I don’t think I’ve recommended this here yet.
Mount&Blade is a PC Action/RPG/Strategy. It’s sort of like a more realistic Dynasty Warriors with more strategy and (a bit) less choppy-stabby. You recruit mercenaries, sack towns, raid caravans, join wars, et cetera.
There is no way I can fully describe the experience in words. It plays every bit as smoothly as an FPS, but you’re only one member of your party in what is often an all-out melee.
The latest version (.950) is available here. You can play freely up until level 6 (at least a couple hours, usually). This version is a huge polish upgrade; your hero companions finally have backgrounds and personalities, for example.
I can do nothing but recommend the game very highly. I have played no PC game more since Counter-Strike back in highschool.
There’s even a Three Kingdoms mod in development, although there is little hope of an update anytime soon.
