This is from Path of Radiance, the Gamecube Fire Emblem. The dialogue in this game is great.
Dialogue aside… this game pulled me away from Shining Force. I found SF somewhere between "unforgiving" and "unfair" on the Scale of Difficulty – not that the game itself is hard, it’s that it’s random in a lot of ways that I found unappealing.
Path of Radiance (the first FE I have played) is random in a lot of ways, none of them feeling particularly unfair. Level-ups are still random and there are critical hits… but most of the time if a character dies it’s because you made a mistake somewhere (there are exceptions…). Granted, I’m playing on Easy mode. I’m not sure if it makes a difference (the game was only willing to say this way I’d get tutorials).
So far I’m liking it. The basic mechanics are simple and (mostly) well explained, while the more complex ones are just explained pretty well. The plot is well done, although in standard anime/JRPG style, a million things have been hinted at and none explained. For having so many characters (and I’ve just started) they’re fairly well fleshed out, something along Suikoden.
I’ll probably update this once I’ve played more :) Anyone else played/enjoy this series?

ParticipantI liked both of the gba Fire Emblem games alot.Does Path of Radiance have the same type of gameplay?

ModeratorYep, same overall idea. Probably different features – I haven’t played the GBA Fire Emblems (yet – a situation I shall remedy shortly). In the GC one you can "rescue" anyone of lower weight (which essentially has both occupying one square, with the rescuer taking all attacks but having a major penalty to attacking). It’s a really neat feature but I don’t know if it’d be in the GBA one.
I heard the GBA one does have really good 2d graphics, though.

ParticipantThe main game-play graphics a pretty horrible but the cut-scenes and fight scenes have good graphics.

ParticipantBeen playing Fire Emblem since the 90s. I’ve played and owned every single game in the series. Actually, these days, I haven’t had much time playing my consoles, so both FE9 and 10 sits unopened and in mint condition.

Participantsince the 90’s…How old are you now TF?
Also, I never played any fire emblem games.

KeymasterI haven’t played any…but it sounds interesting enough. If a used copy of the GC version was a little cheaper, I’d probably give it a shot.

I’m 25. What’s so shocking about that? The series came out in 1989 back on the NES. Shining Force totally ripped off the second Fire Emblem when it came out.

ParticipantNothing shocking about it man. I was just curious.

ModeratorStill liking the game. The more I play it, the more the plot seems like a decent Fantasy novel. Oh sure, it’d be cliched, but there aren’t that many games that would be good novels ;)
Good characterization for so many characters. My only disappointment is that you only get to know the characters you use, and only if you use them alongside certain others…
For example, I’ve used Zihark since I got him (since he’s a beast!), but since I haven’t used any laguz or Brom, I don’t get any backstory. Same case with Mia.

ParticipantWell, the characters are there to provide you with extra reasons to replay the game. Some people play through the game a dozen times just to unlock all the information about every single character.
Oh, Niahak, the Wii game is a direct sequel to POR. You’ll get to reunite with the cast of POR, but the support convos are gone. The new characters are developed in a more old fashion Fire Emblem style. You have to discover the conversations like in FE4/5. The supports are extremely watered down, but 80% of the characters are from POR. The plot gets even better with RD.

ModeratorYeah, that was among the reasons I started PoR – the Wii game was a direct sequel.
This is the first FE I’ve played… how did the character development work in the older ones?
