I used to play the Ultima games. Especially the one where you have too use your brain until it explodes over nine thousand times. lol

I gave this Elona thing a shot. Seems interesting so far. I used to play ADOM every so often, so I sort of knew what to expect…
This certainly seems more unforgiving, though. I started off, ate my shield when I first got hungry (it was *reducing* my stats, probably since it was made of meat), had my pet bear eaten by a spider, got myself killed to a goblin, then got myself killed by a spider… and decided I was done for the immediate future.
I'll pick it back up again, I'm sure – the permanent character helps (at least while there's no significant penalty for death).

I rerolled as a warrior and it's been much easier (for some values of "easy"; I'm only level 3 and I've died 6 times).
My dog fell into a well and died, then got killed by a slime. She hates me now.
Although the sword I started with (claymore of flame) is awesome, the second significant quest I took has been pitting me against slimes… making it rust. :( And killing me several times so far.
Yes, Elona is free.
Also cursed items are rare enough that you'll pick up the habit of equipping stuff to get more info on them… only for the hundredth item to be cursed and not come off. :(
