NOTE: Just like my DOAE3 walkthrough, I make no promises that any specific parts of the story are correct. I’m just making guesses based on my knowledge of ROTK. Besides, without some plot points, the guide would be as boring as…well, as my DOAE:GB guide.

Chapter 1: Coalition against Dong Zhuo
As the game begins, Dong Zhuo has removed the young Emperor Shang from the throne, replacing him with his relative Emperor Xian. In the throne room at Luo Yang, Dong Zhuo does a little chatting with the new Emperor before heading out, and Xian talks to a couple of Han officers.
In nearby Chen Liu, Cao Cao calls together Han governers to battle Dong Zhuo and save the Emperor. Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu, Tao Qian, Kong Rong, and Gongsun Zan arrive to help, with Gongsun Zan bringing his friend Liu Bei and his sworn brothers Guan Yu and Zhang Fei.
Back in the capital, Dong Zhuo has received word of the coalition. Hua Xiong volunteers to stop the enemy army and heads out to Fan Shui Gate, but Lu Bu doubts his ability and goes to guard Hu Lao Gate.
At the army camp, Yuan Shao (elected leader of the coalition) asks who will go out to battle Hua Xiong. Liu Bei volunteers. Yuan Shu expresses his doubts about Liu Bei’s ability, but Gongsun Zan defends you. Cao Cao gives you 500 yuan, and Gongsun Zan wishes you luck.
Now that you can walk around, you can talk to people and access the menu. The other governers will just say a few words, but make sure to speak to Gongsun Zan (standing above Guan Yu) and Tao Qian. The man standing at the bottom is a merchant you can buy stuff from. Make sure to equip Guan Yu’s and Zhang Fei’s weapons. Buy some equipment for Liu Bei if you think you’ll need it. Talk to Guan Yu when you’re ready. The game will prompt you to save, in case you forgot.
Battle 1: Fan Shui Gate
Hua Xiong’s forces are spread out around the Fan Shui Gate to the left side of the map, while Liu Bei’s troops are on the far right, near a village next to a river. If you spoke to Gongsun Zan and Tao Qian in the camp, they’ll be in the battle too, just across the river from you. You can’t control them, though. Send Guan Yu and Zhang Fei across the bridge, with Liu Bei keeping up as much as he can. Gongsun Zan and Tao Qian will rush forward and attack the front line. Hua Xiong’s front troops should move to engage them, while his rear camp stays put. On your next turn, move forward and help Gongsun Zan and Tao Qian with the enemy. Guan Yu and Zhang Fei don’t know any spells yet, so just attack. You should be able to dispatch these guys without too much trouble. If you start losing too much health, clump together and have Liu Bei use his heal spell. After a few turns, the rest of Hua Xiong’s forces will move forward, and they’re a little tougher, so watch out. Try to keep Gongsun Zan and Tao Qian alive, but don’t worry if they die. Hopefully, you can get all three brothers up to level 2 before the battle ends. For Hua Xiong, if you put Guan Yu next to him and wait, Guan Yu will kill him in a duel. However, killing him normally will get you more experiance plus a 100 yuan reward.
After the battle, Dong Zhuo’s forces will retreat north. The army moves on to Hu Lao Gate, where Lu Bu is waiting for them. You’ll get another chance to save before the battle.
Battle 2: Hu Lao Gate
Lu Bu’s troops are in formation to your north, while Liu Bei’s group starts out in the southwest corner. Gongsun Zan and Tao Qian start just north of you. Move north, but stick with Gongsun Zan and Tao Qian so they can help you out. The three archers will come down and snipe at you, so take them out quick before they deal too much damage. Gao Shun (the eneny cavalry) will come down soon after, so surround him and have whoever needs experiance kill him off. Gongsun Zan and Tao Qian are both already at level 6, so don’t waste experiance by letting them kill enemies. Once the area is clear, go over to Zhang Liao in the upper-left and take him out. Like Hua Xiong, Lu Bu won’t move from his spot. You can end the battle by sending Zhang Fei over to him. A duel will ensue, and the brothers chase him off. Again, you’ll lose some experiance for this, but you still get the 100 yuan reward this time.
At the capital, Dong Zhuo realizes he’s been beaten. He and Li Ru decide to cut their losses by burning the captital and fleeing to Changan. The coalition arrives in Luo Yang, but Yuan Shao refuses to pursue Dong Zhuo. Cao Cao storms out in anger, and the other lords depart as well. Gongsun Zan takes the brothers back to his province.

Chapter 2: Tensions in the North
Yuan Shao decides to conquer the North, and sends Wen Chou and Yan Liang to conquer Gongsun Zan. Gongsun Zan and one of his generals send their troops out to battle. Liu Bei and company are in a city in Gongsun Zan’s province. Head outside and you can enter one of the buildings here. Some of them are shops. If you want, you can go out the gate to the world map and enter the city to the northeast. Once you’re ready, reenter the castle in Liu Bei’s city. Chen Deng will be here, talk to him. A soldier will come in and tell you that Yuan Shao’s attacking and Gongsun Zan has already gone out to battle. Talk to Guan Yu to go to battle, and make sure to save.
On the world map, Guan Yu will ask you whether you want to go to the village to the north or the woods to the south. After choosing, select the party members you want to take into battle.
Battle 3a: Village
Shen Pei’s troops are messing with some villagers in the upper-left corner. To win, you’ll have to protect them, although they won’t be moving and the enemy will be coming after you. Most of the enemy will come from the north bank of the river, so move your group there to intercept them. Take them out as quick as you can before the others come at you from behind. Once you’re done, take out the stragglers near the village. Putting Zhang Fei next to Shen Pei will give you a duel. After saving the village, go inside and enter the castle. You’ll get another general.
Battle 3b: Southern Woods
Guo Tu’s forces are here to intercept you. They’re set up in a long line on the left side of the screen, with your party in the upper-right. Move forward a little and let the enemy come to you. Try to keep them away from Chen Deng, as his defense isn’t the best since he’s an archer. Once you’ve killed everyone around you, move on to the final few near Guo Tu and take them out. Put Guan Yu next to Guo Tu for another duel scene. Your reward this time is 200 yuan. After this battle, you’ll recruit two new generals.
After either battle, you’ll be able to purchase items before heading out. You’ll have another choice of where to go next.
Battle 4a: Cliff
Wen Chou’s men are here at the bottom of the cliff to the lower left. Some friendly forces are to the right of your position, about to fight the enemy. Move your forces over there to help them out. On turn three, enemy ambush troops will arrive at your starting position, but you’ll also get some friendly reinforcements to the right side of the screen. Help the guests clear out the line of enemies before they get killed, then move south. Wen Chou will begin moving his men toward you. Take them out one by one. You can have a duel with one of the enemy officers here using Zhang Fei, but not Wen Chou. You’ll have to kill him the normal way.
Battle 4b: River
To be completed
After the battle, you’ll have a chance to save before you move on to meet up with Gongsun Zan’s main army.
Battle 5: Yuan Shao’s Camp
Gongsun Zan and some of his generals are here. One of them is soon killed off in a duel, but Zhao Yun shows up and forces the enemy to retreat. You’ll want your troops to follow Gongsun Zan and Zhao Yun around the battlefield, making sure they remain healthy. Zhao Yun should be able to take care of himself, but Gongsun Zan will probably take a few hits. Once you reach the second line of troops, Yuan Shao should begin moving toward your location. Try and kill off most of the generals before he arrives, and then focus on him until you can defeat him. Note that Zhang Fei can duel the general that Zhao Yun fought at the beginning.
Yuan Shao will retreat back to his castle. Gongsun Zan will thank Liu Bei and Zhao Yun for helping him, and will head back to his province.
Meanwhile, Lu Bu has killed Dong Zhuo over Diao Chan…

Chapter 3: Cao Cao’s Vengence
Cao Cao receives word that his father was killed while passing through the Xuzhou province. In anger, he mobilizes his army to raze Xuzhou. Tao Qian asks Kong Rong for help, and Kong Rong in turn requests that Liu Bei come to Bei Hai. In the castle, talk to Mi Zhu and then Guan Yu, then leave and speak to Gongsun Zan at his castle. Zhao Yun will join you, and Gongsun Zan allows you to leave. Get any items you need and then speak to Chen Gui in your castle to leave for Bei Hai.
Out on the world map, Liu Bei will notice that Bei Hai is under seige by Yellow Turbans.
Battle 6: Bei Hai Castle
Kong Rong and Taishi Ci are holed up in the castle with the Yellow Turbans gathered around the moat. You’re over in the upper-right corner. Cross the bridge to your south and take out the two enemies there, resting at the village if need be. About half of the enemies, including the boss, will come to you, so just wait around for them and kill them as they come. Zhao Yun can duel the rebel boss, if you’d like. 500 yuan is your reward.
Inside the castle, Kong Rong will thank you and give you 500 more yuan. You can go out and visit the shops if you need to. Go back to the castle and talk to Guan Yu when you’re ready to move on. (No, you can’t take Taishi Ci with you…)
Battle 7: Xu Zhou Castle
This will be the first hard battle, as you’ll have to kill everyone instead of just a leader. You’re starting out in the lower-left corner. The Wei forces have an advance force next to the castle walls, with their main camp to the far north. Both forces will begin moving towards you, but the advance force will stop in a line past the bridge. The cavalry from up north will soon reach you, so be prepared for them. On turn five, Taishi Ci will arrive near the bridge to help you. Once you’ve killed the cavalry, Taishi Ci will begin attacking the advance line, so send some of your troops with him to help out. The rest of your forces should move north and mop up. Have Guan Yu stand next to the advance force leader to duel him. Some of the enemies might reach the castle, but Tao Qian and co. should be able to dispatch them. You might run low on time if some enemies run off, so try and contain them if you can. After finishing this slugfest, you’ll get another 500 yuan.
The Wei leaders will report to Cao Cao on their failure. Now in the Xuzhou throne room, talk to Tao Qian and you’ll discuss how to get rid of Cao Cao. Guan Yu wants to go out and fight Cao Cao while Zhang Fei wants to wait and see how things turn out. Go into the city for some new gear and items, if you want. When you’re ready, talk to Guan Yu to fight Cao Cao or talk to Zhang Fei to wait it out.
If you went with Guan Yu’s plan, you’ll move to engage Cao Cao in battle.
Battle 7b: Cao Cao’s Camp
You’re in the upper right with Tao Qian’s generals as guests, while Cao Cao’s large army is waiting at the southwest camp. Cao Cao will send out a detachment around the same size as your army, so gather around them and focus on one at a time . Don’t worry about healing too much, just do as much damage as you can. Cao Cao will send in more troops on turns four and eight, but they won’t be able to do much damage to you. Just keep killing any enemies you can. On turn ten, a soldier will report to Cao Cao that Lu Bu has taken Yanzhou, and Cao Cao will retreat, which means you win the battle.
Cao Cao will pull back to deal with Lu Bu, and Liu Bei returns to Xuzhou.
If you went with Zhang Fei’s plan, Cao Cao will still retreat to Yanzhou, but you don’t have to fight that battle.
Either way, talk to Tao Qian. He’ll ask Liu Bei to take the regional seal, but Liu Bei refuses. Now talk to Song Qian (second guy on the left). He’ll join up and take you to Xia Pi. After arriving, Zhao Yun will tell you that he’s still obligated to Gongsun Zan, and he’ll take off. You’ll see a scene detailing how Cao Cao and Lu Bu are fighting over Yanzhou. After the scene, Chen Deng will come in, so talk to him. You’ll learn that bandits are on the move in Xuzhou and you have to put them down. Talk to Guan Yu when you’re ready. You’ll have three choices on where to go (the top option is where you start). After each battle you can go on to the next ones or just go back to Xia Pi when you’re done.
Battle 8a: Northern Cliffs
A female beast-tamer will taunt you from her spot atop the cliff. The enemy here is split into three groups. Start off by going right and north from your position to clear out those enemies. The two enemies in the middle will try to move around and flank you from behind, but they shouldn’t pose any real threat. Head over and clear out the remaining enemies to the left. Make sure to have Liu Bei stop next to the boss to have her convert.
Battle 8b: Xuzhou Woods
The enemy is spread out in the woods to your northwest. Move up to the village and let the enemy come to you. After killing them, move to take out the rest. You should have no problems with this battle. Again, move Liu Bei next to the boss and he’ll join you.
Battle 8c: River
You’re starting out at the bottom, with the enemies split into two groups, at the northwest and northeast corners. Half of the northwest group will move toward you while the others try to meet up with the northeast group. You should be able to demolish the enemy near the village. Then just head over to the corner and wipe out the remaining forces. Just like the other battles, move Liu Bei to the boss for a new recruit.
Once you’re back at Xiapi a villager will give you 500 yuan. If you cleared all three areas you’ll also get some items. Talk to Chen Deng, someone will come in and tell you that Tao Qian has fallen ill. Go to Xuzhou and enter the mansion next to the castle. Tao Qian entrusts Liu Bei with Xuzhou, and passes away…
___________________________
Chapter 4: Yuan Shu and Lu Bu
You’ll be at the Xuzhou throne room. Talk to Mi Zhu. Lu Bu, Zhang Liao, and Chen Gong will enter. Talk to Lu Bu twice and Liu Bei will agree to give him shelter in Xia Pi, although Zhang Fei doesn’t like it. Guan Yu and Zhang Liao have a little chat before they leave. Now talk to Mi Fang, and when Song Qian comes in, talk to him. A messenger will arrive and tell you that Cao Cao recognizes your governership, but he’s sent you a commission to defeat Yuan Shu since Yuan Shu has proclaimed himself Emperor. Talk it over with Mi Zhu and you’ll decide to attack Wan castle. Talk to Guan Yu when you’re ready for battle.
Yuan Shu will talk with Ji Ling and Zhang Xun, while Lu Bu talks with his officers about the war.
Battle 9: Wan Castle
Another very hard battle since you have to kill everyone, and this time you have to move fast. Ji Ling’s army is camped on the southern bank, with a smaller squad led by Lei Bo near the bridge. Wait around near the beginning. On turn six, Lu Bu’s enemy army will appear up north and Liu Bei’s army will start freaking out. Start taking them out quickly. Ji Ling’s main army will now start moving toward you, but they’ll stop near Lei Bo’s group if you’re still on the north bank. Guan Yu can take out Zhang Liao in a duel, so do that to save time. Hopefully you can destroy Lu Bu’s army in a short time (five turns or so). Once they’re gone, send your army over to the bridge. You can’t just rush them, since they’ll block your path. You’ll need to send down a unit and lure some enemies up to your side so you can pick them off. After killing a few people this way, send down your stronger units to help clear a path. Ji Ling’s army will rush you once you do this, clogging up the space, but you’ll have to deal with it. Remember, you only have 30 turns to win, so move fast (I finished this battle on turn 29 myself). Good luck, you’ll need it.
Zhang Fei will tell you that Lu Bu took Xuzhou while you were busy fighting Yuan Shu, so you’ll have to seek shelter with Cao Cao in Xuchang. At the throne room, talk to Cao Cao and he’ll give you a house to stay in while he thinks things over. Head outside (check out the spiffy city map here) and check out the shops at the bottom. Once you’re done, enter the mansion on the right. Cao Cao decides to help Liu Bei and, after a little private conversation (I think it’s the "heroes" scene) the Wei army marches on Xia Pi. Lu Bu quickly retreats to Xuzhou, where he decides to split his forces to defend the castle. You’ll be in the Xia Pi throne room now. Speak to Cao Cao to learn that you’ll be splitting up in order to face Lu Bu’s forces, with Xun Yu taking the northern path and Guo Jia taking the southern one. Speak to the officer you’d like to go with and you’ll march off to battle.
Battle 10a: Xuzhou Woods
After that last battle, this one is nothing. Zhang Liao only has as many troops as you do, and he even starts out surrounded. Simply move in and clean house. Some enemy soldiers will pop up at your starting point on turn five, but you’re probably almost done already by then. To make this battle even easier, simply park Guan Yu next to Zhang Liao and he’ll run off. In addition to yuan, some of your officers will receive free level-ups, which is nice.
Battle 10b: River
To be completed
The Wei army marches on to Xuzhou, but finds that the castle has been abandoned. Talk to Cao Cao and he’ll wonder what’s going on. A soldier will come in and report that Lu Bu’s army has fled to Xiao Pei. Talk to Cao Cao again and he’ll order you to put down Lu Bu once and for all. Talk to Guan Yu when you’re ready.
Battle 11: Xiao Pei Castle
Well now, that’s a castle! Lu Bu’s got the bulk of his army stationed inside the castle walls with the drawbridge up, and Gao Shun, Zang Ba, and Hou Cheng are manning the outposts. Move up from the corner toward Hou Cheng’s fort (the one with the most enemies). They’ll engage you once you’re in range, so kill them once you get close. Move Liu Bei over to Hou Cheng to make him retreat. The extra enemies from the other two forts will come at you, so kill them off. Have Liu Bei move to the other forts and defeat those generals in duels. Once done, put a soldier in each fort and move Liu Bei in front of the bridge (not sure if that’s exactly what you have to do, but it worked for me). Gao Shun will lower the bridge for you, and Cao Cao et al. will decide to show up and help you out, which doubles your numbers. Move your forces into the castle and wait around the fort there. The enemies on the sides will move in to flank you, just get rid of them. The buildings in here function as walls, so you’ll have to go around the sides to reach Lu Bu. Whoever’s in front will be taking decent damage, so go ahead and let your Wei buddies take point. As always, move Guan Yu next to Zhang Liao and they’ll have it out in a duel. Anyway, once you’re at the top, be careful moving your forces on the left since they’ll have to pass under the archers, opening themselves up to attack. Get up in there, take out Lu Bu’s support, and finish him off for the last time.
Guan Yu will tell you to enter the city. Go to the castle, where Cao Cao is deciding what to do to Lu Bu and his officers. Talk to Lu Bu, Cao Cao, then Lu Bu again. You’ll be given a choice, but it doesn’t seem to mean much since Lu Bu dies either way. Next Zhang Liao comes in. He asks Cao Cao for execution, but Guan Yu stops Cao Cao and vouches for Zhang Liao, so he signs on with Wei. Following this, Liu Bei and the Wei army return to Xuchang. To celebrate his victory, Cao Cao hosts an Imperial hunt, but he breaks propriety by using the Emperor’s bow for himself.

ParticipantThanks, Perhong. Doesn’t ROTK XI already have a translated demo?
Also, let me state for the record that "kill all enemies" battles are TEH EVIL. Wan Castle (30 turns to kill ~30 enemies with only 7 people), I’m looking at you.

ParticipantIt seems that, unlike DOAE3, GameFAQs not only has game info on this game, but even a walkthrough (albeit for the GBA version), so go use that one for now.
After glancing through it, it’s nice to know I got most of the story and names right even though I don’t know any Chinese.

ParticipantCool man.
I’ve been stuck against Ji Ling at Wan for the longest.
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby
