ParticipantAll Hail and bow to the Lord Shu! Howdy peeps! It’s been a while and salutations to All! Just started Wild Arms-AlterCode F last week and I gotta say it’s got me hooked. Anybody ever check it out? Had to find somethin till FF 12 arrives. Peace.
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby

ParticipantHaven’t played it, but I’ve played Wild ARMS 1 and 3 so I have an idea of what it’d be like. Good series.

ParticipantThe game is good but I just get hooked on the puzzle boxes. Dam………obsessed is more accurate. They were called Millenium Puzzles before, just puzzle boxes here. Hell, I want a WHOLE CART of just the puzzle boxes!!! :D

ParticipantMan I loved the first and second wild arms, but haven’t been able to get into it since. They were good games but I guess as I grew up the lackluster wore off.

KeymasterYes, I prefered Wild Arms when there were no other RPGs out other than Beyond the Beyond, Suikoden and Vandal Hearts.

Participantah yes the first gereration of the next gen rpg, beyind the beyond was great for some reason. I remember being stuck for days and days and that part where you had to make figure eight around some rocks, I didn’t mind when I had do do thaat in final fantasy adventure but I ended up having to call one of those old 900 numbers for game tips.

ParticipantI’m proud to say I’ve never used a 900 number. I just consult GameFAQs most of the time (sadly, there are some guides out there even the mighty CJayC lacks).
Suikoden was out before Final Fantasy VII? News to me.

ParticipantYeah, when I was younger and all my friends were playing fighting games, and before I had a computer or even knew where to look for stuff I had no choice. My mom was pissedat the phone bill, it was something like 2.99 a minutes and you spent at least 5 on hold. oh the days of youth.

KeymasterI’ve used a 900 number once, when I was playing Shining Force 2 and I wanted to know what to do with the Mithril (this was earlier 1990’s, pre-internet).
As for Suikoden, I think it came out in late 96 while FFVII was sometime in Fall 1997.

Participantyes back in the day, 900 number were the only way to get anywhere if you were stuck in a game. Funny ow with the internet you can get almost anything you want for free nowadays.

ModeratorSorry to bump, but I didn’t want to create an entirely new Wild Arms topic.
I got back into Wild ARMs just before the start of the summer; I replayed it through to the end (though my copy started dying near the end) and I enjoyed it so much the third (fourth?) time around that I wanted to play through the series.
I ended up playing 3, ACF, 4, and 2 in that order and finally finished around a month ago. Wild ARMs Alter Code F is the best remake of any game I’ve ever played, and is a good game in its own right despite its terrible translation. I don’t think I’ve ever liked a game as much as ACF, which is rather odd because it’s lacking in some ways. I didn’t even enjoy Suikoden V as much, which says a lot. It’s sad that the game’s a bit expensive. I went on to import the WA ACF artbook, two soundtracks and a manga (the first time I’ve ever imported anything game-related from a store). Incidentally, I got my avatar from the artbook.
2 and 3 are both pretty good, but 4 is sadly not quite as good.
I wrote an article a while back about the series for a site I write for which pretty much sums up my thoughts on each individual game. Otherwise I’d be perfectly happy re-writing it here :P

ParticipantYeah, Wild ARMs is a great series. My personal favorite character is Virginia’s father from WA3.
I would also like to say that Ashley is a terrible name for a male lead.
This isn’t just a Media Vision thing; Ashley Riot is the name of the main character of Vagrant Story. It’s not quite a unisex name, but they could have used something worse.

ModeratorHell yeah mega-bump!
I started playing WA ACF again this weekend.
Thoughts starting out second play-through:
The intro video in ACF is actually a lot better than the original's. It keeps the original music but the scenes are more appropriate (definitely a sad, lonely feel to the whole thing which is appropriate for much of the game).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMNrzUlRb54
No voice acting (it really could've used it – one of the few games that looks like it was built for acting but didn't have any).
Other things WA ACF does better:
Jack's past is much better fleshed out. The "extended intro" if you stay on the title screen for a while is a 7-minute scene of the fall of Arctica (couldn't find it on Youtube). You get to see the Fenril Knights die off one by one with only Jack surviving to the end.
Complaints:
No equipment. I don't know how I feel about this cause the original's equipment was really just acquire-and-equip (only accessories were real decisions to be made, but Skills fill this role here).
Fail translation :( So far they've used "star" instead of "planet" every time. I think later on they start mixing up plural/singular and pronoun genders.
Overall, though, I'm still very glad I found the game. It's a tough call whether it's better than the first; no. 1 is definitely tougher and might be more strategic. The sprites also make it clearer to see where you're going and how to figure out puzzles. On the other hand, ACF has much better overall design and seems like what 1 was intended to be.
I think I'll be playing through 2, 3 and 4 next. 2 and 3 were good (2 slightly better, I think). 4 wasn't great but it had good VAs and great dialogue sections :)

ModeratorGah, fail on the embed. Also no edit button. Did the forum break again? :(
Link to the intro movie 'til I can fix it.

KeymasterHey, the intro is pretty cool. I do like how they spruced the game up visually (and probably the story-telling / translation) but if it's easier then I don't know. That was one of the big sells for me with Wild ARMs, it was actually quite hard even some of the normal boss battles.
I'd play this, maybe if this was on the Playstation Network instead of the true Wild ARMs 1 for PSX.
You gonna play them all? Impressive. It's still gonna be a long while before I replay Wild Arms V
