I didn’t realize how many Baroque and Persona 3 FES preorders we had already. Guess Baroque is coming out in like a week…I think ATLUS games get more preorders since people expect them to be in limited amounts of copies.

April 4, 2008 at 1:14 am #33986thechieftainParticipantYeah I saw baroque but i am not really interested in it.
April 4, 2008 at 6:29 am #33987Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterhehe chieftain is blunt.
Well, think of Persona 3 without all the school / social stuff. Just the dungeon crawling part of it. And it’s meant to be a very scary / challenging game.

April 5, 2008 at 1:31 pm #33989thechieftainParticipantRight, baroque just reminded me of persona with no story.
April 23, 2009 at 2:42 am #33990NiahakModeratorWell, a year later I picked up Baroque.
Over the past few days I finished it. Calling it Persona with no story is a bit unfair… you pretty much have to figure out the story as you go.
The biggest complaint people had was that this game was too hard. I played it on Easy and it was a breeze (if a frantic breeze). It has a pretty interesting story, though it’s at least 5 hours before you have any idea what is going on. Definitely a head-spinner, but worth playing.
April 27, 2009 at 4:14 am #33991Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterSounds weird that you have to die to advance the story. It was easy though? People did make it sound hard, or more like unforgiving with losing all your stuff when you die for example.
Were you playing with your wii? huohu Or the PS2 version?

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingApril 27, 2009 at 10:19 pm #33992NiahakModeratorOh, I was playing with my wii. I’ve been doing that even more than usual lately between this and New Horizons :huohu:
You don’t actually have to die to advance the story; it might help things go a bit faster in a couple circumstances, but that’s about it.
You do lose all your stuff when you die, but there are a bunch of ways to preserve useful things. I got really good armor my second go into the dungeon, and I kept it through to the end because I sent it back to town before things got too risky.
I can confirm that on Easy mode (vs. Normal or Hard) it was really easy for a dungeon crawler.
June 25, 2009 at 7:31 am #33993UltraCraig64ParticipantI see Baroque for Wii all the time in my local GAYstop, and am afraid to try it because it got slammed in an IGN review, I think. Anyone want to reassure me that it's a good time?

A game like that is naturally going to do poorly in reviews – not 'fun' enough, not enough innovation (though it does seem unique actually). Sounds a tad difficult and the story isn't completely coherent but it's unique (and probably cheap).

I really like the artwork of the game, judging from the screenshots. The style really lends itself to the Baroque period (hmmm, about 1600-1750?), coupled with a hint of anime flair. Thankfully, this flair is nowhere near being at the Tetsuya Nomura level, where one wants to clock the guy for his extremely femmy and nauseatingly trendy characters. I know graphics aren't everything, but aesthetic beauty in a game sure can be inviting.

June 25, 2009 at 3:58 pm #33996Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterThen get it. It's on Wii or PS2.
Oh by the way, if anyone has even just a pic or two of gameplay for this game they should hit me up, I'd like to get it on the site (I have a Baroque page somewhere). If not that's cool too, we'll live.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJune 25, 2009 at 9:19 pm #33997NiahakModeratorCraig – the artwork and style are very nice, but you should be aware it's a Roguelike (like Shiren the Wanderer, Azure Dreams, and a bunch of Western games). Play it on Easy unless you're looking for a lot of pain :)
Even now I'm still thinking about the game's story. It's that head-spinny. It's pretty deep for how briefly it is told. I ended up buying the manga (sadly not published over here) just to flesh out the story some.
The entire style of the game is very creepy – more so than Silent Hill. You only meet three (possibly four) other characters that are recognizably human; every other being in the world is a twisted abomination of some flavor.
June 26, 2009 at 12:08 pm #33998UltraCraig64ParticipantExcellent. I am in love with the Silent Hill graphical style. I've played the first two games in the series, I and can safely say that the artwork practically makes the games. Especially Silent Hill 2, since it's such a big, boring scare-tease. Not to say both games aren't good fun, but nah' mean??
