Saiyuki Journey West

Saiyuki Journey West is a Tactical RPG put out by Koei surprisingly. There are lots of similarities to Final Fantasy Tactics / Tactics Ogre type games but it's a but more simple, though that is not to say it is devoid of strategy. You can't really level up that well so the bosses are generally always competitive and the final boss is brutal.
Throughout the linear route, there are bosses in nearly every battle. Each character not named Sanzo has a Were that they can change into (though this seems to be inefficient later on and I rarely used it towards the very end) to unlock powerful ability's. The character's themselves do not have classes but are unique in their own way in terms of attack, movement, speed, etc. Also, each character has an element that they are strong in magically.
The story itself is engaging enough as you are fed little by little as you travel. A big plus is the amount of side quests, secret characters and special weapons / ability's.

     Aigis Ponders

Persona 3 FES will ship on the 22nd and reach stores April 23rd 2008 for 29$. The original Persona 3 is still going for far more than that on eBay and other locations.

Persona 3 FES adds over 30 hours of additional gameplay and scenes. I am most excited for the additions during Episode Yourself (the regular run through Tartarus) but Episode Aegis continues the story afterward with an interesting character Metis.
  • Revelations Persona  ( 1 items )
Once upon a time, way back in the early Playstation 1 days, Revelations Persona was a little known RPG by Atlus. It still is, but Persona and the Shin Megami Tensei series has branched out in several ways since Persona 1's arrival in the mid 90's.
  • Shining Force I  ( 2 items )

    Shining Force I Finish

Originally released for the Genesis in the early 90's, it has since been re-released on many different platforms (Dreamcast, GBA, and most recent the Nintendo Wii).

Max and his many friends need to stop Dark Dragon and the Runefaust Army from destroying the land...

Throughout the game Max comes across all sorts of recruits, from Mages to Bird Men to Assault Knights to Steam Knights.  Around 25-30 characters join the army but only 12 can be used at any one time.

The game doesn't really pick up in difficulty until around the Kane battle.  Then you go through several tough boss fights (Kane, Mishaela, Chaos, Ramladu, etc).

Growlanser 5 V Heritage of War FAQ

It is in limited supply, and you get all of the above. The game, Growlanser Heritage of War, the Growlanser illustration book, three Growlanser pins, a media cd, keychain and some holographic cards.

The gameplay seems to be a little different in this one. Each mission has it's own strategic elements but the battling is rpg-like but much more smooth. Growlanser doesn't require much grinding and the story flows well, keeping you at it for hours.

Haschen is the silent hero type but you do get plenty of dialog to choose from regarding any and all matters going on with the PMB. This game has really grown on me, mostly because of how intense some missions can get. At the same time one of my few pet peeves is that there is so much

    Wild ARMs V 5 FAQ

Ten years after the creation of the first Wild ARMs, Xseed has released Wild ARM 5 for the PS2 on August 29th 2007. They vow to use elements from all the old Wild ARMs including bringing back the World Map and use of ARMs of course.

Dean Stark, Avril and Rebecca embark on a quest to find Johnny Appleseed. Along the way, Avril's memory recovers and he true identity is revealed. Dean meanwhile realizes that his lifelong idol is corrupt, but knows that he can do anything so long as he doesn't give up! This is a good example of how cliche' and cheesy the storyline can be, though there are some good plot points (Rebecca's relationship with Dean and her journal time actually provide some interesting insight). And unfortunately, the game is rather slow at story progression at first but really picks up around Mount Chug Chug.

Lots of cameos from all the old Wild Arms characters. They're all involved in some way and you'll see them often throughout. Most of them will be involved in side quests and you may end up getting nice items from them or doing stuff for them.

The gameplay is the selling point. It's similar to the hex battle of Wild Arms 4. Random encounters aren't really difficult considering allies restore HP after each and every battle. Boss battles are easy at first but later on in the game (especially in optional dungeons) can provide lots of challenges. Maybe one of the hardest factors in WA5 is dealing with magic - spells cost a lot of MP, and MP doesn't restore, so preserving your MP is essential (especially considering there really is no MP replenishing items save for the one screen invisible crystals that can be shot).

Wild Arms 5 really shines at the end, once Dean receives the Golem Hunter's pass and can travel on train, with a golem, monowheel, teleport orb, exodus orb, etc. There is lots of optional stuff to do as every area can basically be revisited at the end for goodies. Four optional dungeons will test even the best level 100 party's. The hardest bosses (like King Angolmois and Ragu Ragula) can be found here).

Certainly one of the last great PS2 RPGs, it's worth a pick up if you're looking for a world map-venturing classic rpg that has plenty of depth.

Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3 FAQ

Buy Persona 3 at the best prices available.
Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3 is a unique style of game, generally a turn based rpg but with Sim elements. The idea behind the Social Link system is that you develop your Persona's based on the decisions you make and the people you choose to associate with. This in turn shapes the party that you walk around with at night.

Persona 3 reached stores on the 15th of August.
Preorder Persona 3 FES now - Persona 3 FES will be released stateside on April 22nd 2008 for only $29.99. This is for the RPG of the Year in 2008 in it's entirety, but Persona 3 FES extends past the normal ending and also showcases Episode Aigis. Overall, it's an extra 30 hours+ of gameplay to what was already an epic game.
New Personae have been added and new costumes as well. Storylines are more fleshed out with extra scenes notably in the case of Junpei / Chidori. More stuff is added at night, more games at the mall to play, you can go on hunts with Koromaru and walks with other characters.

    Vandal Hearts

Vandal Hearts is a strategy game for the ps1 made by Konami.
You get about 12 characters and go through 35 + battles throughout 6 chapters. There is no real world map and you don't walk about with Ash Lambert - instead you pick and choose where you go, and then you fight battles. Ash is fighting against Hel Spites, Dolf Crowley and Kane of the Crimson Guard.
Ash and friends begin with basic classes like Mage, Healer, Archer, etc. But at level 10 each character can be promoted and then can choose between two class types depending on who they are (Ash only has one choice). Archers can be a Bowman or Hawknight, Healers can be a Bishop or Ninja, Mages can be a Sorcerer or Ninja, and so on. They can be promoted again at level 20 (but only the class they chose).
Throughout the game, many Key's can be collected (one in each chapter). Gaining the Prisms from these Key's allows you to access the ultimate class, the Vandalier for Ash.

    Rogue Galaxy FAQ

Made by Level 5. Released 1/30/07 in US.
Jaster is a young man on Planet Rosa. He has dreams of being a space pirate and traveling the galaxy. Little does he know this is his destiny.
Throughout his quest Jaster finds friends to join him, and 2 others can fight side by side with him in battle. Each character has a regular weapon and a sub-weapon (not to mention a plethora of abilities). It is not turn based but rather traveling on map and fighting battle work seamlessly as one.
Learning abilities and gaining attribute buffs revolves around the items you collect. There are lots of treasures to be had and even more can be produced or won from battle. The more rare the revelation item the better generally. The latter ones like the Galactic Compass and Crystal Staff and some others can be troublesome to find.
After traveling through space with the Dorgenark crew they learn that Daytron, with Valkog and Norma are the main enemies. Meanwhile, Jaster learns about his own personal past as a descendant of the Star King.

    Dragon Warrior FAQ

    Buy Dragon Warrior

Here is the classic RPG. You are the descendent of Erdrick. You are thrust into a world of monsters and you need to fight thousands of them to gain levels. Eventually you save the princess of Tantegel and fight the Dragonlord at the end of the game to save your land.

The world of Alefgard is one where monsters only travel by themselves - so the battles are only you vs. one enemy. This is good but doesn't make it any easier. Experience points and levelling up is of prime importance if you want to travel to new areas. Dragon Warrior I is a game that requires a ridiculous amount of enemy killing to gain levels unfortunately. Gold takes long to build up as well and you need that for new weapons and armor just as badly. This affects the playability but for the time it was obviously ignored. Nowaday it's embarrassing to think how slow it was. Thankfully since we have emulators we can use the speedup button (the ~ / ` key on FCE Ultra) to negate the speed issues and make a time consuming game more reasonable.

There are free weapons and armor like Erdrick's Sword and Erdrick's Armor. Not exactly easy to find though.

You will need to get several random items and then eventually the Rainbow Drop so that you can go to Charlock Castle (just southeast of Tantegel Castle / Brecconary Town).

Erdrick's Descendent (the hero, you) learns spells and is an able attacker. It will be his physical attacks that kills the true Dragon Lord. However he does learn Heal, Healmore, Hurt, Stopspell, etc.

    Dragon Warrior 2 II FAQ

I think this is the hardest Dragon Warrior I've played so far. The levelling up is stiff and your rewards for those levels are slim. Certainly the later NES ones, Dragon Warrior III and Dragon Warrior IV, are much more playable and reasonable with experience points. Even the Metal Babbles in Dragon Warrior II yield little EXP! DWII is pretty weak in the story part but that's to be expected.

The Prince of Midenhall unites with the Prince of Cannock and the Princess of Moonbrooke. Acquiring the three happens within the first few hours of the game, with the Princess of Moonbrooke being last to join (she was turned into a dog!).

The Midenhall Prince is a tank that does nothing but attack. Fortunately he is the one who can make the last battles easy. The other two can both heal and use attack magic, although the Prince of Cannock is probably more of a healer / defensive type as opposed to the Princess's generally offensive based spells.

They're saving the world from Hargon and Malroth. In this game you even get to go through Tantegel and Charlock's Castle from Dragon Warrior I. Expect to put in lots of levelling up and go through some insanely long caves but it doesn't hurt to play a difficult RPG once in a while.

    Dragon Warrior 3 III FAQ

Dragon Warrior III improves greatly upon it's first two predecessors. You have four total characters instead of 3 from Dragon Warrior II. More importantly you are allowed to create as many characters as you want and you can choose between a variety of classes. Later on you can change their classes at level 20.

One character you must have is the Hero from Aliahan, Ortega's son. He has a good strength, defense, and learns both healing and attack spells. He is a bit slow however and gains levels slowly.
The standard three classes are Soldier, Wizard and Pilgrim. You can also choose a Merchant, Fighter or Goof-off. Later on in the game you can have Sages (a Wizard and Pilgrim combined).
Soldiers have great attack and defense. They gain levels quickly also. However they are slow and aren't very nimble. Merchants are pretty generic with no spells and pretty weak physical abilities but they find gold after battles and you need a merchant to start a town late in the game. Fighters are very fast and get critical hits very often. They can't equip most defensive equipment or weapons but are solid nonetheless. Wizards are weak but cast the strongest magical spells, while Pilgrim's have all the healing spells and are a bit more physically gifted than Wizards. Sage's though can equip the best weapons and armor for magicians and are the best class in the game.

Goof-off's are weak and are very limited in everything other than Luck basically. Fortunately you don't need the Book of Sartori to make them Sages so you can have multiple sages if you get a goof off to level 20.

The game is so much bigger than the previous two. You even get a full-scale Alefgard (from Dragon Warrior I) to explore at the end of Dragon Warrior III (yes, after the first entire world). Because the game is bigger your characters will get in the 40's for levels instead of 20's (like the first two).

Dragon Warrior 3 still requires lots of building up but isn't quite as unmerciful as the first two Dragon Quests. Most gamers will appreciate this as the game is more balanced with exploring and levelling up. While not as deep and good as Dragon Warrior IV, Dragon Warrior 3 is unique enough to compete with DWIV for one of the best RPGs on the NES.

    Dragon Warrior 4 IV FAQ

You would be hard pressed to say that there is a better RPG for the NES than Dragon Warrior IV. The depth, the improvement in story, and the overall quality of the game make it one of the best on the system regardless of genre. Even now this is one of the most expensive NES cartridges to find.

Dragon Warrior 4 has a brilliant chapter system that introduces you to the characters and gives you background on their particular stories. After the fourth chapter, you'll start the Hero's chapter. The hero goes around and acquires the previous characters in hopes of defeating Necrosaro.

The characters include Ragnar the soldier, Alena the princess fighter, Cristo the Chancellor healer, Brey the ice-based magician, Taloon the Arms Merchant, Nara the fortune teller (healer also) and Mara the fire-based magician. Oh, and the Zenithian Hero that is a name of your choice.

While the first four chapters are a fun introduction, the real fun begins in the fifth chapter when you can truly customize your party. When you acquire all of the characters you can fight with four of them (and even use the backup members in the wagon, a feature the final fantasy series didnt have until FFX came around).

It's the best game on the NES not named destiny of an emperor, play it.
