCatGirlParticipantHmm, is the original one on the Playstation?

September 19, 2007 at 9:25 pm #24372Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterNo, not a lot of grinding. Generally the series is pretty easy although 2 has some tough parts. I think you’d like it just because there are a lot of characters in there and it’s a decent story – the game flows really well.

Also play Suikoden before Suikoden 2 for MAXIMUM AWESOMENESS
May 22, 2009 at 4:51 pm #24376TimbukiParticipantI have never played a Suikoden game and have been thinking about trying them out lately. My question is, do you need to play the first two games before the later ones or does it matter? I can get copies of 3, 4, and 5 fairly easily here in town, and for a decent price, but 1 and 2 are a bit more pricey. 1 is on the PSN and I may try that route for that game but I’m not ready to drop $100+ on 2 at this point in time. I would like to play the PS2 games though if you don’t have to know the stories or anything from the previous 2 games.

May 22, 2009 at 6:47 pm #24381Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterWell no, I don’t think it matters too much whether or not you play them in chronological order. I do think the PS1 Suikoden’s (1 and 2) are the best though. Definitely get 1 through PSN, because you’re right, 1 and 2 are a fortune to buy the ps1 copies. I’m sure at some point there will be a way to play 2 on PSN as well.
But yea, so you should be fine playing 3-5 or Tierkreis for DS. Tierkreis is a Suikoden with characters / story completely independent from the others, but 1-5 are tied together. Whether you jump into it with 1 or 3 or 5, it shouldn’t matter since it’s all new to you anyway. Considering your options I would play 1-3-5-4, in that order. If you don’t have a way to play PSN games, then 3 would be a good start to the series I think. The trinity sight system flows well (three heroes instead of one like most Suikoden’s).
As far as length, 1 is about 15-20 hours, 2 is about 20-30 hours, 3 is 50-70 hours, 4 is 30-40 hours and 5 is probably 70+ hours. That’s all assuming you complete most of the story / optional stuff, since there is a ton of optional stuff to do as far as recruiting all the stars, etc.
