ModeratorFigure it's worth a topic :)
This DS game was released a week or so ago and so far I'm impressed. It's tough (+/- Phantasy Star 2 tough) but it's got a feel in the vein of Lunar or Chrono Trigger (in style, battle and plot).
It's a bit darker than most of the classics were but it's not horribly so. The characters so far seem pretty realistic.
Anyone else got their hands on it? What do you think?

ModeratorWhoops, seems I've posted this in the Bar. Also, there doesn't seem to be an Edit button for me to click on to attempt to post-note the post with my mistake :(
That's what I get for only ever browsing at the top-level I suppose.

KeymasterI saw some vids on it on youtube, it does look good. Classic style graphics / sprites.
Yea I think if you post at top level it automatically gets put in the Bar. Old LYS can change it though.

ModeratorI'm not going to lose sleep over it. If it bothers anyone please do move it though :)
This game is tedious at times, but when it's not it's really quite good. Much better combat than Tierkreis (obviously) and an enjoyable plot.
The graphical style is really nice. I love the 2-d sprite style and it would be great to see more DS games use it instead of trying for super-deformed 3-d graphics (so far… FF3, FF4, Tierkreis, DQ9, FFCC, Nostalgia, and SaGa2 use or will use 3-d. just among RPGs).

ModeratorFinished Black Sigil and y'know, I can't really recommend it.
It was fun for a while, but battles just reach the point where they're mechanical (you know exactly what you should be doing) and they occur so damned often that it's just an endless grind (except without the normal benefits – leveling doesn't help much).
If you try to fight all the battles you run into, expect to emerge from dungeons bleeding, battered, and without any items – assuming you emerge at all. If you don't fight them, you'll be bored for a long time since battles run pretty slow (to the point where you run from battles slowly too!)
Love the graphical style, liked the characters (very Lunar-esque there) and the dozens of sidequests and hidden things were neat… it's just that the battles pull everything down.
Tierkreis was better overall. More epic story and (dare I say it?) more tolerable battles.

KeymasterOh wow, amazing. I didn't think in-battle would be so disappointing, but now after reading this I don't really want to play. I know what you mean about being mechanical, I can imagine the battles. Tierkreis battles were far too easy, but at least they flowed fast especially if you just had everyone auto-attack.
The graphic style I did like, and would always prefer a 2D-type like this to the crappy pixelated 3d sprites we too often get with the FF DS' and Tierkreis.
