ParticipantWell I always liked these games cause at the time they came out I was a MMORPG addict and they helped transition me away from the evil demons of Dark Age of Camelot and World of Warcrap.
Anyway I only ended up getting Part 1 and 2 of the first series. Just wondering if anyone has these are also played them. I liked how they clocked in at around the 15-20 hour mark each. Easy to make it through them in one weekend.
i think I’ll have to dig around and see if I can at least grab part 3 and 4 of the original story.

ModeratorI played through the whole first series a few years back. The first two are fairly fun, but there are no real combat changes between the games, so if you have all of them it becomes a 60+-hour RPG with somewhat repetitive combat. That said, the last two also have the most plot, so they’re still worth getting if you liked it thus far.
I do like the story, the characters especially, but the optional dungeon at the end of the last game is absolutely ridiculous. Heck, even the final dungeon was pretty bad as I recall.

KeymasterLike they’re too hard or just not done well?

ModeratorThe combat system is like a simpler FFXII, minus the gambits. Sort of a compromise between action and turn-based combat. If you expect it to react quickly to your commands, you’re going to get frustrated easily.
It’s just not complex enough to hold up well over a 60-hour game.
That said, the music is great which is usually enough for me to forgive a game just about anything.
LYS, you can usually get the first for about $15-20 and it’s fairly representative of the rest of the series.

And what pre FFVII rpg did have? To me the battle system is just fine. I didn’t care that it was kinda repetitive, to me thats actually what I liked.
Oh in other news anyone here watch G4tv? Ever notice how on Xplay they bash the "same Old style games" ie. Lost Odyssey, Devil May Cry 4, and Dynasty Warriors 6 yet in the same breath gush orgasmic delight over such notable rehash’s as CoD4, any Madden game, or the like. I also like how they went on and on about how great Viking looked…….to me looked alot like a Dynasty Warriors game which you just bashed for 5 minutes at the top of the show. /pseudo rant off………
Anyway not taking a shot at ya Nia just stating a lot of people have this complaint about .hack but can play Final Fantasy games which I’m sorry the only times they change their battle system they get critized for it. See FFIX(i love it others hate it), FFVIII(i hate it), FFXII(I can stand it but um….what is there to do once you get Gambits), etc. etc.

ModeratorYeah, I admit good battle systems aren’t too common. I guess having played a few MMOs it compares somewhat favorably to the more bland ones :P I do admit having the party members around makes it a bit nicer. Depending on who you had around, you had to change your play-style a lot.
Pre-FFVII rpgs didn’t often have battle systems that good, but then (aside from Dragon Warrior/Quest) didn’t usually take 60 hours either ;)
