ParticipantJust saw yet again that the lord started a FAQ on FF7. I don’t really need to describe anything, because probably everyone knows about the game.
And now… discuss!

ModeratorThere seem to be two groups of people on the internet:
- 1. Those who love FF7 and don’t stop talking about it
- 2. Those who hate FF7 because people won’t stop talking about it
I find myself closer to the first but still in neither group. Because, for a while, I didn’t like FF7 because it was 3-d. It seemed like the jump was unnecessary and only resulted in the loss of everyone’s hand when they could’ve done really nice 2-d graphics instead.
But the game has grown on me. I don’t know what it is, but I still find the materia system fun, even though it has an equalizing effect. I find the characters and plot amusing even though it has a bad translation. And I find the music great. Not much challenge, but enough optional stuff and in the right amount. I fully acknowledge the game has many faults, but I still like playing it.
I don’t understand those who naysay the game by saying "everyone loves it, but it’s really not great, so it sucks !!!". Those who give some justification? Sure. I understand if you don’t like it for a justifiable reason, but that reason shouldn’t be "everyone led me to believe it would bring Jesus back from heaven and then it would rain skittles and I would eat my fill before the rapture".
I used to dislike the game, but on my second playthrough I fell in love with it. It’s probably in my top 10 list for PSX games, it’s not at the top… but it is a lot more enjoyable on the second playthrough. I’m glad I got a copy during that brief interlude where it was actually $15.
I’m scared to try a second playthrough of 8, though. I might end up *shudder* almost enjoying it.

KeymasterGood posts guys, you’re a step ahead of me.
I agree with you exactly Niahak…after the great 16 bit RPGs on both systems (and even 2d Suikoden 1 just a bit earlier) the graphics in 7 look so pixel-y. Playing it again this is even more apparent. This is why I say these graphics on PS1 are more distracting than the SNES games. Cloud and friends don’t even look real, more like lego blocks.
But yeah, the game itself. I like the dialog and translation. The story holds it weight, Cloud makes "changes" throughout (since everyone is obsessed with character progression), although I think it’s a little too centered on him. Disc 1 is very story heavy and then it seems to slow down a bit in Disc 2 as the world opens up.
One big thing I dislike…a lot of the minigames seem really poorly done. The Shinra march is basically impossible for me to time correctly…the golden saucer’s games are just boring and brainless…the chocobo racing is incredibly redundant and a poor FF minigame in my opinion (especially compared to cards in FFVIII). Oh and there’s Fort Condor which basically consists of buying lots of units. I’m sure there is more, but those are the ones that are lacking that come to mind.
FF7’s biggest problem is the ridiculous expectations placed upon it. When I compare FF’s, FF7 is probably behind all the SNES FF’s but ahead of the other PS1 FF’s (except maybe Tactics). The materia is nice but it turns everyone into mutts (something I hate in FF games) which is one of my pet peeves in FF games. I liked that Strago could cast Blue Magic, Rydia could summon, etc rather than Cloud being able to do everything he wants.
I haven’t played it in 2 or 3 years. Yea, 2 and a half years ago (in December of my Junior year, I remember it). I just want to get out of Midgar. I’ll have more thoughts as I progress I’m sure.

KeymasterWell I forgot about one minigame – Cloud performing CPR on Priscilla. Sorry, I just don’t see the need for having this in here.
This FF7 Disc 1 Walkthrough is going to be the biggest walkthrough file we have here at lordyuanshu.com, im pretty sure of it. I’m about halfway through and already it’s gigantic. Could be disastrous for the dialup users.

ParticipantWell, it’s quite a long game depending on how you boost and how frequently. I remember one time I boosted so much, that Cloud had all his limit breaks (except Omnislash) just before Junon  !

KeymasterThat’s a lot of boosting. I like to keep it to a minimum so I can have some difficulty throughout the game. But yea I boosted a little when I got to Wutai because the enemies there give good EXP for the time you get there.
I hate the Great Glacier. I ran around there looking for Alexander for way too long, for some reason I can’t seem to remember that the only way to get there is through the snowy part with the poles.

Participant2. Those who hate FF7 because people won’t stop talking about it
Sorry to step into your party but Im one of those people who hate the game and like it but dont really talk about it like it’s the Shit. FF9, FFX and FF6 are probably better…
Anyways there are those who never play the game and watch the movie and goes omg Cloud rockox! Tifa is hot! Cloud can fly! yet they make no attempt to play the game.

ParticipantEvery now and again a game impacts the industry with truly seismic effect: a game which doesn’t so much draw but blast a line in the sand. These games are true benchmarks, the means by which we measure the history of this little cottage industry we’ve all taken to our hearts. Usually, it’s merely enough to ask that the games themselves be good; while they inspired a an of insipid, hateful clones it’s hard to hold anything against Mario, Sonic, Doom or Tetris. Games like this are wonderful, and it is desirable that we have them. Sometimes a game will come along and set good things in motion: Resident Evil 4 was acknowledged as an influence on Gears of War, and in turn it seems like everyone in the dev community and their mother can’t stop talking about how great Gears of War is. Well done, Resident Evil 4. You are a great game.
Sometimes we get little flakes of mana that inspire dreck and sometimes we’re even blessed with trends of positive evolution. Sometimes. Then again sometimes a game will scream into the earth like a great meteor of fossilised shit, wiping out everything in its’ path and ejecting putrid effluence high into jet stream. An extinction level event of gamedom, a thing of pure corrupt hate, an instrument of cultural demolition and pole-flipping destruction. Welcome to Final Fantasy VII.
Japanese RPGs, a magazine feature once informed me, are like the Madden licence of the rising sun: year in, year out the same people – who may or may not be inclined to dwell in subterranean storage areas of their parental home – will line up to buy the same kinds of game – bishies with massive swords and inevitable memory loss crusading against random encounters, evil empires, and probably some kind of evil god. These games can take upwards of 40 hours to complete.
Why do they play them? Is it for the immature, sickly narratives? Is it for the dismembered “strategy”
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby

ParticipantWow, how much time it took you to write that? I haven’t read everything, but it seems interesting. Tell me that isn’t C&P.

ParticipantYup
But it accurately conveys my thoughts and ideas on FF7, well, I still find FF7 a guilty pleasure.

ParticipantSo it was C&P… Well, if it illustrates your opinion, it’s a good thing… maybe?
