Saiyuki Journey West

Saiyuki Journey West is a Tactical RPG put out by Koei of all people. There are lots of similarities to Final Fantasy Tactics / Tactics Ogre type games but it’s a bit more simple. You can’t really level up that well so the bosses are generally always competitive, and the final boss is brutal.

Throughout the linear route, there are bosses in nearly every battle. Each character not named Sanzo has a Were that they can change into (though this seems to be inefficient later on and I rarely used it towards the very end) to unlock powerful abilities. The characters themselves do not have classes but are unique in their own way in terms of attack, movement, speed, etc. Also, each character has an element that they are strong in magically.

The story itself is engaging enough as you are fed little by little as you travel. A big plus is the amount of side quests, secret characters and special weapons / abilities.
