Any time you are dealing with ice arena lighting, you are dealing with high-powered and high-wattage light bulbs with vast lumen requirements. There are some important things to keep in mind about your lighting that will underscore why you should go from fluorescent or HID to LED lighting.
– LED Lighting lasts longer. Changing the lighting in an ice arena is not easy – a lift will have to be brought in and some spots can be perilous for an installer (not to mention costly to hire someone to do so). This means it makes sense to get something that will last longer so you don’t have to replace the lighting as often.
– LED performs better in the cold. When LED lamps are cold they perform well with uniform lighting, and that lighting lasts longer in the cold as opposed to hotter conditions (where HID can perform better).
– Many hockey rinks have to have a certain amount of lighting foot-candles, particularly if the arena is going to televise a hockey game. LED is far more efficient and directed than fluorescent and HID options. This means with LED you won’t be wasting light by lighting the ceiling or the fixture that the lighting is in – it will be directed evenly downward. This even lighting distribution is better for the players as well – not as spotty and more clear.
Premier Lighting of St. Paul has retrofitted many ice arenas with LED High Bay Fixtures. If you have an interest just contact them and they will find the perfect solution for your facility.
