Played through the mod and found it quite interesting indeed! I was a little unsure on the game reverting to the ending sequence when you give Lu Bu the Gemsword though, but I understand what you were going for (he kills you?)
I found the normal battles just to level up quite annoying. Aka, rebel forces destroying my party. I just felt those battles just slowed the game down, especially for those who have played it so many times and I have to do lots and lots of pure level grinding.
*It almost makes it necessary to find the hidden items in towns in order to win battles after nan yang unless you level grind until you get Mislead.
*I liked getting Ma Chao instead of Xu Shu. Good choice of dialogue for his leaving the party.
*Liu Chan part was funny :P But more or less I felt like I was wailing on a sack of bricks and hitting the OVERDRIVE until the battles were over. Actually it felt like this through most of Wei unless you 'Retreat' or 'Ansha" those 60,000 people. Again, almost made the game rather slow for me.

James definitely made DoaE 2.0 and Cao Cao's mod tough. The earlier versions of Cao Cao's mod that were released, I could barely beat some battles even with massive save state cheating (like Wu Ling vs. Liu Bei / Xu Shu).
I would suggest getting FCE Ultra NES emulator and using the ~ for speedup. This will greatly reduce the time you have to sit and spend grinding and make it more about getting to the tough battles and winning strategically.

Cao Cao mod is brutal which you wouldn't think to be what-with all the elite characters Wei gets, but that's probably part of why he made it so hard.
