ModeratorAs we have learned how to replace tactics… Which tactics are of the least value and are targets to be replaced with cooler tactics? Pick all that you feel are replacable.
Wuo Jian / Douse
Shui Jian / Levee
Cheng Nei / Castle / Barrier
Qi Shou / Haste (this is actually more powerful with agility based multi-attacks)
Fu Bing / Ambush
Tui Lu / Escape
Gui Huan / Return

ModeratorOne idea that I think would probably be easy to do is to swtich Cheng Nei / Castle / Barrier to "Protect" or something which acts like "Guard" but cuts attacks by 25% instead of 50%. I think if we did this it could make Wuo Jian/Shui Jian obsolete and open up 2 new tactic slots as "Protect" might be just as effective as Wuo Jian/Shui Jian (not sure, would have to test). What do you think of that?

Off the top of my head, it might also be neat (space is obviously a bit of an issue) is to combine Wuo Jian and Shui Jian into one tactic.
When all else fails... manipulate the source code.

EDIT: OK I think I found the answer:
Wuo Jian 4 3 All Reduces effects of enemy's fire tactics by half.
Shui Jian 3 9 All Reduces effects of enemy's water tactics by half.
http://mikesrpgcenter.com/destiny/tactics.html
So "Protect" wouldn't be as effective.

If you adjusted the fire and water damage tactics so your level influenced them (just as your stats influenced magic in most FFs), I'm sure you could cut them down to 4 or even 3 of each type.

We could cut down the number of fire, water, and maybe heal tactics if we factored in party level and perhaps INT into a formula for damage/healing. I guess for enemies we would have to use their "highest tactic learned" value to say what level they were for calculating damage.
I'm also thinking about a way to consolidate Cheng Nei, Wuo Jian, and Shui Jian into one tactic perhaps called "Protect".
Currently:
Cheng Nei 5 6 All Reduces the defense level of a castle.
Wuo Jian 4 3 All Reduces effects of enemy's fire tactics by half.
Shui Jian 3 9 All Reduces effects of enemy's water tactics by half.
What if "Protect" dropped physical damage by 25% and tactic damage by say 35%. This would be an early game version of "Guard" which drops all damage by 50%.

KeymasterCheng Nei is pretty bad. Does it really reduce your defense? I haven't really seen any evidence of this from playing but maybe I'm not paying close enough attention to the damage differentials.
Thing about Cheng Nei, Wuo Jian and Shui Jian is that the AI stupidly uses them over and over. Too bad there isn't a way to have the AI be smart enough to know if the tactic has been used yet, and then not use it (though I guess Jie Ce could reverse this and complicate matters). That said I think they're fair game to be replaced, definitely Cheng Nei (that's the only one I'm voting for – Wuo Jian and Shui Jian still have their place, though maybe if I hear / think of more interesting tactic ideas that opinion would change).

I'm sure it could be done… Just takes time and brain power. I already know where the code is where the A.I. chooses tactics. All you'd need to do is add a check to say "if this tactic is already being used (like Ji Mian, Wuo Jian, etc…) then pick a different tactic.

ModeratorWhile we're discussing tactics…
Did we ever find a way to make water tactics usable anywhere? After all, it's not not like fire tactics can only be used in forests!
*near-silent muttering about all fire tactics in Jin Xuan mod being single-hit and all water tactics being weaker but multi-hit*

Keymasterhuohu You're funny DA. I think the 2-spaces-from-water thing is a classic DoaE mechanic.
I suppose though that for boss battles, you can't use a water tactic until Yang Zhou. This is why I can barely remember ever using Shui Tu except grinding in Yellow Scarves land. By the time you get to Yang Zhou you likely have Shui Xing (or at least Ye Huo so you would have no reason to use Shui Tu over that).

Just seems it would be a good way to make the AI act more sensibly. Wuo Jian and Shui Jian definitely seem to be the worst, Jia Xu usually makes stupid choices with his tactics which is why I gave him Yan Re in the YS mod so he's more potent when he chooses to use one of his powerful tactics.

ModeratorI should note that after seeing the code, Tui Lu / Escape is the cheapest, lazy developer tactic out there. All it does is go through the tactic success/fail code then call the retreat code. It does almost nothing for us besides change the probability of retreat slightly.

Moderator2-spaces-from-water may be a classic DoaE thing, but so is playing as Liu Bei.
And in most of the mods, you do NOT play as Liu Bei.

I always wondered why it basically just acted as retreat.
Quote:2-spaces-from-water may be a classic DoaE thing, but so is playing as Liu Bei.You're comparing a game mechanic to a character in the game. Anyway, I just like the water deal because it makes where you battle on the map matter, making it feel more 'alive' huohu. It's like when you play the original DoaE and talk to the LingLing guy that prompts Pang Tong to go out, I always used to be paranoid and never walked by the water so I wouldn't get Hong Shui-ed by Pang Tong.

ModeratorYou don't have to set water tactics to only be near water if you don't want to. I, however, would rather have them available at all times in the Jin Xuan mod so the player can choose between a stronger hits-one and a weaker hits-all.
And no, you don't have to worry about a Pang Tong Hong Shui ambush in it.

Participanti say remove an-sha i hate instant death moves, and well you could add this damage formula of mine for tactics
(((tactic power + int + 5%troop count) X lvl)/number of targets)- (target int X target lvl)
you could also adjust the troop count bonus to serve your challenge needs
and for healing
((tactic power + int + 5%troop count) X lvl)/number of targets
