Lord Yuan Shu
KeymasterAfter going through the mod, I notice something strange with that guy ‘Shui Jing’. First of all, his sprite is tied to Chen Deng’s. So if you change Chen Deng’s sprite, Shui Jing’s is the same one. ALSO, I noticed if you changed references to Shui Jing’s name (like with Xu Yuanzhi), it still says Shui Jing when I go through and play it again. His name is locked in…
My first thought was that Shui Jing was tied to the tactic Shui Jing. But then I figured James or someone would have noticed that with the tactic changing done on DoaE 2.0. Maybe ‘Shui’ and ‘Jing’ are just part of the dictionary? I haven’t gone through the Hex Editor in some time, so I don’t know. But most references with ‘Jing’ in DoaE is usually ‘Jingzhou’ (in fact, they might all be).

ParticipantThat’s pretty interesting. What’s odd, though, is that I don’t recall encountering anything odd when I changed his name to Sima Hui in my game. And I think I did that by changing the word index. Did you use the Destiny of a Text Editor’s line-by-line reprocessing feature? That might have had something to do with it. Doing so introduces any bugs it may have into the text, though the only one I’m actually aware of is the now-resolved ‘Chen’ bug which changed references like Chengdu. I think it also changed [ChangAn] to [Chang] An when I ran it at some point.
No great harm, though. It is easy enough to go in and change his name manually. I remember wanting to change a city to Xiangyang, but finding myself one character short of the needed value in the dictionary. I simply changed the scripts to reference Xiangyang manually. And now that I think of it I could reclaim some bytes by using [CityName]g and changing the city reference to Xiangyan.
Pretty cool that you’ve found out Shui Jing is tied to Chen Deng, though. If I wanted to turn him into someone like Ma Teng, a warrior, all I’d have to do is find some reason for turning Chen Deng into a warrior…

KeymasterSo do you access the word index with Shui Jing through Windhex (or another hex editor)? I’m assuming that’s the case. I need to do that with the Zhou Letr – it needs to be changed to the Yuan Letr huohu

ParticipantYeah, I edit ‘Shui Jing’ in Wind Hex. That’s still our best method for editing item names, weapon names, armor names, the word index, etc. It would be awesome to have a tool that manages those things and is also capable of increasing or decreasing the length of various words within.
I changed Zhou Letr to Zhao Letr. I don’t remember what I did to it in the Cao Cao mod. I just changed the other letter to the Ma Letter.

KeymasterStrange. So Shui Jing is just a part of the word index I take it? Since he’s not an item name, weapon name, and doesn’t correspond to the tactic name Shui Jing. I mean, I’ve changed stuff that is in the word index and it doesn’t lock in like Shui Jing does (like castle names for example – I change them and it works in the game).
Ya I never understood the ‘Zhou’ Letr. Couldn’t have been too hard for them to make it Zhao so it would have actually made sense. But that would be too non-DoaE like I guess.
