I’m curious Samuel, what do the other guides have to say about Zhang Lu and the fact that you can recruit him after getting the Shu Map? Such a strange glitch.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingApril 25, 2006 at 8:18 pm #18332Taishi CiParticipantI know that some people have problems getting him, so it may be particular to certain ROMs.
What’s rather strange about that whole glitch is that Zhang Lu, who is never in your party, is the character you get, as opposed to someone like Yan Liang or Lu Su. I would think those guys would be easier to program in.
April 25, 2006 at 8:30 pm #18333Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYeah I think it’s something throughout the game that triggers it. I’d say 80 percent of the time it works for me, 20 percent it doesn’t.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingApril 25, 2006 at 9:03 pm #18334SamuelParticipantI have never heard about this glitch beforehand. It is new to me, when you, Lord Yuan Shu, mention it. The Japanese and Chinese versions players probably did not discover this glitch.
But logically speaking, I don’t think that we need to recruit Zhang Lu. His strength and intelligence are not very spectacular. Ma Liang’s intelligence (235) is much more powerful than Zhang Lu’s 190. Ma Shu’s versatility (strength 170, intelligence 210) is stronger. Zhang Lu’s 5100 HP does not mean a lot to me. I can train my guys up to level 40 and blow away the Han Zhong troops with Huo Shen, Li Fan, and Fu Sha.
In addition, players in the Chinese version spend too much time recruiting other more powerful generals. They often mention about reviving Pang Tong. I don’t know the details about this trick. But if my memory is correct, it involves with modifying the Chinese version of NES emulators rather than playing with the game’s flow.
April 25, 2006 at 9:09 pm #18335Taishi CiParticipantZhang Lu is a decent general when you get him, but I think it’s the novelty of having him in your army that’s fun, even more so if you use him at Hanzhong.
Have any of these Chinese players tried getting the Wu generals in your permanent party? They form parties for you at Chi Bi, and since Zhou Yu and Taishi Ci have avatars I could forsee them working.
April 25, 2006 at 9:11 pm #18336SamuelParticipantYes, some of them have successfully recruited Zhou Yu. I am not sure about TaiShi Ci.
April 25, 2006 at 9:14 pm #18337Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterSo these are all emulator-alterations basically?
My opinion on Zhang Lu has waned since discovering him. I thought he was really awesome and I still think he’s dominant for the Han Zhong and Shu areas but I think his usefulness runs out much sooner than I had initially thought.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingApril 25, 2006 at 9:16 pm #18338Taishi CiParticipantDoes Zhou Yu level with the party or is he static? And does revived Pang Tong level as well?
April 25, 2006 at 9:37 pm #18339SamuelParticipantTheir levels rise with the party apparently.
Sorry, I might have made a mistake. The technique does not alter emulators. Instead, it uses a technique that allow us to duplicate an item during the game. Let me try to see if I can duplicate an item in the English version. Then, I will fill in the details.
April 25, 2006 at 9:55 pm #18340SamuelParticipantOk, I just tried the technique of duplicating items and it works. There is no need to alter emulators. The technique comes with the game. Here are the steps:
Duplicate Items (I myself translate from Chinese):
1. Fill in the first general?s item list (including the one you wish to duplicate). You have to be equipped with at least a weapon.
2. Use the ?Drop? command in order to abandon the item that you wish to duplicate. Stand on the same spot.
3. Remove a weapon and equip again.
4. Use ?check? in order to pick up the abandoned item. Then, abandon it again. But the abandoned item remains in the item list.
5. ?Check? again. You successfully duplicate an item.
I successfully duplicate two steeds. Isn’t this cool? If you duplicate goodies like speed shoes, you are more powerful.
You need this technique in order to recruit people like Zhou Yu, Pang Tong, and others. Zheng’s letter is the item you need to duplicate. Then, use Zheng’s letter in front of the throne of the palace in various castles. You will then recruit different people. I hear that you recruit Pang Tong if you use Zheng’s letter in An Ding.
Now I am going to restart the game and test this technique of recruiting generals by means of Zheng’s letter.
April 25, 2006 at 10:01 pm #18341Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterOh my Samuel if what you say is true I can’t thank you enough, this is better news than finding those final weapons!
haha, the duplication works! But it wouldn’t let me drop the Tally Order…and I tried dropping the Zheng letter and it said "you shouldn’t do that!" What to do! Maybe the emulator version added that you can’t drop valuable items or something….
This duplication thing is wonderful though. I raided Chen Cang and made 5 of everything there.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingApril 26, 2006 at 4:42 am #18342SamuelParticipantYou are right, Lord Yuan Shu. I tried to drop Zheng’s letter and it says, "You must not drop this item!" Those Chinese players in the Chinese version must have altered the emulators, which I do not want to do. I regard this as dirty cheats. As you notice, some vital items cannot be dropped (e.g. Tally Order).
Anyway, we now know how powerful this technique can still be. We can duplicate any weapons, armours, helmets, shields, steeds, and scrolls we want. When you receive the Snake Spear and Fortune Shield, duplicate as many as you need. Hahaha, Zhao Yun, Ma Chao, and Zhang Bao (if you play him, I never) can launch devastating strikes. You can duplicate the Great Armour and Sky Helmet for all seven of your generals.
Moreover, you can duplicate them as the game goes along. You then save tonnes of money and time purchasing expensive arms.
But I still want to find Zheng Zong Sabre, Qing Gang Sword, and Li Guang Bow. I will definitely duplicate the Qing Gang Sword, since Jiang Wei, Zhuge Liang, Ma Liang, and Guan Xing use it. However, I won’t do it for the Zheng Zong Sabre and Li Guang Bow. What is the point when only Guan Suo uses sabres, and Huang Zong uses bows?
Medicines (Herbal, Tong Xian, Yin Xian, Jin Xian, Revival, etc.), smokes, and tents cannot be duplicated by means of this technique. They do not take up spaces in the items list like arms and steeds.
April 26, 2006 at 4:45 am #18343Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterAh, loading up all five playable characters with a Treatise, SpdShoes, and a Gauntlet sure is nice!

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingApril 26, 2006 at 6:44 am #18344SamuelParticipantIt is awesome! You can load up Jiang Wei so that each of his attack, intelligence and agility is 255. Coupling with level 99, Jiang Wei becomes the ultimate general in DOAE2.
May 2, 2006 at 2:45 pm #18345SamuelParticipantI just tried to recruit Zhang Lu and it does not work. Liu Bei tells Pang Tong that he needs to recruit three more generals. Zhang Lu does not appear at all although I followed Lord Yuan Shu’s walkthrough step by step.
Lord Yuan Shu, what type of emulator do you use? Since I use a Chinese emulator, I wonder whether it prevents me from taking advantage of this glitch.
Despite of that, it is not too big of a deal for me. Zhang Lu does not have many strong points other than his 5100 soldier count. I am satisfied with my current lineup: Zhang Fei, Ma Su, Huang Zhong, Wei Yan, Pang Tong. I have not fought Ma Chao and Ma Dai yet.
