ParticipantDoes anyone else really hate this?
Well, I don’t exactly hate it, but most of the time it’s hit or miss. Like, Brave Fencer Musashi, GOD HAND, and most fighting games pull off voice acting quite well. However, Dragon "Quest" VIII (god, I hate Brit voices), FFX, FFXI, and most RPGs besides Star Ocean 2 really annoy me. I guess I prefer to imagine how the voices should be instead of listening to a stock voice actor who has been in a billion other things.
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby

ParticipantI enjoy bad voice acting, but I hate bland voice acting.

ParticipantVoice acting is fine if it’s good (it doesn’t have to be Metal Gear Solid good, just not bad enough to make my ears bleed) or if I can turn it off/change to Japanese. Although, sometimes the voice acting in certain games can be laughably bad… like Dynasty Warriors 2.

ModeratorA shooting game called Castle Shikigami 2 was released a couple years ago at an initial price of $10.
It featured a babelfished script, and the voice actors were competent (okay, so only one of them was actually good)… but were so confused that the game is just awesome to play.
"My name is Ko. Beating down evil!"
"I’m an American. I work, pay taxes, and I always vote!"
Half of the actors were just confused and seem unsure of their lines. About a third tried to expand on those lines to give them some semblance of meaning. The rest were somehow confident and read the lines "as intended".
It’s not a bad game in itself, but the voice acting alone was more than worth the $10.
Other than that… I’ve enjoyed the voice acting in only more recent console games, pretty much. I like DQ8’s, because it lends some flavor to the game and was good quality. Rogue Galaxy and Suikoden V are pretty good, too.
Lots of older games had atrocious stuff. Grandia was god-awful. It wasn’t even so bad it was good, I think it went full-circle to being bad and I found it painful to listen to (only 2 characters were almost good; both left the party permanently). Even Growlanser 2 and 3 weren’t that good. I’ve played a couple Japanese games on the Saturn and they are *really* high-quality… but I guess that only reached this side of the pacific recently.
Lots of earlier PC games had good VAs, though. Both Jagged Alliance games, for example, and the Fallouts were pretty decent as well.

ParticipantBad voice acting’s a guilty pleasure for me. I get quite a bit of enjoyment from it, but would be embarrassed to play some of my games with more horrendous voice acting while other people are in the room.

ParticipantBad voice acting is some what a bad thing, judging by the person who gets it. Like someone who had a great voice to begin with than gets his/her change on that. I’ve seen this happen a lot in Soul Caliber games. Also you misspelled Games (again)

similar to that, I find it hard to play pretty much any anime-inspired jRPG without headphones with other people in the room because, well, the dialogue and voice acting is just so fucking terrible

ParticipantI guess I forgot to mention that I also really enjoy well done voice acting as well, if a game’s ambitious enough to warrant it.
Also you misspelled Games (again)
It’s intentional.

Most of the time, but some of the enemies said certain lines really blandly. "I’m not hurt" being a hit or miss among them that I’m recalling.

ParticipantI’ve only had them say "I’m not hurt" after either hitting me with like a haymaker or repeatedly punching me in the fragile external genitalia. So yeah, that one is pretty awkward, but I mean "You’re not Alexander!" takes the cake.

Yeah, after being a guest on Commie’s forum, I’ve seen Gamyes all over the place. Also the voice acting that never get’s old his Street Fighter.

Voice acting steals men’s souls, and make them their slaves. Mankind ill needs voice acting like Castlevania Symphony of The Night!

Participantelder scrolls 4: oblivion’s voice acting is quite irritating.
