ParticipantJohn Woo to live next to Gong Li in Beijing
February 2005
John Woo is going to move to Beijing in order to shoot his new film "Battle of the Red Cliff".
Invested by Asian Union Film & Media, the big budget film "Battle of the Red Cliff" is going to be directed by John Woo. Since it will probably take more than a year to make the film, Woo and his family have decided to move back to Mainland China from Hollywood. It is reported that he has bought a house in Beijing’ s eastern suburban district Shunyi. Shunyi is considered to be an upper residential area in Beijing, where a house generally costs about 550 millions RMB. Many businessmen and people in entertainment business like living in that area as it is conveniently located, not far away from golf course as well as the Beijing Capital International Airport.
It is reported that John Woo’ s new house is right next to famous Chinese actress Gong Li’ s residence. Gong Li and John Woo have never worked together before. It might be a good idea if Woo would take this opportunity to invite Gong joining the cast of the film "Battle of the Red Cliff".

05-Jan-2006 – Chow had his first true breakthrough in movies when then-obscure director John Woo cast him as a hitman in "A Better Tomorrow" in 1986. It was a hugely influential movie responsible for the birth of the Hong Kong gangster film genre. The character of Mark Gor remains one of Chow’s most popular roles. Woo also introduced Chow to Hollywood in the 1990s. This year, Chow is going to star in John Woo’s historical drama "The Battle of Red Cliff". Based on a part of the classic Chinese novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", the film features Chow as a heads-up general, Zhou Yu, who is adept in both pen and sword. Chow is practicing his horse riding skills for the role. The film is set to start shooting next May. (from english cctv.com website) pdf file

John Woo was at a film college in Hong Kong to give critique to student film projects. He received honory degree in Doctor of Social Science. There, he reconfirmed that Chow Yun-fat had committed to the Battle of Red Cliff. He also hoped that another actor, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, would be interested in signed up for the project. The third member of John Woo’s all stars Chinese actor is John Chiang. Their characters have been been set and characters are still being rewritten. And the movie will start shooting in 06.
03-Nov-2004
According to Chinese news organization, Xinhua, Chow Yun-fat was given an appearance at Hong Kong University’s Studio Class (almost like Inside the Actor’s Studio that showed in BRAVO channel) to share his filming experience with students at large. He regreted that since his arrival to Hollywood in 1996, he has not found a director that understood him and cast him accordingly. He has not done any film this year, but expected to be involved next year. And more importantly, he now does not rule out the possibility of being in involved in the Battle of Red Cliff.
03-Oct-2004
Chow Yun-fat turned down the role for Liu Bei! Though the reason is not cite in the English news, Chow Yun-fat did mention that he is no longer interested in participate war related movie in a Chinese news. Rather, his most interested project is to find a director who is willing to direct the story of Chow’s early days, specifically, his childhood. One possible director is Zhang Yimao (of Hero).
Possible candidate for Elder Qiao or Younger Qiao is Zhang Jing-chu. Zhang Jing-chu (whose surname is same as Zhang Yimao rather than Zhang Ziyi) has often been compared to Zhang Ziyi in looks. Her movie credits included Kongque (Peacock), Huayao Xinniang (Bride with Flowers Around Her Waist), and Seven Swords.

John Woo prepares battlefield for War of Red Cliff .. He has long dreamed of shooting this film, which about events that took place during the Three Kingdoms period more than 1,700 years ago. …
Comment from one of RTK Fan, Dennis Mace below
From this newer article, it appears that the budget has jumped, and it’s great to hear Jet Li’s name attached to the film, I think he’d be great as Zhao Yun (‘Zilong’, my favorite character from the story)
Either way, I’m happy to hear someone is finally going an epic feature film on San Guo. I have read the huge novel, and also have a set of the 54 VCD/84 episode "San Guo Yan Yi" Historical TV series made a few years ago in the PRC (Mandarin Language with English Subtitles). I’m hoping that since the chronological epic of the end of the Han Dynasty is so vast, that the "Red Cliff" project will continue to expand and develop into a Trilogy of the Three Kingdoms. If anyone hears of any further details on this project, please let us know–Thanks

A possible candidate for Zhou Yu – Bae Yong Joon, a Korean movie star – but according to Korean newspaper, fans opposed Bae Yong Joon to take that covet role. They felt that since Battle of Red Cliff is supposed to showcase talents of Chinese culture, it would not be right to cast a Korean into such role. They also felt that Bae Yong Joon would be exploited by foreign film company.

Already, there is the first controversy involved with the Battle of the Red Cliff movie production. Apparently, a Shanghai Movie Company is already in the work and had budget almost $30 millions USD (compared to John Woo’s version @ $36 millions USD) to it. Nonetheless, Shanghai Movie Company will continue to press ahead. Would it be two versions of the same movie, or will the two join force. I will keep you update.

The Battle of Red Cliff will focus on six key events:
Liu Bei Sympathized with Fleeing Refugees
Zhao Zilong Charged Twice into Battle in Search of Liu Chan
Kong Ming Tricked Zhou Yu to a Dare
Zhou Yu’s Stratagem, Murdered with a Borrowed Knife
Kong Ming’s Straw Boats in Moonlight Acquisition of Cao Cao’s Arrows
Borrowed Eastern Wind to Engulf the Red Cliff
The film production will be an international effort not just in terms of actors and actresses but also in production. Major hollywood production company will provide technical service. The Battle of Red Cliff is enthusiastically supported by the Chinese government which would provide majority of extra as it had done in the Hero and the House of Flying Dagger. This could be the most expensive film that ever produced by Chinese company and it would be a tribute to the upcoming hundred anniversary of Chinese cinema industry.
John Woo’s Thought:
Being in the movie industry for 30 odd years, my biggest wish is to film a cinema that really express Chinese style and culture uniqueness and to visually present the nature beauty of my country in a matchless atmosphere.
In past 10 to 20 years, I am always eagerly wanted to watch a film about Romance of the Three Kingdoms, especially the Battle of Red Cliff. Though the Oath of Peach Garden, of Liu, Guan, and Zhang formed the brotherhood, would showcase Chinese virtuous characteristic, it is unmatched to the Battle of Red Cliff which involved in several different motivations and majestic events. The later would have complex and distinguished behaviors, the brilliant displayed of military tactics and ingenuity, and conflicting motivations and situations.
Majority of my films focused on human behavior, its romanticism, and the modernism of the ancient Chinese chivalry virtues. Therefore, in my heart, the Battle of Red Cliff not only has awe inspiring and exalted nature scenery, but also capable of showcase wisdom, courage, principle, quick thinking, and ambition of Chinese people. It also able to reveal their poignancy without lost of generosity; one who is calculated, genius and audacious still maintained his mannerism; and humanity still existed in the cruelest battle. In another word, this will not be another martial art movie, yet it will contain the flair of martialism that will excite, shock, and fill with realistic battles without special effects of typical martial art movies. It can be said that on certain level, it is similar to Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic, the Seven Samurai in the sense that it can be both a martial art piece and to deeply inspired the audience.
In addition, to be able to add in midst of action, of young romantic love affair, to highlight kinship of some supporting characters, even to add some humorous interaction to make it more humane, and of the tragedy of battles. All these would make the film more attractive and more acceptable to the younger generation.
Lastly, the Battle of Red Cliff is not just another martial art film, it is a story full of history and moving moment. And it is a film for the current generation of young adults and to worldwide audience know a little bit more about China.

KeymasterYou know Zhuge, I heard about that movie somewhere on kongming.net.
Nice to see the exact scenes. I’m not the biggest fan of the Chi Bi battle as it’s overdone on all the Dynasty Warriors games….but it is the most important battle, it seems, so I can imagine it’s a worthwhile view.
I just hope it comes out here, or can be downloaded in a translated form

my favorite battle in romance of the three kingdom is the yellow turban rebellion… well they all got magic powers o.o … zhang liang turning river into ice… zhang bao magically controls the power of geysers and wind…. zhang jiao lightning…i know its fiction but its the funniest battle(when zhang jiao & company moronically waves his staff and etc.) in DW and many great effects…
EDIT: so im the only one left to know that red cliff is being recreated as a movie(i have read the news 2 days ago while browsing yahoo website)

ParticipantI have an anime on romance of the Three Kingdoms, but it’s two parts and I only have the beginning.
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby
