Updated (again) new Gongsun Zan battle @ Bo Hai
October 8, 2011 at 10:02 pm #38916Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterI might give this a spin tonight on FCE Ultra with the speedup. Keep up the good work Penguin.
Okay, I uploaded this through the system and put the link on the first page (deleting your old one). This way we can forego the wait to download and it will be backed up on our host. Not that waiting 20 seconds to download it was a big deal but now it's with all the other Destiny of an Emperor Hacks.
In the future you can just send the file to me, or update the link at the front page of this thread and I'll update it here through FTP. I know last time I told you to email and then I forgot to post, sorry bro lol.
Anyone remember who made the other Lu Bu mod? I suppose I could do some investigating.

Anyway, the first DoaE Lu Bu mod was done by an old member named Zhang Lu. You're editing quite a bit more than he is (back then, we basically just switched generals and maybe did some level adjusting but that's about it).
But yea, I'll check your rom out and give some thoughts.

There were just a few minor dialogue changes in addition to a battle change or two and that was it.
I decided to then take the whole mod in a different direction and broaden the scope of the mod to more than just a battle or two. Thanks to MidKnights recommendations as well as some others, its really starting to shape up.
My favorite part has actually been editing the text and coming up with better/more interesting dialogue in addition to making battles more unique. After testing a few mods out there, I think what really makes a mod is more than just flipping characters, its about creating a whole new story and reason to keep playing vintage 89 DOAE.

The ideas are virtually endless at this point with all that we have at our fingertips. Making the text compelling and relevant to the new story is a must, but to me the secret sauce will always be about battles / difficulty. I like the games hard but not to the point where you have to go crackhead with the save states.
The map is cool. Looks un-natural in some spots but it's challenging going through the Yellow Turban area now, having to walk around the craters. And Guan Hai is kicking my ass. Almost lost at QingZhou. Need to start buying defensive equip, but it's so damn expensive.
Maybe make these guys not recruitable?

October 9, 2011 at 5:12 am #38923Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterThere is no brigand at the bridge in the cave, is it supposed to be like that? I'm trying to walk across the water here and it's not happenin
One thing I've noted is that I gained levels fast, I got to level 8 real quick (with Ye Huo / Scorch which cheapens the game for a while). Nan Hua and his ~630 soldiers are probably a big part of that since EXP is directly attributed to soldier count.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingOctober 9, 2011 at 5:43 am #38924Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterSo then I went and accidentally went to Qing Zhou and got roasted by those 5 Turban jerks. Then I resurrected my guys and returned to find only Deng Mao there. And it's not like I defeated the other 4, when I died I tried to retreat to no avail and was completely wiped out. I think I've seen this happen before though. Probably relates to the brigand not being at the bridge.
One more thing – Huo Hu has no tactics (so he can't be tactician).
Cool stuff though, interested to see how Lu Bu becomes the prominent member of the army.

October 9, 2011 at 4:02 pm #38926Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterWell, what happened is I beat Zhang Jue at Mt Dingxao (sp?) and then on the way back I decided to try to go 'rest' at Qing Zhou…But of course that didn't happen and I lost to the five that are usually there (Zhang Bro's, Deng Mao, and Cheng Yuanzhi).
I resurrect my guys and go beat Guan Hai and recruit him. Try to go in the cave and the brigand is gone. So I return to rest at Xu Zhou and return to beat the brothers at Qing Zhou but only Deng Mao shows up :).
I haven't done too much editing and testing recently but I do recall weird things happening when you die and re-visit castles in these hacked roms we make.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingOctober 9, 2011 at 4:09 pm #38927Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterI still think Huo Hu needs to be a tactician lol. It's throwing me off because I have to carry Chen Deng's weak ass around longer than I want. Plus Huo Hu with no tactics in a DoaE mod is basically like creating a Si Ma Yi with no tactics huohu

DoaE gave birth to Huo Hu.
October 9, 2011 at 4:42 pm #38929Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYuan Shao at Luo Yang – says "peasents" instead of peasants. Just trying to catch the little errors too.
