Okay, so not really, but this one is good for being a list.
This is apparently written by the administrator of Hardcore Gaming 101 who I respect a lot for keeping things plain, matter-of-fact, and largely ad-free. Plus talking about awesome games.
Anyway… the list is probably the best one I’ve read in a while, probably because it focuses on one genre (not even going into ARPGs and SRPGs).
The total list contains:

My (brief, for now ;) ) comments:
Overly heavy focus on FF. I’d hardly call 12 "essential", but taste varies I guess. I’m glad to see: Skies (his write-up there is excellent), Suikoden 2, Persona 3 and Earthbound in particular.
good games, but i think fallout, doae 1, and dragon quest 8 are important leave-outs…
on a side note, it’s impressive that after all the hype and trying to better themselves after each game, that final fantasy is still awesome, game-after-game…
I always figured Suikoden 1 would be there before Suikoden 2, but I guess he didn’t hate the battle system for 2 as much as I did.
Yea decent list. Certainly FF heavy but that’s to be expected. I am surprised he chose DQV over DQIV but that’s just my opinion. And if he’s gonna put all the FF games in there one by one, he should have at least put one other Suikoden game in there.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingI have all those games too, at least the ones in english, but i have roms of the ones that aren’t, namely dq5 which is no way share or form better than dq4. Also I can’tagree with the final fantasy part, FF4-8 & 10 are good but they all don’t belong on the list, 8 especially, slong with shadow hearts. good but not that good really.
The only one I have negative feelings about is Grandia. Sure, it had an interesting battle system… but the plot was horribly cliched and the (PSX, at least) voice acting is the worst I’ve ever seen. Lunar (2 would be my preference) was a much better game with a lot of the same ideas. Plus it has great difficulty; you’re challenged at just about every point of the game. I can’t think of any other game that does it as well. Meanwhile in Grandia I managed to kill the boss before he got off his second attack…
I would argue he doesn’t miss a lot by not having DoaE on the list. Sure, it’s a great game – and amazingly accessible for an NES game – but every other game on the list has characterization, atmosphere, etc. which DoaE really doesn’t have any of. Near as I can tell those are really the focus of the list… Chrono Cross for example has a great atmosphere and plot, but a poor battle system. I found it simultaneously a chore and a beauty to play, but I am glad to have played it.
Chieftain: I’ve never tried the Shadow Hearts games. Are they worth playing? I’ve also missed out on Panzer Dragoon Saga and BoF 5. I heard BoF is a dungeon-crawler, so it’s hit-or-miss (which many accuse P3 of being)…
I still need to play DQ5 and Phantasy Star 4, too… but I’ve heard enough positive about PS4 that I’ll play it once it comes out on VC. I’ll consider DQ5…
Yea Grandia I is a questionable one too, I’d put II on there. More of a mainstream RPG than 1 anyway.
As for DoaE, I just think a lot of people overlook the fact that this was one of the first well done turn based RPG’s and miles ahead of the FF’s during it’s time

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingI mised toe BOF 5 thing, that game fucking sucked, don’t even bother in fact I will give u money to take off my game shelf, it’s pretty bad. Shadow hearts is worth playing, it just isn’t top 20 material, top fifty maybe, but it would be like 49th, panzer dragoon was cool, I liked it alot also, if u can find it its worth picking up. Gandia 1 was OK, not as good as 2 but I can see how it made the list cause it kinda set the tone for part 2.
I also am kinda bummed the neither of the lunar made the cut, 1 and 2 were a couple of the best games I ever played, kinda linear but that was the idea. Lufia also missed out not surre whats up with that.
