I can’t say much for the story but I didn’t enjoy the story of FFXII much either.
FFX’s story is nothing like XII’s though…
FFX’s story seemed to have some heart put into it whereas XII was just :|
I liked FFX because it was so story driven. XII just comes off as a bad MMO, and I hate MMOs.

That’s the main thing for me too. There’s just something about FFX’s story and story-driven-ness that even though Tidus is a titty baby you still just feel like you’re playing a great gayme.

KeymasterYea I wasn’t too interested in it but no one can deny the story is more prevalent in X compared to XII. It was also fed to the gamer more consistently than in XII. That said X is extremely linear and that kind of annoyed me.

I generally like non-linearity as well but hey I finished FFX and Grandia 2 twice each and they’re the most linear games ever, so!

KeymasterGrandia II is awesome…before we go off on a tangent, did you play the Dreamcast or PS2 version? I’ve played through the Dreamcast one multiple times and that’s probably my favorite game on the entire system

Iuno, Ikaruga’s pretty ballin’, imo.

ParticipantDreamcast, and personally, I liked it better than that Skies of Arcadia people always call BEST GAYME EVER HIDDEN GEM A++. Although I finished that too. Also yes probably my favorite Dreamcast game.
Ikaruga is hella ballin’.

ParticipantI have played Grandia II as well, PS2 version though which apparently had load problems? Anyway, I finished most of it. Also played Skies of Arcadia but that game has way too many random battles even on the world map.
I will agree that FFX is better than FFXII.

ParticipantYou know, I disliked the story of FFX, and, besides having a fairly decent combat system (some of the best turn-based shit you can find outside of Destiny of an Emperor and Shin Megami Tensei) that story is just shoved down your throat whether you like it or not, if they at least made everything skippable, the game would have some replay value to me.
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby

ModeratorI hate to resurrect the oldest Square Enix thread, but I finally started this game again.
Last time I left off right after the laughing scene because I couldn’t stand any more Tidus-Yuna dialogue. They’re both awful. But many friends have told me I need to play it, and I really do want to be a True RPG Fanâ„¢.
Everything outside of Tidus and Yuna is pretty good – I like Spira, and the locations are stunning. But every once in a while they do a close up of Tidus’ face and he starts talking and I hate FFX again. Then Yuna pauses awkwardly in the middle of a sentence, and I start hoping Auron will come up and punch them both in the face.
I do hear the endgame gets better, and the game looks like it’ll be really breakable.
I’ve reached the 13 hour point and it’s looking better, but I’m not sure whether it’ll make it into my top 5 PS2. I’ve been too hooked on the Suikodens and Personas, which have great characters. FFX has better characters than FFXII (though Balthier was good), but that’s not saying much.

KeymasterYou must be getting far at this point. Have you faced Seymour at all?
The battling can feel really mechanical especially early on, where each monster is weak to something one of your characters does, basically forcing you to switch characters in and out based on that.
It’s a good game to multitask doing stuff on the computer, for when the Tidus / Yuna scenes happen. Fortunately that stuff starts to get shut out later on but it’s really heavy early on and it wears on you…
Like I’ve said before it’s all about the end game stuff, getting all the Sigil’s, crests, ultimate weapons, the Calm Lands Arena, etc. That’s where the fun is had. My only qualm about the arena is that so much of it is just using your Aeons as sacrificial lambs, but it is fun trying to figure out how to defeat some of the crazier ones. Nothing else is really hard in this game in terms of boss battles save for the Seymour Mt Gagazet battle and even that has been easy the last two times through for me.
Blitzball gets old real fast for me, having to do all that work for Wakka’s weapon and Sigil. Chocobo Riding and the butterfly catching were always addictive for me. Not sure what to think about the dodge lightning thing, other than it gets pretty stressful when you’re counting at like 150 and you’re unsure if you lost count. I never use Lulu anyway later on. Auron’s is tedious as hell having to catch 1 of every monster but I think the ending arena bosses force you to catch 10 of everything! That takes a ton of time waiting for the rare monsters to show up…

ModeratorIIRC, I had less than half the final weapons unlocked. After all, Bahamut is 255 strength and 255 defense, so why bother?
…aside from the fact that the memcard with that was lost forever…

KeymasterYea, doing it is not really necessary. It was just nice to have some open-ended aspects to it, at the end of what was a straight forward game the entire way through.

ModeratorTrue, but I don’t have the interest in blitzball or the patience to master that chocobo race or…
It’s like DWM, where people would rant and rave about their DarkDrium…. nevermind that you can get a 6-way max Divinegon in half that time!
