Anybody ever play this one? Used to be one of my favorites back in the days before Nintendo ( I'm old! )
I even made a walkthrough for this at http://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46206
Backing it up here for safe keeping:
SUMMARY:
The goal of this game is to first acquire 20 followers. Once you hit the magical number of 20 (even for a second), the Buddha will hand down additional instructions which would include bringing the Buddha, scroll, and mirror to a specified location (usually the Temple Of The Buddha, the Night Buddhas Shrine (inside the Shogun's Palace) and the Tunnel Of Love). The last task (bringing the items to the specified location) has a specific time frame in which to accomplish the task so it's better to have the three key items already in your possession when you reach 20 followers. If you are able to accomplish the last task within the allotted time you win the game!
MENU OPTIONS:
These are the menu options from the game manual:
"To select an icon press FIRE. The joystick allows you
to highlight the icon of your choice, press FIRE to
select. The icon will stay highlighted until you have
finished that action.
The TAKE icon (hand receiving object) allows you to
pick up an object, food or money by passing over it.
The DROP icon (hand dropping object) allows you to
choose an object from your pockets to drop.
The GIVE icon (two hands) asks you to choose an
item from your pocket, or money to give someone.
Use up-down joystick movement to adjust amount
of money, then choose the recipient.
The EXAMINE icon enables you to find out about
people on the screen, you will be asked to select
which character. You may have to do this more than
once to find out all you need, but be careful not to
annoy people in the process!
The ORDER icon (exclamation mark, etc.) will let you
tell people what to do IF they agree. You must first
choose the person, then between a selection of
orders on the caption line. You may give up to two
orders at a time, the first one will have priority. lf you
only want one order choose END. (TlP – to ensure the
person returns to you after carrying out an order, get
them to "befriend" you as their second order!). People
may sometimes ignore you simply because they are
already busy carrying out an order, or else because
they don't like you or what you have asked them
to do!
The PAUSE icon (hourglass) pauses the game until
you press FIRE. All the characters in the game are
displayed and the theme tune plays.
The BEFRIEND icon (heart) conveys feelings of
friendship to the chosen person. lf your friendship is
appreciated the heart icon will "throb" for up to 10
seconds, you may quit by pressing FIRE.
The ATTACK (Katana) icon will allow you to enter
into combat with a chosen character. The border will
change to yellow, when you attack or are attacked.
Try to get as close as possible to your opponent
during the fight. Press FIRE to yield.
The YIELD (flag) icon allows you to surrender in
combat. When you are fighting press FIRE and you
will be asked if you wish to yield. Be prepared to lose
everything if you do. YES or NO will be highlighted
alternately.
The SAVE/LOAD icon (cassette) enables you to save
and restore the game position (to tape only). (lf you
should experience a load error RUN/STOP RESTORE
and try again. Keep the cassette unit as far away as
possible from the monitor).
As soon as you have 20 followers you will receive
orders from the Buddha for your final task."
CHARACTER CLASSES:
When you start the game you select a character to play with. Not all characters start on a level playing field though. If you start off as a Lord you have a head start on the competition and may be able to complete the game in a shorter amount of time. But if you start off as a peasant you will have a more difficult quest.
Character descriptions from the manual:
You can choose to become Blackthorne or any of the
40 or so characters.
Your position in life makes a great difference to the
difficulty of the game. A warlord with a large
following and ready supply of money has a head
start. A samurai has the advantage of martial skills
but lacks followers. A peasant or servant starts from
the bottom and has the hardest time becoming
Sh6gun. Priests can be reasonable fighters and are
often clever. Bandits can often fight well, but can be
more trouble than they are worth.
Each person has varying degrees of ambition,
fighting skills, aggression, intelligence,'gullibility
loyalty and friendship. The last two are "feelings"
directed towards other people. These characteristics
can all change with time, for example success in
combat will increase fighting skill or possession of
a valuable object will add to ambition. People also
change from one game to the next to prevent their
responses becoming too predictable. EXAMINING
someone (unless they are too hostile or indifferent
to answer a few polite questions) will give you some
idea of what sort of person they are.
NOBLES are often very ambitious and are unlikely
to become your followers. They often already have
followers or are quick to recruit new ones. Even
when they are friendly you cannot depend on them
to carry out your orders.
SAMURAI are excellent fighters. Mostly they are not
ambitious but they are very loyal and follow orders
faithfully. They are not easy to sway to your side but
they tend to remain loyal once swayed.
PEASANTS and SERVANTS are not usually good
fighters and often yield easily. As they are poor they
are often swayed by gifts or bribes. They are easily
distracted and do not always carry out orders
reliably. However they can be very sociable if
encouraged!
BANDITS may be good fighters and, as you would
expect, can be very aggressive. They can be
persuaded to take orders but beware, any mischief
they get up to while acting on your behalf will have
repercussions on you!
PRIESTS are enlightened souls but they can be
surprisingly ambitious and even aggressive for holy
men. You may be able to persuade a few to enter
your service. However, Zen Master lkematsu is a
rather notable exception and not worldly at all.
This is an approximate guide to the various classes,
but naturally there will be individuals who do not
conform to the general pattern! Don't forget that,
although someone may appear gullible and dimwitted
at the beginning of the game, they may
change as the game progresses.
STARTING FOLLOWERS:
This isn't exact but it's a best estimate as to who follows who at the beginning of the game.
Lord Toranaga (9 followers – Starts at East Palace)
Samurai Omi
Samurai Peregrine
Samurai Tiger
Samurai Yoshinaka
Peasant Koku
Peasant Persimmon
Peasant Pine
Peasant Stone
Servant Willow
Lord Ishido (9 followers – Starts at West Palace)
Samurai Hawk
Samurai Lion
Samurai Naga
Samurai Sky Dragon
Peasant Asa
Peasant Camellia
Peasant Night Rain
Peasant Yoko
Servant Autumn Moon
Captain Blackthorne (1 follower – Starts at the Beach)
Lady Mariko
Lady Mariko (3 followers – Starts at Heavens Above)
Captain Blackthorne
Servant Jade
Servant Moonlight
Lady Yotaka (2 followers – Starts at the Dark Forest)
Servant Kiku
Servant Rako
– Each of Toranaga and Ishido's samurai start with 0 followers.
– Each freelance samurai starts with 0-2 followers (usually other samurai).
– Each bandit starts with 0-2 followers (usually other bandits).
– The priests start in heaven and follow each other.
– Peasants start with no followers with the exception of Novi and Kogai who follow each other.
– The servants and Zen Master Ikematsu start with no followers.
GAMEPLAY TIPS:
From the manual:
You can influence other people in various ways:
BEFRIENDING conveys feelings of friendship to
the chosen person. lf your friendship is returned they
will stay around to receive your overtures. The closer
you are together on the screen the more successful
you will be. lf your good feelings are not reciprocated
they may leave the area or even attack you!
BRIBERY can often sway people to your cause. Some
people will do anything for a few yen and a new
shield.
ATTACKING can produce a variety of results. A person
who is not very proud, or is fairly clever, may attempt
to run away. They may even yield to you. lf you order
an attack and your follower's opponent yields, his
respect for you will increase too but the opposite
also applies. Those who yield will lose their
possessions.
ORDERING is very useful. You cannot do everything
and this allows you to delegate. lt will be up to you to
select the most useful task for anyone agreeing to
obey you. Cleverer people will not need to be told to
collect a weapon before attacking but others will
need to be reminded of such practical things.
Although all recent events cannot be recorded, you
will often be informed of your follower's activities in
the course of time.
Each character starts life in a different location, so
you will begin the game on different screens when
you choose different characters.
Being Buddhists, it is only natural that characters
are reincarnated after death. Due to the way in which
people accumulate bad karma, by killing, stealing, etc,
they tend to reappear somewhat lower in the
social order.
Another character may become Shogun in the course
of the game. You will be offered the choice to become
his or her follower, if you accept the game will end,
if you refuse everyone in the land will become your
enemy for a while! However people do forgive and
forget and you may well be able to regain your
former status.
These are from Mr Angry's excellent post at http://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1640 :
– As soon as you can, kill Lord Toranga and Lord Ishido. They each start off with 9 followers (possibly more, can't remember). You want these followers to be free spirits…and cheap to bribe
– Going with the first point, kill Mariko…I do that all the time. Perhaps it's just my hate for her, but killing her usually results in $$$. She's a rich one.
– Also try to kill Lady Yotaka. She has a bunch of followers, although her followers suck in my opinion.
– Get the buddha at the beginning of the game. If you don't do this, it'll end up in the hands of the priest or priestess. The priestess is strong. The priest is weak.
– Collect all the objects and money that you can find. Everything can be traded/given.
– When befriending someone, stand close to them face to face (can't remember if face to face matters). The closer you stand, the more effect.
– When I want to turn a person into my follower I give them a small amount of money, befriend them. Then a gift, befriend them. Then I befriend them until they become my follower. If they refuse, I kill them to get my stuff back. If they didn't refuse and they follow you, give them a little bit more money then befriend them a couple more times. This is insurance
– There's some people that will become your follower but will betray you later. These people usually hang out in groups. A couple of examples are priest/priestess, the bandits, Kogai and Novi (I hate these too so much ), etc.
– Zen Master Ikematsu will never betray you (99% of the time he won't). He's incredibly loyal….strong too.
– When you're too weak and you want someone killed, find someone really open to suggestion and order them to do the killing for you. This sometimes works, but the majority of the time it doesn't.
– You need 20 followers to achieve Shogun status. Once this has been achieved, you need to get the Buddha, the Mirror (available inside Zen Master's palace…you need the book to get inside) and the Scroll (available from the Tunnel Of Love…you need the rose to get inside). Once you have these items, you'll be told to get them to a specific location. I think these are the Temple Of The Buddha, the Night Buddhas Shrine (inside the Shogun's Palace) and the Tunnel Of Love (the rose place). Once there, drop the items and you win. You should note that once you have 20 followers, you can kill ANYONE. Followers or not with no consequence. If your followers start going down, don't worry. It doesn't affect you. Your mission is to get these items and take them to the required destination.
– If you want to store your items somewhere, try giving them to a loyal follower then later, ask them to befriend you constantly. Chances are they'll give back the item. This can come in handy when you need the rose to get back into the Tunnel Of Love at the end of the game, but you've given it away
– MiDKnighT's advice: Grab the Buddha, scroll, and mirror at the beginning of the game and stash them in the tunnel of love and just keep the rose with me the rest of the game. Stash the book there too if you can… The only thing you have to worry about is that if you don't have those 3 items in your possession when you hit 20 followers, they get moved/scrambled! So when you have 15 followers or so, you have to go back and pick them up so that you have them with you when you reach 20.
– After a long period of time, people come back to life but as a different class of person. If they were once a lord, they may come back as a peasant or servant. A samurai may come back as a lord, etc. It's random, but they usually come back as a peasant or servant.
– Know the map. It helps. Know where there's passages to walk through, it speeds up the game Also know where there's secret passages. For example, in the palaces of Toranga and Ishido, there's passages up to what looks like a jail. Sometimes there's goodies there.
– Every character has different abilities, so choose yours wisely. A lot of the samurai's are strong (Hawk and Lion). Persimmon is probably the fastest in the game. Ishido and Toranga start off with a lot of followers. Mariko is rich. Zen Master is strong, etc.
– If the border of a screen is a different colour, the corresponding room is locked. You need a special item to unlock the room. There's only 2 such rooms. The Zen Master's Palace (Book) and the Tunnel of Love (Rose).
– There's a bug (I think) in the game…every once in a while, you may see a small cloud in the top left/right of a screen. It's shaped like a triangle. If you walk into this cloud at a 45 degree angle, it'll take you to a black screen. This lets you navigate between screens quickly. For example..there's a cloud near the Zen Master's Palace (go to the outside exit at the right. The first screen above ground has one). Go into there and you can take yourself to the priest and priestess (or nearby) really easily. Knowing how to get there involves you knowing the map. Please note: Don't store anything in this black area!!!! Once I got 20 followers and had all of the required items stored here. When I came back to get them, they were gone! I had to kill just about everyone to get my stuff back
– I've never known the sword to make you stronger. If it does, it can't be by that much. I only carry it around because it's a hard item to find
– I've never known the shield to be anything more than an item to trade.
– Fighting. I can't believe I missed this….To fight and win, the best way is to fight with your back (!!). Let's say someone comes charging at you. Turn your back to them and let them fight your back. This takes away less of your energy. Note that they move from your back to your front pretty quickly, so you need to be running around with them attacking your back. Only let them touch the first few pixels of your back. Once you've mastered this, you can kill just about anyone regardless of your class and the amount of health you have.
– If a person yields to you while fighting, they'll give you all of their money and their items. If you have no room to take their items, they keep them.
– If you kill a person, you automatically take their money and items. If you can't take their items, they are dropped on top of their skull grave thingy.
– When a person yields, they're about to die.
– It's possible to get followers by fighting people until they're about to die. They become your follower out of fear. Don't expect it to last though. They usually turn to other people quickly. Try apologizing with money and gifts
– If you can see you're about to die or just want to stop a fight, don't yield. That's the cowards way…..run off the screen.
MAP:
Get familiar with the map! This gives a general idea of where things are:

* This map includes every character in their starting location and each item in their typical starting location (it can vary a little).
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER:
This video shows some highlights of the game including the ending with Samurai Sky Dragon:
Here's a speed run beating the game in 14 minutes and 53 seconds as Lord Toranaga:
And a TAS speed run beating the game in 5 minutes and 7 seconds again as Lord Toranaga.

January 24, 2013 at 10:44 pm #45027sonic.penguinModeratorReminds me of a Sega Master System kind of game and a mix of the original Ninja Gaiden :P
January 30, 2013 at 5:41 am #45028MiDKnighTModeratorSo I made a video that shows the ending… Because there wasn't one out there…
Started with zero followers this time as Samurai Sky Dragon which made it tougher to get to 20. First time I played I started as Lord Toranaga who had 9 followers to start with. Sky Dragon was a much better fighter than Toranaga so if anybody crossed me they die!
January 30, 2013 at 12:18 pm #45029DragonAtmaModeratorDo I have a Commodore 64? Of coruse.
Did I ever play Shogun? No.
So I guess I'd better show one of the games I enjoyed…
(Psst: that's not the optimal way to play. "The peaceful approach really works best. I have not used a totally depraved approach and won. You've got to have some friends somewhere. If something goes wrong, you need a friendly mission where you can go back and not have to worry about an insurrection or something." — Dan Bunten)
January 30, 2013 at 12:59 pm #45030MiDKnighTModeratorNever played that one Atma. Some of my fav C-64 games were:
Shogun
Championship Wrestling
Impossible Mission
Karateka
International Karate
Archon
Defender of the Crown
Winter Games
California Games
Summer Games
Skate or Die!
And probably a few more I can't remember.
January 30, 2013 at 1:23 pm #45031NiahakModeratorWow. I also had a Commodore 64 (and IIRC it's still functioning, haven't tried for several years), but I only ever played:
Pit Stop 2
The Movie Monster Game
Miner 2049'er
Jumpman
Friday the 13th
It seems that my experiences with it were considerably more limited than they should've been — none of these strategy games!
January 30, 2013 at 5:04 pm #45032MiDKnighTModeratorNever played those Niahak.
I'm also making a walkthrough for Shogun as none existed. Yes I am that much of a nerd… I also plugged our forum in the process:
http://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46206
If I had an FCEUX equivalent for C-64 I could really dig into the game for more details but I haven't found such a thing just yet.
January 31, 2013 at 5:01 pm #45034DragonAtmaModeratorAh, Jumpman… someone actually started a modern port of it a decade ago (and actually got a new level made by Randy Glover, the original version's creator!). Tragically, it was never finisehd (IIRC 25 of the 30 levels were completed; one has the layout but no enemies, and the other four weren't even started).
I also have Miner 2049'er, but IIRC I never got past level 4 or 5…
And LYS needs to look at the code, as it didn't accept this post when it had a link and a youtube, yet it had no problem accepting spam from golflife THREE TIMES…
January 31, 2013 at 11:58 pm #45035sonic.penguinModeratorLYS keeps leaving his peasant following and is hoggin' all the powder again. :huohu:
Speaking of which, was there a consensus on those
October 23, 2013 at 8:52 am #52620MiDKnighTModeratorMan I love this game. Maybe it’s just because I have fond memories of it.
If any of you want to play around with an old game, I suggest:
1. Watch the Shogun miniseries. Heck you can even watch it on youtube:
2. Play this game.
3. Die happy.
