Do you feel the pacing is too slow? In part, the reason behind the steep curves is that I wanted to give players the chance to recruit the officers they wanted, without borking the difficulty level. I also wanted the endgame to be a challenge, because it has seemed to be the consensus that Remix v2.0 was too easy at the end (and not just because of the Evade/Thwart exploit).

June 16, 2013 at 3:30 pm #45522MiDKnighTModeratorIt slowed down a lot in Wu and especially Wei. But so far so good. There are so many good expensive items available – can't afford much of them. I figure once I get to the caves and start selling stuff I might get most of what I want.
June 16, 2013 at 5:44 pm #45523MiDKnighTModeratorI beat the game. I was right that the caves would fix all my equipment problems. My final party was:
Zhuge Liang
Ma Chao
Xun Yu
Zhang Bao
Zhao Yun
Zhuge Liang, Zhang Bao, and Zhao Yun stayed in my party throughout chapter 8. In the Xun Yu slot I had swapped between Zhang Zhao (until his soldier count became obsolete), Zhou Yu, Pang Tong, and Jiang Wei. I had Jiang Wei up until the very end when I got Xun Yu who was as smart but had way more troops. In the Ma Chao slot I also used Huang Gai (until his soldier count became obsolete) then Huang Zhong. Ma Chao's troop count went up a lot in the last couple of levels so he made it into my lineup then.
Overall a very fun mod and perhaps the best adaptation of the original story that I have played. I loved how you always danged that carrot out there, something to go for all the time. I can tell you have a lot of experience with RPG mods and I also saw plenty of influence from sonic's mods and the Yuan Shao mod. As for difficulty I thought it could have been tougher without the life/arise and heal bugs. When Sima Yi doesn't heal himself he becomes a lot easier :)
I would love to see you do a mod with a new story + map changes. With your past modding experience imagine a Final Fantasy themed mod or a Wizardry themed mod. I always thought of maybe doing a Shogun mod or Lord of the Rings mod but the amount of changes needed to pull that off would be a lot…
Anyways, great job! And wouldn't you know it… I set that breakpoint and the game never crashed again after I set it. This bug is hiding from us!

Thank you for the great feedback; it is most appreciated! I just got back from another of my out-of-state business trips, so I had been away from the modding scene for a bit; our company is getting ready for an important convention and one my projects is an integral part of that conference.
Yeah, Yuan Shao's Revenge and Flames of Wu have been very inspirational to me, and have helped push me to do more with the Remix, for sure. It's kind of a neat alliance… you, Sonic, and I: for Sonic, it is all about the story and the multimedia experience, and he is exceptional at weaving a storyline into a finished mod that has that professional feel. With your assembly chops (and the DoaE knowledge base) you could probably hack most any new feature into the game (obviously within reason, but still!) And for me, it's all about the smoothness of the gameplay, and pacing of advancement, and maximizing player options within the specified limits of the game's engine.
If you, Sonic, and I ever combined on a DoaE mod that was outside of the Three Kingdoms historical scope, and perhaps had a more fantastical setting, that really does have the capacity to be a great mod. I especially think your new Tactic classes has incredible possiblities there: that could be adapted (with more ASM wizardry of course) to allow for character customization and Class selecting. That would be awesome… choose your own starting hero! :sunny: Of course, the DoaE recruitment feature has Dragon Quest Monsters written all over it!
Anyway, thanks for documenting your run. And I'm sure we'll track down that bug sometime… it can't hide from us forever :unibrow:

June 25, 2013 at 4:53 pm #45527MiDKnighTModeratorI just recently fixed a bug with Life/Raise target selection, this would probably help:

As for a joint project, ya sonic and I have been talking with James about updating/revamping his Cao Cao mod. That is on the horizon…but it sounds like you have something bigger in mind :) A joint project would be cool. Maybe even use SVN to store the ROM? Never done that before but since I'm using SVN for DoaEditor that might work. Speaking of which I've been trying to figure out DoaEditor. I made some small updates that are in the latest version but trying to do more elaborate stuff…like a new tactics page is providing to be quite difficult. Still learning and working through it…
July 3, 2013 at 1:21 am #45528Zhang LuParticipantJust now started playing through revision 3.0, and this is absolutely amazing. The fact that I'm now able to roll around with Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu, and Ji Ling at the same time instantly made this worth it. The way you had both Yuans join Liu Bei was hilarious and had me in stitches. :D
Up to the Wu invasion of Jingzhou, ridiculously overleveled, and Ji Ling carving everyone up :D
EDIT: As of 11 PM in the East Coast, I've beaten this hack. My final party consisted of…
Zhuge Liang
Zhou Yu
Zhao Yun
Lu Meng
Pang Tong
Yuan Shao
Wen Chou (Always meant to change him out for Yan Liang or Ji Ling, but never bothered to do so)
Just missed the final battle: Ji Ling, Yan Liang, Yuan Shu, Xu Rong (!)
Next time I play through the game, it's going to be with just recruited generals from other forces. No Zhuge Liang, no Pang Tong, no Zhao Yun. Might even do a video playthrough if I feel up to it.
I was surprised at how many generals were good enough to be useful deep in the game, which I always like to see. Would be fun to see someone rolling through Wei with the likes of Xu Rong, Tian Feng, Yuan Shang, etc.

I've never tried to use several of the officers that you used for long stretches so that was very cool to hear about that. I will be very interested to hear about how a Shu-officer-boycott run goes for you! In fact, I think I will try that soon, to satisfy my curiosity.

July 3, 2013 at 3:49 pm #45530Zhang LuParticipantActually gonna start it right now as I have way too much time on my hands. Remember, no Shu officers. However, since I think I'm forced to use Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei, they will fight until I have 5 non-Shu peoples, then they are benched :P

DoaE gave birth to Huo Hu.

July 5, 2013 at 12:49 am #45534Zhang LuParticipantAn update on the DoaE: LR 3.0 video playthrough!
I will have the first few videos up sometime tonight. I recorded 3 gameplay sessions of around 20-30 mins. This game is officially NEXT on my Serious Play series. I'll link the playlist when they've all been uploaded.
