ParticipantI bought Kessen I, played it for about an hour, and never played it again. I found it just too slow.
Kessen 2 rewrites ROTK to be a love story between Liu Bei and Diao Chan (randomly), with Cao Cao abducting DC and keeping her in the capital. Most characters are fairly true to their novel depictions in general, except some Wei generals who were made female (Xun Yu being one example IIRC).
I got a good ways into the game and Wu is only in one battle. Though most generals make an appearance in name if nothing else (I personally was disappointed as Cheng Pu didn’t). There is no Wu campaign, nor is there a Wei campaign. You play as Liu Bei and the plot is linear.
That said, I really, really enjoyed the gameplay. It’s slow at times, but it’s essentially like an improved Dragon Force most of the time. DF is just about the only game I can compare it to; you can switch between any of your generals in the battle, and each general has abilities they can use that affect an area; you choose where they hit, so you can strategize. It’s action-ish, mixed in with strategy.
I haven’t played Kessen 3, though if I see it for cheap next time I go to a store I might pick it up.

ParticipantHas anybody ever played the Kessen game series? I was playing 3 and it got me out of playing WoW. True Story, that game is so addictive that I can’t stop playing whenever I have the chance. Let’s talk about Kessen.

ParticipantI have only the first Kessen, have beaten both campaigns by winning all battles. I still need to try the alternate paths and play on higher difficulties.
I have heard good things about Kessen 3, I might try it if I get a chance. I read that they portray Nobunaga as much more heroic in K3 than the more Cao Cao-like depiction he tends to get; would you say that’s a good thing or a bad thing?
Does Kessen 2 have a Wu campaign? And didn’t they essentially rewrite the ROTK era history for that game? I might condier renting it if the gameplay is good.

ParticipantActually, after you beat Kessen II once with Liu Bei, you’ll replay the game all over again, except that you play as Cao Cao.
I finally beated Kessen III 2 months ago. It was hard work, but it was worth it. And yes, Nobunaga was depicted as a more heroic warlord and he did truly loved his wife all the way. So sad that the real Nobunaga wasn’t anywhere near Kessen III’s Nobunaga.
K3, by far, is one of the best I’ve ever played and I highly recommend play the game in the original Jap voiceovers. K3 is the best RTS to ever come out, has been rated 37/40 by Famitsu, Famitsu Weekly’s Platinum Award, and was Japan #1 Video Game Authority.
Too bad that the Americans don’t really have time to play real good RTS games like Kessen III.

ModeratorDoes K3 have the Japanese voiceovers as an option? My roommate has an unreliable swapdisc, so I’m reluctant to try anything from Japan. If K3 has the original voices as an option, though, that’d only speed up my plans to get it :)

ParticipantYea, they do. I got the game and played it entirely on Jap voiceovers.
Ryotaro Okiayu and Hikari Midorikawa make great rivals out of Nobunaga and Mitsuhide respectively, except that this time, Nobunaga’s the good guy and Mitsuhide’s the bad guy.
