I know some research has been done into Huo Hu, but after one of Fallout’s posts I did a bit more research.
Known: His hanzi are 火虎 (ka ko in Japanese, at least) which doesn’t match up with basically any other person of the time.
In fact, the Japanese wikipedia entry for the DoaE series specifically states:
劉備の部下としてオリジナルキャラクター（火虎など）が登場する。
"Some original characters (such as Huo Hu) make appearances as Liu Bei’s subordinates."
Another article I found added that the "new" characters "can’t really do much before they die".
Another interesting post I found:
馬超は原作で出てきた火虎とかいう火薬使うオリジナルキャラのを持ってきたみたい。
ＦＣ版１にも火虎でてきたけど、普通の軍師系の顔だね。
I, er, actually can’t figure this sentence out for certain. It starts out talking about Ma Chao, but talks about Huo Hu being a "gunpowder-user".
Best I can do:
"Ma Chao used gunpowder, along with new characters that appeared such as Huo Hu."
Then it goes on, "Huo Hu was also in the Famicom (NES) edition, but had the face of an ordinary strategist."

The other version they’re speaking of is evidently a version of DoaE for the Japan-only PC-88. The wikipedia entry I linked earlier in this post informs that the PC-88 version involves the extermination of "magic monsters".
You know what, this merits its own topic. I may investigate this magical PC-88 version sometime soon…
/edit: I realized some may see more mystery here than even I do :)
here are the versions of Tenshi wo Kurau (aka DoaE) from the JP wiki:
1) PC-88 version. RPG. Liu Bei and friends move as generals to combat original magical monsters.
2) 1st NES DoaE. RPG. Soldiers are HP, the more followers you have the more damage you do.
3) 2nd NES DoaE. RPG.
4) SNES DoaE3. Simulation.
5) GB DoaE. RPG.
6) "Tenchi wo Kurau" arcade. Action game. 2-P simultaneous play.
7) "Tenchi wo Kurau 2" arcade. Action game, similar to Final Fight.
8) "Tenchi wo Kurau" PC-Engine. Similar to TwK1 arcade, with smaller characters and single-player only.
So Huo Hu’s identity really is a mystery then.
The fact that they say "but had the face of an ordinary strategist" leads me to believe he’s real and deserving of a more grand avatar.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackinga new huo hu mod!!! :lol: gunpowder was actually discovered first in china a very long time ago. they used it for fireworks, however.
Well, after nearly an hour of searching, this is the *only* info I could even find on the PC88 version of Tenchi wo Kurau.
Evidently it’s impossible to find any ROMs of this stuff, much less any reviews, much less any info on Huo Hu’s role in the game.
About all I can glean from this is that it is an action/rpg of some flavor, probably similar to the Ys games. It also seems to be based (like DoaE) on Yokoyama Mitsuteru’s Sangokushi manga. Beyond that, I’ve got nothing.

oh man, that cracked me up. I love katakana words that you’d think they would have just said in their own language.
Alright, I’ve got nothing to actually add to this, so I’ll go back to Huo Hu and Other Games now.
why waste time researching if he is real, why can’t you guys accept the fact that he is made up(im seriously asking, dont give some bs answer)?
Cause it’s Huo Hu. It’s important. We know he’s made up from something else so maybe we can find out more about the original Huo Hu from that PC-88 game.

Agreed. This is an important research project!
the only thing that i could find was that they used gunpowder for flares and bombs, like to let the army know that the ambush was on. that however, does not narrow anything down, and for that, i suck…
