Video Game Walkthrough Guides FAQs
Dragon Quest V DS is the second remade Dragon Quest game released on the Nintendo DS, after Dragon Quest IV DS. It was originally made in 1992 for the SNES, alas Dragon Quest stopped coming stateside after Dragon Warrior IV. Enix tried some interesting ideas with Dragon Quest V, though the basic combat system stays the same throughout any Dragon Quest.
Dragon Quest V allows the Hero to acquire a wagon and then be able to recruit up to 70 different monsters. A few of them join through storyline events but in general, monsters are acquired after being defeated. On a rare occasion, they will ask to join you if you have room. Staying on top of the newest enemies will allow you to get certain spells / abilities much faster than the Hero or his human allies will get them.
The game starts off with the Hero being shown as a baby. However, you then wake up from a ‘bad dream’ to find that you are a kid with your dad on a ship. Your journey starts here, and travels through three generations. It is much like Phantasy Star III where the Hero will eventually choose who to marry. Even the abilities (and hair color!) of your family will be altered based on which female you choose.
Maybe the best feature is one that unfortunately didn’t make it to Dragon Quest IV DS – the Party Chat option. This allows you to get the opinion of your monster and human allies at any time. Does a great job of introducing personalities since characters otherwise don’t talk as much as you go through the game. Thousands of extra lines added to the translation (which of course contributes to Party Chat not being in Dragon Quest IV).
DRAGON QUEST V DS WALKTHROUGH GUIDE
As mentioned, you start off with a scene of the Hero’s father Pankraz walking around with the chancellor. Sancho will come running from the north stairs yelling about a little baby. This is you, the Hero (along with mother Mada).
The screen turns to the opening, and then you see Hero in a purple-clad outfit sleeping. Grab the Seed of Resilience and Medicinal Herb. Go outside on the deck and search the barrels for another Medicinal Herb, then talk to everyone. Search the back of this deck for more barrels and a T ‘n’ T ticket. Take the nearby stairs for another Tnt Ticket and Medicinal Herb.
You can speak with Cap’n Blithe in his room by the wheel. Turns out this ship actually belongs to a rich fellow named Rodrigo Briscoletti. After you’ve done all this, the ship should dock. You will be told to visit with your father before you go, which you should do; he reminds you, this is your last chance to bring anything you want. So get all the treasures above, and then go off to the dock.
As you disembark, Hero and Pankraz get to meet Briscoletti for the first time. Including his two daughters, who you’ll learn more about later (one of which is named Nera). Eventually, the ship is about to head out again as Briscoletti and the Captain have plans.
Your father Pankranz will talk to a merchant and then hand you an adventurer’s map. Grab the 10 gold from the barrel near you, and make your way outside.
Your first battle will be against three Blue Slimes. What a pathetic battle, but even your Hero cannot handle it, until Pankraz comes to rescue. Just defend and Pankraz will heal you and maul the enemies. You’ll walk north some more and get into battle with some Jail Cats, another easy win with Pankraz at your side. Soon enough, you’ll be at a village.
Whealbrook Village
Everyone greets Pankraz as you return. You’ll make your way into Sancho’s House. A girl and lady (Mrs. Whitaker) walk in from Roundbeck. Hero then goes and plays with the girl, Bianca. When you regain control, grab the Leather Hat in the dresser. Grab another Medicinal Herb downstairs, and the Pot Lid. The stairs leading down have a Strength Seed, which you should then use.
Go outside and save, and check the well nearby. You will see a yellow object shining on the ground: always look for these in dungeons and especially wells like this. You find a stone from Whealbrook. The man in the field mentions something about these Whealbrook Bluestones after this. The weapon shop has a Medicinal Herb inside.
After you’ve explored the town and talked to everyone, speak with Pankraz and he’ll head off. Hmm, as you leave your house, you will see Pankraz storm through town and through the old man’s house with the raft in the back yard. Pankraz goes into the cave. Follow him, but you have to take that side route by the guard. Before heading in, I suggest selling your Cypress Stick and some Medicinal Herbs to ensure you can buy a Bamboo Stick.
Whealbrook Adit (Cave)
As you see, you cannot rotate the camera angle in dungeons. Take the first left for a Medicinal Herb, and then go northwest for the stairs down (northeast is a dead end).
Southeast for 50 gold coins. We have another dead end in the northeast – sure would be nice to have a raft. Drackies are down here and will be doing 3-5 damage, so be careful. Bunicorn’s might be the next toughest enemy though the Boring Bugs can be annoying. There is a sign as you continue west, but our young hero cannot read it yet. Stick to the northwest to grab a Leather Shield (+4 for your defense). Southwest all the way for another set of stairs down.
Go northeast and help this dwarf by moving the rock off his legs. This is Rockefeller – he can now give the medicine to Mrs. Whitaker (if you remember, she was wondering what was taking so long). Northwest of here for a set of Wayfarer’s Clothes (+3 defense). We’re upgrading our equipment, slowly but surely. The enemies here should be taking off next to nothing now. Before you head on east, search that rock one more time – there is a rock in one of the cracks. You found a Whealbrook Bluestone. Further east to see a blue slime. He gives you a hint that is typical of many rpg’s especially Dragon Quest / Dragon Warrior: you encounter enemies at a much higher rate in the forests and mountains than you do the plains.
Make your way out of the cave now. I reached Level 4 along the way, acquiring the Heal spell.
Whealbrook Town
As you return to town, stop by the Inn’s second floor and talk to Bianca. She mentions she’s from Roundbeck which is west of here. Then talk to Mrs Whitaker and you’ll let her know that you saved the guy.
Go to the north part of town, the item shop. Mr. Rockefeller will tell you to check the drawer, which has a Handwoven Cape. Doesn’t seem like you can equip it though. Return to your home and talk to Sancho – agree that it’s time to sleep.
In the morning, it’s time to go to Roundbeck, just west and a little south of Whealbrook.
Roundbeck Village
The group heads straight north into the Inn. Mr. Whitaker is here, on the bed. Talk to everyone and you will then go for a walk with Bianca. Notice she is Level 1 and has a Paring Knife, Pot Lid and Handwoven Cape.
Start by going to the third floor of the Inn for a Chimaera Wing and a Seed of Resilience. Go to the first floor now, and take the southeast exit. Talk to the bard here to re-tell the story of the Uptaten Towers. As you talk to the villagers you will learn a lot more about these Towers (north of here). The kids in the south have a cat that they’ll seemingly give you if you just defeat the Ghosts at Uptaten Tower.
At this time, you can return to the Inn and talk to Pankraz. Old Whitey will be okay. Pankraz agrees to have a rest upstairs.
In the middle of the night, Bianca wakes you up. Of course, she wants to go to the Uptaten Towers. First of all, don’t worry; you don’t have to do this all in one night. If anything I suggest going outside and grinding outside a bit until Bianca gains a few levels and a spell. It might be wise to save up for a newer weapon too, maybe the Copper Sword for the Hero or the Thorn Whip for Bianca.
Travel west a bit, and then north to find a blue-ish castle.
Uptaten Towers
The west path with the cave leads to a door you can’t unlock. Go northeast for a Medicinal Herb and Chimaera Wing. The front entrance is sealed off too. Go to the back via the east route, and you’ll find some ladders. Climb them and enter; as you do, lightning goes off and the door shuts.
Ignore the coffins and head south; Skeletons come out, and Bianca screams. You are now alone. Go down the stairs, and then north and west to go outside again. You hear a sound. Check the second grave to release Bianca. Go in the door to the west now.
The Countess here will smile at you and open up the staircase going down. There is a Poem book by here but you can’t do anything with it. Go down the stairs, and then to the middle of the next floor. Search the cabinets to find a Silver Tea Tray. Further south for a Medicinal Herb and the Handwoven Cape. Speak with Miss Count to learn more about these Uptaten Towers. She formally asks you to banish the ghosts in this place so that they do not live a cursed existence for the rest of their life.
Jump down the hole or go down the stairs. It is completely dark below – the ghosts will not bug you, but you will need to wait for lightning to strike to see where you’re going. Go down the stairs nearby (should be very close if you fell down the hole like advised). You then see the king go out this door on Floor 3. You can fall down if you want, but just go out that door and follow the long path.
However the king then goes through a door that leads to the balcony. You can head the opposite way and work your way to the ground level to see the Skeleton’s playing the piano and what not. But to continue you’ll need to go out on this third floor balcony and say Yes to the King. Go back inside and the Count will hover in. He says there is a Torch in the basement worth getting before attacking the ringleader.
So, follow the path he shows you to all the way to the bottom floor with the Skeleton’s and pianos. See that older couple? The door now opens by them, so go through. You can rest here for free, so that’s something. But you wake up outside the towers. Worry not; talk to the old man, and then go in through the front door – the formerly rusted door opens right up. This allows you to take a quick left to where the Inn / basement were.
There is a cook here, with some skeletons. Search the pots for a Medicinal Herb, and that Torch. Rest on your way out, then go in that cave north of the old man. The rusted door now opens. This leads to 30 Gold, a Seed of Strength and a Silver Teacup.
Return a few floors up to where the Count Uptaten left you, and show him the torch. Take the path by him that leads to another long path. You should then be in the room with two treasures you cannot get; go up the stairs. It will be really dark in this room again. Use the Torch, and then go north and jump down the hole. Grab the two treasures now, a Chimaera Wing and a Silver Teapot. That will complete the Toff’s Tea Set. Fall through the hole again and backtrack to that room you were just at with the two treasures, but on the opposite end of the room. Go upstairs, use the Torch, travel through the door and towards the Boss. Make sure you are rested and ready when you encounter him – I would suggest at least level 6. Preferably Level 7 – Hero and Bianca will get there about the same time and Bianca learns Kasap.
Agree to go out for a dinner with the Boss, but the party falls through a trap to the bottom floor with three Wax Murderers. You have probably noticed they are some of the toughest enemies in this Tower; fast, and with a high attack. Not to mention Frizz. But they are still regular monsters, so waste them and take another rest. Return up top to the dark area and use the Torch. You won’t go too far and you’ll see the Housekeeper head out to the balcony to the south. Heal up and follow.
Talk to the Haunted Housekeeper and he will wonder how the Skeletons have not torn you up yet. A battle ensues. Use Kasap to start the battle off to do more damage. The Haunted Housekeeper has a pretty good attack, but you can neutralize his physical attacks with Dazzle (or at least reduce the likelihood that he hits you). After using Dazzle he missed the next 5 hits (but then connected on two straight). He also used Frizz and Sap. Remember, Dazzle does not effect magic spells, so he’ll still hit you with those. Just heal up if you need to. 300 EXP and 180 Gold Coins are your reward.
After the battle, the Haunted Housekeeper agrees to leave this castle. Turns out they were forced out of the Dark World Nadiria. The Count and Countess then come by and take you up to the two graves. As they depart, the Countess leaves the glowing Gold Orb. Grab it, and make your way out of here. No more enemies. Also, you can’t rest here anymore, but that doesn’t matter. Head back to Roundbeck.
Roundbeck
As you get back, you will see some text about how news spread about your exploits at the Uptaten Towers. As you might have guessed, you needed to do this to continue the story with Pankraz being sick. The scene then fades to Bianca acquiring the cat. Shes wants to name the puss Saber, so let her.
Go up to Pankraz, who has recovered. The folks are amazed you did what you did, but Pankraz wants to return to Whealbrook now. Say your goodbyes; Bianca will hand you Bianca’s Ribbon. Rather, she ties it to Saber.
Time to head back to Whealbrook. You’ll fight battles along the way, and during the first turn of the first battle, Saber will join in.
Whealbrook Village
Upon returning, it’s time for a rest. Get up and start talking to everyone around town. Some stange things have been happening, almost as if a ghost is around town. Almost everyone in town talks about it. After you have talked to everyone, go to the downstairs of the bar to see a ghostly figure on the left side of the table. She says she’s going to a house with a cellar, so go to Sancho’s House and go to the basement. She is in the cellar, sure enough. Her name is Honey the faerie. She wants to bring you to her land, to have Treacle tell you everything.
Faerie Lea
You are brought to the queen, Treacle. Agree to help her, as one of their greatest treasures, the Herald of Spring, has been stolen. Honey will join you on your quest, and she is at level 7 with Heal and some nice equipment. However, she is a true NPC and you cannot control her in battle.
Go downstairs to save your game. As the lady says, the faeries cannot summon Spring, which is why that guy at Whealbrook is still cold. Head down the stairs and south across the frozen lily pads. Look at that white island – there is a yellow thing flashing on the ground, so grab it for a Seed of Life.
Further south to the village part of town. Buy a Boomerang for the Hero to attack all enemies. You surely must have the money for it at this point. The Stone Fangs are nice too. The Skeleton next to him mentions a lock master who was banished for writing a book about lock picking. Check the Armor Shop for a Phial of Holy Water. Not sure if you have any gold left, but if you do you may feel compelled to get a Leather Kilt for Saber since that will be a +12 for his defense for a cheap price.
Dwarf’s Den
Just go west to find the Dwarf Cave. West when you are inside for a total of 125 Gold Coins. Talk to the Slime and the Dwarf; they blame some guy named Dwight. He says to go to the bottom of the cave, to find Dwight and the book about Locks.
Take the stairs down, and to the north you will see a big hole. This just leads to a poisonous area, so skip that route and go east in this room. Which leads to a staircase going down. Go right for a Seed of Agility. Head south and take the next right path for the first stairs going down. Grab the treasure, the book entitled Lots about Locks. Your Hero will then absorb the information from Lots about Locks, and you can now open those blue doors. So go south and grab the 120 Gold Coins and the Seed of Life.
Time to leave. Talk to that Dwarf on the way out and he’ll comment on how you can open simple locks now. Still, no Dwight though. Return to Faerie Lea.
Faerie Lea
Save and rest up. If you spend the night, you’ll be back in Whealbrook, so go to your basement to return to this faerie world. I would buy a bunch of armor for the Hero, which you likely passed up initially if you followed my shopping trip. Anyway, the Bronze Shield, Scale Armour and Fur Hood each add between +7 to +9 defense, so getting them all for about 1000 is a good deal. You will need all of this for the upcoming Ice Palace.
Winter Palace
As you enter, Hero will use his secret knowledge of ‘Lots about Locks’ to open the big door. Careful as you walk about here. You will slide a few steps each time you walk on the ice (random, but it acts as almost identical to the Ice Cavern in Beyond the Beyond).
If you go straight up and down the hole, it will get you to a stair case back upstairs. Then, work your way west and south for a treasure room. Unfortunately, the northeast treasure is empty, and the other two yield just 5 coins and a Chimaera Wing. So this step could certainly be skipped, though for a few different reasons it wouldn’t hurt to stay around this Cave and grind more than you normally would (because you won’t have access to it after this and the monsters inside).
On that first floor, if you go east you can hit the staircase up to continue on. Here, you see a red sprite with two chests behind him. Not Dwight Dwarf, but da White Dwarf. He knows about the Herald of Sprig Flute that Treacle is looking for. Dwight has a decent attack, and will heal himself after a while. If Honey can get Kasap to work, that would be nice. Dwight goes down shortly and drops a Phial of Magic Water.
After this, The Winter Queen shows up. A Blizzag from Dragon Warrior IV. Use the Hero as the main healer so that Honey can focus on using Sizz, since the Winter Queen is obviously weak against fire. Kasap is always nice to get off since Winter Queen will be healing herself throughout. The ice breath is the worst, taking off 12-15 on the Hero and Saber but 1/3rd of that on Honey thankfully. Other problems will be the fact that Saber will randomly defend, so you may get unlucky with that (he’s less apt to defend if he has more HP but still will do it on occasion). Also, hopefully you didn’t burn through Honey’s MP earlier because she’s not as effective when she’s reserved to taking off 7 with her physical attacks. You’ll gain 650 EXP, but I’d guess this will be a long battle for you.
Grab the treasures; The Herald of Spring and a Boomerang. Return all the way back to the Faerie Lea and give the Herald of Spring to the Queen. Then, it is time for you to head back to your world. Honey departs but hands you a branch. Enjoy the visuals on this scene.
Whealbrook Village
Back in Whealbrook, Sancho will wonder where you have been. Pankraz has already gone off to Coburg Castle. Sancho takes the flower Honey gave you, but you can go upstairs and grab it to put it in your bag (Blooming Branch).
Notice that purple guy is gone, the one who looks like an older version of the Hero. Inside the church though is Pankraz. Save your game just as he just did. Head for the village exit and Pankraz will tell you how he has been summoned to Coburg Castle.
Coburg Castle
Pankraz leads the way southeast for a bit but then back northeast for a shrine (another shrine is east across the coast). Pankraz introduces himself as Pankraz Gotha of Whealbrook to the guard and you are allowed through. Before going out, you get a nice view of the river thanks to your dad.
After this, Coburg Castle is a good deal north and a tad east. There were no random battles the entire trip here so don’t worry. The path to the king here is a winding one. The King of Coburg has something to request of Pankraz, and has the guards leave. Time for the Hero to go explore the castle now as the King and Pankraz talk.
Just go down one of the staircases, and then take the east route to meet a green-haired lad, Prince Harry. Prince Harry will ask you to be his lackey once he is in control of the throne, and you have to say yes. The chest nearby is empty, by the way. The room on the other side has the Queen Consort and her son Prince Wilbur. It seems there is a succession issue with these two kids. Take the stairs nearby.
Big room here. Take the stairs to an area with a lot of people and a well. None of the barrels here hosts a treasure. Go out the door to the courtyard, and then to the door next to you. Nothing but two locked doors in this room. Backtrack to the staircase going up, but don’t go up it. Instead, go south to the exit of the castle (though the guards don’t let you leave). Save your game on the other side of this floor, and search that nearby room for a Seed of Magic.
Return upstairs and back to the King of Coburg. Sounds like he has assigned your dad Pankraz to watch over eldest son Prince Harry. So, head over to the east end of the upper floor to find Pankraz. Harry doesn’t like him much so he suggests you go in there and befriend Harry. Say yes to Harry, and go to get the chest. It is empty, and when you return Harry is gone. Go tell Pankraz and when he goes in there, Harry will be back in the room. Hmm. Harry again asks you to look for the badge, but this time as you look and it’s empty, search where he was standing to reveal a staircase.
But, this is where the plot thickens. Someone else is here in addition to Harry. Soon, Harry is gone. Go out of that door to see where the raft goes. First things first, run back to Pankraz by Harry’s room upstairs. Pankraz then will follow the same route you took before, and follow him out of town. After this point, he has disappeared, so don’t worry. You have some time to check out the town and build up levels.
Talk to the travelling salesman in the front of town. He has great armor choices, like the Iron Helmet, Iron Armour and Iron Shield. The Iron Helmet is a great addition for Saber too. The Chain Whip is going to give you more attack power but won’t hit everyone like the Boomerang would. The Chain Whip will however hit everyone in the group, which is nice.
Ancient Ruins
Go north a bit over the craters of Coburg, and then continue east and northeast (past the sign that you can’t read and the poison). Just past that sign is the Ancient Ruins Temple. No enemies here, just go north to the second area.
Right at the beginning of this next area, you see Pankraz and a bunch of enemies near eachother. Alas you have to travel far east first, taking the first south path for steps going down and then north for 180 gold coins. Return to that split and go further east, down more steps to the chest, an Antidotal Herb. Directly north of here for the door and you see those punks. They’re nice guys. Search the barrels for a T N T Ticket. Return outside and loop around the building clockwise, heading into that side area for a Seed of Strength. West up the staircase and north through the big set of doors.
This area looks nice, but there is not much to do besides head left out the door and south more. Heal up, as you see Pankraz is in sight. You might think you can help him with the battle but Pankraz dispatches these three enemies in two turns. Pankraz joins with you now; note that you cannot leave the Ancient Ruins now that he has rejoined. Pankraz is absurd in battle, killing enemies in one hit and healing you afterward. Needless to say, it’s a good time to grind if you want.
Go through that door north of you after stepping on the switch. Get on the raft and go southwest in the next area to find a pack of Monster Munchies. Now we make our way all the way to the top, and work clockwise along the north wall to grab the Elfin Elixir. East a bit and north under the overpass, and you will see Harry in a cell.
Lots of things happen, and ultimately you now have that level 1 goon Harry in your party. Take the raft south to the bigger room, and southwest to where you go the Monster Munchies in that treasure chest. East of here are two torches which signal a doorway. Through here and then south to the entrance area.
Alas, escaping isn’t that easy as Great Bishop Ladja is here to stop the kids. Attack for a few turns, he’ll just laugh. But then he lets out a fierce fire that will do about 40-50 damage. Just go ahead and die, don’t waste restorative items.
After the battle, Pankraz is here and recognizes Ladja from something. Ladja then talks about the Order of Zugzwang, and summons two scary looking enemies. Still, not much trouble for the great Pankraz. Slon the Rook and Kon the knight will go down after a few turns.
But, the next battle Pankraz will lose considering the circumstances. The enemies have the Hero as a slave, and they notice the Gold Orb. The Gold Orb is shattered over the Hero.
This is the end of the 1st Generation Dragon Quest V DS Walkthrough.
10 long years have passed, and we pick back up with the Hero enslaved but certainly looking older. Hero is now Crocodilopolis Slave. You can talk to people around here though, but head to the northeast and then up the stairs. Nice look at the mountains eh? Southeast of here and you see that classic green hair. Harry talks about another escape plan, so that you can go find your Mother.
West of him for a staircase. Talk to the soldier down here and he is candid with you. Travel south and to the graveyard if you want, but not much to do here. Just go upstairs and the sun is setting. Work is over for the night.
You wake up with full health in a slave room. Talk to Harry; he really seems to have changed his ways. No longer a brat, he’s laid back and provides insight. You now have to talk to the other slaves, even the ones laying down. Make note of Maria in the other room. She talks a bit about the Order of Zugzwang, the thing Ladja was talking about.
Just as you have spoken to everyone, the whip is cracked and it’s time to go. Work your way to the bottom level where you started, and you see Harry. Harry runs up and starts a battle, so follow him and defeat the two Slave-Drivers. These guys have a formidable attack since you have no armor on basically, and Harry is level 1. Heal when you have to and use Frizz with Harry and maybe Woosh with Hero. Harry will gain a few levels and learn Dazzle.
After the battle, the girl gets medical attention. Harry and Hero are thrown in jail for kicking the Slave Drivers around. Talk to Harry a few times. The soldier comes with Maria. The soldier is Joshua, the brother of Maria. He is thankful you helped her, and shows you a way out. He tells you a dirty secret regarding the slaves here once the temple is finished. Talk to your friends and get in the barrel. Watch it as it goes off the waterfall and travels all over the map and eventually northeast.
Heaven’s Above Abbey
You wake up with a Nun of the Above, part of the Order of the Above. Go out of the room and talk to Harry who has seemingly been waiting for you to get up. Time to watch Maria’s baptism; it seems she will be staying here at the Abbey.
After this, you have some time to look around. Start by going upstairs and to the southeast corner to see Maria. She hands you 1000 gold from her brother and thanks you. Go downstairs and to the opposite room and speak to the lady. She hands you a crude image. The DQV Crude Image gives your luck stat 15 points.
Go to the gate. Harry is waiting, and he really has no where else to go so he prefers to go with you in search of your mother. You will say your goodbyes to Maria and everyone else at the Abbey, and then Harry officially joins with you.
Fortuna City
This is a big city, directly north of the Abbey. Lots of things are about to go down. First of all, go east to the bar. The bartender recognizes you as old enough to drink now. Northeast of here for a lady and the item shop. Take the next door to the west to talk to the shopkeeper and go upstairs to take a Seed of Resilience and a T’n’T Ticket. Go back down and enter the armour shop – get Harry some nice cheap stuff, like a Bronze Shield and Hardwood Headwear. Also, the Leather Kilt suits him well but you might as well give the one in your bag to him (from Saber).
North of here a bit more to meet Mystic Mridula. She tells your fortune, saying something evil is going on. Grab the Medicinal Herb. Go outside and travel far west (heading north to talk to the kid, who tells you to come back later). West more for the stairs down to the jail.
Ah, the Casino. Check it out. There is a staircase going down just northwest of the entrance, which has a T’n’T Ticket. Back up and down another staircase to the west for the T’n’T board. Back to the main floor and northwest for the lady’s dressing room. Search the cabinets for a Silver Tiara and a Silk Robe.
West of here to see a building with a Blue Slime on the front and a staircase down. This place is key. Grab the Monster Munchies and a Pot Lid. Down here you meet Monty the Monster Monitor and Carla, his assistant. She actually has something insightful for you, and that’s that monsters won’t do what you tell them unless their intelligence is 20 or higher. Which you probably already guessed from Saber when you’d tell him to attack or he’d defend (or attack a different target).
Monty tells you the ins and outs of recruiting enemies, though it’s not much. Basically, to recruit a monster you will need to have defeated them a few times. If they sense you are stronger than them, they might join after the battle. But it could take several battles. Plus, you need a Wagon to host them.
Buy an Edged Boomerang for the Hero to attack all enemies (and I gave the Chain Whip to Harry then). Go outside and fight enemies until it gets dark out, and re-enter Fortuna City. Like many Dragon Quest’s, you get different dialog / events at night compared to day.
Go to the Curiosity Shop in the northwest corner with the sign. He says he should be selling this wagon for 3000 gold but he’ll do 300 gold just this time. Go visit Monty now and the dialogue changes; you can look at your monsters, release a monster, etc. But since you have none, there is not much you can do right now. You can rename your bag though!
Whealbrook Village
In case you didn’t notice, Whealbrook isn’t that far off from you. Just northwest (mostly north).
But when you get there, it’s not like it used to be. Go north to the old man who recognizes you and asks about Pankraz. Unfortunate times for the village and Pankraz. Search his pot for a Seed of Wisdom.
You can learn the whole situation from the lady at the church east of the old man’s house. She mentions how Coburg Castle sent out troops to destroy the village after what happened with Harry (obviously thinking that Pankraz kidnapped Harry).
Whealbrook Adit
This time you can enter the Whealbrook Adit from the side of the old man’s house. Take the raft in, and use the staircase in the northeast going down. Go north and down the staircase in the next room too. As you get deeper into this cave, you will encounter more Metal Slimes. If you encounter one just send all of your characters to defeat it; the 1300+ exp is a great reward and levels up your new monsters real quick. It should also enable your Hero to get to Level 14, when you will then gain the Evac Spell so that you can exit a cave or dungeon right away.
Take the west fork and north for 850 Gold Coins. Further west and north for the stairs going down to the third floor now. Just follow the path west, north, east, and north again (ignoring the staircases) until you reach two treasures; Iron Cuirass and a Seed of Agility. The Iron Cuirass can go to one of your Monsters if you have one, or Harry since it’s probably an upgrade for him too. South of here and go up the stairs.
Okay, step on all the weird-shaped panels. They’ll get darker (and sink). But you won’t fall. Just go north down the stairs. Grab the Night Light aka the Lamp of Darkness from earlier Dragon Warrior’s. And just like old Dragon Warrior’s / Dragon Quest’s, this Light is not mandatory but if you want to manipulate time and make it be night, just use this.
Down the stairs to the east, and then west in the lower area all the way to the wall. Go south, but take the middle south path to continue on. Eventually, you reach a staircase down to the lowest level.
Seems to be where Pankraz hung out. Search the drawers for a Leather Kilt, good for a monster. Grab the Seed of Strength in the pot, and then the treasure for Pankraz’s letter. It details his journey; the one you are continuing. To search for your mother Mada who was abducted by the evil ones of Nadiria. Pankraz does have the Zenithian Sword, a weapon you may remember from Dragon Warrior / Quest IV. Alas, our Hero cannot equip the Zenithian Sword as of right now.
If you have Evac you can cast it but I always suggest going back through to level up some more if you have the HP / MP to do it. Not much to do when you get back to Whealbrook besides talk to the villagers. Off to Roundbeck, which is to the southwest if you forgot.
Roundbeck
Might want to outfit your monsters here. Depends on which monsters you have; I have a Slime and Brownie, so I bought the former an Edged Boomerang and a Giant Mallet for Brownie. Also, a bunch of cheap defensive gear for Brownie. Just be reasonable and don’t spend all of your funds on them. Hopefully Hero and Harry have the best or close to the best equipment you can buy at this point.
Go to the bar and say no, I don’t want a drink. You will then talk to a guy about the Legendary Zenithian Hero from Dragon Quest IV that used all the Zenithian equipment to defeat Estark. Zenithian Helm, Zenithian Sword, Zenithian Shield and the Zenithian Armour. Go and grab a Mini Medal below.
Stay the night at the Inn and Harry will wake up and talk to you. Seems Wilbur has taken over the throne, but Harry wants to sneak his way into Coburg. Sleep the rest of the time, and then talk to the old guy on the deck to learn that the Whitaker’s moved far away across the ocean. The guard in the southwest mentions how Queen Dowager is pulling all the strings, not Wilbur. Sleep two nights total and talk to the lady north of the Innkeeper to acquire the Zizzwizz Pillows. Use this item in battle to put all enemies to sleep.
Kingdom of Coburg
Leave Roundbeck now, and go all the way east past Whealbrook. Take that shrine by the water. You will learn that Queen Dowager has ordered that no one cross into their land. But Harry knows this guy, Frank O’Phobe. He complains about the state of the country and will let you through.
Along the way north to Coburg I managed to recruit a Slime Knight, so I went back to get some weapons / armor since it seems clear the Brownie is a one-trick pony.
Coburg Castle
As you get to Coburg, it is probably night fall, so either stay at the Inn or walk around and fight battles until it is daytime. It’d be a good time to build levels for your newer monster allies, anyway. Not much going on in town; some nice weapons, but very expensive. Hand over 5 gold to the poor folk by the bridge, and then go north to the castle.
Harry suggests not informing others of his identity, so go to the left to see a guard blocking the area off. Go up the nearby stairs. You learn a lot regarding what is going on just by talking to these guys. A few monsters and a punk, hanging out and talking about their grand rewards. Meanwhile, a soldier in bed is depressed over destroying a certain village for no reason.
As you leave the Castle, Harry will remember a secret way in, something to do with a waterway. Sure enough, go outside and east to that dock and raft. Head back towards town and look under the bridge – there is a way to go north underneath towards the Castle. Follow the path and step on the switch to open a doorway.
Coburg Waterway Dungeon
You’ll start to fight enemies here. Of course, you can back out, get on the raft and take it to the left dock to rest or do whatever. Take the right passage as you enter and follow it clockwise to stairs going down.
Next area go west at the fork for two treasures; a pair of Steel Fangs and a Shellmet, both good choices for a Slime (slurp). Return to the fork to take the north path, and talk to the old guy. He blames Harry’s death on Queen Dowager. Strangely enough, the west cell has the real Queen Dowager. Hmm. Continue south and take the southeast path for the stairs up.
Go up and hit the switch. This opens the path back east to the exit, in case you need to leave and rest up. Take the stairs next to it and you’ll be in the courtyard. The dog here is actually a Small Fry monster. Defeat them, and take the west door to the kitchen. West again, and you can go south in the main floor to talk to the guards, who will finally get out of your way. Take the northwest stairs in that big room, then speak with Darwin. Use the side door, then go up the stairs to see Wilbur.
Wilbur won’t speak to anyone, except he recognizes Brother Harry. Harry mentions Dowager being in jail, and King Wilbur then goes on about some mirror he read about in a book at the Castle Vault. Wilbur hands you the Key to Coburg. Go all the way back downstairs and out through the kitchen to the courtyard area of Coburg. Take the door to the right here. This is the room where the story took a turn and Harry was kidnapped. Now with the Coburg Key we can take the north path and search for a Mini Medal in the room. Take the ensuing warp path.
You are now in a new land, just southeast of Fortuna and Heaven’s Above Abbey. Check the Tower door to the south, but you’ll find it to be locked. You’ll have to go north to Heaven’s Above Abbey.
Heaven’s Above Abbey
Save upon getting here. The Nun of the Above next to the piano knows something is up, so say yes and then another sister will offer to help you get into the Abovitall Tower. It is your old friend Maria who wants to repay you for helping her earlier.
Abovitall Tower
Return south to Abovitall Tower. The doors still won’t budge, but Maria goes to pray to the Goddess to help you. Once the door opens, go north into the garden to see someone you know. Maria says this Tower contains memories of souls from people around the world. Take the northeast stairs going up. The Cross Eye enemies you find have a good attack, but the Restless Armour’s are what you really need to watch. They are faster, and take off the most damage. The worst part is they have a good critical hit rate, probably something like 10-15% of their hits. They can then take off 60-70, slaughtering your weaker characters in one shot.
South for 650 gold coins. Return to the staircase going down, but instead go west this time and south down the narrow pathway. This nets you a staircase going up to the third floor. Take the east path on the fourth floor, which leads north to a staircase. Go south for a Phial of Magic Water, then return back to the fourth floor entrance. See the thin paths around the pit? Follow it all the way north, careful not to fall, and you will gain a Seed of Magic and a Scale Shield. Take the path west now, and then north to the northwest-corner stairs going up.
Follow the path south and east to the stairs. Hmm, as you go ahead you will see a recess in the floor. How can you cross this? Well there is an invisible path on the left or right side. Just walk across in that way (basically, just don’t go straight right across the middle or you’ll fall down a level). Grab Ra’s Mirror (Mirror of Ra from older Dragon Warrior’s). You can then use a Chimaera’s Wing to get out of here, or walk out to earn EXP and Gold. Not to mention, you won’t be able to re-enter once you leave and Maria is no longer with you. Thus you may want to recruit some monsters here, though I’m not sure which ones only
Coburg Castle
Return to the teleport just north of Abovitall Tower. Take it to return to Coburg Castle, and then make your way to the Harry-kidnap room. Use the southwest exit here to return to the courtyard, and then to the door just to the west. You are in the kitchen. West here, west more up the stairs, east to room with a soldier, and then up the stairs.
Things are fishy. The Chancellor confirms this by saying there are now two Queen Dowager’s running about with Wilbur. Up another floor. Use Ra’s Mirror on the lady to your right – the reflection is of an elderly woman. The lady on the left though is the reflection of a monster, Faux Dowager.
Start the battle with Kasap and get to work. Dowager summoned a Bag o’ laughs or Lesionnaire for the first 5 turns or so. Not a problem. But then she emitted a fierce flame for 50 damage to Hero and Harry, and a bit less to the Monsters. Fortunately she also wastes turns collecting her breath. Faux Dowager has a ton of hit points, so this battle will last a while and you’ll be burning through almost a dozen summoned monsters. Afterwards, you’ll gain 830 EXP and 500+ gold (though it may be dependent on how many monsters she summons).
After this, the powerful impostor Queen has been vanquished, and Coburg starts anew the next day. You appear at the King’s throne, with Wilbur and Harry. As you may have feared, Harry leaves your journey here to stay and help Wilbur at Coburg. After all, he’s been gone for some time. Talk to Harry to get a tombola ticket.
Fortuna
Walk back to Fortuna now. Hopefully it is night when you get there; check out the northwest shop for the Big Book of Beasts. The dwarf wants to sell it to you for a thousand instead of three thousand, so don’t say no. Check out the Armour and Weapon shops to see if any of your monsters can have upgrades. Surely there is defensive equipment you can get and you must have a bundle of Gold saved up. I bought some armour for the Heal Slime and Grudgerigar, and of course the Edged Boomerang for both.
Littlehaven
Head over to Whealbrook. Remember that first area you started off in, directly south of Whealbrook? Head there now. According to the guy by the dock, this ship is headed for the Zephyrus Continent. The Captain is here that you saw from the beginning as well. This time though you are not allowed to search the boat, the boat just heads straight for the western continent of Zephyrus.
Lodestar Harbour
Check out Monty’s Monster Center to the east of the boat if you have a monster to drop off. Search the barrels for a T’n’T Ticket. In the center of town just south of the port is an item shop with some really nice shields, that you may or may not be able to afford right now. But keep them in mind if you want to outfit a slime or even Hero.
Head to the bar to take out the Ruff Ruffian’s. Talk to this farmer guy afterward to hear out his request. There is a savage monster feasting on the crops in the village. You get 1500 Gold Coins to start off and 1500 once you complete the task. He goes back to Hay Village and you can go explore the rest of the bar. The dressing room has some ladies an a Silk Apron within.
Outside and to the church. Search the flower bed for 100 gold and a mini medal. Might want to check out the western shops. The armour shop has the Full Plate Armour and Iron Helmets, both of use. The Morning Star is the best weapon but no one in my party was able to equip it. Search the upstairs for a pair of Boxer’s, if you want.
Northeast of the harbour area is the lighthouse. Head up the stairs and search the drawer for a Mini Medal . You can look out the telescope if you like, on the very top of the lighthouse.
You can go a few different places, but since Hay was mentioned just south of here, might as well start with there.
Hay Village
Entered the village and night and saw an animal run away upon entry. Work your way east of the Inn, and look for a south path. This will lead to a white table-type structure, and you can push it. Head through for the Kamikazee Bracer, which keeps you alive in times of desperation.
The house just east of the Inn has a Seed of Strength and a Mini Medal. The guy next door will be worth talking to after these events are over, but head to the southeast of town to where the horses are, at Bailuff Bails. Go upstairs after he bumps into you, for a phial of Magic Water, a TNT Ticket and another Mini Medal. Back downstairs to talk to your buddy and Bailuff Bails.
Wolf Lair west of Hay Village
Travel northwest actually, to reach the lair. Ignore the south fork and the far east route, but take the southeast opening (grab the Mini Medal flashing on the skeleton at this intersection), then southwest for a Stone Axe. All the way southeast for the exit downstairs.
It gets a little tricky here, with pitfalls abound. Travel south and west for a Cannibox, which actually dropped a Mini Medal upon defeat. From here, just go drop down in the southern ‘pit’, and grab the Iron Cuirass right next to you. Work your way all the way to the north stairs going up, and this time go all the way south but don’t fall down. Take the stairs down, and then enter the cave. See the beast ahead? That is probably the one you are looking for. Quickly, put Bianca’s Ribbon in the Hero’s item slot.
Once the battle starts, you will see your damage is minimal. The Great Sabercat doesn’t do too much damage to you, but you can’t win the battle, so use Bianca’s Ribbon. The Great Saber Cat can smell Bianca’s scent from Bianca’s Ribbon, and starts to lick the Hero’s face. It truly is Saber. Saber then shows you the sword behind him; Pankraz’s Sword. This is quite a weapon for the Hero for some time. Saber starts off with an Iron Claw and Leather Kilt, or maybe that’s what he had in the 1st Generation. Steel Fangs might be nice for him right now. Either walk out the cave to build up EXP, or use Evac to leave.
Hay Village
Back at Hay, they aren’t too happy to see you befriended ‘that beast’. He’ll agree to give you your other 1500 Gold Coins, but they are bitter about it.
Zoomingale Town
After your excursion in Hay, you may wish to return to Lodestar Harbour to shop with your Gold Coins. Or, just rest and travel west of Lodestar Harbour a long ways, until you reach Zoomingale.
The second floor of the Inn has a Mini Medal. The weapon shop to the right has a Serpent Sword, though it’s only +2 better than Pankraz’s Sword so it’s not a good value for the Hero (though it was a huge improvement for Clayton my Mudraker). Just a tad northwest of here is a guy asking you if you are having a good time; search by him for a Seed of Agility and Mini Medal. East of here for stairs going down to the Armour Shop. The dwarf here tells you to come back at night for some nice wares.
Check the bar in the north part of town. A Tombola Ticket on the first level, and then take the stairs up. Second floor has a Seed of Magic to the left and a TNT Ticket in the center.
If you want to get into the guy’s house with all the smoke, you’ll have to go to the back on the lower level (by the guard). Get on the grass and you’ll see a route underneath. A talking cat is at the bottom of the well, with some advice, and then you can grab a Chimaera Wing before entering the door. A Phial of Magic Water as you enter, and then talk to Professor Toilen Trubble.
Agree to aid him. He wants some Lunar Zoombloom so he can get the old spell Zoom working. Professor Toilen Trubble shows you a map, and then go to sleep while you go out to get the Zoombloom. You can only go at night. Grab the Medicinal Herb downstairs and leave.
The route to the Lunar Zoombloom is a good deal west, over bridges and down steps, all the way to the coast. Again, it has to be night time to see the shining Lunar Zoombloom. Check the Dragon Quest V DS picture below for the exact location. Use a Chimaera Wing if you need to hurry back, or walk back for the experience / gold / potential monster recruits.
Back at Zoomingale, return to the sleeping Professor Toilen Trubble, who will quickly get up to try the ingredient with his concoction. Once he throws that in there, a bunch of smoke starts rushing up along with some neat colors. The Professor is skeptical and the game won’t let you leave; you have to open your menu and it seems Zoom is in the Hero’s spell list, so use it.
Return to Zoomingale at night, and go to the Bar. Head to the second floor, and go in the room towards the east end before the church, with the single guy in there. He’s drinking Zoomshine. Now go to Professor Toilen Trubble and when he asks about a new spell, say no. He will instead give you a Bottle of Zoomshine.
Hay Village
Returned to Hay Village, to the hut just south of the Item Shop (with the guy and his Terrorcrow). He’ll tell you to take it, so go outside and east to the garden and take that scarecrow out from the ground. You’ve acquired another Knick Knack item.
You will notice your Zoom list does not have Hay, Heaven’s Above Abbey, Whealbrook and Roundbeck, but you can go visit them quick if you want.
Harry’s Wedding at Coburg Castle
To advance the story, we’ll have to walk / Zoom over to Coburg Castle. As you heard at Zoomingale, Harry is marrying a fine lady.
Upon entering the castle, just go up the northwest stairs, east, and then up another set of stairs to get to the throne room. The chancellor mentions Mostroferrato, where Rodrigo Briscoletti lives. King Wilbur has more news about Mostroferrato, evidently a shield relating to the legendary Hero is there. Fortunately, this village is in the western continent that we were just on (Southern Zephyrus), just south of Zoomingale. Before heading out, go say hi to Harry upstairs.
As you may have guessed, Harry has wed Maria, the other person you escaped slavery with. Harry tells you he has a gift for you in his old room. Sure enough, go to what is now Queen Dowager’s room to open the treasure and read the note. Return to Harry and he gives you the beautifully crafted Marital Organ. After this, Harry and Maria ask a lot of questions about your own marriage (just like real life). But you can get the idea that that’s probably something in your future as this is named Hand of the Heavenly Bridge.
Scuttlebutt
When you are ready to move on, Zoom over to Zoomingale. Travel south, and the path with narrow as you move through the desert. Up ahead you should see a small hut, so enter.
A Tombola Ticket in the jars to the right. Check out the well for a Mini Medal. Stay at the Inn and rest. You will hear lots of talk about Nera moving back home. The farmer outside the building will tell you that Mostroferrato is south through the cave (if it’s day time). Before you leave, check right by the Innkeeper for a Scuttlebutt Alledger, yet another Knick Knack item.
Cave southwest of Scuttlebutt
This cave is short. The southwest path leads to the stairs up, but take the southeast path (not the east path) to reach a mini medal. One thing to note is that if you did not go back to see Harry before this, a guard will stop you from progressing. If you met Harry, just take that southwest exit out.
Mostroferrato
Head south some more, looking for a west route to the ancient stronghold of the Briscoletti family. Bingo the dog runs up to you as you get in the town, along with a lovely lady. Just talking to a few people you learn about Mr. Briscoletti’s intentions, searching for a man good enough to marry his daughter Nera.
The Inn has an Iron Shield. The house south of this has a Mini Medal and a Tombola Ticket, and some older folks to offer some suggestions to you. The armour shop has the Cloak of Evasions, a Dragon Quest staple, and the Top Hat, both great for magicians.
Time to head to the Briscoletti Mansion. Not the villa in the southwest, no one is there but a maid. At the mansion are the men, namely a guy you’ve heard of, Crispin Burns. I just talked to him, waited, and then talked to another guy. Then Briscoletti came downstairs and let everyone in to talk.
Debora runs down and says she doesn’t want to get married. After this, Rodrigo Briscoletti starts the meeting and says that you will need the continent rings to earn her love; the Circle of Fire and the Circle of Water Rings. As a reward, the new son-in-law will receiver the family treasure, the legendary shield.
Go to the second floor after this to find a Silver Tiara, Silk Apron, and a Tombola Ticket. Seems Nera would marry you anyway. Not much on the third floor besides the lovely Debora.
Mount Magmageddon Volcano
As you see, another suitor of Nera’s is here as well (Crispin). Take the second south path by him for 450 Gold Coins. Travel counterclockwise around the external path, all the way until you reach the northeast corner with the stairs going down. You will start to see that this place is covered in lava, that damages you slightly as you walk over it. Not much you can do about it, I doubt you have Safe Passage to negate the damage unless you leveled up like mad since Slime earns it at level 25 (which case you won’t need it anyway..)
Follow the path north and east, then north again for a T N T Ticket. If you go east of here you see a ramp leading into the lava. Heal up and take it, going southwest for a ramp up to a Staff of Antimagic. Powerful attack, not to mention it can silence spellcasters if used in battle. Return towards the beginning and this time take that south route you ignored and take it all the way to the southeast for an Iron Helmet. North of here for the stairs down.
Ignore the east path, but go north through the fire for a Seed of Resilience. Head west a bit here, eventually taking the northwest route for 1500 gold coins. Skip the path directly east of here, it is just lava and a dead end. Head southeast, but looking for the next path north through lava. Two paths and two staircases going down. Do yourself a favor and take the southeast one through the lava.
This leads to an oasis of sorts as you restore your HP / MP. Suddenly, you have a great level up spot, much like the Royal Crypt and Aktemto / Mamon Mine in Dragon Quest IV. It will not revive the dead however, so if you get a few Fierce Fires in one turn it could be trouble for a low-HP monster. But that’s why you have a monster reserve. Rest up when you are ready and go through those northeast stairs down.
Up ahead is that ring, but three Magmen come up to stop you. These guys also have that fierce fire attack mentioned above, which takes off between 30-50 damage to all allies. So hope they use a regular attack. You can put them to sleep with a spell or the Zizzwizz Pillow, and I had Bud the Grudgerigar use Kasap to lower their defense. Just assault them from this point, thankfully your allies will focus on one of them. Once you get one down, it’s easy to get control of the battle, even if you have an unlucky turn. Still, you will be sick of those Fierce Fire Breath attacks after this battle. 1050 EXP and 750 Gold are your rewards, not to mention that Circle of Fire Ring.
Hit the restoration point, then cast Evac and Zoom to get back to Briscoletti. He will reward you for that Circle of Fire by giving you access to a ship! Go outside and get in. Sail north to the gate, then east to the land with the sign. Northeast of here for Stockenbarrel.
Stockenbarrel
Head west to the item shop for a Strength Seed and a pot that is actually an urnexpected. A battle that yields nothing and the urnexpected uses Whack so it’s risky. Go to the north part of the village, and underneath that northern house for a well with a T N T Ticket.
Go inside that house now to see old Whitey. Next, Bianca runs in and the Hero will chat with her for a while. Allow her to join; sounds like she has a way to open that lock too. Her old equipment has obviously become obsolete, so get her some new stuff either by passing Monster equipment to her or buy her new things.
Before you go, check the Inn area. You’ve already seen the Cautery Sword, but not the Battle Axe (though no one I have can equip it currently). Check the bar and then the pots to the southeast part of it, for a Mini Medal. East of this house are two graves; search the east one for a Mini Medal.
Leave Stockenbarrel and get in the ship. Travel north, and Bianca will open that gate. At this point, the north bay opens up for you. Nothing really of note, although there is an island in the center. Work your way northeast in this bay and look for a path north. This leads to where you want to go.
Circle of Water Ring Caves
Bianca will have all sorts of memories to share with you along the way here. Anyway, just go north to the next area. Continue on through the winding path to the stairs going down to the east. Nice scenery in this third basement floor, with the sun shining in and a waterfall next to you. Nothing to do but head north and east to the staircase going down to basement floor 4. By the way, you have probably been poisoned by the Gastanks around here. Hero has Squelch but it helps to bring along a Slime Healer too for the added Squelch, Midheal and whatnot, especially considering the wagon cannot come here so it is only 4 characters the whole way.
Floor four, you will see some water to the northeast. Just work your way west to the staircase down to floor 5. Southwest in this room and you’ll get to two south paths that lead to the same exit. Next area, you’ll be by the waterfall. Go east to the exit.
Now you are in another watery area with a fellow explorer. Take the northern path and it will wind counterclockwise. Eventually going west you will hit a dead end, so take the south path right before the dead end. This too leads west, just a little south from the path that hugs the wall. You will soon be on some brown dirt, by a staircase going down. But look south for a huge hole. Drop down this hole, then go south to the outside. You will see the waterfall again as you go east, and will find a valuable Robe of Serenity. Great for females / magician types, like Bianca.
Return into the cave, and jump down that hole. This leads you to the route you would have taken otherwise; skip the stairs up, because we’re heading down remember. So just go north to the exit, and then start heading south and through to the waterfall area.
From here, Bianca will mention something, while you work counterclockwise around the edge. Eventually in the southwest you will reach a staircase leading to the lower, watery level. Then, travel all the way north on this watery level until you see the room through the waterfall and that treasure. Take the treasure first for 1200 Gold and then go through to the north.
In this room, you see the Circle of Water Ring. Go up and take it; no bosses around. To be honest, it’s almost disappointing, this beautiful cave could have been epic if there was a bit more challenge in the regular monsters and / or a boss. Anyway though, time to use Evac and Zoom back to Mostroferrato.
Mostroferrato
Rest and save upon getting here. In fact, you may wish to prepare a few save slots here. You will see.
v
