KeymasterIt's okay. Took a few hours to get to where I'm actually battling with a sword. Had to do a somewhat annoying escape with Zelda where you have to direct her around. Fighting with Link using the stylus is good enough for now, but again I've only done one small dungeon. Looking forward to playing some more tonight.

KeymasterAt the Forest Sanctuary, getting ready for the Forest Temple (first real dungeon).
However, though I have the copy, I'm playing on the computer so I can take pictures. And I just realized I have a problem, this game requires you to 'blow' into the DS to use the Spirit Flute. Uh…yea. I'm going to have to google this to figure out a way, at first glance it seems like I can save a white noise file and maybe use that as a hotkey? Maybe I could get a mic to work too, I think my new laptop has one…

ParticipantI'm still trying to download this from the Internet for my hopefully legally bought TTDS (is it legal? Someone bought it for me.). For some reason, I can't find a free download link yet…

KeymasterUnfortunately I have to say this is the worst Zelda I have played yet. I feared that would be the case because I think highly of past Zelda games, and since I haven't played Wind Waker or Phantom Hourglass which I'm sure would have been my least liked before this one…
The game's new function is train-travel, and it is bad on so many levels. First of all, this means no world-map exploration, which is by far one of the absolute essential ingredients in a Zelda. Now, you just pick a destination on the train track and the towns / dungeons open up one-by-one, so it's completely linear. Even worse, there is just not much to do while doing the train. It is slow. Enemies are simply scared off from blowing your horn. There are also enemy trains that can be impossible to avoid (you're basically guessing from one track to the other and you're bound to run into them and get screwed). So it can be pretty mundane and the action that does happen is frustrating / not fun gameplay.
The story is actually interesting enough despite playing with baby link and baby zelda. Zelda is prominent in the gameplay even as she can possess enemies and you can control her with the stylus, though the control is poor (poor control for Link too as even basic sword attacks can be hard to pull off at times, along with random rolling which can roll you right off a cliff and / or force you to backtrack).
Dungeons are the best part. Lots of previous Zelda enemies as you would imagine, and this is where some of the more difficult stuff is. But even still, it's few and far between and just not as satisfying as the epic dungeons in past Zelda's (granted I'm not too far yet, and Spirit Tracks has some of the best games ever to live up to in it's series (Zelda I, Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past, etc)).
Pan Flute is the thing you blow into, but you also need to blow into the DS for some special attacks like a Wind attack.
I hope all this doesn't dissuade anyone from playing :) huohu Just being honest though, that's the way I am, I'm not going to bullshit people. huohu
Whether I complete this game and guide is up in the air, I may look into getting FFVIII on here. FF7 was immensely popular on this site when it was released on PSN, and I could see the same happening if I got FFVIII on here, since that was just released. We'll see.

ParticipantYou have to play Wind Waker one day. It is awesome. I'd say a match of the SNES Zelda, although nothing can beat OoT. Phantom Hourglass was a dissappointment for me, with the touch fighting and the "small world after all" that fits into a DS screen. The graphics and storyline weren't content for me, either, although I won't spoil anymore. I guess Nintendo didn't change much in Spirit Tracks after that.
In my opinion, and I won't state any reasoning, since most of you would realize why, the DS is the worst Nintendo system ever. It messes up all the games.

ModeratorIt's not the DS that messes them up, but Nintendo's "Hey, let's use gimmicks like the stylus!" that messes them up.
That, and they used the Link everyone hates.

KeymasterI agree that Wind Waker is probably a decent game. I've heard that from others too. Phantom Hourglass sounds a lot like Spirit Tracks except without the broken train mechanic.
Like DragonAtma says, a lot of it is the Nintendo's obsession with using the touch pad and stylus. Some of the best DS games I've played haven't used the touch pad at all (or made it optional). They didn't realize they have a perfect formula with Zelda; Zelda fans don't want any of that, just give me new dungeons and make them hard, that's all I care…

ParticipantI bet the original is better!
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby

This game was terrible…

ParticipantI think they were right on the ball with the second Zelda. Especially the Jap version that didn't have Mencia-inspired American design altering, like making enemies that are exclusively damaged by fire.

KeymasterOh wow, didn't know that. So those spiders that jump around later on can be killed by the sword? Good to know. Maybe I should play through the Jap version some time since you clearly don't need to know the language to play that game.

ParticipantIt's been awhile, I think a one or two music tracks are altered and you have to stab key items(like that one woman's child) in order to get them. That second to last castle boss, the dragon in the lava, also looks a bit cheaper in the Jap version than the American one.
