Lord Yuan Shu
KeymasterBeen playing through this game at a rapid pace after finding it at my brother’s. The translation took away some of the classic lines but as usual the game and character interaction in particular makes a lot more sense.
One thing that sucks is that you cannot just kill Intangir with Doom. You have to actually defeat them. I don’t know if I can be bothered to do this since they counter almost any magic attack with Meteor. It would be nice to see them on the Veldt later on but there are plenty of other solid places to build up also (like Maranda desert in World II).
Plus the Floating Continent is coming up, I always grind for hours in this place with my favs Gau, Edgar and Strago. Just bought about 50 Lightning Scrolls to get ready.

KeymasterMore good news. It only took me about 6 total auctions at Jidoor to find "Zona" Seeker and Golem magicites. On the SNES version it could take me HOURS to find those fuckin things sometimes.

ModeratorI remember reading they kept some of the classic lines and that most of the changes were good. I still need to get this :/ but I may just wait until the FF6 remake when they do it on the DS.
Did they change the other notorious bugs? Like magic evade % counting for all evade % (and physical evade doing nothing)?
I’m impressed you use Gau and Strago. Edgar’s a solid choice, but I always used Sabin and Celes as my others at that point. Gau and Strago are both annoying to get abilities for.

KeymasterI think the evade is still screwed up. Or at least I don’t notice much different with that.
Yea I’d imagine this would be coming out on the DS a little later hopefully with V too.
I just like bringing Strago to collect Blue Magic at the Floating Continent. Plus I always give him the Heal Rod and use him as a Cure-all healer in the back row. As for Gau, he’s my favorite for sure. I don’t go to the Veldt to collect much in the first half but with Running Shoes / Hermes Sandals equipped and Stray Cat (Catscratch) used he can slaughter anything. Except of course you can’t control who he attacks (or with what ability).
Sabin and Celes are useful to bring along since they’re the first two characters you get in the dark world…but I get sick of them after not too long in the dark world, notably Celes because her secondary ability is kind of bland imo.

KeymasterYea my Celes and Sabin were pretty crappy starting off in the Dark World. I think I would’ve died against those tentacles at Figaro Castle, but I equipped Hermes Sandals / Running Shoes on everyone and they’d just waste turn after turn trying to make you slow and grab you.
Almost finishing up "Darill’s" tomb. Love this place too. Growth Egg, Angler Whelk (the shelled creature, I forget his name in the original FF6 I think it was The Presenter), and Dullahan. What fun. Also I realized they changed Pearl to Holy…that’s lame, I liked Pearl :)

KeymasterBum Rush is Phantom Rush? Sorry but Bum Rush is classic that should have stayed.
Also, Sabin’s D pad blitzes are hard as fuck to be consistent with the DS dpad, at least the ones harder than Aurabolt. Fire Dance was the worst though I seriously did it like 33% of the time for a while but it’s probably more like 66-77% now.
But of course, these are all minor complaints. :) The toughest part is memorizing the monsters names so I have some clue of who I’m using with Gau with his Rages

ParticipantI think this was a great remake.
Intangir is still fun. You just have to come up with a real strategy now. They patched up quite a few quick-kills for some bosses. I guess it is nice in a way because it restores some challenge to the game which these bosses should have had.
Magic evade has been fixed!
Keep that in mind when using your gear.
Sabin’s rushes can be inputted with sequences now, rather than requiring Street Fighter like motions. It was hard for me too, at first, until I started to figure them out. Then it becomes pretty easy.
Did you notice how they changed Celes’ prison scene?
July 14, 2008 at 3:33 pm #35658Lord Yuan Shu
KeymasterYea a lot of the text additions like with the Celes prison scene are nice. Also the game explains things so much better, like in Darill’s Tomb where they actually give you a hint as to where the EXP Egg is.
Intangir is still damn hard though and the only success I had was using Stop on him so he didn’t flee. I just fought him once so he was on the Veldt but I’ve already done some Cactuar / Hoover grinding and that’s much better.
So with Sabin’s blitzes you mean I can just press left, down, right for Fire Dance instead of doing it street fighter style? Shit how was I supposed to know that lol…

ParticipantI actually came up with a pretty good system for killing the Intangir, but yeah, I wouldn’t do it exclusively to develop my Espers. I just like to make sure I get every single monster in the game available for Gau. That was a big deal when I was playing through the game so many years ago and we spent months figuring it all out (thank heavens for the internet today). Last time through I screwed up and missed one of the monsters in the mining cart ride (you can randomly miss in an encounter there).
As for Celes’ scene, you didn’t notice that it was censored? In the original the soldier smacked her around and she fell to the ground. That doesn’t happen in the remake, if I recall correctly.
Yep! Simply tap buttons for Sabin. :D

KeymasterHaha wow. I’m usually a completionist and I love my Gau as I’ve stated before…but I’ve never done that. The best I’ve got is about 75% of those with him but I got tired of beating the enemies on the Veldt but Gau mysteriously not getting them…plus I still just use Stray Cat with him anyway…But I commend you for getting all of them, that’s quite the accomplishment.
For me I just usually get every spell for everyone fighting around the Maranda Desert and those dinosaurs east of Narshe. And all of Mog’s dances.
I didn’t notice they didn’t beat her up, I thought you were just talking about the text change.
As for the Blitz moves, taping left, up, right, down, left does not work for Bum Rush. I still have to do the street fighter thing to get it to work :)

ParticipantOh, check online. There are sequences for each blitz, but not all of them are obvious.
I’ve only ever actually given Gau all of his rages once. And that was a huge pain. Mostly I just like to complete the bestiary now and know that I could give all of them to Gau if I wanted to. Now I only give him the monsters I plan to use, otherwise the list gets pretty hard to navigate…

KeymasterGigantuar. Did you fight one of these damn things in FFVI advance? They’re in that Maranda Forest and they just fucking spam 1000 Needles on my characters. I got Bum Rush off twice for 5000 each time but evidently he has well over 10000 HP.
They’re ruining my level up spots!!!! I’ll have to save after each fight here…

It took me a while to figure out what you were talking about, but you’re talking about the huge Cactaur, right? He’s actually a new game addition (well, you knew that) and once you beat him he is 1) gone for good, and 2) I believe you get him as an Esper. There are a handful of new Espers in the game which you can get, and some of them do things which no other Esper did before. Gigantaur (sp?), I believe, was also nice in the sense that he is a speed +2 level up Esper.
He’s quite beatable, though. Just a little scary when he gets started.
(I think he also has an attack that wipes your whole party out if you wait too long — 10,000 needles.)

ParticipantPlaying this over on GBA was hot. Did you get to the coliseum yet?…Wait til you see who you can get there. :-D
I personally think it was relatively easy on the advance version. Easier than the original at least. I felt I didn’t really have to level as much. Certain enemies can fuck you up still i.e. those giant mantis that do crazy amounts of damage to you. Brought back a lot of old feelings and memories playing through it again though. I agree on the blitz technique names. They should’ve stuck with the originals. Bum Rush sounds a lot cooler. Phantom Rush just sounds too obvious. I also think Fire Dance is cooler than Rising Phoenix. Sabin was prolly my top fav(can’t you tell :) )

KeymasterThis game was easy in the Light World just as it always was, but the Dark World provided more resistance than it normally did. I like that they did away with the Vanish / Doom – X-Zone bug. That helps to not have that itch to scratch in sticky situations, though I really didn’t use it in the SNES version save to grind against Intangir. Overall though the Dark World has been harder because grinding in the Maranda desert is impossible at first once the Gigantuar starts appearing, but eventually I built my chars up.
The game has really came alive with the new translation. Never thought I’d gush about a new translation so much since I generally hate them. Definitely keeps me more involved in the story part of the game, which I used to just skim through since I’ve beat the game numerous times back in the day.
Finally beat that Gigantuar fucker. He busted out 10000 Needles on me, but that was when I wasn’t strong enough to defeat him anyway. Re-Raise is what helped, though I really just needed everyone with 3000+ HP to survive the ten 1000 needles he spams at the end. The key was saving the last Bum Rush until I had everyone’s HP maxed so I was safe to survive.
It is so much nicer not having this prick ruin my day in the Maranda desert! Time to kill some Cactuars…I might have this beat by tomorrow.
Still need to find these new espers. I’m digging the additions, it’s fun to learn Hastega faster than x2 with Palidor. :)
I have not gone to the coliseum save to get Shadow.
