If you try to raise your level as high as the maximum (99) by means of regular battles, it will take forever. But here is a way for us to achieve it faster. I successfully did it multiple times in the Japanese and Chinese version. I guess the English version should work. I will try when I get there.
When you reach Mian Zhu gate in Shu, you have to enter at the rear (after you pass through a cave). Instead of burning the gate, talk to the soldiers (opposite to Lord Yuan Shu’s guide). You will engage in a battle with them. You should defeat them easily. When you talk to them again, another battle occur. You should get the idea by now. You keep talking, you keep fighting, you keep earning EXP, and you raise your levels fast. These soldiers give you 3000 EXP in one battle. You can kill them with an all-out attack, when you start the five tiger generals of Shu (Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Huang Zhong, Ma Chao).
Once you reach level 99, procede according to the story. You should have no problems with any enemies, including Sima Yi. Your attacks are so potent that the enemies cannot match. Along with the Ba Gua formation and Ce Mian (albeit low success rate), you can breeze through the game.
There was one time when I became impatient with this move. I then finished the Shu stage, killing Zhang Ren and Liu Zhang. I went back to the Mian Zhu gate and spoke to the soldiers again. Their HP increase to 3500, 4000, or 4500. When I defeat them, I receive more EXP per battle. You can speed things up this way.
The key point is: DO NOT burn Mian Zhu. TALK to the soldiers.

Even though you can conquer Chengdu, you cannot enter the Luo castle (the castle right north of the gate). You have to burn the gate and fight the actual battle. Then, you fight another battle at the Luo castle and enter Luo. In Luo, there are many hidden goodies. . .
