A few years back, I completed the DOAE Lowest Level Challenge. My run was actually the best one known on the internet at the time. Like Mr. LYS, I had completed the game with no power pills or Pang Tong, but I also had perhaps the lowest possible experience total by making certain to fight Han Zhong with just one rebel force, as well as, the big one, COMPLETELY avoiding Lu Bu in Shu. Smoke pot abuse was in full effect there. Unfortunately, when I emailed James the files back in 2008, he was very busy at the time. I eventually forgot all about it as real life took over, and thus, my run never got recorded on http://www.kongming.net. By the way, guys — I still have all the necessary files providing proof for this run. But far more importantly, I still have the files providing proof of my completion of DOAE 2 at the lowest possible level (41 pre-final battle, 42 post)! But it’s all good, because now I plan to attempt the DOAE Lowest Level Challenge on the greatest proposed difficulty level. This means no shops, ever. I am going to want to pull out my few remaining hairs over this one! My unrecognized run is not the best anymore anyway, as someone going by the handle WillBloodworth very recently completed a DOAE Lowest Level Challenge using no shops for euqipment, but still allowing the purchase of resurrects, gullwings and smoke pots. http://www.insanedifficulty.com/board/index.php?/topic/4083-destiny-of-an-emperor-challenge/
In my previous run, I recall having completely avoided encountering Pang Tong by not speaking to that man in Ling Ling who tells you that Pang Tong went out with his soldiers. I must remember to absolutely NOT speak to that man, or Pang Tong will hound me all throughout Jing Zhou and Shu. Many times, this random encounter even appears to be inescapable, so if I mess up and activate Pang Tong encounters during this attempt, seriously… I will have to either continue from an earlier save file if possible, or create a new file and start over. Secondly, generally speaking, I can’t let characters die. After all, I won’t be able to buy any resurrect potions to restore them. And sleeping at inns does not revive anyone. I’m not sure how useful this will turn out, but perhaps there will be instances where I plan to put a certain character in billeting immediately following a battle. In this case, I won’t have to worry about keeping them alive. Hey, I need all the help I can get, here. Thus, I may want to consider using non-tiger generals as fodder in certain battles where it will be near-impossible not to have casualties (the Zhou Yu battle comes to mind). The Zhou Yu battle will also be especially bad, because I won’t have access to gullwings. This means that I will have to completely trek across Shu in order to fight him, each time I reset. This dilemma is then compounded by not having access to smoke pots. If anyone knows a way around this, please share. And of course, I will be executing Yuan Shu to keep the experience earned at the lowest amount.
Because I am not using shops, my characters will be at no defense to low defense for most of the game. Only two or three characters will even get a cap and robe for the majority of the game, providing a paltry 40 defense. The rest will just have to settle with a robe for 20 defense. So long as my game isn’t bugged, then having decent weapons at all times is actually still very much attainable. The best weapons in the game are generally found, and they are fairly abundant if you know the secret locations in towns and forts, and you frequent the caves. Oh, and given the circumstances, i won’t be feeling too guilty about hiring and using Lu Bu or any other general that can be acquired without an optional battle. I won’t get too bent up over potential An Sha abuse, either. And I will absolutely be picking up the swordsmith swords. I have to fight Lu Bu in Shu this time, because I won’t have the use of smoke pots to avoid him. I will also try to get a clean run where there are no missing items as well as duplicate ones, just so there are no possible complications. Even if it led me to getting a second Halberd, that doesn’t feel appropriate for this challenge. I will not manipulate the game to get 5 tp each level-up. I will just have to deal with whatever the game gives me. I will be selling off items as I see fit, since I don’t think that is what was meant by no shops. I simply won’t buy anything. I also won’t be buying any food, which is absolutely unneeded for players who aren’t wandering back and forth to get into battles. Obviously, I will still be using inns. The game would not be possible to complete without them. Although I will sell off any power pills I get, I guess any found potions or other items are fair game. Lastly, I will be posting pics of all the battles from each area, showing the party I used in each one. I will keep you guys posted periodically with my progress.

November 19, 2013 at 9:13 am #52709MiDKnighTModeratorNice! I used to love these DoaE challenges before the mods really took off. My favorite challenge was the only using enemy generals challenge (ie…no Zhang Fei or his son, no Guan Yu or his son, no Zhao Yun, etc…)

Yea, this is the kind of stuff that started DoaE hacking. Huo Hu’s adventure lol. Where only the Song Bros, Huo Hu, Yang Jin, and all those made-up guys gained soldiers.

I played through a few of thr hacks in the early days, when it seemed that just about all of us were getting in on the fun. The editing tools were a lot more basic, and thus, so were the hacks. I had been meaning to play James’ 2.0 hack for a long time, after some initial beta testing. I believe he was the first to really push thr hackint envelope, and largely without any tools from Niahak. Now a few others seem to have gotten involved in such grandiose hacks, so I will be curious to check those out one day, too. Hhhjjjj Next on my list after this challenge is to complete the alternate officers challenge.

I tried posting on my Galaxy S4 and wasn’t able to space or edit as I wanted, and am now unable to edit or delete the post. I would like to repost later with more info. Thanks.

November 19, 2013 at 7:03 pm #52713sonic.penguinModeratorIf you do not stop at any of the shops, I would anticipate you could experience 1-hit kills, granted I could be wrong considering how long it has been since I played the original DOAE. Perhaps I’m forgetting how easy it was… I remember doing a run where I went All-Out for every boss battle for the entire game which was entirely possible if Sima Yi didn’t heal himself, but it WAS possible, just random.
Good luck on the no-shop visiting attempt, but I would assume you would be using the items found in houses and hidden ones as well?
November 19, 2013 at 8:14 pm #52714unfyModeratorWillbloodworth (on twitch) recently did a similar run.
Think he allowed buying only ressurects and gullwings (no armor/pp/etc). No extra-than-necessary fights (so no in town fights, no pang tong etc). Not sure if he allowed himself smoke pots or not.
The last five fights:

edit:
The run seemed enjoyable for the most part. If ya like resets and hoping for good RNG while going about the game casually as a time burner, seems like it’d be an alright way to pass time and add a feather in your cap.

November 19, 2013 at 10:18 pm #52717UltraCraig64ParticipantYes, I am using all found items except for any power pills I come across. If I didn’t, then I don’t think it would even be possible to complete the game lol.

November 27, 2013 at 6:39 am #52729UltraCraig64ParticipantIs there a way to PM people on this forum? This would be particularly helpful. By the way, ladies, I am actually up to the second battle with Cao Pi now. Good God, this is beyond beyond! The amount of luck needed to pull this off, and even to reach each battle, and, prior to Gui Huan, to survive the journey back to an inn and save spot following minor battles, because you WILL need to go back to heal up and save before major boss battles… I have taken screenshots of the beginning of each battle, so you can all see the party I used for all fights, as well as how much HP everyone had to work with. I am just not sure how to upload photos on here. Anyway, someone please contact me, possibly Lord Yuan Shu. And James, I definitely want to speak to you!

November 27, 2013 at 2:09 pm #52735Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterHey Craig,
I tested the attachment feature (which is below where you post). Doesn’t work. You are also right about PM’s; I don’t see a function for that right now either. I can probably find a way to do that though. But for now, just send me an email at lordyuanshu at gmail and attach the images you would like. I can either post them separately or add them into a post of yours if you’d like.
edit: Did some research looking for Private Messaging. Somehow, the knuckleheads who make bbPRess don’t feel it is a necessary component for the forum. Just my two cents, but those people are out of touch with what people actually value in a forum software. bbPress is light and clean and that is all well and good, but I don’t think it’d be tough for them to create a private messaging function. Instead, they just linked all the people asking about it on their support forum to BuddyPress integration which does have private messaging (but then that’s a whole other can of worms getting that set up and integrated).
So yea, no PM’s for the time being unfortunately :bon: Quite pathetic indeed..
