Zhou Chao and Wang Gui are never on my emulator games anymore, what the hell is up with that? You know, the goombas in Chang An and Luo Yang respectively who you’d never use anyway….
Two Chi Tu Ma. Lord Yuan Shu is best.

On many game runs (at first I thought it was my old cartridge, but then I learned it was a flaw of the game itself) I discovered that certain items vanish early (this includes a club hidden in a house, and the sword under the Pang Tong lookalike). This early indication spells death in the future, as you will not be able to get one of the 240 attack power magic swords, but worst of all, you will not get the Halberd.
Another strange one: Just as some treasures can vanish, others can re-populate. Taking advantage of this bug can give you extra treasures! You can also use it to get an extra Iron Ore?which, once picked up, you can never remove from your inventory.
A cool one: If you go into a cave, the region?s enemies are locked into the game memory until your next outdoors encounter. You can use this to your advantage. Enter a cave in Dong Zhuo?s area, exit, Gullwing to Wei, and Smoke Pot to the two nasty caves at the end of the game. Once you enter, you can safely fight?and sure enough, you will only encounter enemies from Dong Zhuo?s area of the game.
I love how Pang De shows up in Wei with his Ba-Shu hitpoints.
I suspect they didn?t power him up because they didn?t want him to be powerful enough to use.
There are more?

You bring up plenty of good points. I’m with you on the vanishing item issue. However I’ve never experienced the Halberd being gone, I have noticed that the Qing Guang (in that Wei cave, probably the 240 ATP weapon you were talking about) disappears from time to time. Same with that Sword in front of Pang Tong. I also notice that some of the Swords in the Jing Zhou area re-spawn (Gui Yang and Chang Sha come to mind). I haven’t been able to get two Iron Ores but there have been probably 3 or 4 times I’ve played through the game and there wasn’t ANY Iron Ore in that chest and I had to start over. That was probably the worst bug I’ve experienced.
So you can fight a random battle around Xu Zhou, Gullwing somewhere and whichever cave you are in there will be Xu Zhou-area random battles? I never thought of doing it at the Wei cave but yeah that would save a ton of TP or Smoke Pots. I’ve used that trick when going into Dong Zhuo’s area (to make that first cave easier with Xu Zhou-area enemies) and also in that Saltpeter cave (since Wu characters have so many soldiers at this point). Useful tricks but not nearly as useful as going through the entire Wei cave without fighting Wei officers, although I usually have about 6 characters full of Smoke Pots at this point anyway.
Pang De is definitely disappointing. If only they could have given him 29,000 instead of 2,900 soldiers.

Yep, the trick applies anywhere. Same with the cave in Wu, though it isn?t nearly as helpful there as it is in Wei. It can be nice in that cave before you face Yuan Shu, however.
I started finding tricks like this shortly after I noticed that the lower your level when you recruit Zhuge Liang, the higher your maximum TP for the game. If I recall correctly, your TP at the end can be as high as just under 150, or as low as around 89. That makes a huge difference toward the end of the game when fighting Xun Yu (what do they call him, Xun Huo?) or when you face Sima Yi. At that point, I decided I would not fight a single battle I didn?t need to fight until Zhuge Liang joined my party (also the reason why I always kill poor Yuan Shu). After time, I wondered how low a level I could be when I beat the game, and I also discovered that, without leveling up, pretty much the only way to beat the final caves and defeat Sima Yi, was to use the cave trick on your way through.
May 10, 2006 at 2:41 am #17710Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterI just tried this super rebel force stuff. Gained 13 levels in one battle! Wasn’t even hard either.

Are you gonna go use the Level 51 glitch now?
May 10, 2006 at 3:13 am #17713Xian Zhu XuandeParticipantYou can?t go beyond 50, right?
I suspect the higher level cap is specific to that PC remake Samuel was talking about. It makes sense when you hear horror stories about Zhou Yu having over 20,000 soldiers?
May 10, 2006 at 5:58 am #17714Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYes, that is correct, I am "stuck" at 51.
Seriously, that took like 5 or 6 battles total to get from the lowest level possible at that point in the game to the max level. You guys are so spoiled getting to use this. Pretty big space to find it; I bet a lot of people find this naturally.
Other than this the game seems exactly the same. Nothing different, other than I’m having a hell of a time trying to figure out what items/weapons/spells I have.

I?m going to be starting my Japanese game soon, so we?ll see what happens (and just how stubborn I can really be when it comes down to a project like that).
May 10, 2006 at 4:56 pm #17716Xian Zhu XuandeParticipantRandom note: The Guo Ji bug doesn?t seem to exist in the Japanese DoaE.
May 10, 2006 at 5:15 pm #17717Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYeah, Wang Gui/Zhou Chao/Guo Ji weren’t on the first two Japanese quests I played.

You mean you didn?t encounter them at all? My situation was different?I did everything I could to avoid encountering Guo Ji, but he was there every single time I attempted the battle. I finally got to a point where I gave up?
