ParticipantYes, it’s on PS1. I have the Japanese version. The English version also came out. The game is like FFT and gets really fucking boring as the game progresses.

KeymasterHmm, a game like FFT but it’s not good? The guy emailed me and I couldn’t figure out if he wanted me to put it on here or just wondered if it was on lordyuanshu.com.
PS1 eh, so much for trying it on emulator.

ParticipantThere are PS1 emulators. They work perfectly actually.
As for being like FFT and sucking, I meant that the FFT style games suck. They get boring real quick. The battles are so slow and the difficulty’s about as high as the Barbie games.

ModeratorI have a copy of the game. It’s incredibly rare, I hadn’t heard about it until a friend (who’s a huge Journey West fan but never read the book) mentioned it to me about 2.5 years ago. That was about when PSX games stopped being sold in stores. A strategy game from Koei I hadn’t heard about? I had to get it.
If you go along comparing it to FF Tactics, yeah, it’ll seem rather lackluster. But honestly, FFT is the best tactical RPG out there.
In Saiyuki, there are no job-equivalents, but each character is unique. There are a few mutually-exclusive characters to get (i.e. you get 2 by going on one path, 2 through another) and some upgrades you can make to characters. It’s basically an upgraded Shining Force-type with some neat takes on magic and elements based on the Taoist five elements.
The main thing that kept me playing was the game’s visuals and music, honestly. The gameplay is fun enough for a while but like many tactical RPGs becomes more and more tedious. The plot’s neat, but it is quite loosely based on Journey West (i.e. add magic, switch around a few characters, make a main villain and have characters who aren’t Sun Wukong actually be useful sometimes). The game also uses the Japanese names for all the characters, which can get annoying.
But yeah, the game is really beautiful to watch and the music is good, too. It’s very relaxing, and the game’s not too difficult til the end.
It drags on during the 4th or 5th sub-area of the world map, but the plot picks up very well at the end. The game’s not incredibly long either.

KeymasterWell thanks to Niahak, I now have and am playing this game. It is good looking but unfortunately I can’t seem to find the screenshot function for ePSXe
edit – Turns out I’m not completely incompetent as I did find a screenshot thing that works nicely. http://www.lordyuanshu.com/saiyuki_journey_west/saiyuki_journey_west_faq_guide.html
The game does seem a bit easy, and very FFT-like although it’s a bit slow in it’s battles. The visuals, music and overall setting are entertaining so far.
The text is messed up though. Look below. The text is left over from what a person says earlier.

ParticipantI believe that is a glitch from the emulator. It’s readable unlike my Japanese version. I had to read the plot in a walkthru. I’m actually surprised someone went out of their way to completely translate the damn thing.

ModeratorYeah, now that I see it, it’s definitely an emulator problem.
Here’s what I found with a quick googling (sounds dirty…):
"Saiyuki Journey West (NTSC): Change the Framebuffer access mode if the bottom of the screen does not display properly."
Try that?

KeymasterYep you’re flawless Niahak. There are 5 options and of course the last one (Full Software drawing) is what works. Thank you now I don’t have to filter through the text (it was even worse on the status screen, you can tell with the Sun Goku picture on the walkthrough).
