haha you’re using Knots of Rust how resourceful.
January 4, 2007 at 2:56 am #22724Taishi CiParticipantThis is my personal log for a low level game challenge on Final Fantasy XII. I’m trying to play without using Quickenings or Espers, but I will try and fight Marks when I can.
If I do this right, my levels should be 1/2/2/3/3/3 for Vaan/Balthier/Fran/Basch/Ashe/Penelo.
Opening
Just do the part with Reks like normal.
When you get Vaan, go ahead and kill the rats since there’s no way around it. After you can access the Estersand, ignore the enemies and just kill the Rogue Tomato; you can’t get back inside the city until you kill it. Once you can come and go, start stealing from Cactoids and Wolves so you can get loot for Potions and Phoenix Downs. You’ll be needing quite a few of these for the long trip through the sewers and Barheim later on. At some point during this period, go get Penelo from Giza so you’ll have another target from the enemies (make sure you turn off her Gambits so she won’t kill anything). Try and get a Broadsword from one of the Cactoids in the Estersand if you can. Once you have enough items (I got 50 Potions and 10 Phoenix Downs), save your game and head for the waterway (don’t take the chest across from Dalan’s house). From this point you’ll want to save on a seperate file in case you mess up.
Garamsythe Waterway
This first part is simple, just turn on flee and run through the sewers without fighting anything. Grab all the treasure you find down here, of course. When you get to the palace, ignore the treasure downstairs if it’s there. Do the usual palace stuff and you’ll end up back in the sewers with Fran and Balthier, both of whom should be at level 2. Proceed until you find Amalia fighting the soldiers. Now this is important: you only get LP from these guys (2 each), but not if Amalia kills them, so steal all her kills. At this point Vaan should have enough LP to buy the first Swords license, so get that if you managed to find a Broadsword or a Longsword. Save here and go on to the next room, and kill the Flans there, shouldn’t be too hard. Continue on to the control room and save your game again before fighting Firemane.
Boss: Firemane
Vaan and Amalia are going to be the ones fighting this guy at close range, so he will focus on one of them; get Vaan closer first so he’ll be the target. Amalia will be kind enough to heal you with free Potions and even Phoenix Downs if Vaan dies, which is nice. Balthier and Fran will be sniping from the rear so they should be safe. You’ll want to make sure to use Potions on Amalia when her HP drops since she won’t heal herself unless her HP goes to ~30 or less. After taking off around 1/4 of his lifebar, Firemane will use Bushfire on you, so make sure you’re fully healed before he does it. Quickly heal Vaan and Amalia (and the others if they got hit) and keep attacking. Try not to use any Phoenix Downs if you can, you’ll want to save them for later. When he gets down to 1/4 of his life left, Firemane will use Bushfire again. After he does this, just go all out on him and he should go down without too much trouble (don’t worry if Amalia dies at this point, you’re done with her anyway).
Nalbina Dungeons
Yay, all your stuff is gone. Go around the Stockhold and get the Knots of Rust from the chests, there should be four in all. Then save your game and go fight the Seeq’s.
Boss: Daguza, Gwitch, Galeedo
This fight is actually pretty tricky now. Use two Knots of Rust on Gwitch; if you’re lucky, he’ll either die or be so close that he only needs a couple more punches. Use your other two on Galeedo and pummel him until he falls too. If Balthier and Vaan are not both healthy right now, just reset. Once you get lucky and manage to kill both of them while remaining strong, tag-team Daguza. Try to keep moving so he’ll have to follow you around. One of your party members will probably die, but as long as you can finish Daguza off with the other one you’ll be fine.
Get your stuff back and save at the crystal here. In the next room, grab the couple of chests that are within reach and then make a mad dash to the door across the room. Yes, all the guards will be following you, but when you reach the area where the cutscene takes place, they’ll all magically return to their former positions. Open the chests you can reach from here and then ride the Baschmobile down to Barheim Passage.
More to come.

Yeah, Basch is level 4 right now, but don’t worry about that. Get the fuse from the merchant and turn on the lights, then buy around 50 Potions and use the rest of your cash on Phoenix Downs. Save again and open the door. Run through the room and out the door. Heal if you need to and then run down the hallway, going left and then right at the forks, until you reach the next hallway. Head up the stairs on your right and through the room here to reach the side chamber. Heal your pary, and then take Vaan out of the group. There will be a Battery Mimic just to your left from the entrance; use Balthier, Fran, and Basch to kill it, but don’t kill any other enemies that try to interfere. After you kill it, the power should shoot up to around 50. Flee across the room to the switch and hit it before the power drops below 30. Once the gate is open, run back out of this room, through the area after that and back into the tunnel, then take a right to reach the save point.
Alright, now that you’ve healed up and saved, walk all the way back to The Lightworks, stealing from enemies as you go. When you get there, sell all your loot to the merchant and restock on your items (50 Potions and 20 Phoenix Downs should work). Buy some armor for Balthier and Fran too, if you want to keep stealing stuff. Once you’re ready, leave and walk all the way to the end of the Zeviah Span, and save your game before fighting the boss.
Boss: Mimic Queen
Pick either Vaan or Fran to be the healer, and give them the Goddess Magicite so they won’t be hurt by Shockstorm. Have Balthier and Basch keep attacking the Mimic Queen while Fran uses Fire and then provides secondary healing. Keep your people spread out and away from Mimic Queen so you don’t get hurt too badly by Shockstorm. You’ll probably lose a few people to this attack, so be prepared for that. Just keep your health up long enough, and you should reach a point where you can go all out on her and take her down. Note that you cannot kill the tiny mimics as they give XP, so just ignore them as best you can.
