ParticipantYes, another guide! I got the Japanese DOAE2 and the Wu mod patched on, now I’ll see if I can make a guide for it.
I’ll be the first to admit that most of the generic enemies have the wrong names. I’m just trying to match them up with existing avatars.
______
Part 1
When starting a new game, you’ll get the same stuff about the Yellow Scarves and Dong Zhuo (notice that Cao Cao, not Liu Bei, is the one swiping at Dong Zhuo now). When you have control, you’re Sun Quan (looks like Yuan Shu sans the ‘statche). You start with Chi Tu Ma, so equip it right away so you won’t walk so slow. No one here in the throne room has anything inportant, so leave. When you reach the door, Sun Ce runs down and asks to join you; let him come along. Go outside and when you cross the bridge, Cheng Pu runs over and also asks to join you, so let him. Equip all your stuff. You’ll notice all the helpful shop pictures have been replaced by Japanese characters, but the locations are the same. Go out to the world map; you’ll notice you’re not in Xuzhou. We’ll call this city Changsha. Make sure to make Cheng Pu your tactician as his intellegence is the best; in this mod, the tactician does not change his position, so move Huang Gai to the rear. You might just want to wander around the city and build up a couple of levels. Notice that you can fight tigers in this area as well as the bandits.
When you’re ready, move northwest past the forest to two caves. Enter the top one first; it’s the Map cave from the main game. The first two chests have ~110 gold each, the left chest of the two close together has ~80 gold, the right one has a piece of armor, the far left chest has more armor, the center left chest has a weapon, the center right chest has the Map (it’s different from the main game’s Map), and the far right chest has what I think is a healing item. Spread this stuff around as you see fit, and leave the cave.
Now enter the south cave; it’s Yuan Shu’s cave. Go right at the entrence to find a chest with ~120 gold. Go back left, up, and then right to get an herbal in a chest. Go back left and straight up to find a weapon; Sun Ce can’t equip this one, so give it to Sun Quan or Cheng Pu. In the next path over is some armor; again, Sun Ce can’t wear it for some reason. Keep going north, and check the next chest for another Herbal. Keep going all the way to the back, where Huang Zu awaits.
Boss Battle: Huang Zu
Enemies: Huang Zu , Han Fu, Kuai Liang, Niu Jin, Mu Shun
This is a pretty easy fight; just pound them. Kuai Liang might use a formation, so make sure you kill the appropriate people to break out. You should have no problems.
You might be hurting after that battle, so use tactics and/or herbals to heal up. Head back to Changsha and rest, then talk to Huang Zu where Che Zhou would be standing for another boss fight.
Boss Battle: Huang Zu
Enemies: Huang Zu, 2 Guards
Easy, just like Che Zhou, even though Huang Zu’s health is higher. Just kill them.
Now go to the exit and talk to the guard there; it’s Chen Wu and he joins your party. Buy anything you need and then leave the city. Dong Zhuo and Lu Bu show up and ambush you; run away. Sun Ce and Cheng Pu are gone now. Equip Chen Wu’s stuff. Take Sun Quan and Chen Wu north to Zheng’s house near the Map cave. The man here will give you a letter if you’ve already got the Map. Now go to Yuan Shu’s cave and walk through to the other side. Get on the boat and you’ll sail north across the river.
______
Part 2
You’re in "Jizhou" now. Go to where the castle is and give the letter to "Yuan Shao" (is this Yuan Shu?). Lu Zhao will join your party now. Equip his stuff and go back to the dock. Ride the boat south to another dock and walk south to a gate. Lu Bu is here and he kills Lu Zhao. Now you’re back at Jizhou, so go into the castle and talk to the new guy here, who looks very similar to Zhang He. He’ll join up. Go back to the dock and attack the gate again. Your new party member gets the same treatment as Lu Zhao. Go back to the throne room and talk to Yuan Shao.
Now you’re at "Xuchang" as Sun Ce. Talk to the girl here, she’s Sun Ren and she’ll join up, although her stats are next to nothing. She has another Chi Tu Ma on here, so give it to Sun Ce and equip it. Talk to the guards at the exit and they’ll let you through. Go into the nearby house and talk to the man to rest, then talk to him again and he’ll give you a letter. Go to the first gate to the south and you’ll fight Lu Zheng and some guards, an easy fight. Just attack with Sun Ce and have Sun Ren use tactics. Go on to the next gate and defeat Yan Ling in the same manner. At the third gate is the wine scene, turn it down and fight a Yan Ling lookalike. Talk to the monk on your way out to rest. You can make a stop at "Luoyang" if you want to save your game.
At the fourth gate, a woman will take you back to an inn and tells you to go inside. Just give her the letter you got and you can leave without a fight. Liu Ba is at the last gate; take him out and then get on the boat. When you reach the far shore, walk north toward the village. Taishi Ci will attack you along the way. Just last against him for two turns and Sun Ce will convince him to leave. Now enter the village and rest at the inn, then go to the camp to the north. Taishi Ci is at the gate; again, just last two turns in battle, after which Taishi Ci is impressed and joins your party. Walk all the way east to "Qingzhou" where Cheng Pu will talk to you at the gate. A new person appears on the world map, so talk to him and fight Yu Jin. Enter the castle and talk to Cheng Pu to get him to rejoin. Also talk to the guy next to him, Han Dang, who joins as well. Go to the house south of Jizhou and talk to the person inside.
Back in Jizhou, Huang Gai shows up to tell Sun Jian that Sun Ce is in the southern house, and joins your party. Buy Huang Gai some weapons and armor and talk to Yuan Shao so the guards will let you leave. Deng Xian and another Zhang He lookalike will ambush you, so fight them off. Go south to the house and go upstairs where Sun Ce’s group is waiting. Talk to Sun Ce and Cheng Pu and they’ll join back up. Then leave the house, and you’re done here.
_______
Part 3
Now you’re in "Jingzhou" with all your party members (minus Sun Ren, though). Go out to the world map and head southeast to the fort, where you’ll fight a bandit leader. Kill him and head southeast to the next fort, and kill the bandit there too. Move southeast again to the last fort, where two bandits are waiting for you. When all three groups of bandits are dead, go back to Jingzhou and talk to "Liu Biao", then go north to "Xinye" (still as advanced as the main game). Leave the city and you’ll be told to go back to Jingzhou. Go to the castle and enter the bedroom to the left of the throne, and talk to Liu Biao. Someone will come up to you and tell you to leave using the secret exit in Liu Biao’s bedroom, so go through the opening into the dungeon.
Go up and to the right for an Herbal, then left to a staircase. Walk all the way left and then down to find ~60 gold. Take the other staircase back up and check the chest just below you for ~110 more gold. Go right from the staircase and follow the path down, then walk along the left path and up, taking the right path here to find another Herbal. Take the stairs down and take the lower path to find some treasure: ~100 gold, two pieces of armor, and a Power Pill. Go up the right path for ~230 gold, then take the other path for the stairs up. Take both paths for treasure and gold, then go back down the stairs and go down, right, and up to get the treasure north of the stairs. Then take the stairs up, go up for more treasure, then head left from the stairs to get out.
You’ll be back on the world map. A bridge has appeared to your left, so cross it and enter the house. Talk to the man inside and you’ll rest, then talk to him again. Leave the house and walk to the far east, past the forts, and cross the bridge at the end. Enter the house here and talk to the girl, then leave and go back to Xinye. Go to the castle and talk to the man here. Exit Xinye and walk south to the patch of forest. This area is the same as Bo Wang Po; just grab the treasures as you go through. Guan Ping and another officer are at the end.
Boss Battle: Guan Ping
Enemies: ??? (looks like Lu Zhao), Guan Ping, 3 Guards
A simple fight, although harder than the previous bosses. Just take out Guan Ping, then kill the Lu Zhao lookalike. Go all-out on the guards for the win.
Leave the forest and go back to Xinye’s throne room. The girl from the eastern house is there; talk to her and she’ll tell you to go back there. When you return there, talk to Zhou Yu and he’ll join your army. The scene shifts back to Xinye, where Sun Jian will leave your party. Go back to Bo Wang (you’ll notice Chen Wu standing around on your way out) and talk to the new people there for a fight.
Boss Battle: Liu Zhang
Enemies: Liu Zhang, ???, ???, 2 Guards
Yes, you’re fighting Liu Zhang for some reason. The flames will burn his party each turn, so just heal from their attacks and let the fire kill them.
Go back to Xinye and talk to Sun Jian. He’ll rejoin you, but Zhou Yu will leave. Go to Jingzhou and talk to Liu Biao, then talk to Cai Mao. Return to Xinye and talk to Zhou Yu; he’ll rejoin your party. Walk south to Xiakou and talk to the guy in the throne room. Sun Jian will again leave your party. Go back north to Jingzhou for a boss battle.
Boss: Chen Shu
Enemies: Chen Shu, Guo Tu, Lu Zhao, Lu Su?, Guard
This will be the first difficult battle. All of the officers here can hit hard, and Lu Su will cast Ji Mian on your party often. Pummel each officer until you can get them under 1000, then you can kill whoever’s the biggest threat. Lu Zhao tends to hit for pretty high damage, so you may want to focus on him and Lu Su first. If they are too hard for you right now, try gaining a few levels so you’ll get the next level of healing spell.
After you kill them, go inside and rest, then move on to Xinye.
Boss: Cao Hong
Enemies: Cao Hong, Liu Ye, Cao Xiu?, ???, Guard
They will always ambush you, so heal up and start fighting back. None of them are very strong, so you shouldn’t have too many problems here.
Go to the throne room and talk to the person here to learn that Zhuge Liang is asking for an alliance against Cao Cao. Go back to Xiakou and enter the castle. Zhuge Liang is here next to Sun Jian; talk to him and he’ll join your party. Leave Xiakou and take the boat south to Wu’s land.
______
Part 4
Enter Chaisang and go inside the castle. Talk to Sun Quan and the other officers to learn about Cao Cao’s fleet. Now leave Chaisang and go far to the east to a village among the mountains. Enter the third house and talk to the old man to learn about the Wind Scroll. Go back to the boat and ride it to Japan. Head north from the village to reach Mt. Fuji. When you reach the top, move toward the old man to trigger a boss battle.
Boss: Yu Ji & Mystics
All five enemies have 255 intellegence, and their attacks do huge damage despite having only 50 strength. Fun. They mostly use status magic, though. Just concentrate on one at a time until you can kill them. They have good defense, so this battle is going to take a while. Good luck, you’ll need it.
Now talk to the old man and he’ll fork over the Wind Scroll; give it to Zhuge Liang. Carefully go back through Mt. Fuji and return via the boat to Chaisang. Check the tree behind the old man in front of the castle for the Deadwood. Leave Chaisang and go northwest across the bridge to the saltpeter cave. Walk to the back and get the saltpeter, then go back to Chaisang and talk to the old man to get some Gunpowder. Walk all the way back to Xinye, go through the Bo Wang forest to the other side, and use the gunpowder on the rocks. Keep going west to Xiangyang, where you’ll fight Cai Mao.
Boss: Cai Mao
This battle is much easier than the last one. Cai Mao can be a threat, so deal with him first. The other generals are nothing to worry about.
Go inside and enter the castle, and go upstairs to the treasure room. Grab everything, including the arrowstorm, and return to Chaisang. Enter the castle and talk to each of the officers, then talk to Sun Quan. Return to the Jingzhou area and speak to Sima Hui to find out where Pang Tong is. Go southeast of Chaisang until you find an narrow strip of land leading south (there’s no waterway dungeon in this mod) and follow that south to Pang Tong’s house. Talk to Pang Tong and tell him yes, and he’ll run off to chain the ships. Go back to Chaisang and report to Sun Quan, he’ll tell you the navy is ready. Hop on the boat to go to Cao Cao’s fleet. Notice that Cao Cao has his DOAE3 avatar here, instead of his DOAE2 one. Just have Zhuge use the Wind Scroll. Cao Cao’s fleet is burned and he gets shot up with the Arrowstorm. The next battle has him fighting some random Wu generals which you can’t control. On land, he gets ambushed by Zhao Yun (also with a DOAE3 avatar) who you CAN control, if only for a couple of rounds. The next battle is just Zhang Fei, who you can control, for a couple more rounds. After a lot of scenes you’ll be back in Xiakou (Zhuge has left your party though).
______
Part 5
Go north to Jingzhou, go into the throne room and check right in front of the trone for the Tally Order, and rest up and save, then head. Zhang Liao is at Xinye, but the Tally Order doesn’t work on him, so skip Xinye and continue on to Xiangyang. Defeat the general here and go southwest to the dock. Ride the boat south and enter Yiling. You’ll fight Xu Huang and another guy. Rest up and go south from Yiling; Guan Yu is waiting for you at the pass. Talk to him to have a quick duel, then continue on. Enter the next castle and talk to the soldier at the gate; it’s Ling Tong and he joins. Enter the lower right house and talk to the guy inside to recruit who I think is Gan Ning (same sprite and avatar as Zhou Cang). Keep going on, and go south of the next castle to the cape where Gong Zhi usually is. Talk to the guy there and then return to the local castle. Walk up to the soldier who has appeared and fight him. He’ll get the Jin Xian treatment and you’ll capture the city. Go east to the next city. Zhou Yu will enter the castle by himself and gets into a battle, but some random guy runs in to help you out and you’ll easily beat them. Lu Bu somehow winds up on the throne; just leave. The guys you just beat up will be north of the castle, so you’ll have to fight them for real this time.

ParticipantI’m going with Cheng Pu as being the other old general. He’s the only one I can think of with the right age.

ParticipantI thought the woman would be Sun Shang Xiang or something like that, not Sun Ren, who I never heard of :P

ParticipantSun Ren is SSX’s more common name.
Her avatar is a real peice of work, I must say. Hats off to the graphics people for this mod.

ParticipantMan, where the heck you get the time to play all these games and write guides for them!?
August 18, 2006 at 9:10 pm #21203Taishi Ci
ParticipantI still have a week until school starts back up, so I’m drowning in free time.
I could be using that time to try and learn Chinese or something, but that’d be too hard.
September 11, 2006 at 1:06 am #21204Zhang Lu
ParticipantThe battle with Zhang Fei at Han Zhong is next to impossible. Even with a good fire tactic, I can’t get my attacks off and successful without losing someone each turn.

ParticipantI have another tidbit for you. Zheng letter tricks, Wu Version!
Where you usually got Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei, that citadel now gives you Sun Ce.
"Luo Yang" now gives you Yu Ji. MYSTIC FUN! :D
*More to come*

ParticipantI’ve never actually used the Zheng letter trick before. But if I did, Yu Ji would be the first guy I’d add. His cheapness knows no limits.
September 13, 2006 at 1:24 am #21208thechieftain
ParticipantI think the Zheng letter trick might the single coolest glitch in almost any game ever.
September 13, 2006 at 7:34 pm #21209Zhang Lu
ParticipantAnother nice bit…when you get Yu Ji, it makes the mystics battle easier, but now I hope I can still get the Wind Scroll…
EDIT: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…you can’t get the Wind Scroll. If you get Yu Ji, you’re stuck! :(
Goddammit, I gotta start all over again.

ParticipantSorry, I told you. Even when he’s on your side, Yu Ji is the master of cheapness.
September 13, 2006 at 9:45 pm #21211Zhang Lu
ParticipantSince I gotta start over, I’ll have to wait until just before the Wu attack on Wei to use the Zheng Letter.
I’ll start that tonight and we’ll see what happens.
A note: When you fight Zhang Liao at Xin Ye, he IS beatable. Have Zhou Yu and any other smart officers use tactics. If you’re lucky, one or two will hit, basically taking Zhang Liao’s soldier count down to half. Go all out, and you SHOULD win. This allows you to get Lu Meng.
