My daughter started playing Final Fantasy VI, and as a good dad I helped her level up and stuff after she went to bed. I never knew about Umaro the Yeti until this playthrough.
If you level him up a bunch in the dinosaur forest and give him the rage ring he becomes an absolute BEAST. At about level 70 he just flings your teammates into monsters for 9999 damage. Add the marvel shoes relic and he does his business even faster.

April 12, 2012 at 9:54 pm #42500DragonAtmaModeratorYou mean Final Fantasy Three.
April 13, 2012 at 1:54 am #42501sonic.penguinModeratorno, VI :P Anyways, add the Blizzard orb + black belt and he's even better
April 13, 2012 at 3:11 am #42502NiahakModeratorI only really used Umaro on my initial playthrough, subsequent ones my party is usually Sabin/Edgar/Celes/? (Where ? varies depending on who I feel like taking with me… usually Gogo or Cyan).
It's not a very difficult game, so party composition doesn't matter that much. I was just tired of Umaro doing extremely un-useful things on certain fights. He's a fun character to mess around with, though.
April 13, 2012 at 3:26 am #42503DragonAtmaModeratorThe label says III, the title screen says III, the box says III… insisting that it's VI is Insane Troll Logic on par with "It looks like a duck, it smells like a duck, it sounds like a duck, therefore it's a hippopotamus!". ;)
That said, Umaro isn't a bad member; it's just that the others are better. In particular, if you NEED to heal, everyone can do so (even Mog and Gau, if you're not using their abilities)…. except Umaro.

DoaE gave birth to Huo Hu.

Mostly because my daughter enjoyed it so much and it was her favorite.
Quote:I only really used Umaro on my initial playthrough, subsequent ones my party is usually Sabin/Edgar/Celes/? (Where ? varies depending on who I feel like taking with me… usually Gogo or Cyan).Ya those are good ppl… I just had fun turning Umaro into a BEAST. I don't like Cyan much due to waiting on his sword techs. Gogo is a very diverse character but you can't increase his stats with augments which hurts.
Umaro's best use is the Cultists' Tower where you can only use magic. Our party for that one was:
Umaro (Rage Ring + Black Belt)
Terra
Celes
Relm or Gogo
Then you have Umaro kicking arse when everybody else can only use magic.
April 13, 2012 at 2:24 pm #42506DragonAtmaModeratorYou're not using Cyan properly, then. Select commands for the other three, then let his SwdTech charge up while the others are busy doing whatever; the animations are long enough that Cyan should be up to his level 4 tech by then time they finish.
Alternately, just use his first tech; it requires no charging, and IIRC it's always stronger than an ordinary attack. XD
April 13, 2012 at 4:24 pm #42507MiDKnighTModeratorYa I do that when I have to have Cyan in my party. For physical attacks I prefer Edgar, Umaro, and Mog with the dragoon boots. Shadow is about as good as Cyan but without the annoying sword techs plus throw does major damage in some cases.

Select commands for the other three, then let his SwdTech charge up while the others are busy doing whateverlol, well you can't really blame him for this. It's not like that's an obvious choice – more like a hassle to get around Cyan's lame offensive game. Unless all three characters you have are also up for a turn, you're still going to be doing some waiting to use Cyan's longer SwdTech's. Cyan is a beast defensively, so there's that. He's much too slow for my tastes, not even with the SwdTech but he's one of the slowest naturally. His level 1 move Dispatch is useful because it's pretty much an automatic 1.5x or 2x damage right?
Cyan and Umaro are generally the two I leave behind for the Final area. Like others have said, the fact you cannot control Umaro is what usually has him in my doghouse (but he is definitely a beast, and I need to try him at the Cult Tower). Gau I actually do like a lot, since he has the option to be controlled. Stray Cat rage + Catscratch ability does like 4x damage, just absurd. And he does it often.
Gogo is great but almost too cheap to use. Can pick any ability and then also mimic people? Recruiting him is definitely cool though. Unique place, has the FakeMustache for Relm, one of my favorite things in the game. Love going around using that to get all the Blue Magic spells for Strago.
Quote:The label says III, the title screen says III, the box says IIIIf we're in America, yea. This game was actually pretty mainstream, a lot of my friends who weren't even RPG fans played the game. And of course if I said FFVI they'd be like what the hell are you talking about. But online when it's assumed for some reason that everyone knows it is really FFVI, it has to be used. Otherwise it's just too confusing since there would be two FF3's.
You have the actual SNES cart MidKnight? Or GBA? I used to have the cart, now I have GBA and that lame FF Anthology version on PSX (with horrible loading times, just to load up the menu lol).
Sometimes I wonder why I consider FFIV and FFV to be better than this game. Because it is really great. Good story, lots of fun optional stuff (particularly in the Dark World). But then I just remember that all three of them are awesome, the order of them is subjective. The SNES era was definitely the best for FF, not even close. PSX era FF's were decent, NES era FF's were originators but too archaic, and the PS2 era is just embarrassing when comparing them to the others.

In our last game we left Gau and Setzer behind.

April 22, 2012 at 1:57 pm #42510sonic.penguinModeratorQuote:Gau and Setzer behind.I always did the same thing. Their special skills were just too random for me. I always preferred going with Sabin for the powerful blitzes and anyone who could use the Atma weapon. Locke is also a good choice to unlock the Paladin shield + Steal you can get uber items from kefkas tower late on in the game
I found FFVI advance to be cool with the bonus dungeons, but they really gimped the Merit Award from stopping players from equipping a snow muffler making them essentially invincible.

Make him use different melee abilities? I know the Blizzard Orb makes him use that blizzard ability (which if I remember is kind of underwhelming).
But yea, I know he's still good. Niahak said it best. The game definitely is easy enough where you can use anybody.
Setzer isn't that great either. Statistically he's pretty weak. I used to like him when I was younger for the Coin Toss, until I realized it makes you broke. I still kinda like to bring him around for the Slots, to try to get all BARs to get the random esper use. Except sometimes I'll get Merton and it'll kill my party and that sucks. But I still bring the guy with to the end most of the time.
Quote:I always preferred going with Sabin for the powerful blitzesSabin is so great I almost get bored with using him. Plus, the Blitzes will occasionally fuck up when I feel I did them perfectly (particularly the rotation ones like Aura Bolt and Fire Dance). But then again I seem to be more successful doing Air Blade and Bum Rush, not why sure but it works better for my thumb. Still, the dude is just too good especially once you get Bum Rush.
Quote:Locke is also a good choice to unlock the Paladin shieldWhy is he good for that? I always put the Cursed Shield on Strago and give him a Heal Rod and the Ribbon. Actually he always carries a Heal Rod for me, I love those damn things (for him at least).
Quote:I found FFVI advance to be cool with the bonus dungeons, but they really gimped the Merit Award from stopping players from equipping a snow muffler making them essentially invincible.Never tried the Bonus Dungeons I don't think. Can't Umaro do something with the Snow Muffler? I remember the Merit Award allowing you to equip anything on the character, that's pretty nice. Again though, all the badass relics and espers make the game too easy. I kinda want to do a no-magic run just so everyone doesn't use the same magic spells (though the characters would be a lot weaker without having the Esper STR/MAG,etc bonuses after each level up).
