Haven't been this absorbed in a game for a long ass time. Really compelling RPG; combines many features from recent ATLUS games to create some addictive gameplay.
The SMT Strange Journey Walkthrough FAQ is now up, with many more nice pictures.
So of course it's SMT so we're talking the same Demons, weakness-exploiting, etc. But what really struck me was how dynamic the relationships are with enemies. As you fight them you gradually learn more about them. Eventually you can talk to them, and you have all sorts of options. Monsters are good at giving varying responses (I think they act randomly to a certain extent but there are other factors like Alignment and moon phase). Then of course you fuse them, add to their abilities, and so on.
The storyline aspect of it has me pulled in too. Maybe not so much the storyline but the character's are interesting enough and provide quality dialogue, with varying personalities. Already relatively early on and some crazy things have happened to members of the crew entering the Schwarzwelt.
Wasn't sure what I'd think about the 1st person exploration but it works well. Have played maybe 5 hours, looking forward to getting some more good time in.
Been doing the guide and stockpiling the pics as I go. I will post a link to the pages soon

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingMarch 28, 2010 at 9:50 pm #37314NiahakModeratorI just started this a little bit ago, it's really good so far. More dungeon crawly than I usually like, but I think it'll be loads better than Etrian Odyssey & co.
June 14, 2010 at 10:23 pm #37315Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterThis has been what I've been playing the past few months. Played it heavy through the first two Sectors, then got busy / burnt out a little bit, but picked it back up in May and have made some decent progress. Heading into Sector G (Sector Grus). Pretty sure I'm near the end.
Tough difficulty throughout especially the Sector E: Eridanus boss, Ouroboros. Just a vicious struggle where you just need to pray that Ouroboros uses some of his less favorable tactics. The story has grown on me a little though at it's heart this is all about Megaten gameplay. Very addictive. It's been a reasonably popular guide for a game that is relatively underground despite ATLUS' recent popularity…. no matter how good of an RPG I or others may think it is, Strange Journey as a whole probably comes away with a lukewarm reception, putting off many mainstream sally gamers who can't deal with dying in games, etc.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJune 15, 2010 at 12:29 am #37316NiahakModeratorThe grind wore me down on this one. I'm fine with dying in games, but taking forever for the plot to progress is criminal (especially when SJ seems to be based around weird-stuff-happening, so nothing's explained). The plot was paper-thin where I left off (had just finished B sector / Bootes), and I'm not sure I'll pick it up again :( I respect the core of the game and all, it's just too much time to spend for not nearly the payoff.
Although LYS – you would probably like Devil Survivor if you gave it a shot. Much more plot, but it's still got a great difficulty curve.
June 15, 2010 at 3:23 am #37317Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterPlot is definitely dry at times, especially at that point. I took a long break after Bootes, close to two months lol. It does get interesting plot wise once you meet the third party I mentioned to you earlier, but yea it is plenty of work grinding through map after map (and having to check every wall, etc). I'm just hooked to the gameplay basically, I guess.
Hey remember, I played through Devil Survivor per your suggestion last August. On two different computers so it was two different quests and I played them both until like the 5th or 6th day both I believe. I think I was trying to do Yuzu and that one 'Princess' type you'd see at various points. Got burnt out from playing them both I think.
Funny you say that though because I did think of that while I was playing this. We'll see how it goes, I would like to pick that up at some point again, a fresh quest maybe. If I hammer through SJ I'll probably take a break from the series for a bit at least. Throughout SJ I've seen lots of references to things in Devil Survivor (and probably other Megaten games too) like with Kresnik and Vampire Kudlak.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJune 15, 2010 at 12:11 pm #37318NiahakModeratorOh yeah – my bad. You just never finished either side. Not that the end stuff is that much more interesting than the rest.
I think you can always do Yuzu's side as long as you don't actively piss her off. Haven't checked, though.
Making a walkthrough for that game would be quite a bit painful.
