You know, it probably wouldn't be too hard to do this skill-learning process:
(1) Make a chart of tactic learning levels (FF = doesn't learn, or technically, learns at level 255, which we won't reach!). Presumably there'll be a good twenty or thirty tactic learning types.
(2) Assign a tactic style (fire tactics early for Zhou Yu, offensive tactics only for Zhang Fei, no tactics ever for Liu Shan, etc.) for each officer.
(3) Replace the "does officer X have the int needed to learn tactic Y at level Z" code with "check if officer X learns any tactics at Z", as presumably the Song Yongs of the game get the "no tactics learned ever" progression.
Then, every officer would have their own list of tactics learned at specific levels.

May 22, 2012 at 6:31 pm #41319DragonAtmaModeratorAha, I somehow missed that (sorry Lud).
May 22, 2012 at 6:58 pm #41320sonic.penguinModeratorEssentially, it works like, if officer has 150 INT, they learn Lian Huo, but if they have 180 int, they learn Lian Huo, but later on they learn Ye Huo, while the 150 guys is still stuck with Lian Huo. It does allow for some diversity in tactics among officers and allows you to have multiple levels of curing tactics, offensive tactics, etc.
In the rise of Lu Bu mod, this coding allows Lu Bu an exclusive tactic unavailable to anyone else, and essentially I made it so lower INT officers get their own unique string of specialized attacks: Musou and Slayer or two examples I made up… give it a try <coughs> plug <coughs>
May 23, 2012 at 12:45 pm #41321MiDKnighTModeratorI have a request for Lud that I'll e-mail him about.
He's hacked FF1 and he's hacked DOAE. One of the most annoying things about DOAE is when you have to upgrade weapons, armor, helmet and you have to deal with the cumbersome menu to equip, etc… FF1 really beat DOAE on the whole equip/packs thing. No idea if this is possible but Lud would probably know… What would be cool is for DOAE to have:
– Shared packs (like FF1)
– Borrow the FF1 equip screen for DOAE (although there would have to be room for 7 guys).
– Have the option to equip:
— Weapon
— Armor
— Helmet
— Chi tu ma/horse
I'd imagine that would be tough to do but since Lud has hacked both games he'd probably know how difficult it would be.
May 23, 2012 at 1:50 pm #41322DragonAtmaModeratorThe problem is that there's only so much room on the screen. Whereas FF1 has four characters with four items of up to seven letters, DoaE has seven characters with eight items of up to nine letters.
FF1: 4x4x7 = 112 letters
DoaE: 7x8x9 = 504 letters
NES screen: 32×28= 896 letters
So there's room…. barely. ALAKAMOCKUP!
It'd be better to have the subscreen scroll (think Ogre Battle units screen)…
May 23, 2012 at 2:54 pm #41323MiDKnighTModeratorOne correction Atma, resurrects would be shared across all generals so each general would only have 4 equipped items.
In a perfect world I was thinking something like this (granted this may be too difficult and we might be stuck with the black and white look like yours):
^^^ Granted this pic is an unrealistic dream but this is just to show a best case dream scenario.
May 23, 2012 at 4:17 pm #41324MiDKnighTModeratorLud replied via e-mail:
I think that this revamped item screen is a great idea! It would definitely be a step up in usability for DoaE. Unfortunately, like you, I don't know how feasible it is; I've actually done very little hex hacking of FF1 (NES version), and my experience is with the GBA title, and its item format is rather different. That said, here's the jobs I can see that would be needed to make this work:
1- The way items are encoded in memory would have to be understood differently in DoaE. As it is, items are stored in memory 8 at a time, and there are 7 lists of 8. This would need to be cut down to 7 lists of 4… and then we'd have 28 bits to do something cool… maybe each of those might be a quantity for various consumable or quest items, which would be considered the party's item bag. It would rock to have 25 Resurrects and 56 Power Pills :-D
2- It seems obvious that the proposed item screen would require more space in the ROM than what the current item list does, and would require a rather extensive recoding of its event loop. I'm not sure if this would be possible simply by coding this in the 0x40000+ regions of the ROM, because IIRC when execution transfers to anywhere after code block 0x0F, DoaE loses its recollection of memory until execution gets passed to a page within the range of 0x00 to 0x0F. This is probably the biggest barrier to realizing this edit.
3- The command "Item" would bring up another menu with two options: "Equipment" and "Utility". This would bring up the screen for the correct bag.
4- The party "backpack" would require scrolling functionality of some sort, in order to show up to 28 items.
5- According to your mock-up below, modders would be limited to item names of 7 characters or less (right now the limit is 9 or 10 characters). Unless of course we could figure out a way of having the four items in 1 column.
6- I think to do the equipment screen, we'd need a string similar to how the Status screen is encoded.
Given what little time I have to devote to modding right now (and that I don't really have intimate knowledge of FF1 NES beyond what could have been gleaned from the FF1 Hackster program), this is probably out of my league. But I do think it could be done; given enough time and willingness to write code and debug it afterwards…
I'll stop by in the next couple of days on the forums and say "hey" to everybody. Good to talk with/at you!

May 23, 2012 at 4:33 pm #41325sonic.penguinModeratorNice, maybe an equip screen is possible… maybe if you use the screen that shows the whole party and have equipping done there?
Also, YOU FORGOT TO ASK ABOUT CHANGING Castle -> Tactic Powerpill Skill
May 23, 2012 at 4:48 pm #41326MiDKnighTModeratorQuote:Also, YOU FORGOT TO ASK ABOUT CHANGING Castle -> Tactic Powerpill SkillWell I can do that eventually. Don't forget I'm the only one to do something almost exactly like this when I made "Life" and "Raise". I'm just busy (and lazy). :) Or you can do it if you spend plenty of time with the debugger and trace log and are ready to have some assembly coding fun.
I asked Lud about the equip menu because I knew he worked on FF1 but I guess he worked on the GBA version.
May 30, 2012 at 2:01 pm #41327ludmeisterParticipantHello MiDKnighT and all!
:?
MiDKnighT was kind enough to look me up and ask me (in a nice way of course) what the crap was going on and why I haven't been here.
Well… real life has a tendency to load you up until you absolutely can't do any more. That's kinda where I've been. Before I got the news that my dad passed away in late January, I even had the notion that I'd be interested in making a Wu mod. Of course, that was before I was contacted through my site by an entrepreneur who wanted to hire me as a programming consultant based off of the various projects featured there. So, I honestly barely apprehend what day it is before it's gone.
However, I can see that the Wu mod is in very capable hands, and I salute you in your endeavors, Sonic.
Also, I haven't gotten through your Ieyasu mod… I cannot figure out what to do after I get through chapter six, to advance the story. Maybe you can email me with some pointers, clandestine like :ninja:
Well, I gotta get back to work. Cheers, ya'll.
When all else fails... manipulate the source code.
May 30, 2012 at 2:11 pm #41328sonic.penguinModeratorIf you conquered Kyushu, head as far Northeast as possible, near where you started. After that, the hawk will lead the way… :ninja:
There were a considerable number of updates to the mod since you downloaded it originally, not sure if it will affect though.
Congratulations on your new job, and thanks for the props on the new mod. Was hoping you'd get the chance to convert Castle-> Auto powerpill based on tactics, but jobs come first… hence, I work on the mod when I get on break :)

June 1, 2012 at 12:56 am #41330Zhuge LiangParticipantlud, good to see you're still doing fine. And I'm sorry to hear about your father.
DoaE gave birth to Huo Hu.
