Tidus the blitzballer starts his quest in Zanarkand and then begins his story as a guardian of Summoner Yuna along with Auron, Lulu, Kimahri, Wakka and Rikku. Party members are switched in and out of turn based battle. Only characters that are used acquire EXP in any particular battle but the game gives you plenty of reasons to use all or most of your characters.
There is no world map really but rather sections that Tidus and friends traverse over. Later on you'll acquire a means of accessing them easier.
The sphere grid is the levelling up aspect of the game. Each person starts off on appropriate parts of the map and can move around into eachother's paths later on, although Kimahri can choose a path right away since he doesn't really have his own. Many challenges associated with this game revolve around not using the sphere grid at all so that your characters never level up.
The game is probably 70-90 hours if you get everything. The final weapons can be extremely tedious to get but it's addicting. There is also the option of collecting all the monsters throughout the realm and fighting secret monsters (similar to the Final Fantasy 12 Hunts).
